Strange SSIDs popping up- AE

Have Airport Extreme environment - home
MacBook (OS X 10.4.11) has changing SSIDs pop up in list periodically - wood, WEST 6018, . . .)
sometimes my main AE net drops and has difficulty reconnecting.
the nets change sometimes
I have cleaned the preferred networks down to my main AE but I still see the other nets.
Doubt my neighbor is spohisticated to run multiple and episodic nets - he has a linksys that pops up once in a while.
Is there software I can clean up here? some HARD refresh on my airport card in the MacBook?
BTW - Note - none of this happens on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.3.
Thanks
Benn

Well apparently your MacBook has better sensitivity than your MacBook Pro. The AirPort menu shows all detected networks. There isn't any way to filter or limit the list.

  • Automount of SD card & USB external HDD with strange KDE pop up msg

Today I reviewed lots of threads posted over the last year and some bug reports too about this issue, but it's happening for me too. Both SD card and USB external HDD have autodetectable filesystems on them because I can mount them by hand with "mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt" and "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt". But it would be nice if I didn't have to do that.
Although I didn't notice which explicit install that I did pulled them in as dependencies, I do have udisk2 and polkit installed. Also installed udiskie as a wrapper. I've been mounting these volumes by hand before now because I feel like I'm still learning the ropes of The Arch Way and guessed (apparently incorrectly) that mounting volumes by hand was just part of "The Arch Way". But based on some threads here and some bug reports, I guess this used to work in Arch but has been causing some problems for some people lately when they upgrade. I just installed Arch for the first time (using the 2015.02.01 iso image), so I don't have any background to go on.
So what is The Arch Way for automounting external drives? I've skimmed the wiki article for this and because "Development of udisks has ceased in favor of udisks2." it seems that udisks2 is preferred. But it got installed and the daemon is running for me. The user is in the wheel group. dbus is running (though like one person who filed a bug, I too have several instances of dbus in my ps -aux output and I'm not sure if that is as it should be or not). I've done no special configuration ("not wittingly" anyway; I promise, my name is not James Clapper) that I think would have affected this.
So for a newb with no special preference, how should automounting be configured in a new Arch system? In other words, what should be my first steps in trying to solve this problem for myself? I know there are lots of different ways to skin this cat, but I'd prefer the simplest and most elegant solution that does not depend on KDE or GNOME or other unnecessary tools. I've just (with this Arch system I just installed) begun using i3wm and I think I'll be sticking with it. That said, however, it's clear that I inadvertently/unwittingly managed to get some elements of KDE into memory as the following http://gamonics.org/img/2015-02-26-1731 … _scrot.png shows. This popped up both times, when I plugged in my SD card and when I plugged in my USB drive. Any thoughts on what's going on here? I did install okular explicitly because I think it's one of the best PDF viewers, but I don't understand why KDE is reporting anything to me when I'm running i3 and insert an SD card or a USB disk.
And in the terminal, I get this output (apparently from udiskie):
[root@archippocrates archie]# Failed to show notification: The connection is closed
    not adding /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/mmcblk0: unhandled device
    mounted /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/mmcblk0p1 on /media/3532-3338
Failed to show notification: The connection is closed
Although the volume does get mounted automatically.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I personally can't answer the question of "simplest and most elegant" way of mounting devices. It all depends on what you want. If you expect more exotic functionality, say correct unmounting of devices if they were disconnected during a sleep cycle, there's probably no way around udisks2. For that you get a complex piece of software prone to... unexpected behaviour. Mind you some of it is related to front-ends like GVFS.
As to your KDE issues, last I checked mount handling was disabled by default there, but you can control it manually (see man kcmshell4). Though I haven't followed up on KDE 5 developments. If going with udisks2, I'd recommend using devmon from the udevil package as a front-end (more details on the wiki udisks page).
PS: multiple dbus instances are expected, check the user names and specified arguments in the ps output.

