Strangest thing about FireWire and boot

Some days ago, I bought a new MBP. After installing a fresh copy of Mac OSX Snow Leopard and restoring my backup with Time Machine, everyting seemed right: Facebook recognized a new computer ID and asked me which new name I wanted to use, iTunes made a new scan of the library and so on.
The most important thing, perhaps, was that REFIT was NOT installed nor restored by Time Machine. In fact, as I had asked in this forum (and was succesfully answered), Time Machine does NOT hold the startup.
What's the matter?
I use an external FireWire audio interface (M-Audio FireWire 410) that has to be connected BEFORE turning the MBP on, otherwise it won't work.
So, after restoring with Time Machine and setting up my new MBP, I turned it off, connected the FW audio interface and turned it on.
*** ?!?!? After a couple of seconds, REFIT appeared. Moreover, after the boot was complete, AirPort was off.
This was COMPLETELY EQUAL to the last configuration I had left before turning the FW410 off --> in the OLD MacBook Pro!
I really can't realize WHY a FireWire audio interface is holding something about the boot.
Moreover, another strange thing is that during the next boot (with the FW410 disconnected), REFIT and the same configuration were the same. I repeat, even if the audio interface was not connected.
Can you help and tell me why is this happening?
Thanks in advance!

I mean: 1) Format the hard drive, 2) Reinstall OS X, 3) Reboot, 4) Go on as soon as "Do you want to transfer your data?" "Yes --> from another Mac".
That will work but note the following:
It is Setup Assistant that will appear automatically with the "Do you want to transfer your data?" prompt. It is essentially the same thing as Migration Assistant, except it can only be used once & for this reason you should use it with whichever has most of your user files, your current Time Machine backup or your old MBP. You will then need to manually copy the remaining user files (if there are any) from the other source to the new Mac. This is because Migration Assistant (which you can run more than once) cannot merge two user accounts into one.
This Time Machine option in Setup Assistant is not the same as a Time Machine restore.
Both Setup & Migration Assistant will only work with sources that have a system on them. Neither will work with your new data backup but if required you can manually transfer user files from the backup with Finder.
As you probably already know by now, ReFit & any other partitions it allows you to create will be destroyed if you format the drive. If all of that is working OK now, you do not need to reformat the drive. Just reinstall Snow Leopard as the article describes, or just erase the Snow Leopard partition & otherwise do what you suggest.

  • What’s the strangest thing about the Java platform?

    Hello All,
In an interview (http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Interviews/bloch_effective_08_qa.html) that I did with Joshua Bloch on java.sun.com, promoting the revised version of “Effective Java”, he discusses generics, enums, annotations, the under-use of Java libraries, the importance of minimizing the accessibility of classes and members and minimizing mutability, and other matters.
To my question: “What’s the strangest thing about the Java platform?” his answer was: “I'm going to say that the strangest thing about the Java platform is that the byte type is signed. I've never heard an explanation for this. It's quite counterintuitive and causes all sorts of errors.”

  • IPod Touch question about  Firewire and USB cable

I just bought a USB 2.0 extension cable on ebay to charge my 64 GB iPod Touch. I also bought a USB wall socket that I was going to plug the extension cord in to (I haven't received the wall socket yet). Come to find out when testing the extension cord on my laptop I get the message " charging is not supported with this accessory". I thought that was the case only with firewire cables. But this is supposed to be USB 2.0 What's the deal? Can a firewire cable look like a regular USB cable? And does anyone have a work around that I can use?

I realized yesterday that I had another USB wall jack which I use at work to charge my IPT. I took it home with me plugged it into the wall and tried to charge the IPT without the USB extension cord, and it worked fine. When I connected the USB extension cord, I got the same message, "Charging is not supported with this accessory." I'm so frustrated. Mainly because I don't understand what is causing this issue and therefore don't know how to remedy it. I would buy another extension cord, but I don't know if that one will work either.

Hello. I've read some threads but I can't understand a thing about applets and SSL.
I've a signed applet. This applets is embedded with applet tag in a jsp page.
The applet works as a file uploader.
With signing, the applet can access to the user file system without problem, open a connection with the server and upload files.
Now, If I want to use HttpsUrlConnection instead of the standard http connection, what certificate does the applet use for handshake? Does the applet automatically use the same certificate used for signing?
    Thank you

The system doesn’t recognize or capitalize the word (I) or the first word of every sentence. Another really annoying thing about the integrated mail on your Mac computers is the fact that the system learns the word as you type it more and more instead of highlighting it as incorrectly is this is a word that’s being misspelled. Can Apple fix this bug to make it user friendly as if you were using Office or a Word Document?

    You hit the target CT.
It’s only fair that if Apple is going to integrate Mail into Mac PCs, it would be nice if the system does it for you like Office or perhaps Outlook. I just don’t to use Outlook although I have it installed and ready to use, but instead use Mail which comes with Mac OS already.
I hope to make some sense here.

