Strange type substitution?
For a while now word docs will open up in pages using of all things the font Caribbean Island -- not bad... if I was a pirate! This is really goofy/annoying, and I wish I knew how to prevent it (it's obviously jumping in for some other font)?
Thanks
If you open the font file with the free Hexedit, you will find the string
"RegularTimes New Roman"
I edited it as:
"RegularTymes New Roman"
Then I continued to search for "Times" and found an other occurence after a block containing the strings:
NULL
Spade
Asterisk
I edited it as Tymes
and now, it no longer interfere with Times New Roman.

Hi there,
I am using a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.5.2. It has suddenly started to have problems with the fonts in fontbook and also doing some very strange font substitutions.
Instead of showing text normally it is replacing it with random characters. You can kind of read it but it's not real letters. I have a screenshot of it but don't know how to post the image on here.
This substitution is happening in Mail, Preview and Safari, so seems to be with native OS X software.
Any ideas?Hi Simon,
Have you gone to FontBook and resolved duplicates?
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your fonts work in that User acct? (That will tell where your font issue is coming from - whether it's in your Home fonts folder or a system fonts folder) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account. Check your fonts in that account and let us know the result.
Also, have you disabled Helvetica Fractions, Helvetica Neue and Times Phonetic, if you have them? They are known troublemakers.
Here is a user tip by Kurt Lang that lists all necessary system fonts and their locations. Also installed fonts and their font folders and loacation from Apple.

Is element/type substitution supported?
Hi,
I have a schema that uses element/type substitution group. When I try to use these elements/types in <assign> section, I always get error saying type not found.
I'm wondering if the element/type substitution is supported? If yes, is there any samples?
I'm using PM2.1.1/Designer 0.9.10
Thanks in advance.The WSDL of the EachService is test.wsdl (test1.xsd, test2.xsd) in the WSDLTest.jar ZIP file that I sent to [email protected] yesterday.

Acrobat 7 Standard making strange character substitutions
Yes, we're still using Acrobat 7.
Acrobat has always been unable to handle some fonts (particularly decorative fonts such as cursive fonts) but until recently it has handled most common fonts reasonably well.
Today I created a document in MS Word and created a pdf file from it by using the "Adobe PDF" printer driver selection -- as usual.
And, of course, Acrobat created the PDF file, as it always has....
BUT today Acrobat is changing some of the characters within one font.
Acrobat is changing ordinary zero characters to a slashed zero character (which doesn't even exist in this font)
Acrobat is changing ordinary apostrophe characters into some strange large capital O with a tilde over it. Interestingly enough, Acrobat is inserting this enormous character but only leaving the amount of space normally occupied by the regular apostrophe, so that the s after the apostrophe is coming out inside the middle of the O character.
And Acrobat is changing the degree symbol character to a 1/4 fraction character.
Interestingly enough Acrobat makes these substitutions only in one specific font within the document. Parts of the text that are in a different font or even in the same font but in BOLD are not having the problem.
The font where Acrobat makes these strange substitutions is Windows' own Arial font -- specifically 11 point Arial regular -- it doesn't make these strange substitutions in text written in 11 point Arial Bold or in Times New RomanThis is an issue with fonts not being embedded in a PDF and with 4 fonts that are listed by Acrobat. I have the link to the knowledge base on another computer, but you can search for it. The solution is to remove 4 fonts as I recall. Then the font substitution works correctly. The problem is finding the problem fonts in the knowledge base.