  • Strange extension pop-up window

I have the extension Safari Restore installed.
While surfing the web, a Safari pop up window came up which read:
"Allow this website to use space on your disk?
The website "safari-extension://com.sweetproductions.safarirestore-3cn4ukerbr" is requesting 100MB of disk space to store "SRDB" as a database on your disk. Don't Allow   Allow"
I didn't allow it, but what could this be? It doesn't seem good!
You can see an image of it here:

The extension wants to store data. Only its developer could tell you why.

  • Strange keychain pop up nonsense

What is keychain, and why do I need it? I never activated keychain (why should I) and yet I get continual pop ups requiring a password that I certainly don't have.  This is actually VERY annoying.  What to do?
    OS X v10.9.1
    Model identifier iMac 12,1

Were you able to find anything in the related google search result, linked above, that did anything to change the pattern of circular non-logic whereby you get nowhere outside the same path?
A few did appear promising, but then I don't use Mavericks & my antiques look curiously if I bring up the subject of a 'new OS X' since most are at their great last stand. And I can avoid keychain in mine.
Some users did not upgrade to Mavericks, especially if their software in use from other makers did not necessarily find support in the latest OS X version, or there was no clear advantage; and could revert to a clone or bootable copy of their older system, with that version upgrades intact, from a second hard disk drive location. One that would not automatically be seen by the Mavericks installer and also get an upgrade, too.
If you disable iCloud keychain, does that help make the shared access issue go away, or only compound the effect by getting more singular keychain messages as other devices aren't sharing information, then?
I notice some other topic related articles when I search Support (search box) using 'Mavericks keychain issues' for results. Anything new there?
Oh, on a separate note there is this page 'iCloud keychain availability by country' where SMS may not be available there, so it is possible to change or set up the iCloud keychain in the computer and not online (or so I think it says) + It may not help. see article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6020
Hopefully some wizard from cupertino will reply with the insider information, short of revisiting Mt Lion or another earlier city of OS X.
Sorry to not be of much help...
    Good luck & happy computing!

"ONE OF THE USB DEVICES ATTACHED TO THIS COMPUTER HA MALFUNCTIONED AND WINDOWS DOES NOT RECOGNIZE IT"  in the device manager there is one Generic US Hub indicates "UNKNOWN DEVICE" also in properties it is showing " Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"  as I wrote there is no USB device connected.  Please advise what's going on....!?!
    Solved!

I think that's the reason. USB port is sensitive to water, in a 100% humidity environment there could be water form inside your laptop.
I think in manual it is clearly stated that do not use your ThinkPad in environment with humidity higher than 95% (which I think apply to any kind of electronic device without special protection)

  • Strange blank disk mounting pop-ups on Finder

    Hi,
Lately, i've been getting strange blank pop-ups in Finder with just title of the windows being Google Chrome or Adobe Flash Player (after i uninstalled Google Chrome and started using Safari).
When i check Disk Utility, i can see that a Google Chrome disk image is mounted or Adobe Flash Player disk image mounted (as the case may be).  I've also been having problems with installing Adobe Flash Player 11.  It gives me a no mountable disk system error even though i've tried downloading the file many times and am quite sure its not a problem with the .dmg
I have a late 2012 Mac Mini running 10.8.2 OSX on a Fusion Drive that i created on my own with the stock Apple 1TB HDD and a 256GB Samsung Pro 840 SSD.  I've migrated my apps and data from a 2007 Macbook running Snow Leopard.
Anyone has any ideas on what could have gone wrong?
    Thanks!

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Iphone4 strange message details pop up

I got a strange message pop up on my phone today.  The window was the standard blue color.

    download: complete
There was no option to cancel.  Only the OK tab at the bottom of the window.
Does anyone know what this is? I've searched online and have turned up empty.

