Strange thumbnail rendering on import

I have been importing pictures in batches of maybe a few dozen at a time today and have had no problems (LR 2.0, Win XP). In my last import of 33, some old pictures had shown up - with the keywords of the new import. I let the import complete, closed LR, and brought it back up. Wallah - the default library view of the last import seems correct with just the correct 33 images.
What did I likely do wrong? Should I now be suspect of the catalog (which I backup multiple times a day) or just chalk it up to a fluke of sorts? I've never seen something like this before. Thanks.
Dilip

Hmm, that does seem strange. So you're seeing old images already in your catalog in the import dialog screen's previews along with the new images you're importing from a card, or disk, and you're sure the "import source" location does not contain originals of these older images? Has this happened more than this one time?
Maybe someone else has experienced something similar, or has a better idea of what might have happened.
Sorry I don't have any other ideas (like if deleting your prefs or going to 2.1RC would help, or if it might be some kind of memory issue, but I don't know) - Good luck.

  • Why is Lightroom 2.4 Thumbnail Rendering SLOOOOOOOOW...?

For some reason Lightroom 2.4 is taking an enormous amount of time to render thumbnail previews and in spite of having my thumbnail cache set to 50 GB, it still re-renders the thumbnails every single time I use the scroll bar.
Every other aspect of Lightroom performs just fine on my machine.  But the library is so slow that it is unusable.  Every time I touch the scroll bar I can see a somewhat darker preview of the thumbnails and then as soon as I stop scrolling, the CPU shoots up to 100% utilization and I watch as the thumbnails brighten and adjust one by one.  30 to 45 seconds later I can click on the thumbnails and navigate around just fine.  Performance is great in fact until I touch the scroll bar again.
The basic question is this.  Why does Lightroom refuse to cache my thumbnails?  And why does it take soooo long to render them when Vista's explorer can render hundreds of thumbnails off even a flash card in seconds?  Even if thumbnail rendering was slow it would be fine if Lightroom would only cache them for me so it doesn't have to redo it every time I scroll back and forth.  Shouldn't there be an option to render thumbnails on import as well as 1:1 previews?
I am running Vista 64 bit with 4GB of RAM with a Gforce 7600GT graphics card.  My library has about 18,000 images in it.  But I've also tried with a brand new small catalog.  I'm shooting and processing Nikon D300 RAW files.
I've done all the standard performance tweaks that everyone talks about:
    1.  I render 1:1 previews and never expire them.
    2.  I have tried all the various nvidia card tweaks.
    3.  I've updated to the latest and greatest nvidia drivers.
    4.  I have my catalog on a separate drive from my images, and my thumbnail cache on yet a 3rd drive.
    5.  My machine has plenty of RAM, and in fact Lightroom is only using 1.5GB leaving me with well over 1GB remaining.
    6.  My machine is not swapping at all.
I've been reading and reading for the past 24 hours about this issue but have yet to come up with an answer to it.  I did find this old thread from over a year ago that describes the EXACT same problem I am experiencing except his problem was with version 2.3:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/1395391#1395391
Does anyone have ANY idea what can be causing this?  As is, I can't use Lightroom under these conditions.
    Thanks!

So I spent all evening experimenting with different things in Lightroom to try and improve performance and found 1 solution that worked.  Although I'm not sure why.
I understand that a design decision was made to render thumbs on the fly.  Fine.  But what I couldn't understand was why it took so incredibly long.  I mean the process was literally locking up my entire machine every time I touched the scroll bar.
The ONLY thing I could get to clear up the problem was to select the top level folder in my catalog, and export the entire catalog as a new catalog.  For export I did NOT choose to export the image files or the previews since I only wanted to keep my database (image adjustments, keywords, etc).
Upon opening this newly created catalog, of course everything was slow because there are no previews for anything.  Fine.  So I chose to render standard sized previews for a couple of the folders in the catalog (about 150 photos each).  And then lightroom became extremely fast for browsing and scrolling through thumbnails on those particular folders.
What I can't undertand is why rendering standard sized previews on my old catalog (same photos, same folder) does not improve performance, yet doing it for the new catalog which should be an exact copy DOES improve performance.
The only thing I can think of is that my original catalog must have either been corrupt or there may be some upper limit on how many previews Lightroom can handle gracefully?  Since I had standard previews for my entire catalog before.
I'm going to try and render standard sized previews on my entire new catalog tonight and see if the performance remains snappy.  But something is definitely not right here.

