Strangeness on iWeb Pages When Published

I have multiple pages in iWeb that are all the same look but different text content. All the menus are the same. The colors are the same. I will only be changing text and the page name. So, I create the page the way I want and then duplicate the pages. I publish it to make sure all the links work but to my amazement, some of the page look right but many of the pages are different. I should add that I am not using the built in navigation menus--I created my own using text block with hyperlinks because I needed them to look a certain way. The menus are distorted (stretched, size reduced, position shifted), some of the menus  (text blocks with hyperlinks) have switched locations/order, the body regions (with graduated fill) are shifted down or even non-existent. I have a set of links in a text block (paragraph is a link) and the text formatting is also changed in different ways on each page (spacing is off, colors are different, link underlining could be on or off).
These are just one page duplicated and the page names changed with all the hyperlinks added.
I did notice that early on in my development, some page names also caused similar problems. If I named a page "About Us", I had similar problems but "About Me" worked, as did "ABOUT US". On some of the pages, the order of stacking (Send to back, Send to front) changed to menus in different ways. I know this sounds strange but this is my experience yesterday/today. I am so confused

Yes, you must use only the basic characters for site and page names. The following gives some info on page naming and characters not to use.
Renaming a website or webpage
You can rename a site or page at any time by double-clicking its name in the site organizer and typing the new name.
The page name appears at the top of the visitor's browser.
The site name is included in the website's address (URL):
     http://web.mac.com/your account name/
or
     http://web.me.com/your account name/
Renamed pages and sites (as well as the site's URL) change online the next time you publish.
IMPORTANT: If you rename a site, previously created links to your site won't work; be sure to notify your visitors, especially your blog or podcast subscribers.
iWeb now converts spaces in site names to "_".  Also avoid non-Roman characters; many get converted to numbers when you publish.
Other characters that aren't recommended for use in website names are: forward and backward slashes (/ \), brackets ([ ]), tilde (~), exclamation point !, question mark (?), "at" sign (@), number sign (#), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), asterisk (*), colon (:), equal sign (=), comma (,), and single and double quotation marks (' "). Using these characters may result in names with strange numbers in them.

  • IWeb movie pages, when published -- no movies

my iWeb movie pages, when published, came up lame, no movies, only areas where the movies should have been, all with faint Q's with question marks inside them
LONG STORY SHORT, MAKE SURE YOUR MOVIES (as well as being located in your MAC HD and its proper MOVIE sidebar, that you CUT AND PASTE all your MEDIA YOU'RE USING IN YOUR iWeb SITE,
CUT AND PASTE PHOTOS, MOVIES in dupe form right into your desktop where you've published your iWEB site folder.......that way, any browser, a .mac or outside web host, can locate your media better so that you don't get GHOST MEDIA PUBLISHING LIKE I DID...hopefully this will help both of us
ALSO, in any iWeb website (named SITE in your desktop, or iDisc, or whatever or wherever you publish it, or even if you can find where on earth on your HD it is published, remember, if you have any MEDIA at all, NOTE IN MY CASE MEDIA MEANS MOVIES (not photos, so I'm not speaking to the photo blogs people, only iWeb MOVIE folks) anyway, all the compressed poetry video clips are right there, in a separate folder called MEDIA, that is every iWeb site, when published to .mac or a folder, which contains movies in .mp4 format or .mov format, all these will appear right in your site's MEDIA FOLDER....
this is important as a concept....
also, if you're using an outside web host like me (so that all my movies will LOAD QUICKLY), don't forget when FTP'ing (file transfer protocol'ing) your iWeb changes to your web host from your original MAC HD folder....remember to also send to the FTP/outside web host your MEDIA folder inside your SITE
(which i only realized a couple hours ago, and which totally was a revelation, so i'm passing it along to you guys)....
if you'd like to know exactly what i do here in nyc, i video the poetry scene, now for 20 years, and create educational poetry DVDs.... and my website is today's equivalant of operating a virtual business.....
....oh-oh, since I video poetry in NYC and go direct into a standalone DVD recorder to make single tracks of each poem...and then through Popcorn's mp4 program, I can make a movie file
then..through QuickTime Pro's streaming compression system, reduce that file size to under 5 MBs,
well, after lots of headaches, i am able to have 200 streaming video clips on an iWeb site, which apple itself said was impossible, that iWeb was only geared for less ambitious projects
okay, so that is cool..until yesterday, when i began the whole process again with completely new poetry video clips....
first, the iWeb pages were designed correctly...that took time....then i published the new pages to .mac, and only some of the movies showed up on the published pages, some had a big bright Q (which means the browser identifies the movie and will within 20 seconds load that movie), but what wracked my brain all day and night yesterday, why were there areas where the browser only showed the faint Q/Question mark inside (meaning the browser cannot find the movie)
    so what the.....!
also i'm going from an iWed Folder to an FTP so I can use an outside web host and bypass THE MUCH SLOWER .mac browser (too slow when using movie clips for visitor to your site having to wait valuable seconds for **** movie to appear...with outside web host process almost immediate)
    .....any similar experiences?