Itunes on windows 8 has strange type when signing in
Hi, when I installed the latest update to iTunes on Windows 8, my Sign In under Store comes out with a strange coded font.
now I cannot sign in to iTunes on the computer. Has anyone else experienced this. I tried rebooting and looking for updates to the keyboard. What else can I do.I have the exact same propblem. Microsoft dialed in and changed something in the Environment settings, then I had a problem with duplicates thate weren't there and Apple helped with that without actually fixing the problem and now I have the crash problem just before the iTunes Store loads and now I can't sync anymore.
I have to go to the store on my iPhone which downloads it to iTunes but I can't move playlists to my iPhone anymore.
This is going to cost me another $20 for Apple phone support. Wish I had an answer but no one seems to have one at Microsoft or Apple. -
Strange type ahead behavior when
This is hard to explain but when I'm typing in any of the input fields while creating a new email or replying to one, my text is automatically hi-light while I'm typing or when I pause. For example if I'm typing the words "check this out" when I type "check" it hi-lights "check" (like you're selecting text) then when I hit the space bar that text is whipped out because to was hi-lighted/selected.
This only seems to happen in mail in the input fields, not in the text body.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
-EdDo you see the same behavior in the address fields on the one hand and the subject field on the other when you are typing?
If the address gets completed automatically while you are typing in any address field then it is normal if you have the option checked in mail>preferences>composing.
As for the subject field, that is bizarre. Do you happen to have plug ins or input managers installed with Mail - such as grammar check, spell check... these would be located in home folder/library mail and in home folder/library/inputmanagers. Some of these utilities have been known to cause issues in Mail, but I am not sure if that is the case with you as I may not fully understand what is going on
hope this helps -
I purchased an Acer H203H but upon replacing the old Dell unit I was using as a secondary display off my laptop, I find that the only resolution this thing will produce is 1280x800, not anywhere near the 1400x900 or the max it's touted as having.I downloaded driver files but they arent of any useful nature.Did I just get rid of my Dell monitor for a boat anchor if it's 20" and cant produce beyond 1280x800? Or am I just missing something that's so horribly obvious it's eluding me? PS: I tried the acer chat...USELESS! After waiting forever a guy came on asked if he could help...after waiting forever again, he never responded to my question.....it was useless and I wasted like an hour waiting for nothing. Apprently he had to milk a chicken or something because he certainly didn't offer me any help!
Pretty weak support community. I have asked question in automotive, audio systems, motorcycles, firearms and etc communities and normally within 24 hours there are multiple people jumping all over solutions left and right. Here I sit some 48 hours in with a new monitor that can't display anywhere near it's capabilities, even after installing the driver I downloaded and nobody has any clue what to suggest, and when i contact Acer chat support they want to charge me to tell me how to resolve the issue? Yeah, I think this is my last endeavor with an Acer product. Can't wait to unload this piece of crap and get something that works. Thanks for nothing Acer. Your products and service SUCK!

I get these weird fonts on webpages that look like fractions. How do I get rid of these crazy fonts? Help!!!!
if it is outside of just safari i wonder if there is some corruption in the fonts.... at which point i would try repairing the HD by booting from the install cd and then using disc utility.
if that fails, there is always archive and install, keep your stuff but hopefuly fix the problem.... -
WSDL first. Namespace of complx type's child elements.
Hello!
I've got strange (for me) behavior of wscompile.
I started to develop a web service from a WSDL definition (document-literal). I built two services built on the written WSDL: one in Java (was deployed to JBoss) and one in .Net. Also I wrote a Java client that should be talking to either .Java or Net service.
The Java client communicates with .Net service properly. But doesn’t work with Java one. It fails to desterilise the structure.
My schema was defined with elementFormDefault="qualified", attributeFormDefault="unqualified". And there was a type that consists of some child elements. After comparing the SOAP messages from the services I payed attention that the Java service doesn’t define a namespace for child elements:
From .Net:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<soap:Envelope
xmlns:soap=http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/ xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<soap:Body>
<FindUserResponse xmlns="http://echo.test/types">
<User name="First" surname="Unknown"/>
<User name="Second" surname="Unknown"/>
</FindUserResponse>
</soap:Body>
</soap:Envelope>
From Java:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<soapenv:Envelope xmlns:soapenv=http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/ xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<soapenv:Body>
<ns1:FindUserResponse xmlns:ns1="http://echo.test/types">
<User name="Mr.First" surname="Unknown"/>
<User name="Mr.Second" surname="Unknown"/>
</ns1:FindUserResponse>
</soapenv:Body>
</soapenv:Envelope>
So I think wscompile generates the server side type serialization wrongly - child elements of complex structure are unqualified. But the client code is generated properly.
When I defined in WSDL that the child elements of my complex type has an attribute: form="unqualified" and recompiled the services and the client, everything starts working.
Does somebody have any clue of the reason of such strange behaviour?
Thanks in advance.I have the same problem.Jboss+Wscompile, and I in the Sopa response elements are not qualified. could you fix this issue? I need to use type substitution and I can not ahve unqualified as default.