  • Crashing on Thumbnail Rendering

Aperture 2.1.1 will crash on the same image it's trying to render a thumbnail of every single time.
After importing 16,000 images, thumbnail rendering will pause at #5902, the spinning "beach ball" appears, then Aperture closes and shows me the crash log.
I've repaired Permissions, rebuilt the database(Option+Command>Launch), trashed the entire import and associated preference file and tried three times to reimport with identical results. Aperture crashes at thumbnail #5902. I can reopen Aperture but it automatically resumes Thumbnail creation and will crash soon thereafter. I have not found a way to stop Aperture from rendering thumbnails on a restart.
I have reviewed the crash log but failed to find a referenced image which might be causing this problem. I'm now running out of ideas of how to fix Aperture on this machine. I have a nearly identical set of images on an Intel iMac 2.8 GHz, 4Gb RAM and Aperture runs brilliantly on it. I'm hoping someone has a fresh perspective that can lead me to a stable install of Aperture on my iMac G5.
    Thanks!
BACKGROUND: The troublesome Aperture install is on an older iMac 2.0 G5 without the built in iSight. It has 2Gb of RAM, 250Gb HD. Before importing the 16,000 images, I performed a HD reformat and new install of Leopard, patched to 10.5.4, then installed and patched to Aperture 2.1.1. I use this iMac in a backup location and unfortunately I'm not at that location now, though I will be next week. This iMac has had several "issues" in the past, power supply failure, a graphics board failure, and a hard drive failure (all fixed under warranty). It has always run hot when working hard, such as thumbnail rendering, often peaking at 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Apple tells me this temperature is normal. I've run Apple's memory tests in the past with passing results.

    Well, I have now:
    • Performed a consistency check
    • deferred the thumbnails and manually rebuilt them
Neither of which worked, but did recover me about 300mb of space.... I'm now rebuilding the library, but it looks like it will take about 3 hours to do that. I hope it works.... I cant tell which of the photos is bad and should be gotten rid of.
+(In a side note, I'm going to try to go through my old photos and start getting rid of the real duffers, I think a 700gb library is too chunky. I've had some bad house-keeping habit develop.)+

  • No thumbnails in LR3 import window

I no longer have any thumbnails in the import window for LR3.  The options to "Check All" & "Check None" are still there but with no thumbnails to reference...

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried with that option checked and unchecked. In neither case was a higher-res thumbnail generated when I changed the thumbnail size using the slider. So far, Aperture insists on providing a thumbnail that is perhaps 150x150 and then resizing that thumbnail—pixellation and all—when the thumbnail size is increased.

  • Lr5.3 - No thumbnails previews when importing DNG's from Pentax K-3

    Hi all,
It worked when I first updated Lr to latest version (5,3) but for some reason it's not showing thumbnails anymore when importing pictures from SDCard.
I tried re installing with no success.
I dont know where to look for, I am under MAC OS Lion - 10.7 -
    Best wishes for Christmas,
    DimC

    Suzanne,
    Thanks for your quick reply.
It doesnt show up in the import dialog screen, that's my issue exactly.
When I click on import, the import screen opens and I dont see any thumbnails for the pictures, only the generic DNG thumbnail.
When i import pics from either my K-5 or K20D there is the thumbnails available and I can then choose which pics to import.
It's not about thumbnails when the pictures are imported and availble in the library but to answer your question, the images on my SDCard are on the DCIM folder, same as when it was working fine.
    DimC
EDIT : I did a mistake by clicking on "CORRECT" for Suzanne's post, my bad.

How can apple send out an os update that renders an important function of the software/hardware to not work? They knowingly have sent out this new os update for iPad which makes airplay nonfunctining! I need this for my business!  I could understand if they didn't know, but it is all over the Internet! When I went in to have it revert back to os6 (which worked fine!) I was actually asked if I had done any research before I installed the upgrade! As if this is the consumer's fault for being dumb enough to fall for the upgrade!

That is not what I have discovered, nor what others have discovered, nor what I was told when I went the Genius Bar.  I cannot remotely mirror to my MacBook Pro and it only started the day after I installed the upgrade.  We tested it with an iPad that had not been upgraded, no problem.

  • PSE 11 will not make thumbnails for newly imported photos

Running PSE 11 on Windows 7 64 bit. It was making and displaying thumbnails for imported photos fine until recently, but no longer does. Still displaying thumbnails for earlier photos. Windows displays thumbnails fine, and PSE shows the thumbnails during the import process but not in the organiser afterwards.
    I have tried:
    right click - update thumbnail
Repair catalog (which identified that there are problems in the thumbnail cache, but doesn't fix it)
    Uninstall/reinstall
    Still not working.
    Any ideas?

