Strangely named folders appearing in preferences..... ì∑±†ì∑±† or √·±†

A series of very strangely named folders have appeared in my username>Library> Preferences folder.
They are all empty but are named with various Greek and other characters. Is it safe to delete them and why are they appearing?
Thanks
Dave

Thanks Terence. I thought it was safe but it is always good to check. I don't know why it is doing this now as I've not seen it in the past.

  • Strange .plist Files Appearing in Preferences

Hi. I've posted this on the Waves forum as well as Digidesign, but just in case anyone here has seen something similar happen, I thought I would ask here as well...
When I start up Pro Tools 7.4.2 and select any of the Waves plug-ins, the following 12 .plist files appear in my User/Library/Preferences folder:
    com.AdatemsDesign.NewQuality.plist
    com.AltenearTechnology.DynaOnline.plist
    com.AltenearTechnology.Infinisys.plist
    com.AtenetsCorporation.Exocarp.plist
    com.IncorPartners.Decompose.plist
    com.LtrumIncorporated.Exocarp.plist
    com.micrologyasia.cytoplasm.plist
    com.Orangesource.Bibliographer.plist
    com.REFTechnology.Enterprisedigital.plist
    com.syspartners.achlorhydria.plist
    com.systel.transmit.plist
    com.Utilineau.Remove.plist
These files only appear when Waves plug-ins are used. I was unable to do any online search for these .plist files or even the odd "corporation-like" naming; and this is what has me concerned. The Digidesign people say "contact Waves", the Waves people say "those aren't our files", but still they appear -- even after two complete wipes and re-installs.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? Regardless of the software used?
    Thanks!
    Rob

That's funny -- I copy/pasted the .plist from TextEdit into the message; it was just a couple of upward arrow symbols. It seems I can't place them without it disappearing after posting the message. Here's a couple of links to the messages I get when I tried to open one of the .plist files in Plist Edit Pro:

    http://web.me.com/robertmichaelperry/Site/Picture2.png
You can see on the second one that's all that shows on the raw text of the file.
I wonder if it's not some kind of placeholder or security thing. Still I am surprised that it did not turn up in an internet search.
If you wanted to, you could delete one of them and then create a plain empty text file with the identical name but change the permissions so that only you can read/write it - not even the system and see what happens. Does it still get replaced by the other one, or does something "complain" about not being able to write a file etc.
It is indeed a very curious thing.

  • Strange folders in my Preferences

    Hi All,
Since I got this iMac a few weeks ago I've been seeing several wierdly named folders appearing in my Users/Library/Preferences folder. It seems like the number of them grows each time I use the Mac. When I click on them nothing happens, that is they either don't open or there is nothing in them. I've checked in the Library/Preferences and System/Library/Preferences folders and there are none of these in either of them. Here are a few examples of the names:
    {’ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
    {fi0ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
    |0ê◊8øˇ‘ê†~
Does anyone know what these are?
    Thanks.

  • Strange Folders Appear in Root Directory

After a clean install of 10.5 on a MacBook and MacBook Pro, and then applying all of the Software Update recommended updates, I'm noticing some strange folders appear in my root directory.
On the MacBook Pro, I now have a Developer folder with Applet Launcher and Jar Bundler inside. Obviously, these are Java tools, but I'm not sure what installed them. I do not have any developer tools installed on this machine.
On the MacBook, I'm seeing links to the Unix directories bin, sbin, etc, and so forth in the root folder. Again, not sure how they got there, or what app may have created them.
Both the MacBook Pro and MacBook have essentially the same applications and updates applied, so I'm at a loss as to why there's the inconsistency.
    Thanks,
    JKG

Something went awry during the installation that has made some invisible items visible. The following outlines how to fix the problem. It's a bit complicated:
It's a bit of a confusion in Leopard. Start by downloading Pacifist at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Open Pacifist.
Insert your Leopard DVD into the optical drive. Select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter:
    /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/
Click on the Go button. Locate the OSInstall.pkg file and drag it to the Pacifist window. Click on the Resources tab in the Pacifist list window. Open the Scripts folder and locate the hidden_MacOS9 file and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. I would extract it the the /usr/sbin/ directory. Now Open the Tools folder and locate the SetHidden command. Select it and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. Extract it also to the /usr/sbin/ directory.
Now you can quit Pacifist. Open the Terminal app in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following commands pressing RETURN after each:
    cd /usr/sbin
    sudo ./SetHidden / hidden_MacOS9
Enter your password which will not be echoed.

