Strangely pixelated Graphics with 13'' 2010 Macbook Pro and Lion

I have not noticed a particular pattern to the problem, but My Macbook Pro, at certain times, displays various graphical elements as very pixelated; this problem did not appear under Snow Leopard but has appeared on two clean installs of lion; I first noticed it in 10.7.2, but it has continued through the past two updates.
Macbook Pro 7,1 (Mid-2010 13'' Macbook Pro)
2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo
8 Gb Ram
Nvidia Geforce 320M
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
I attached Screenshots-on the mission control screenshot, look at the Chrome and Finder Icons, and on the Chrome one, look at the left tab at the top; While I have seen the issue in other places ie other graphics in Finder, as well as icons in Chrome and Safari, I couldn't obtain screenshots of these; the basic issue, however, is that various graphics all appear like the ones in the mission control screenshot.  I am unsure if this is a software problem, or more likely a hardware/driver problem.  Has anyone else experienced this issue and/or know of a fix for it?  Thank you.
Update- I have noticed a similar issue with the same model that other people have had, but my particular pixelation appears to look somewhat different.

IamAndrewWilson,
I have the same model MacBook Pro that you do. Have you tried booting from your Mac OS X Install DVD, to see if you can use the keyboard at that point?

  • Failed Logic Board with April 2010 MacBook Pro?

I went to the Genius Bar today to ask about repeated Kernel Errors with my 2010 MacBook Pro. The person who helped me said that the logic board was failing because of the graphics card and that it would cost $310 to repair.
My Mac is an A1286 model with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB Graphics.
Reading about Macs with NVIDIA graphics I immidately found that there were issues with the generation prior to my Mac, 2007-2008 Macs with NVIDIA 8600M GT.
So what I want to know is have any other Mac users had issues with their 2010 Macs and their graphics cards? My Mac has always run hot (too hot to actually use as a laptop because it turns my legs red!) and I figured it was just the nature of the machine. I now have one USB drive that is slowly failing (doesn't like my mouse). I haven't had any weird graphics issues, just the random restarts and a freeze now and then.

My March 2010 15" Macbook Pro's logic board just failed.  Here's my report:

  • Will it work with the 2010 MacBook Pro?

Can anyone tell me if the Apple DVI to ADC Adaptor will work with the 2010 MacBook Pro with DisplayPort using Apple's "Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter"?

I'd suggest checking out the drives at OWC:

They speak Mac and have excellent customer service.

Trouble with connection between Macbook Pro and Hp Deskjet 1510. (Nothing Prints).
I have a Macbook Pro and am having difficulty printing documents from ‘Pages' from my Hp Deskjet 1510. I have installed the necessary software for the printer and it is connected via USB. Every time I try to print the printer icon comes up as it should, 'printing' and then 'job completed' and then the icon disappears. (Nothing is printed.) I thought it might be something to do with Pages compatibility with the printer but exporting the document to Word or making it a PDF doesn’t change anything. I don’t have Microsoft Word on my computer. The scanner does work and when I printed a ‘Test Page’ that worked too.
Let me know if you know why this is happening.

With these settings the network now works flawlessly, however, when i have my ethernet cable plugged in, my internet access via my airport card(on the macbook pro) is no longer available. Hoping you can tell me why this would be with this info i've provided.
Educated guess. The networking devices have priorities as to which are used. The standard order is that Ethernet has a higher priority than Airport.
While your Ethernet is unplugged it is inactive and the Mac ignores it. Once you plug it in, the Mac sees that it is active and switches traffic to that interface.
I actually take advantage of this feature at home, but configuring my Airport and Ethernet with identical fixed IP addresses. Normally I'll use Airport, but if I'm copying a huge file and I want faster performance, I'll just walk my MacBook (previously iBook, previously Powerbook) over to my Ethernet switch and plug in my MacBook. Magically, the Mac detects that the Ethernet is active and continues the file transfer uninterrupted over the faster 100baseT Ethernet connection. When the transfer is finished, or if I really need to move back to the Comfy Chair, I unplug the Ethernet cable, and all activity reverts back to the Airport, all without disrupting any existing networking connections.
You on the other hand have totally different settings for your Ethernet and your Airport, so when you switch to Ethernet, you basically loose your Airport connections.
    Something you can try:
    System Preferences -> Network
Gear icon on the bottom left, next to the [+] [-] icons.
    Select *Set Service Order...*
Now Drag the network interfaces into the perfer priority order you want. In this case put Airport above Ethernet.
NOTE: You may want to create a new Network Location for this, instead of messing with your normal home Location (which is most likely the default Automatic. That way you have your original you can always fall back to.

In order to resolve the issue if it occurs again, more info would be helpful as to what occurred prior to the "hang." One potential fix would be to try a Safe Boot:
After the Mac is completely shut down, push the power button and immediately after the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
There should be a message that says "SafeBoot." After the Mac is completely booted, try restarting and see if the issue is gone.

  • Can I run Windows XP on my 2010 Macbook Pro running Lion?

    Hi,
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro running Lion. If I install BootCamp on it can I get Windows XP CD installed? I've heard compatibility issues so I'm asking here. Thanks.

No. BootCamp in Lion only supports Windows 7.

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro and Intel 530 SSD

    Hey everyone,
Does anyone have any information regarding upgrading my mid-2010 MacBook Pro i5 running Mavericks with an Intel 530 250GB SSD?  I have read some stories of people not being able to boot etc when running Lion with the 510/520 series.  If it is not compatible, any suggestions of a similar SSD from another manufacturer?
Thank you all in advance and Happy Thanksgiving!