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.
Thanks for the help so far,

  • Missing Thumbnails in Organizer Importing Function

I recently upgraded my my operating system from Windows XP to Vista.  When I used the import function in Elements Organizer (with XP) I could preview the thumbnails and select the desired images on the camera or compact flash card.  Now that I have moved to Vista the thumbnail preview or selection is no longer visible or accessable.
I have been through the software options, search engines and this forum but have seen nothing about this problem.  I do sometimes have a perchance to miss the obvious and apologize if this is the case.  Any help is appreciated.
    OS Windows Vista 64 bit
    Photoshop elements 9
    8Gb RAM

Possibly due to display or dpi settings in the Windows control panel being below 96 dpi or 100% especially if you have a short screen e.g. laptop or notebook.
A work around is to import everything from the card into a folder on the hard drive. Then use File à Get Photos
It’s then possible to select and deselect from the Organizer import dialog.

  • Lightroom 1.4.1 Old thumbnails appear when importing new photos

I have recently been having a wierd issue with Lightroom 1.4.1 that on an initial scan of the forums have not found answered (apologies if this is has appeared before)
When importing a new batch of photos, the initial preview thumbnails display old images that already exist in my library.
These preview images sometime change quickly to the fresh imported image but when I import a large volume of RAW files the old images sometimes take a long time to change to the new ones, and sometimes require me to open each photo individually in order to update the thumbs which is slow and laborious.
I'm assuming that the numbers of my new images may be the same as existing ones and that's where the confusion arises.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    cheers
    Olly

The problem could be another program that's indexing your files.
Try installing Process Explorer (or the command line "Handle" program), both from Microsoft/SysInternals, and see if there's a process other than Lightroom that has the file open.

  • How to set up so that 1920 x 1080  h.264 files don't need to be rendered when importing onto timeline

Is there a way to set up final cut express to default to the proper settings so that 1920 x 1080 h.246 mov files don't have to be rendered when dropped onto the timeline? It is really not efficient to work on something when it takes hours to render. Thanks

    Thanks Tom,
Is it the same in fcs? Or does fcs have the capacity to import without render to timeline?
    Appreciate the reply.

  • Strange Edge After FCP Import

So I have a weird problem that I couldn't find an answer for on the forums. After creating an opening title sequence for a film in Motion 2, I imported the motn file into FCP and got a strange 1 pixel border around the entire frame. It looks like the gradient layer I'm using above it isn't covering that pixel, but the numbers prove that theory wrong. I'll send the file to anyone that wants to take a look at it. The film was shot in DVCPRO HD in 720p at 24 frames a second. I used an exported slug from FCP for project settings. If anyone has any advice/questions/related problems please let me know ASAP. Thanks a million in advance!
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Final Cut Pro Studio

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually discovered the "fix" before reading your reply. I altered the size of the gradient and solid generators to be 980 x 740 (from 960 x 720), making sure no layer cropping was taking place on the root level. After quickly checking the updated file in Final Cut, the 1 pixel border was completely gone.

  • No thumbnails when I import a file

When I import an mp4, imovie does not generate thumbnails--or show any evidence of the file at all. But when I look in Finder I see that the imported file is there under new projects. I'm afraid that I deleted some important component or something. Suggestions?

Hi jdoschad - your video is most likely MPEG1 format which needs to be converted to DV for it to play correctly in iMovie. To do this you will need:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):

  • Thumbnails missing on import

When I import raw files from my Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III into lightroom the thumbnail previews do not appear, just greyed out. I am using v 1.41 and camera raw 4.41. The same occurs in lightroom v2.0 beta.

The Report refers specifically to the 3ivx issue:
    __DATA                 0000000019987000-00000000199a7000 [  128K] rw-/rwx SM=PRV  /Library/Application Support/3ivx/*.dylib
Try trash the 3ivx folder from
    HD/Library/Application Support
    I don't understand this:
I moved my library to a external harddrive a year or so ago, using the name test with a master and alias in folder.
Moving the Lbrary doesn't require any aliases or such like. Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' to point it at a library in a new location.

  • Thumbnail rendering

    Hi
I like everything about Lightroom 2 except it's treatment of thumbnails. I have reams of similar photos so find that picking out the correct one from its thumbnails is slow and tedious. The wait whilst it twice re-renders every thumbnail seems interminable, especially as it only does it one screen at a time. I'm used to Expression Media which has loads of faults but does at least give you a nice crisp thumbnail every time with no re-rendering.
Is there no way of persuading it to render every thumb and save them, like it does previews?
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
    Tim

    > Is there no way of persuading it to render every thumb and save them, like it does previews?
It already does. It just loads the low-res ones first.
