Strange thing happend today when turning on my computer

Hello,
This morning when I turned on my computer, instead of the grey screen with the apple appearing, it stayed black, however, the light was on in the right hand corner (and it stayed on) and the fan was running loudly. It looked like it was sleeping except for the fact that the light was not pulsing like it usually does - it was a solid light and the computer itself was still running because I could hear it. I tried to hit a button on the keyboard to see if I could somehow get it to finish starting up - that didn't work - so the only other thing I thought to do was reset it by holding in the start up button - that didn't work. I had to hit the power strip off and then back on (probably not the best thing for the computer). Shutting the power off and then back on allowed me to start up fine and everything has appeared normal throughout the day - I have turned it off and on multiple times (just testing it out - I don't usually do this a lot throughout the day) and the computers sleep functions have been fine.
Has this ever happend to anyone else? Is there something I should look for/watch out for? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,
Thanks for your help. Here's what I did:
I went into Disk Utility and selected the hard drive icon (there were two listed which confussed me - one just said "macintosh HD" and the other one had numbers listed next to it - which one is my "volume"? I wasn't sure so I just selected the "Macintosh HD" one which was the one listed below. I hit "repair permissions" and it took approx 8 minutes - I have NEVER none this in the 2 years that i've had my iMac.
Once you tell me if i've selected the right volume i'll verify my hard drive.
Thanks for your help - I'm nervous doing anything like this due to a REALLY bad PC experience I had a few years back and I lost EVERYTHING! So, I don't go exploring around a lot on the system - although I wish I knew more.

    How do I remove Canon " My Image Garden" from the desktop when turning on my computer ?  I have the icon but the program starts up and I have to delete it manually  from the desktop to clear my screen for other work...

    Are you using a Windows or a Mac? What you're seeing (the backwards L shaped menu) is probably the Canon Quick Menu. If you have a Mac you can go into your applications, select Canon Utilities, then drag Canon Quick menu to the trash and empty trash can. On Windows you'd go to the control panel, select Programs and Features (or Uninstall Program/Add or Remove Program) and uninstall the Canon Quick Menu. Not required for all the normal functions of the printer. You can do the same thing for My Image Garden. Also not required.

  • Strange thing with ExternalInterface when profiling

    Hello.
    I use Scout for analyze application and found out strange thing with ExternalInterface:
    I regularly get some overheads with ExternalInterface._evalJS. But I don't any explicit calls of ExternalInterface.call during this overheads. Does it mean that ExternalInterface make internal interactions during flash player lifecycle, or something else?

    From the screenshot, it looks like you've registered an anonymous function as the callback for a "timer" event (the "MethodInfo-xxx" is an auto-generated name that Flash gives to anonymous functions), and this function is calling into ExternalInterface. It's your code (or possibly that of a framework you're using) - not internal Flash player functionality.

  • USB-6009 activates unwanted 5V digital signal when turning on the computer

    Hello!
    This may be a known issue, but I couldn't seem to find it in the discussion forums.
    As the title describes, upon turning on the computer, the USB-6009 receives power from the USB port and automatically fires 5V from various TTL channels.
    This is problematic, as it persistently activates part of our machinery we have attached.
    This occurs even when plugging in the USB after the computer is powered up.
    The only way to ensure none of the channels are sending 5V outputs is to power up our labview software, and manually send the command to set all TTL channels to 0V.
    Is there a way to default all the outputs to 0 upon receiving power?
    Thanks,
    -Peter

    6008 is a low-cost device, not a high-performance device.
    Build some hardware protection between the DAQ and your equipment to make it fail-safe in the event that the DAQ reinits and pulls all the lines high.  Tristate buffers and inverters help a lot here.
    You can also use the analog output to "turn on" the rest of the circuit - that inits at 1V, set a comparator to trigger above 3V and slam that output to 5 when the rest of your outputs are configured.

  • A strange thing is happening when I try to upgrade to Leopard

    I have OS 10.4.11 and I own Leopard but when I try to install it, the computer does the scan thing and tells me that I need OS 10.4 or higher to install Leopard. But when I click on "About this mac" it tells me that i meet all the requirements and that I have 10.4.11
    So I can't figure it out! Why does my computer not see that I have the right stuff? Or if I don't why does it look like I do?

    Hi again, Snow Leopard/10.6 will not work on any G5, or G4, Leopard/10.5 is the latest you can install/run/use.
    You mentioned contacting Apple to get something that is now past it's era?
    Yes. 10.5 is getting late in it's life, but is the most modern OS you can run.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
    * Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
    * 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
    * DVD drive for installation
    * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it!
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
    * Mac computer with an Intel processor
    * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
    * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    * DVD drive for installation
    * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    To be sure which Mac you have...
    At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto *but not including the Serial#*...

  • When turning on another computer next to my iMac - the mouse gets jumpy. Any one knows if I can do something about it?

    The iMac is brand new and it happens with both the Magic Mouse and another mouse (Logitec) I'm using regulary. This happens when either my desktop pc is turned on (located about 4 feet from the iMac), or my laptop pc when located on the same table as the iMac. Once they are turned off the problem goes away.
    Help would be highley appriciated...
    Thanks.

    Do you have an Install Disc?
    If so...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
    Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.

  • Can i disable the save windows screen when turning off the computer? It is very anoying.

    Please if anyone can help i want to disable the window that wants to save the windows when closing the computer.

    If you do not want windows to open when rebooting and don't like to have to uncheck the option every time, there is a keyboard shortcut:
    Press Command + Option + Control + Eject key. This will cause an immediate shutdown without the window.