  • IMAP folders appear under Inbox

I am using Mail.app with 6 imap accounts. For two of the accounts (both on cyrus-imapd servers, I believe), all of the folders appear as subfolders of that accounts Inbox. I am able to successfully assign the Junk, Trash, Sent, etc. folders. Every unassaigned folder, however, appears under Inbox. If I place "INBOX" (without quotes) as my IMAP Path Prefix, as instructed by my ISP (one I host), I cannot connect to any of the subfolders (and they remain under "Inbox").
For both accounts, I can also use a webmail server, where every folder does appear under INBOX.
As of a couple months ago, Mail had always worked perfectly for me. For some unknown reason, when starting Mail one day, I had to reset many of my prefereneces. From that point on, I have had this above problem with two of my accounts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These being IMAP accounts, you may try re-creating them, i.e. deleting them in Preferences > Accounts and setting them up again from scratch. INBOX should definitely be in the IMAP Path Prefix. You may try bypassing the Account Setup “Assistant” by holding the Option (Alt) key down when clicking on the [+] button, so that Mail doesn’t attempt to connect to the server until the account has been completely configured.
Before deleting the accounts, you may want to make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example (quit Mail first).

  • Multiple copies of bookmark folders appear with different contents in each one; I'm trying to sync bookmarks on 3 computers

That's pretty much it: I have a lot of bookmark folders, and when I tried to replace xmarks with sync, and began to sync additional computers, multiple non-identical copies of the bookmark folders began to appear; it would seem that 3 of each appeared, but they were not all the same, as if some bookmarks within folders were distributed across multiple identically named folders. What's up?

  • Strange System Shares appear on SOFS management page

Hi, my SOFS cluster is working perfectly fine, but Strange Shares keep appearing on the Server management page for the file and storage > shares section, it grows all the time and more shares appear, I have deleted them and it hasn't caused any issues.
does anyone know what they are for, and why they are being created ? could it be something todo with DPM backups ?
is this something to worry about or just ignore ?
    thanks
    Mark

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay in reply.
From the screenshot it seems to be a temp folder. And according to search with some keywords it look like these folders are related to DPM. You can post a question to DPM forum to see if it is a known issue. Here is the forum link:

  • Chmod 740 folders appearing

If anyone can help with this, please do.
We have a user on a G5 tower, 10.4.11, that has chmod 740 folders appearing on his machine.
They seem to correspond with Quark and/or Photoshop files.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

the topmost folder is generally named "chmod 740"
Holy cowabunga, something really ammis here, do you have an external backup drive to boot from?
Might even get HexEdit to try to look at a file or two to see what is in them for clues as to what is doing it, right now it looks like something is making a left turn when it sould be turning right!

why do all my desktop folders appear to be empty?..all of  a sudden....If I do an 'open,' I see a little red circle on the upper right hand corner with an arrow. When I click it, it tells me I have  number X files in the folder. But...I cannot see them....

You have done something which change the permissions and your user is not able to access anymore. You can play around and try to correct permissions manually by going to your home folder, right click on the Desktop folder and choose get info and when new window will be open, at the bottom of it, check if your username is listed and if has Read & Write permissions.
Other option is to boot to recovery mode (after starting up your computer press and hold CMD+R), then from top panel click on Utilities and choose Terminal. Once terminal is open, type in it resetpassword and when new window will be open, select Macintosh HD as your system drive, select your password and click on the RESET button which is next to "Reset home folder permissions and ACL". NOTE: do not reset your password, you don't have to.
Second options would be better in case if permissions on other folders been changed too.