Not exactly.  I did have the question posted elsewhere and received the following responses:
    *   It looks like you were in an app that had some debugging left-overs in it.
    *  Sounds like a developer forgot to comment out some code for production.
And i dont know if this is related or not, but not too long after my phone locked me out. I have always used the same password and from literally one moment to the next the phone would not accept it. I had JUST accessed my phone as normal and less than 10 minutes later I was denied. In the end I had to restore the phone to factory settings and lost everything on there. My fault for not backing this up on the computer though.
Ever since the restore, everything has been working fine.
I would say if you can, for peace of mind, restore your phone.
    Good Luck!

  • HT201418 After restoring from iCloud to new device - strange Apple ID popup on the phone

I have change my iPhone 6 to 6+. I have done backup of the old iPhone to iCloud. When I started restore process - iOS system gave you a question with Apple ID (is this your Apple ID?) as always with strange one. I guess system is always giving suggestion to the Apple ID account latest backup was done to the nearest server of iCLOUD. Of course I have deleted this stranger Apple ID suggestion for restore and I have applied my own APPLE ID.
Restore took some time and was successful.
ISSUE - many times iOS want to connect to iTunes - pop up window is appearing having again suggestion of the same STRANGE Apple ID. It;s annoying and I do not know how to get rid out from my iOS.
I put my normal Apple ID with credentials into iCloud and iTunes setting on iPhone but still strange one pops-up

You probably needed to update the iOS on the new phone.  When it's done, set it up as a new iPhone, then disconnect it from your computer.  Then go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings (provide the password if prompted), go through the setup screens on the phone and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and follow the prompts.  Be sure your phone is connected to wifi and your charger while it is restoring the backup.

  • JFileChooser strange registry error

I am testing a java application on windows 7 and just saw a very strange error pop up after trying to use a JFileChooser:
An error was detected in the windows registry.
    Required windows folders were missing.
Googling this did not turn up anything obvious.
    Clicking OK then showed:
    Some local folders are missing.
    Missing: C:\programdata\OEM Links
    Full folder List:
    C:\Users\Public\Desktop
    ... (other folders)
Anyone ever seen anything like this before?
Or anyone have an idea what might be going on?
This is a fresh win7 install on a test box (ghosted for re-imaging)
why does JFileChooser care about the registry?

    Hello,
I'm sorry you haven't got a reply so far. Here are some considerations, that you can now wish to consider:
I am testing a java application on windows 7 and just saw a very strange error pop up after trying to use a JFileChooser:Can you test it on another version of Windows? What is the result?
If you don't have any other Windows version available, can you post an SSCCE (a 10-line program that tries to open a JFileChooser, and reproduces the problem), so that you, me, and other people, have a chance to run the exact same test on various OS?
In all cases, you always have more chance to receive an answer when you post an SSCCE that demonstrates the problem with convenience for other forum users: http://sscce.org
An error was detected in the windows registry.
    Required windows folders were missing.
Googling this did not turn up anything obvious.Googling "JFIleChooser registry" did turn up a few interesting links, see below.
    Some local folders are missing.
    Missing:  C:\programdata\OEM Links
    Full folder List:
    C:\Users\Public\Desktop
...   (other folders)Anyone ever seen anything like this before?
Or anyone have an idea what might be going on?From the looks of it, it seems the JRE is using the registry to have some info about the files system. I don't know for sure which info and why, but I don't find that so surprising (admittedly, the error message itself is rather unclear).
why does JFileChooser care about the registry? Not the registry itself, but merely the info it contains about the filesystem's structure. I imagine drive names and mapping of network drives can be found there, for example.
As claimed above, Googling led me to the following bug entries:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4879395
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4712307
Don't necessarily traverse the whole contents of the bug entries themselves: the point is that they prove that the JRE is indeed leveraging filesystem info from the registry (the reason was, if I understand correctly, to improve performance in the case of network drives, and in the case of very numerous files).
The other point is that both bug entries describe the same command-line flag to disable at least one mechanism that leverages the registry:
java -Dswing.disableFileChooserSpeedFix ...Hopefully, that may, with no guarantee, fix your specific issue. Try it and let us know.
    Best regards,
    J.