I am having the same problem.
Now I am using iWeb 2.03. So when I uploaded the site to my server I see the Media folder you were talking about, and the videos are there. But when I go to the website I still get the faint Q with the question mark.
    Here is my site. http://mnorland.dadeschools.net
The videos are supposed to be in the Athletics page, then go to football highlights.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • IWeb Quits when Publishing - Apple Genius said to Archive & Reinstall

Just spent over an hour with an Apple Genius at the Apple store to see if he could alleviate my problem with iWeb quitting whenever I tried to publish. I've been using iWeb for the last 5 months and have successfully posted hundreds of blog posts and pictures to my site on a .Mac account - but in the last 24 hours, I've been unable to get new posts published because iweb has been crashing prior to finishing the publish request.
I've tried deleting the iWeb preferences in /myname/library/prefernces as well as clearing my cache files and plain old rebooting. Also tried reinstalling the 1.1. update. The Genius reinstalled iWeb at the store and then I updated. Nothing's been fixed. I still crash when I publish. The only possible solution (according to the Genius) is to bite the bullet and do an Archive and Install. Anyone had luck with this?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would go with a second User account first, as suggested by James.
If this doesn't work, I would be thinking corrupt prefs files within the domain file itself....
    1. Quit iWeb
    2. Navigate to the domain file, User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain
    3. CREATE A COPY OF THIS FILE, and then move it to somewhere safe.
    4. Now back to the original, "control+click" (Right click if you have one of those new fangled two button mice (mouses?!?) )
    5. From the pop-up menu, choose "Show Package Contents"
    6. Sort the finder window by "Kind", it brings all of the plist files inside iWeb together.
assets.YourUserName.plist - This one is a regular problem!
    ServerCachedResources.plist
    sharedassets.plist
    deletedComments.YourUserName.plist
I have deleted all of these when having different problems, not specifically iWeb quittting when publishing, I dont think that that has happened to me.
I do have a tendancy to lose blog comments, perhaps deleting these files has caused it.
I also know that once I have deleted them and relaunched iWeb, done a Publish All to .Mac, all of my problems have gone.
The plist files are all recreated the first time you do this.
You may or may not want to try this, but on a copy of your domain.sites file is there anything to lose? Other than your sanity?
You might want to do one at a time or all at once.
Anyway, thats my 2 pence worth, I'm English really!!!

  • How do I get the RSS feeds to work in iWeb'08 when published to FTP server?