@Clinton, thanks, I like this machine as well.
FWIW, I got the SSD with the "Data Doubler" from Macsales. For those who do not know this is a metal frame that allows a standard size 2.5" disk or SSD to be used in place of the optical drive, which in my case no longer was able to read many media disks anyway.
I setup the SSD in the old optical bay and left my 1TB Toshiba hard drive in the hard drive bay. I did this because I have some long ago memory of reading somewhere, perhaps in error, that the sudden motion sensor won't signal a hard drive in the optical bay in the case of an event.
The SSD is my boot device and main device while the hard drive is my media drive, movies, music, as well as the virtual Windows drive using Parallels. As a development machine this SSD has put new life into the old girl and saved me quite a nice chunck of change over getting a new machine.
One note; for my machine OWC recommends getting the 3G (SATA II) drive rather than a 6G (SATA III) as due to some quirk an OWC 6G drive will fall back to 1.5G speeds rather than 3G. Here is their list of machines:
    MacBookPro5,1
    MacBookPro5,2
    MacBookPro5,3
    MacBookPro5,4
    MacBookPro5,5

  • 2010 Macbook Pros and Leopard 10.5

I've recently found out the hard way that you cannot run Leopard 10.5 on a new Macbook Pro (2010 models). I sold off my old MBP (17" - 2006 model - Core Duo 2.16) and recently purchased a brand new MBP 17" Intel Core i7. I tried installing 10.5 on the internal hard drive. I tried booting from external hard drive with the 10.5 OS installed. Yesterday, I confirmed (after calling Apple Support) that the new 2010 MBP models will not run any old version of OSX - they will only run 10.6.4 and higher.
The reason why I would like to be running Leopard 10.5: so I can use some ExpressCard/34 adaptors I have - namely, the Duel Adaptor (a Panasonic P2 card reader). It is quite frustrating to find that the tools I've been using in my video work flow for years have come to a complete halt because I bought a brand new computer - a brand new computer with the same ports and connectivity as my previous computer... but with a newer, incompetent OS.
    My questions:
Is there a list of ExpressCard/34 devices that DO work on the 2010 MBP's with Snow Leopard 10.6.4 (even if you have to download the drivers)?
Is there a version of Leopard 10.5 that has been reprogrammed to work on the 2010 Macbook Pros with the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors?

Murat Lahur - Thanks for the research. That's all I could find as well.
rkaufmann87 - Thank you. I've heard rumors of hacked and/or manipulated versions of OSX, however, I've never seen one.
OrangeMarlin - Incompetent only in the sense that the Apple motto we love, "plug and play on a mac", seems untrue with so many drivers dropped, unsupported or unavailable for Snow Leopard. I have all the available drivers for P2 installed. I can read P2 cards by plugging the camera into the computer via firewire. However, plugging the camera into the computer to download footage means that the camera is tied to the computer. It was wonderful having a ExpressCard P2 card reader that downloaded the cards faster than firewire and kept the camera free for shooting on busy days.
As far as my research has shown, there is no 54 to 34 ExpressCard adapter that works with Snow Leopard. Therefore, Snow Leopard has seriously slowed my work flow and left me with useless devices.

  • What can one do with Bluetooth between MacBook Pro and iPhone?

    Hello,
I tried enabling Bluetooth on my MacBook Pro and iPhone, thinking I could file transfer some photographs. It seems not to work; after trying to "browse the device" it effectively 'times out' (as if it's a neverending 'loading' wait icon). I saw some other threads here, "I can't sync/connect my iPhone and iMac!" with various replies, like "you sync [Calendar agenda] via MobileMe, not via Bluetooth."
What does one do with Bluetooth? Can't I send files wirelessly from my phone to my laptop? If not, why not? If so, why is the connection wait interminable? I have enabled File Sharing and Bluetooth Sharing on my laptop, but see no direct means to do so in my phone's settings -- must this be done through iTunes? Do I need to configure something further before I can send files?
I have iPhone 3G Version 4.2.10 (last I checked -- still waiting to install an update) and Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.6.8).
    Thanks for your time!

"I tried enabling Bluetooth on my MacBook Pro and iPhone, thinking I could file transfer some photographs."
This is not a feature of iphone.  Never has been.
Other than tethering for internet, where provided by the carrier, you cannot connect to a computer/device/phone and do anything.
Bluetooth is for handsfree telephone devices/headsets, stereo speakers/headsets, some keyboards, some peer to peer apps from the app store and tethering where provided by the carrier.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Issues with Macbook Pro and Lion

    Hi Folks,
Since I upgraded to Lion I have been having issues with Lion/Macbook Pro.
On occassions whilst using my magic mouse the mouse will start highlighting everything, neither left or right clicking will alleviate this. The only option I have is to go to the Apple menu and right click to reveal it (left click does nothing). I then have to right click on restart which produces the restart window, I then have to press "enter" to reboot the Macbook.
This issue originally started with 10.7.2 and I was hoping 10.7.3 would cure this issue, unfortunately this is not the case.
I have tried using a Logitech wireless mouse to see if it is an issue with the Magic Mouse but the same happens.
One issue which I have noted on the forums is that Lion does not like external monitors and I use a Dell 2209WA with the Macbook Pro in clamshell mode but not sure if this may have any link.
I have tried everything I can find on the forums but to no avail and would be very grateful if anyone out there had similar issues or better had found a solution.
    Many thanks,
    Iain

Your understanding of the problem seems correct to me. There's no way to fix it except to replace the logic board.