  • Broadcast and non-broadcast SSID issues with iPhones and iPads

We have a CIsco wireless infrastructure configured with a public broadcasted ssid and a private non-broadcast ssid that we are experiencing issues with the iPads and iPhones.  The iPad or iPhone will switch between both ssids if defined but keep the original IP address when it switches to the non-broadcast ssid making it unusable.  It shouldn't be switching at all technically.  If the non-broadcast ssid is defined only on the iPhone or iPad, the broadcast ssid pops up and starts asking for authentication information.  I have Cisco looking into this but I'm quite sure this is an Apple bug. Any other device works fine.  We are currently using version 4.3.5(8L2) on the iPads and iPhones.  I do know that if we broadcast both SSIDS, the issue goes away, but I don't want to do that.  Although it doesn't really add any more security, it just isn't advertised, so most people won't see it and avoids a lot of questions. Hopefully there's a simple solution.
    Any ideas apple guys?
Also how does one open an actual trouble ticket with apple?

  • Been given the wrong SSID/wireless key information...

    Hi there.
On Wednesday I had BT infinity installed and everything started working straight away, all blue lights etc. however the network SSID that I had been given didn't match any on the wifi networks on my laptop/iPad etc. I've set up a wired connection and that's working fantastically, but no wifi. Been on the phone numerous times and BT have said, firstly that the order had not been processed, then earlier today that they didn't know what the issue was so they would send me a new hub.
During the call today I asked whether it would be a possibility that maybe I had been given the wrong information, as I thought I'd noticed a new BT SSID pop up (I live in flats so there are numerous connections), but it didn't match mine. I was told that this wouldn't be the case.
Half an hour ago I decided to switch off the hub and see if that new SSID would disappear. It disappeared. Switched the hub back on, and yup, it appeared. So this new SSID is obviously mine.
Phoned but BT and tried to change my password via the BT Home Hun Manager but the admin password that I have been given is of course incorrect so I can't do that. They've said all that they can do is send out a new hub.
Surely there's a way of retrieving the wireless key without waiting for a new hub?! It's ridiculous to think they don't have that information stored or there's another way of finding it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My hub is due to be delivered and Sod's law is the day I have to do training rather than work my usual night shift so it means it could be weeks before I get my new hub.

    Now that aint right!
Sounds like the labels have been stuck on to the wrong hub.
And there's at least 1 other hub out there in BT land that's wrong too, or more.....
I've not found or read a way to crack the admin password, so you're stuck till it can be replaced
(And I was just checking, others have got it wrong in the past!)

  • Can't copy files to desktop after mounting CD

I'm having a weird problem - when i insert a cd, i can't copy any files to my desktop. my internal hd is partitioned into 2 drives - 1 containing the system & 1 that only contains media. once i insert the disc, i cant copy any files to the system disk - not from the cd to the desktop or from the "media" partition to the desktop.
basically, everything is fine until i insert the cd - then i'm not able to copy anything to my desktop. the issue remains after i eject the disc - i'm forced to logout & bak in to resolve it. the cd is a disc I burned not very long ago - i need to get the files off of the disc, so i'm in a major bind.
please let me know if you know why this would be happening or how to resolve it. i tried repairing permissions & running disc utility.
    thanks!

I just had a client with the same trouble - she has a lot of files on DVD-R, burned in a mix of UDF and HFS+. Today she called me up saying that she couldn't copy the files from the disc. I took control of her machine with ARD and found that dragging the files from the disk to any other place, be it Desktop, Home or even another volume, the cursor changed into a white circle with a slash through it. I was able to open each document and save as a new document elsewhere - so I know the files are good. The strange thing is that the same thing is appearing on her old machine (a dual G4 running 10.4.9) as her new machine (MacPro quad with 10.4.10). I had her download and re-apply the 10.4.10 combo update and some of the problems were fixed. Some. Then 10 minutes later the problem reasserted itself. Strange errors popped up in the Console to do with disk arbitration and the following "KernelEventAgent[29]: tid 00000000 received unknown event (12)". What the **** is going on here?