There are so many unresolved questions because I have published to an FTP server (Netfirms). HOWEVER, my next task at hand is to resolve the issue of a non-working RSS feed and download capabilities.
    The published website is www.vibrationalvoyages.com.
When using Cyberduck to upload to Netfirms, I have to call the file name vibrationalvoyages.com because Netfirms organizes my files under a main folder called www (I also purchased the .org and .net extensions along with the singular spelling of the title, have forwarded those url's to the .com extension, which means I have different website names under Netfirm's main folder www, all pointing to www.vibrationalvoyages.com).
I have to drop the www. in front of vibrationalvoyages.com when publishing to a folder on my computer so, when Cyberduck uploads the files into the main www folder, they are read correctly and published as www.vibrationalvoyages.com. In Cyberduck, the ftp address to upload is vibrationalvoyage.netfirms.com
Before uploading, I use iTweak to insert the Statcounter tracking codes. Then, I use Rage to optimize the site to cut down on the weight (lots of photos). Then, finally, I get to upload which takes about an hour and a half.
SO, HOW DO I GET THE RSS FEEDS TO WORK AS WELL AS THE OPTION TO DOWNLOAD AN MP3 RECORDED MEDITATIONS? I eventually also want to include the download option of podcasts.
Please help! I am doing the best I can to stay in love with Mac but he is turning out to be a pot load of work and the love affair is wearing a little thin.
I haven't even asked about why iWeb still calls some pages 'The family picnic" or why it switches the url addresses to the individual pages. Probably because in the early stages, I copied an entry rather than just do a new one... but I'll worry about that later. I want to get this 'fixed' first and then I'll address the issue, following Roddy's advice to another writer about installing a flash player, for easy download of the MP3 meditations and for when I record the lessons as podcasts. Until I get this RSS issue resolved, however, podcast downloads are out of the question!

    Thank you for checking, Tom,
I'm confused. What do YOU get when you push the feed button? And why is it working on yours and not either of my machines?
Today, my Mac (w/Safari 4) gets the same error message: Safari can’t open the page Safari can’t open the page “feed:http://vibrationalvoyages/vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml”. The error is: “The feed could not be loaded because the content is not in a known feed format.”
My little ASUS (with a Linux operating system) gets a screen that says "The requested URL was not found". The URL on that page is http://vibrationalvoyages./vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml
On both error messages, the URL I was checking was:
    http://www.vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_and_Applications/Divine_Light_Vibrations_Principles_ andApplications.html
The last URL was, of course, the URL generated by iWeb.
    So, my question still is:
HOW CAN I GET MY FEEDS TO WORK PROPERLY? If the problem is there shouldn't be an http:// after feed: then, how do I get iWeb to set it up properly?
    Any ideas?
    GG

If the server was sending UTF-8 what would this character appear as?
You can see this for yourself by going to View > Text Encoding in your browser and setting it to UTF-8.  The characters will disappear.  They normally represent non-break spaces.   When the page is sent (or read) in Latin-1 encoding instead of UTF-8, they appear as Latin characters instead of empty space.
The different results of PageSpinner are probably because it is using some other encoding like MacRoman.
If you plug the url into this site it shows the encoding being sent by the server.

  • Blue background by picture on iweb page when online

    Hello,
When i uploud pictures on my website they have a bleu background.
And i have make the backgrounds transparant in photoshop.
Can anybody tell my thats posible..
    thanx, remco

That's how iWeb does its thing. Your background file is only 32KB so it loaded very fast, nearly instantaneously, when I visited each page.
There is a way to edit each page after publishing and so as to have it to point to the same jpg file. But that file still would have to be loaded on each new page the first time. And you'd have to do the post editing all over each time you edited one of the pages. It wouldn't be worth the extra effort.

  • Symbol on iWeb page after publishing

Hello - I hope someone can help - I'm very new to iWeb ...  After updating a page  - the following image appears on the published site - but I can't see it on the page before publishing ?

Whatever browser you use, if an image is missing, then it will be missing with all browsers.
    Anyway, this is missing :
    http://jimmyhogarth.com/Jimmy_Hogarth/kid_gloves_files/bg.jpg
Should probably be this one :
    http://jimmyhogarth.com/Jimmy_Hogarth/Home_files/bg.jpg
And a shape is missing :
    http://jimmyhogarth.com/Jimmy_Hogarth/kid_gloves_files/shapeimage_3.jpg
So check for their presence on the server.
Not much one can do in this forum.