Hi all. This is a new error I've never seen before.
It's stopping me doing anything at all really.
As soon as I start up FCP and click on a sequence I get this message: 'Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card.'
Then I click on OK and it says 'Error - Out of memory.'
I've heard rumours that it could be the fact I'm using a strange type of JPEG, but it still happens with PNGs.
I've made sure my scratch disks are all going to the right place. I also have 100gb of free space.
The version of FCP I'm using is 6.0.5. I'm using an iMac with OSX 10.4.11 (yes, I know it's old!) and I've downloaded the latest version of Quicktime.
Help, anyone? I have an assignment due in tomorrow.
Many thanks...p.s. having looked at other posts, perhaps I am missing some (or all) of the relevant codecs?
In the folder Macintosh HD > Library > Quicktime
there is basically nothing. Do you think this is the problem?
If so, where do I download FCP codecs from?
Many thanks.. -
Jittery type in CS6 videos?
I love the video capabilities in CS6, but I'm noticing some strange type behaviour in rendered videos, particularly in type in motion.
This is a rough cut of a promotional video I'm putting together in CS6, and if you watch carefully you'll see that the type elements seem as if they've had a caffeine overdose! There's a definite jitter to the type, and I can't seem to get rid of this. I've experimented with various frame rates various output options, but the strangeness in any degree of type motion remains. For my money, this jitter is that pronounced that could could well be a filter effect that in some cases could be useful, but when it occurs by default it's just plain annoying, and wrong!
Any thoughts/ideas anyone?
You can download the rough cut here:
http://www.timshelbourne.net/taq project3.mp4
Thanks,
Tim.Hi Tim,
The antialiasing in text layers can create some jitter for certain antialias settings.
Select the text layer you're animating and choose the Smooth antialias style in the options bar. This should reduce or eliminate the jitter completely. Strong antialiasing also works pretty well.
The only other workaround is to rasterize the text layer, but that leads to a resolving issue when animating an up-scaled transform.
Let me know if this works for you! -
I recently acquired a 17" G4 iMac, which seems to work very well. When I first got it the OS install was hosed so I wrote zeros to the drive and installed 10.4. After the install, everything functioned normally with the exception of a constant static, buzzing sound.
Occasionally it would go away for a period of time and then come back. It's one of those strange types of electrical noises that not everybody can hear. I've read so many discussions on these forums about noises that my eyes started to bleed and nobody seems to be having the same problem.
I replaced the HD about 2 weeks ago and ever since then the noise is quieter and not as constant, but it is still there. I'm concerned that it is related somehow to the graphics card because anytime I open a graphics intensive program (such as google earth or my dashboard) it makes the noise.
Any ideas?
17" iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)My first thought, is that you might be hearing a cooling fan.
This idea is supported by the fact that you say it gets louder when loading graphically intensive apps. And, that the noise changed when you replaced the hard drive.
Now, that may not sound right at first, but here is my way of thinking:
The more intensive apps are going to demand more of the CPU. The more the CPU is taxed, the hotter it gets. The hotter it gets, the faster the fan spins.
My thought, is that the fan may be dirty. So, that could cause it's sound to be less smooth, and a little noisier.
Now, what's that got to do with the hard drive?
Well, you may have knocked some dust off of it while you were replacing the hard drive.
I'd go ahead and open the computer back up, and see if you can locate the fan.
Take some compressed air (low pressure such as canned compressed air), and blow away any dust you find in the system. Especially on the fan blades.
I haven't been inside one of the G4 iMacs. So, I cannot say for certain if there is more than one fan.
But, if I had to guess, I would speculate that you are hearing fan noise.
If the fans are the cause of the sound, and cleaning them doesn't remove the noise, then I would consider replacing them.
Sometimes the bearings wear out, and they'll get a little noisier.
But, with any luck, you'll find that cleaning the dust off the fan blades will restore a smooth sound. -
Missing fonts in Preflight NOT in document
I'm using ID CS3 (5.03) and I'm relatively new to ID and Leopard. I've just started working with an editor who's using InCopy CS3 on a Mac and we've been having some font problems. I've just realized I'm going to have to update my font library to start using Open Type fonts because when I shared my old Postscript fonts with the editor they didn't work on her system.
I've purchase the OpenType fonts I need but when I relinked her InCopy files to my ID doc there were some strange font substitutions and I did "Find font" and replaced the unwanted fonts with the ones I wanted. I also went through all the Paragraph and Character Styles to make sure only the fonts I want are there.
So, in "Find font" only the fonts I want are listed but when I try Preflight, it still shows the unwanted font substitutions. If I click on the bullet "find font" it doesn't show up in the dialog box. Also, if I export as a PDF the unwanted fonts don't show up in the embedded fonts and there don't appear to be any problems. I tried saving as an INCX file and when I open, I still have a problem with Preflight but not "Find font".
It's going to be a long document but we're in the beginning stages so I don't want any problems with the commercial printer.
I found this in the database but it doesn't solve my problem (it just says to use the most recent update):
Fonts appear as missing even though they have not been used in InDesign CS2 document
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401180&sliceId=2
Any suggestions about how I can resolve the Preflight problem which doesn't show up in the document?Yes, I did try that and the fonts still appeared in Preflight but not in Find fonts. Since I'm only about 30pp. into a 150+pp. document I decided to copy/paste into a new document and check Preflight everytime I did a new section. It did help me determine where the problems were (mostly in the notes but a few odd spaces here and there). And when I placed/relinked the InCopy docs the bad fonts would sometimes appear but I was able to catch them and replace them in the beginning so they didn't show up in Preflight. There were no characters with the bad fonts only spaces or hard returns. Maybe the find font feature can't find a font w/o any characters? This was definitely a time consuming effort but hopefully I won't have to go through it again!

PLEASE SUGGEST A SOLUTION FOR THIS
Thanks

Best regards
Johannes