  • My local folders appear to be in the trash folder, how do i move them?

I recently got a new PC and migrated my email folders. Since then I have noticed many emails seem to have disappeared when I look for them in trash or sent. I just noticed that my local folders appear to be in the trash folder: when I minimize "trash" they disappear. I'm thinking this may be the reason I keep losing emails but I can't figure out how this happened or to move the folders out of the trash.

No problem Bob...glad to be of assistance. To change the titles, you can either do this also when you have selected File>Get Info & then select on the "Info" tab or by clicking on the title of each Movie/TV Show in your library.

  • Network shared folders appear as 'sharepoint'

    Hello
I have 1 iMac and 2 windows 7 computers on my local small office network.
From the Mac I can see and access all shares on one PC, on the other, when I access via finder, the shared folders appear as 'sharepoint' and I cannot see any sub folders. I have checked settings on both PCs in the network centre and they seem identical.
Thanks if you can help. Regards

Hi, just an update...some of the problem is related to extensions. Some files have explicit extensions and others not. When I change the file extensions to an explicit extension (eg .pdf) then the file is fine.
However, there are no extensions on folders or folder aliases.
I've tried using chmod -x + file location/file name but that makes no difference to the alias, meaning that the Snow Leopard does not recognize the item as a short cut to another folder. Snow Leopard will only recognize the item as an alias if it's been created on a workstation running Snow Leopard OS. Very odd.

  • Apple TV does not appear in preferences and therefore I cannot sync. Help!!

Apple TV does not appear in devices and does not appear in preferences. I can access my music libary between ATV and Itunes.
What am I doing wrong? I will have no hair left shortly!!!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 shouldn't appear in devices or in preferences and you cannot sync content to the Apple TV 2, all those things relate to the Apple TV 1 only.

  • When I double-click the gold star to bookmark a site and click "Choose", none of my current folders appear in the drop-down under Bookmarks Menu.

Running 3.6.12 on Windows XP in my brand-new HP 6000 Pro, and when I double-click the gold star to bookmark a site, 5 of my 80-odd folders appear in the drop-down under Bookmarks Menu. But then, when I click "Choose", no list of current bookmarks appears, so I have to bookmark every time under "Unsorted", then drag each bookmark to its correct folder. What am I doing wrong? I use Firefox on my other 2 systems, and every folder appears on the drop-down, just like it should.

I don't use Xmarks, so I don't know whether that is a factor here...
If you use Ctrl+d on a bookmarked page, does the Edit Bookmark dialog appear?
Firefox doesn't have a convenient way to determine the location of a bookmark. One workaround is to use the extension [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/show-parent-folder/ Show Parent Folder] to add a column in the Library dialog showing the location of a bookmark. Then when you use the search function or Recently Bookmarked query, you should be able to discover the location.
The extension shows just the folder name by default. If that isn't unique enough, you can change a setting for the extension so it shows the full path down to that folder. To set this, open the Add-ons page, Extensions category, and use the Options button for Show Parent Folder.

  • Not all folders appear as available for LR4 import

I just installed LR4 and went to Import into a new catalogue.  Only a portion of my image folders on my main drive appear.  When I look at my on-site backup drive, they are all available.  The backup is, as you might expect, a dupe of the originals.  Images are a mixture of .dng and .cr2.  The actual import from the backup drive went fine.
    Running 64-bit LR4 on Win7.

I had the same effect again, as I tried to add more pictures: LR import navigation was showing me only 2 folders of 69.
This time I clicked on the triangle for the last folder (although there is no other folder underneath, so I am not sure why there is a triangle at all). This triangle moved from pointing to the right to pointing down and then all the other missing folders appeared in navigation pane for source selection.
I had hoped it would be a one-time effect for the very first import, but no: it seems to be re-occurring.
Could it be related to difficulties of LR4b to detect the folder structures from the OS? Which is Win7 32bit in my case.
I have this effect only when trying to access images on my NAS, but then I do not have that many folders in my strucutre on the laptop.
