Strange storage problem...  hidden files?

Hi all...
I am using a new G4 PB 1.67GHz, 1Gb RAM, 75Gb HD. Connected to the firewire port is a Rocstor 300Gb drive. Conected to the 2nd firewire port on the external drive (the computer only has 1 FW port) is my Canon Optura 60. I have been importing to the external drive 3 versions of a show to be edited and it looks great. Then I noticed that my PB HD is being filled just as fast as the Rocstor! I have all the project folders and clips on the Rocstor, but cannot find any on the PB HD. Rebooting and Disk Utility didn't help. It's as though another set of hidden copies of these imported films has filled my hard disk completely and I can't find them to get rid of them!! The console.log files are also recieving large amounts of spew from Core Graphics. Help!!
Andy

Hi Andrew
Don't know what's happening but I know that I don't do it Your way. I usually
got problem that way.
- I do not Daisy-chain Mac-ext.HD-Camera
I do: Load down material from my int. HD to my external so that I free up space.
Disconnect the ext. HD and connect my Camera and import my material
to a project folder/icon on the desktop.
If I have to then move the project to my external HD. This require that the
ext. HD is formatted as Mac OS Extended journaled. (PC or UNIX or older Mac
WILL NOT WORK)

  • I just upgraded to OSX LION and have a problem with "hidden" files

Okay first please take it easy with me, This is my first iMac and I've had it only 3 days, Everything was working fine until i upgraded to OSX LION, Now I have a problem "Hidden" files on an external hard drive which were visible before the upgrade seem to have vanished.
Does anyone know what's happened - Did the upgrade delete them somehow (The drive was not connected during the process) or does LION simply hide "Hidden" files, I certainly hope that's the case because there were quite a few files annd I would hate to have lost them permanently.
Obviously if they are just hidden i would appreciate anyone telling me if\how I can see them again.
THANK YOU in advance for your help.

First WOW what a quick response, are Mac users always this quick to help each other out - Never got such a rapid response in all my PC using years.
Second it is an NTFS drive, Other non-hidden files are still there and still accessible it's just the "hidden" ones that have vanished. As I said this is my first ever Mac so I can't figure out how to unhide them if that is at all possible and if that is in fact what has happened here.

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Storage Problem with Zen vP

Hi folks,?I recently got?a Zen vPlus for Christmas, and with only 82 songs, 7 pictures, and [short] video, it appears that all of my 2 GBs are already used up. When I go into 'extras' and 'removable disc', it seems that GB is dedicated just to that, which seems strange because when connecting it to the computer, the 'removable disk U: dri've' appears to have no files on it. Has anybody had similar issues? More importantly, does anyone know what the problem may be with my storage? Surely the 2GBs have not been used up with so few files? After all, it is advertised as being able 000 songs... Many thanks for your help,?- CD

It's not a storage problem, but your Zen has been configured to use gb of its space as removable storage. You can get it all back by going to Extras ---> Removable Disk --> Hold Back Button --> Selecting Disable. You can also switch the capacity, if you want a small portion of your space to be used for non-media files.

  • Showing hidden files white screen upon restart

I put in the command to show hidden files and restarted my iMac. It only shows a white screen. Completely blank. How do I fix it? It runs on Lion and has a Time Machine backup.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
This step applies only to a pre-2013 Mac Pro tower, not to any other model. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Hidden Files Appearing

For some strange reason, etc, tmp, var, and Bootx.bootinfo have appeared in my root directory and I can't use SetFile -aV to hide them (I get an error). Since tiger doesn't use the .hidden file anymore (but respects it) does anyone have a solution for how to hide these files again? It's more cosmetic than anything but I don't want to accidentally trash them.
    iBook G4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Mid-2005 Model

" The symlinks for etc tmp and var are not responding to SetFile even though it's not returning an error."
Depending on what is meant by "are not responding", that might just be the stupid "Finder" - I should have mentioned that the "Finder" will probably have to be restarted before it recognizes the change, but on the other hand, the fact that it worked on "BootX.bootinfo" may mean the problem is something else. The result of 'GetFileInfo' should at least indicate whether or not the attribute is being set.
Regarding the error, I only get see the "-5000" error while attempting to use 'SetFile' on a link that is not owned by the user executing the command, unless the user is "root". It is unexpected that it should appear while executing the command with 'sudo'. Also, note that it is not necessary for "root" to be enabled to use 'sudo', but as along as it is, you could try AppleScript instead.
Also, when posting about commands not working, it is often helpful if the exact command that was used is included in the post. Something that I am told OS X does differently from other unix based systems is its handling of symbolic links and autocompletion. OS X adds a trailing slash when autocompleting the name of a symbolic link to a directory. It seems that with 'SetFile', if the argument is a symbolic link to a directory and is entered with the trailing slash, it will act on the link's target even in the presence of the '-P' flag so this might be another reason why the command may appear to fail. Of course, it should be possible to use 'GetFileInfo' to check the status of both link and target after executing the command...

