Strangfe behaviour of Mac Pro

I will try to be as cklear as possible:
I use my Mac Pro mostly for video editing.
I open the program and work on the clips, export and the clip goes in an export bin and one-by-one will be transcoded.
Since recently, when I have - lets say about 8-10 clips in the bin, whenever I click on a new clip, the spinning wheel takes a very long time to stop so I can continue.
Even after the export bin is empty and all clips heve been transcoded, when I click on a new clip, the spinning takes still a long long time.
I might understand, if the CPU has to work full power, it can not accept more, but when the job is done (even the activity monitor shows very little activity, the wheel still spins.
I am having 16 GB of RAM and that should be enough for my transcoding.
Usually, when I turn off and let it cool down for a while, it works normal again.
Dorian.

Almost any graphic card from the POS OEM ATI 2600XT and up (hopefully you upgraded the graphic card once or twice since).
Install a new clean OS to another drive and pull what you have for now and get it up and running.
Get out OEM DVD with all the drives pullled and hold 'd' on startup to run Apple Hardware Test
Clean the dust. Inspect the fans and the rest. FBDIMMs attract dust which reduces their ability to cool. The PSU can get clogged. Pets, carpets and dust and being on floor or carpet or where airflow is restricted?
All the things to put on check list (or two!)

  • My Mac Pro (early 2008) has odd behaviour with 8800gt

    Hello Apple community,
First of all, thank you for your support and sorry if I can't explain the situation correctly. I will be concrete.
I bought a Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008) 2 weeks after its launch with Nvidia Geforce 8800gt 512mb. It works awesome.
Each five-six months I open it and remove all the dust I can carefully. I am used to do it and I do not touch anything fragile.
The problem is that the screen flashes and then gets frozen everytime the Mac has to use hardware for graphics. When this happens, there are many dots and strypes moving arround with green and pink spots.
    I made both picture and video: http://www.cl.ly/7dGD(pic)    - http://www.cl.ly/7d4U(video)
This happens in every place the Mac uses the graphic card (both browsers showing a youtube video, vimeo, etc... and time machine, which uses graphics for the background), everything get frozen but the sound doesn't until 1 or 2 minutes. When this happens, the only solution is to force shut down (press and holding the power button 5 secs).
The only hope I had was formatting. I thought I had something in my Mac user which could make this happen. So I formatted the Mac Pro last night. A clean install. Everything updated... but the error persists.
    So...
    - I thought the problem was Flash, but it doesn't. The solution I have for playing videos in browser is disabling the hardware option for Flash.
    - I also thought the problem was the capture card but it doesn't because I tried everything without the card installed.
    - I have formatted and the problem persists.
Something is wrong but I don't know what. I am now in the Mac and everythin works great. But the risk exists the moment I am playing a video, editing a video, in Time Machine, playing a game, and so on...
When this happens and the Mac restarts, it shows this info:

    Thank you for your help

    Try this:
clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current.  Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old.  Might want ATI 5870 or 5770.