  • Help needed to figure out a strange thing

    I am running GJ and Java 1.4 on window 2k and I have been spending hours trying to figure out what's wrong with the following codes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The code is simplified (doesn't use any util class at all), but it still throws runtime exception:
    C:\test>java D
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.AbstractMethodError: E.test()LE;
    at C.test(C.java:1)
    at D.main(D.java:17)
    The strange thing is that, when I change the name of class E to B, it runs fine. It seems that classes B and C have to be ordered. For example, using name C1 and C2 will be fine, but using C2 and C1 throws exception. It's getting late and I am tired.
    public interface A {
    public A test();
    public abstract class E implements A {
    public abstract E test();
    public abstract class C extends E {
    public C() {}
    // the main class
    import java.io.*;
    public class D extends C {
    public D() {
    super();
    public D test() {
    System.out.println("D called");
    return new D();
    public static void main(String[] agrs) {
    A obj = new D();
    obj.test();

    Its a bug. The compiler neglected to generate a required bridge method.
    I have reported 4821489 for this problem.

  • W540 crashes when turning airplane mode on.

    I've already made this post but decided to do it again since more users have the W540 now, as well as to make things clearer.
    When turning airplane mode on (F8 key), the laptop simply turns off - no BSOD.
    Model: W540 20BG
    OS: Windows 8.1 (happened on 8 as well)
    I've tried reinstalling/resetting the OS, as well as reinstalling various drivers. Sometimes the problem will go away temporarily, but always comes back.
    Has anyone had this problem/has a solution?

    No, that's the only way to do it. Seriously, tapping Settings then Airplane mode, which takes about 3 seconds is really too slow? Seriously?

  • Catalyst & HDMI audio: problem when turning TV off

    Hi everyone,
    I've got two PCs with AMD E-350 FPU, one is a laptop running Windows 7 and the other is a nettop running Arch Linux (using Catalyst as a driver for the GPU). On both of them, I'm experiencing a similar problem with sound:
    When turning on the computer and the TV, everything works just fine, including sound. However, if I turn off the TV (without disconnecting the HDMI cable) the following happens:
    Arch: no sound anymore, even if I turn the TV back on. No visible changes in alsamixer.
    Windows: sound through internal speakers. ATI HDMI sound device now shows up as 'Disconnected', even if I turn the TV back on.
    Disconnecting the HDMI cable and then inserting it back (while the TV is on again) fixes the problem on both computer, and so does rebooting the computer.
    However, even though this seems to not be a Linux-related problem (being etiher a problem with TV's firmware or ATI GPU), I wonder if anyone knows of a more elegant (preferably software, of course ) solution than reconnecting the cable each time I want to turn off my TV and then turn it back on?
    Last edited by popoffka (2012-06-01 10:29:36)

    I have the same issue in Windows. If I turn-off the TV and turn it back on, there is no sound. Because I have no other sound devices (disabled the others in BIOS setup), the speaker icon shows a red "x". The playback devices screen says HDMI is "unplugged." I have to restart the system or unplug/reconnect the HDMI cord to get sound to come back.

  • When i open my computer I get the white screen with apple symbol and there are vertical lines all over the screen with green pixels and after a few minutes the screen gets grey and I get message to restart my computer what happens

    3 years ago I bought an IMac Desktop that I am using for a lot of things but the most important for dvd montage in Imovies and Idvd.
    Now today when I opened my computer I get as usual the white screen with the Apple symbol but there were all over the screen vertical lines with green pixels and after a while the screen gets grey and I get message to restart my computer using the power button or the restart button and when I do so each time the same is happening somebody can tell me what is happening and what caused this. This computer is my work and now I have no income anymore.
    On the Apple support site they are asking to enter the serial number and when I do so I get message it is wrong but it is the only one I have and I buy this computer in Cairo Egypt. I am living in Hurghada in Egypt for the moment. When I call the technical support of the shop where I buy it they are telling me that it is the hard disk or ram and that I probably lost everything on it and they are asking a big amount to repair.
    Can somebody advise me on this matter. Thanks in advance

    You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
    If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
    You can also boot into Safe mode
    To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
          Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
    During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
    Please post back with results,
    To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • Strange thing when moving files

    Since upgrading to lion have had no problems but today a really strange thing happened when moving a file by drag and drop to a usb stick.
    Dragged and dropped the file no problem then dropped the stick to unmount it.
    Removed the stick ok, then when looking at the desktop the stick was still there and the file was still over the stick.
    The only way i could get rid of these ghost files was to reboot.
    It happened everytime i did this
    Any idea what maybe happening.
    I tried to drag and drop the ghost files in the bin but they would not move

    Hi,
    this sounds like a customer support case. I am not sure this can be solved on the forum unless some other users have the same problem and know how to work around it. If this is due to a platform bug then the only solution is customer support to get this fixed.

  • Strange thing happens when smplayer use xv-intel video overlay

    i started to notice some strange thing happens when i turn on the desktop composting effect on kde,smplayer's video  show blue colors,and smplayer menu has a thick blue line surrounding it.
    whatever other windows i dragged over the smplayer show the same effect,which is very annoying. i figured it's something with the video output.
    the default video output is xv-intel video overlay,so i changed it to xv,gl,etc,and things become normal,xv-intel textured video works fine,too.
    of course if i turn off the compositing effect,everything will be ok.
    so it's because there are conflicts between the desktop effects and the xv-intel video overlay output?