  • Hidden file

    Hi,
I have a network HD and when I copy files on this drive I can't see from finder.
If I go with terminal the files exist.
After a few try I discover that the problem is the permission.
After copy the permission on other user is with execution, if i remove this permission i can see in finder.
    Ex.:
    I can't see in finder:
    -rwxrwxr-x   1 user  staff     3467  1 Nov  2003 eclipse.png
    I can see in finder:
    -rwxrwxr--   1 user  staff     3467  1 Nov  2003 eclipse.png
Now I want to know why?
More important if I see the file in my computer and when i copy on this drive the file disappear is wrong something?
I copy what is see with mount:
/user@n5200/User on /Volumes/User (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by user)
    Someone can help me?

  • Hidden fIles display?

I just go an iMac and connected a Maxtor external HD to it and a MuVo MP3 player. Everything is OK but when I open these devices the file structure shows me what seem to be Hidden Files....Resource Fork, etc.
I don't want to see that when I click on the HD. I just want to see the normal files without the excess pollution of visual space.
So far I have not been able to locate any preference which would allow me to hide these files from view...like Don't show Hidden Files.
    Can someone help?

    Neil,
This is why I like these discussion pages. If you take the time to look around and be patient you will generally find the answer to the problem.
In my case my Macbook Pro crashed unexpectedly and on getting it going again for some really strange reason there were hidden files from all corners of its Universe on display including all of the root files and even hidden files on the desktop. Really strange and I was in a state of panic having had to do a rebuild about 2 weeks ago and thinking "oh dear, here we go again". To make matters worse the program icons and/or shortcuts everywhere were kind of light coloured.
I followed a process described in the help files which involved using the "Mac OS X Install Disk" and navigating to to some deep dark place on the install DVD and finally running a "sudo" command. It didn't fix the problem.
Your script worked perfectly (once I had fixed the typos) and for that I am eternally grateful. I have saved a copy, just in case.
I still don't understand what happened to make all the hidden files unexpectedly visible but no doubt someone such as yourself would be able to offer a technical explanation.
Man, if I could award you a star I would.
    Thanks heaps.
    Chris

  • How do I stop Mac creating files on Windows server creating hidden files?

I have my macbook connecting to a windows 2003 server share. Whenever I write a file, either by creating or editing and saving, it creates a hidden file too. I edit filename.doc then I'll also have ._filename.doc in that directory. It's distracting the windows users and causing me to become a little unpopular. How can I prevent those hidden files from being created?

This happens in part with some Mac files that contain both a resource and a data fork. Windows doesn't know how to handle these files and breaks them apart. Also, Mac OS creates certain hidden files used by the Finder that also get transferred but are no longer hidden on Windows because Windows does not recognize the "." preceding a filename as the Unix shorthand for "invisible."
There are a number of free utilities you will find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate that can prevent this and the hidden files from appearing on the Windows drive.
Zipping files before transfer will also prevent the problem from occurring.

  • Error While Uploading, hidden file somewhere conflicting?

I was in the process of uploading some files to Acrobat.com, most worked but a couple of them failed. The progress bar in the upper right disappeared, but my files weren't showing. Figured there was just a problem with the file, so I tried to upload again, one at a time. It uploaded and then said a file exists with that name already and do I want to delete new, delete previous or rename the new one. I say to delete the one that was previously uploaded, and my file now appears with a " (1)" added to the file name. When I try to rename it to the correct name the error it gives is: "Could not complete your request (400) - An error occurred while trying to complete your request, and it could not be completed."
Is there a way to see hidden files or files that errored so I can clear them out to start fresh?

I was thinking the same thing, hoping there was some hidden way to get at the files.
I tried going through incognito mode and through a separate browser that had never been to any Adobe site, same error when I tried to rename.
I think I'll try to move the files I know are good to another folder then delete the folder where these annoying files are hidden. I would think that would get rid of them then I can start over. I'll let you know.

  • Flash capacity and hidden files

I am about to order a new Mac Pro and am trying to work out whether to get 512 or 1TB flash storage
I have an 2007 MP, 4 drives in it but looking at the main drive and its content I cannot account for all of the used space.
The main (boot disk) shows 567GB used
Using Cmd + I on all the folders in the 1TB boot disk I get the following:-
So it appears that most of the unaccounted for space (136 GB of 146GB) is sitting in the Users folders.
So my questions is what would the "hidden" files be and would those reside on the flash drive in a new Macpro
Assuming I will put all of the Document files etc onto the Pegasus storage and that I would have the same apps on board,  would it be safe to say to  allow for
    i.e. the 512GB should be sufficient !
    Regards

Thanks form the reply DWB (Yosemete Sam !)
Would I be right in thinking that the User's directory would, in the case of the new Mac Pro, always reside on the flash drive?
So in my case above, providing I moved all User content (i.e. Documents, moves, desktop content,) to the Pegasus storage then I could expect to need 256 GB of storage and a 512GB flash storage should be sufficient to run all my apps etc?
    Regards

  • Hard drive is a hidden file

my hard drive some how has become a hidden file. Its not showing up anywhere except for disc utility, and when I show all files with the terminal it shows up. How can I make it unhidden?