Are there ANY compatibility issues with Itunes 12.0.1 and Mavericks?  Don't want to download Yosemite.  Not hearing good things about it.  I'm on Mavericks 10.9.5.

one obstacle, quickly removed. thank you.
nomenclature aside for a moment, 10.6.8 is correct but maybe more is necessary about the MacBook Pro: it is 'old': Identifier: 1.2, Intel Core Duo, 2.16 GHz, 1 Processor, L2 2 MB, RAM 2 GB.
i hope that is enough to get an answer to this: is it unadvisable to update its OS; in other words, if i update to 10.9, will the machine be able to handle it, 'speedwise'?

All you can do is call the service provider that phone was being used with to cancel the phone account at least.
However, if you did not have a passcode lock on it, then the person with it has access to everything on it.  You should immediately change all your email account passwords, and any other online account's passwords you used or had set up on the phone.
There is nothing you can do remotely to the phone now, and even cancelling the phone service account will not stop someone from using your emails and such on wifi.  Changing your account passwords will lock them out of your accounts.

I currently have Snow Leopard and am thinking of upgrading to Lion but have heard some bad things about it.  Should I upgrade or not? What do you like/dislike about Lion?

It is indeed all down to what you need to do with your machine.   Snow leopard is an excellent OS and as Baltwo suggests you have to check out your current apps and programs because PPC won't work on any higher OS than the one you have.
Andy's comment is very interesting and, I suspect, insider knowledge based     Certainly I would wait for Mavericks now it is on the horizon ... and then add six months or so for the bugs to be ironed out.
Good luck, whatever you do.   I'm staying with Snow Leopard.

  • Is the worst thing about iphone it's ringtunes, and how do I fix???

    Hello there,
Unfortunately I am now within hour 15, in my attempts to replace Apples purposefully terrible ringtones with new ones, and I've bought a few now... However none of them work.. they aren't even recognised on itunes as ringtones. I bouhgt on my phone and on my pc and have imported, exported, synched, and read all of the information, attempted to edit 30 seconds and all that stuff, except my library will not pass them to the ringtones section, nor does it have the bell thingy or will it let me creat ringtone... The whole itunes thing is glitchy and has hijacked my music collection...
I am enfuriated by Apples attempt to force us into buying these awful things, as their selection is also dismal... Sod Apple, i'm off to windows... But before I do... how am I supposed to fix this thing... cos right now i'm considering sueing...

Did you buy the song, +and then+ buy the ringtone? Buy a song with a bell symbol in the Store. Then, go to your Music library (click on Music at the top of the list in the left, or on the Purchased playlist), find the song, click the bell icon, select your fragment of song, then click Buy. Yes, you must pay twice, once for the song, again for the Ringtone. That's how purchased ringtones work. Then, they show up in the Ringtones tab in iTunes and can be synced to the phone and selected in the Sounds settings or for specific contacts.
Or, make your own ringtones, for free.
EDIT: Just noticed you're in the UK - the record labels have basically prevented Apple from selling ringtones outside the US. So, don't bother trying to buy them via the iTunes Store - just use the link I provided, or any of the many 3rd party apps that will do the job (consult Google as Tamara suggests).

  • Windows Keboard and Booting Problem (on a Mac laptop)

Hi, I've been putting up with a really strange (and annoying) problem that my laptop has been going through. I have a Santa Rosa MacBook Pro with OS Leopard, and I put on a Windows XP Pro (with Service Pack 2) NTFS partition. It used to work fast at first--especially booting up and logging on. I have noticed that now when I log onto Windows (no other user accounts , just mine) the wallpaper, desktop, desktop icons, start bar, all load. But when I click on My Computer it takes a good minute and a half for all the components to be displayed (like C drive , the CD drive, Shared Documents). I only have one partition which is C drive. But for a minute and a half, the flashlight icon keeps moving back and forth. Even if I click on any icon, the cursor will turn into a sandtimer but no programs will open once all the drives show up in the My Computer window.
My initial theory was that maybe it's searching for My Documents which I shifted to one of my external harddrives. But that doesn;t seem to be it. When I log off and log back in, it loads much faster. I can open programs in 2 seconds. Also, I realized that the Apple keyboard features (which is controlling volume and brightness) works only then. If I had to boot up Windows, not only does it take long to load (although shutting down is pretty quick), the brightness and volume keys don't work. I have to set it manually through Control Panel. So now if I have to open up Windows, the ritual is that I sit around for a minute and a half (which is a very long time if u think about it) and just when it's working I force myself to log off (so the volume and brightness keys work once I log back on)
I suppose it's worth mentioning that I had downloaded this "skin" which makes XP look like Vista, but I uninstalled it now although not completely since it needed the Service Pack 2 CD which I don't have at the moment (I'm on vacation) . I would think that could be the problem, but then why does simply logging off and on make Windows work like a charm? Is it an update glitch? Has anyone had this problem before? Could somebody please help me since I'm really tired of waiting around or this stupid thing to load (not to mention hearing myself come up with stupid theories). This has been going on for 4 and half months now. Come to think of it it's been a while since I received any Bootcamp updates from Apple (unless they just haven't released any that could fix such a problem)
Just in case my specs are-- 2.4 GhZ, OS 10.5, nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, 15 inch display, 250 GB (of which 30 GB is for Windows).
I'll be waiting for any answers/suggestions/tips/solutions. Thanks so much in advance =)
