Strangeness when ITunes closes

Whenever I close ITunes prior to shutting down my computer, the following always happens:
1) ITunes shuts down. Bye-bye, Itunes.
2) When Windows starts shutting down, I get dialog box with a countdown bar, saying "Windows is shutting down this program. To end this program immediately and lose any saved material, press 'End.'" (There are two buttons: "End Now" and "Cancel.") The header of this dialogue box is gibberish -- squares and code. (I assume this is the name of the program.) However, it has the Itunes icon on it.
3) If I press "End Now," the computer shuts down. If I wait for the countdown bar to complete, I get a message saying the "ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down," with the Send/Don't send a report to Microsoft buttons. Now bear in mind Itunes already shut down!
BTW, if I wait more than 5-10 minutes after shutting down Itunes before shutting down Windows, there are no problems.
Also, I just did a complete reinstall of Windows over the weekend, wiping my hard drive, and downloaded Itunes 6.01, and still have the problem. I had the problem with Itunes 4.x and 6.0 as well. Any ideas?

After closing iTunes, it takes a couple of minutes to look after some behind-the-scenes stuff before shutting down.
Although I don't have any documentation, if memory serves that behind-the-scenes stuff has much to do with maintaining the the iTunes Library files .
The only thing that strikes me as odd about your situation is that you have to wait "more than 5-10 minutes" as opposed to the 1 or 2 minutes I would expect.
Is it possible it just seems to be 5-10 minutes and is actually closer to 1-2? Time can be subjective when sitting in front of a computer waiting for it to do something.
Those are my thoughts. Maybe someone else will have something else to add.

iTunes works and runs fine on my Vista Ultimate system, however, every time I close iTunes I get a message stating that iTunes has stopped working. I havn't noticed any functionality loss, it's just that the dialog box is annoying. I just did a recent clean install of my Vista OS. Was the same way on last two versions of iTunes. Ran and installed Windows updates, reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime. Created and additional user and same message for that user.
Running Norton 360, Ghost 12, Logitech 518 mouse G15 Keyboard, and software is Nero 7 ultra, Pinnacle Studio 11, PowerDVD 7, Call of Duty: UO.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
I experience a similar issue.
iTunes runs fine, and I can sync my nano as I did on XP.
When I listen to music through my Airtunes device, music streams just fine,
but when I close iTunes, I get the "Stopped working"-message.
If I change back so I listen on the computer instead, and then close iTunes, everything closes just fine without the error.
The error is reported as follows in Event Viewer:
Faulting application iTunes.exe, version 7.4.3.1, time stamp 0x46f9e539, faulting module iTunes.exe, version 7.4.3.1, time stamp 0x46f9e539, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x001227ac, process id 0x1348, application start time 0x01c80b73fd90b27c.
Do you also use AirTunes when you get the error?

Why does itunes and other media continue to play when i close the lid on my macbook pro 2011???

Hey, I am new to mac and still getting used to it (making the transition from windows), its amazing! Anyhow, I cannot figure out why my itunes and other media like youtube or a film on vlc player continues to play once the lid has been closed. I thought that when i close the lid the macbook should then sleep. It does everytime when there is nothing playing. The little white light on the bottom right hand corner of the book is on but music continues to play.
The sleep option always works. If I press the power button and choose the option sleep it does so etcc.
Is this normal and am I just being stupid or is there a problem??
I bought the laptop from ebay, its a macbook pro late 2011 17inch. I dont have apple support and might have to make a trip into London to the mac store however I was hoping someone can help me...

hey, thanks for the reply. I don't know to be perfectly honest. When I close the lid without any music playing it sleeps fine. How could I check?
So basically I pressed the power button and pressed sleep. The laptop turned off and the little white light turned on no problem. I did the same thing with closing the lid and it went to sleep no problem. (Can you confirm that when the little white light is on it means the laptop is sleeping)??.
I then had itunes playing and pressed the power button and when i pressed sleep the music paused then 6 seconds later it went to sleep. I then had itunes playing and closed the lid and the music kept on playing even though the white light was on.
What do you think jessejarvi?

Thanks for the info, anyway i just tried all of the options it gave me and its no good. It seems to be only in my account, since I could sync it in my sisters account. i dont know much about computers but I think this happened to me before.
as I said i hardly know computers. i think I unplugged the hard drive all cables and i turned the computer off too. plug it all again and see if it grabs it again. i did it and it worked. some how the extHD gets stuck on on. so thats why I unplugged it all. I dont know if you want to try that.

Hi turingtest2 (you pass, BTW): Thanks for the speedy reply. MobileMe doesn't appear in the list of programs which can be uninstalled. I tried the link you suggest: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall but when I tried to "Run Now", I get the error message: " Troubleshooting cannot continue because an error has occurred... etc.... [code 80072F8F]" So googled this error & found a tool called (80072f8f) Repair Tool - I'm leery to download yet more stuff from non-microsoft sites -- any recommendations?

What happens when you try to open it?

I have now transfered my files of ripped CD's to my iTunes library three times. On each occassion, the conversion seems to occur fine, the files play, but when I close my computer and return the next day, iTunes says it cannot locate any of those files.

Repair security permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7/8 shouldn't be too different.
Repeat for the media folder if it isn't a subfolder of the iTunes folder.

When I close itunes on my pc I cant reopen it

When I first turn on my pc (windows vista 32bit) and open iTunes it plays fine, however when I close iTunes and then try to reopen it nothing happens. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times but nothing changes. Please Help

I had this same problem and my sixteen year old figured it out. Since the Windows PC running iTunes (which supports a housefull of AppleTVs) was running in a closet, he suspected it was due to having no speakers attached.
Sure enough, when I went into control panel to look at my sound settings, I noticed something I had missed previously. There was a red mark on the device. I took his advice and plugged in some earphones to the speaker jack and, wallah, the red mark turned green and the iTunes warning never popped up again.

Videos are downloading as a "stream" and when i close itunes, i lose them

Everytime i download a video, have spen well over 6 bucks so far, they will download completly, but they only STREAM, and when i close itunes, my video is gone forever. . .
i have tried seraching my computer for m4v files, and i have none =/

I think i have the same issue.. After i download a video it just stalls on me so i close it.. Then i reopen it and it vanished.. So then i went under Advance. then Check for Purchases and then i was in that processing part then after it was done an erro came up and said it had to clos... After that it was no where to be found... So im in the same boat

In Windows 7 Itunes loads and runs fine. When I close it down and try to get back in it just sits there. It won't work until I reboot the computer.

Let's see whether this file APSDaemon.exe is the problem here.
Close your iTunes.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del key and choose Task Manager. In the "Processes" Tab, select the file APSDaemon.exe and click End Prosses button, then close the task manager window.
Now open itunes and see if it is working?
If that works, make sure you do this below to prevent same problem after restarting windows:
Go to. START button, type in
MSCONFIG
Hit ENTER
Click STARTUP Tab, Uncheck "Apple Push", click OK.
Restart Windows.

I ran into the same problem, I think that, If you tab on a song that is on your IPOD, and the song data is grayed-out, I think it means that the song is probably twice on your IPOD and that the iTunes directory can not edit THAT song data for two (or more) files @once. Check if this is the case, sinceI have the same problem,am looking for a way to have One and the same song in more playlists but only keep the song once on the IPOD.