This problem has become so common I wrote an article about it and the easiest solutions:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
The Applescript given works fine and is easy. The Terminal solution works and is easy if you have Developer stuff installed.

  • Problem with file locked by another user

I have a problem with a user on Windows 7 in my network when accessing a single .xlsx file. When Jane Smith opens said file, she gets a message that the file is locked by Jane Smith but she has checked and it was in use by another user, Roger Smith.
This happened over a weeks time and is not a one-off situation. Researching online, I tried one suggestion by going to Roger Smith's computer and into the registry under HKEY CURRENT USER, navigated to "Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\UserInfo",
expecting to see Jane Smiths name and initials. Nope, that wasn't the problem. I went ahead and deleted extra profiles on the computer and ran a repair on Roger Smiths Office 2013.
It was okay for a half a day then towards the end of the day, Jane Smith calls back to say again the same file is locked by Jane Smith yet this time Diana Smith had the file open.
So, the file is locked but why is Excel not reporting the correct user? What can I do to address this?

These all reference Office 2007 and 2010. As far as you know, all of these fixes still apply to Office 2013?
example: they give two updates to download.
    Excel 2007 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598133
    Excel 2010 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598143
    No option for 2013.
but this could be useful no matter the version.
    In the Shared folder or the File Server;
Open the folder where the Document is located.
    Click Tools=>Folder Options
    Click the View tab
Scoll down to Advanced Settings>Hidden files and folders
Select Show hidden files and folders and Unselect Hide protected operating system files
Look for a temp lock file and delete it. It should look something like
~$filename.xlsx  or whatever file extension the it was saved in.
(In my case, this file had become corrupt and was stuck displaying an earlier modify date from a few days ago..)

  • Problem with File Based replication in Weblogic Express 10

    Hi,
We have Web application (exploded war) file deployed on Weblogic Express 10, to a Cluster of three Managed Servers (all three on different physical machines).
We are using File based session persistance in weblogic.xml
We have a shared location for all the three servers where we will be sharing the Session data.
When we start the application, its works fine and is very fast, but after sometime the application slows down.
Troubleshooting the Issue we found that its a problem with file based replication. By using File based replication every user session is stored in form of directory inside shared directory. So after sometime thousands of directories are created inside the shared directory where the session information is stored. So when we access the application, its waiting for lot of time with Message Session Monitor .... (this is because its browsing through the shared session storage directory for lot of time for session information as it has lot of directories) and finally after a long time like 10 mins we get the Application Home Page.
When we clean up all the saved sessions inside shared directory, the application works fine, But we will see the same sometime later may be after 3 or 4 hours when the shared session directory has lot of session information stored in it.
Is there a way to clean up the saved session information on file system as soon as that user session is closed by using file based replication.
We cannot used Inmemory replication as our Appl doesnt support it.
Please advice as it is a major show stopper in our Production Mirror env.
              Weblogic Consultant

It is possible to reduce number of live session by configuring very low timeout-secs weblogic.xml. Default is 60 minutes.
              More details are here..

    Regards,
    Mihir Pandya

Hi, thank you for your replies, I found out few things about my servlet, and its portability
and i have few questions, although i marked this topic as answered i guess its ok to post
I am using javax.servlet.context.tempdir to store my files in that servletcontext temporary directory. But i dont know how to give hyperlink
of the modified files to the user for them to download the modified files.
What i am using to get the tempdir i will paste
    File baseurl = (File)this.getServletContext().getAttribute("javax.servlet.context.tempdir");
    System.out.println(baseurl);
    baseurl = new File(baseurl.getAbsolutePath()+File.separator+"temp"+File.separator+"files");
baseurl.mkdirs();so i am storing my files in that temp/files folder and the servlet processes them and modifies them, then how to present them as
links to the user for download ?
and as the servlet is multithreaded by nature, if my servlet gets 2 different requests with same file names, i guess one of them will be overwritten
And i want to create unique directory for each request made to the servlet , so file names dont clash.
one another thing is that i want my servlet to be executed by my <form action> only, I dont want the user to simply type url and trigger the servlet
    Reply A.S.A.P. please..
    Thanks and regards,
    Mihir Pandya