  • Why will Safari not play MP3s embedded in my iWeb pages when Firefox can?

One would have thought that if iWeb was going to get picky over the scenarios in which it would behave correctly, it would favour Apple-centric enviroments. But this doesn't appear to be the case when building an iWeb site with embedded MP3 files.
The published site behaves perfectly when viewed in Firefox and yes, even IE's latest incarnation. Files may take a while to download but they play when the download has finished. Safari is a different story. The MP3 files embedded in some pages simply will not play when viewed with Safari.
This page in particular has never worked in Safari -
    http://www.whisperycat.co.uk/version_5/sounds/Entries/2011/3/23_Promenade.html
A small blue questionmark appears instead of the 'Play' button.
Any workarounds or is it just the case that Safari and iWeb are incompatible on this fundamental point???

Well it looks as though I answered my own question. A Google search revelas that Safari has had over 2 years' history of reported problems with the mp3 format -
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=safari+wont+play+mp3&ie=UT F-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=nkulT9_wA82g8gOPj8ntBA
    - and the solution is... STOP USING MP3 FILES
Yes, mp3 format is out, mp4 format is in. SO I'll need to upload MP4 versions of my audio files and then retry.

  • IWeb crashes when publish to folder.

    Hi,
I'm having some difficulties with iWeb when I try to publish my site to a folder. My site contains among other pages, one that is quite large (a lot of text in mulitple textboxes).
When I tell iWeb to publish to a folder (since I do not have .Mac) it starts thinking and when it's finished publishing the large file it crashes.
I'm not sure wheter the problem is the large file or something else, problem is the crashing. Have not been able to publish my site!!! Realy anoying.
    Hopefully somebody got some suggestions.
    Thanx Mark

might be interesting to copy the "domain" file so you can restore it, delete the suspect page and try to publish that. You can copy the orginal file back if needed.
Good idea to backup that file once in a while anyway.

  • Muse failing dropping pages when published

I have noticed that Muse is failing to publish all pages in my site. I had to call BC support thinking it was there end because the web pages was not available on the server when I checked my pages. All my setting was intact and accurate, I checked these pages to be exported from the site plan. I had to use ftp client to publish the missing pages.

Did you try selecting "All Files" in the "Options" panel of the "Publish" dialog?
If any manual changes are made to the files/folders published via the Muse Publish feature, Muse will be unaware of those changes. If you use an FTP client application to alter files hosted on BC, there's a good chance you'll need to select "All Files" in the Muse "Publish" dialog "Options" section in order to get Muse back in sync with what's on the published site.

  • Can you link URLs within pages when publishing a magazine using PDF file and the script create_indd.jsx?

This magazine is just a simple PDF replica of our print magazine but I want to the URLs linked when I am viewing it on the iPad and Android devices. Is this possible?

So I just checked. All that script does is place PDFs into InDesign files. InDesign treats PDFs as static artwork so my answer stands.
You’ll have to open the individual InDesign files and add the hyperlinks.

  • How can I centre the page when publishing?

    Hello,
How can I avoid a big gap on top during preview the site? Or how can I centre the entire page to the screen precisely?

Make sure your Top padding is set to '0' in your site properties dialogue box. (File/Site Properties)
Also make sure the check mark is on to Center your site horizontally.

  • Does iWeb blogging (comments, etc.) only work when published to .Mac?

The subject says it all, but I was wondering how well the blog features of iWeb work when publishing to a non-.Mac host.
Right now I use WordPress for my blog. Is iWeb's blog feature a reasonable alternative?

The iWeb features which are .Mac only are: Direct one-step uploading, Password protection, Hit counter, Slideshow with viewing controls, and Blog Comments/Searching.