  • WORKAROUND! - Sluggish Motion V 4.0.1 on Mac Pro Nehalem 2.97 GHz 16 Vcore

Hi guys, like several people on this forum and others I been very frustrated with the performance of both Motion.app version 3 and now Motion.app V4 .0 .1 (latest update) on my 2009 Mac pro Nehalem 2.97 GHz 16 Vcore 12GB with the ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card.
I have two workarounds that may be of assistance in relieving this issue. They work for me however before I discuss what they I'd like to set the scene.
Like many of us, I have trawled this forum and many others including COW and so on mostly relying on those 10-12 (the dozen or so) excellent tips from people like Mark Spencer and others. This includes the usual things like turning off rendering options that make heavy use of CPU/GPU etc.
Caveat: I'd also like to note here that this performance sluggishness has absolutely nothing to do (and is completely unrelated to) I/O performance nor is it related to memory usage. The reason I say this is because during some testing and the normal practice I keep all a Motion.app cache files (autosave, cached files etc) out on a very fast PROAVIO EB8NS disk array with ATTO R380 HBA onto SAS paths where this box is capable of over 450 MB per second measured with Kona system test tool. Additionally I have 12 GB of memory on this Mac pro which I assigned 70% of it to be available to Motion.app V4. The sluggishness Motion.app V4 is not manifest itself through the usual items such as excessive virtual memory page in/out or swap in/out activity. In fact in this scenario I describe below in my system when nothing else is running the former is non-existent! Additionally I also want to know that Motion.app V4 in my scenario/situation/environment is definitely and certainly NOT impacted by insufficient I/O bandwidth..
However, like many people, who have the same or similar setup to myself, we experience severe delays the most basic Motion.app UI such as: selecting an item, scrubbing through the timeline, performing any kind of transform etc etc. Many of us trying to diagnose this problem (looking for any kind of diagnostics or messages etc) have noticed that with the exception of one single core, the remaining cores to do very little (idle or just barely moving) whilst the remaining single core is taking out at 100% constantly.
Many months ago whilst really bogged down with this problem trying to complete a project, I contacted Mark Spencer who politely explained that notion exploits the on-board graphics card (in my case the ATI Radeon HD 4870). After frustratingly trying to improve the performance of this and completely reinstalling Final Cut Suite in a different brand-new (at the time MacOS X 10.5.6), I found that there was little difference.
I am mentioning all this because, I know that a few colleagues have had a similar problem and have not found any satisfaction in looking at this despite many well-informed forum users who offer excellent advice.
At my wits end (currently), I took a few days to try and isolate what the problems may be caused by (what exacerbates this severely degraded performance). This user interface sludgy degradation is manifested through the UI also has the (spinning beach ball).
I isolated pieces in some of the Motion.app projects and started to ISOLATE (Control-I) what I thought were quite complex layers and individual objects but to no avail. I then resorted to completely deleting them with some improvement in performance (noticeably less sluggyness) however it still was not lightning fast as I expected considering it I was in draft mode, 720 p resolution, with lighting, shadows and reflections completely turned off in the view.
*Motion.app BEHAVIOURS*: after some hours and a great deal of trial and error (non-productive work time I might add) it occurred to me that some of the Motion.app behaviours in particular place in the layer with as few as five objects in the layer (behaviours such as "Motion.app path", "wriggle", "oscillate" and even good old trusted "throw" seem to be the culprits in this particular layer.
I will note well here at this point, but of course "camera layers" does seem to be affected at all with the basic movements such as Dolly, frame, sweep etc. I have some sets up to 4 or five cameras which seems not to bother Motion.app at all!
*OBJECT SELECTION (S):* yes this also seems to have some degrading impact on playout, scrubbing and so on. Interesting I thought.
Workarounds: here are a few things that I know that work to get around some problems of working where Motion.app is extremely SLUGGY in the user interface (UI). Perhaps someone has already noted these on a forum or posted on however I couldn't find them.
So my workflow/practice here is to do the following when I'm manipulating objects (placement, set up, applying filters, adjusting timeline, and so on):
+WORKAROUND #1+: *DISABLE the behaviours* in the layers where you are performing any object manipulation. In fact we have many objects in many layers where the topmost layer (a group of nested layers) contains any behaviours, I would suggest you disable those whilst you work on that particular layer.
It's a very simple stylus click to enable the BEHAVIOURS layers that you have been working on to see what the effect of those behaviours when you want to play them out in the player/canvas.
I have no idea why such trivial behaviours cause my very expensive Mac pro to nearly lock up whilst in Motion.app version 4 and also version 3. Anyway is definitely works on me.
+WORKAROUND #2+: *DESELECT ANY ITEM IN THE CANVAS* (in any view) when attempting to play out whilst in the canvas. Again I don't know why having one or more items (including the camera) insert would have such a drastic impact on the performance of Motion.app to play out what I think is a frivolous range, however this really works for me.
*How to measure the performance or how to monitor the performance/usage of the ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card from MacOS X?* I would like to know exactly what this is doing on my system when one of the CPU cores is pegged out in 100% servicing requests from Motion.app. I can't find utility (which am willing to pay for) that sees the ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card. One I thought would have is an application called atMonitor.app (http://www.atpurpose.com/atMonitor/) which seems to do a pretty good job on my uni body MacBook Pro and wife's Macbook Air.
It would seem that any of the utilities don't seem to see the ATI Radeon HD 4870 or if they do and they initiate commands to it that the ATI Radeon HD 4870 and doesn't respond or send any replies status information. (Beats me I'm not a technical person these days)
Summary: I would be very interested if other people who have a similar if not pretty near exact setup as myself have found these two suggestions useful. I have tried some of these Motion.app projects on my MacBook Pro uni-body and with some difference the MacBook Pro exhibits similar sluggyness to this Mac pro.

Mark, I took your advice and reinstall Final Cut Suite Version 3 (including Motion.app version 4.0.1) onto a completely different and I'm used file system including a brand-new install of MacOS X snow leopard 10.6.1, which I believe is the most recent update.
To be clear, I have all the latest Pro Applications updates as well apply to this brand-new system.
So here is the *bad new*s.
*Using exactly the same hardware configuration as I described in this theme of woe, I launched Motion.app V4 .0 .1 and opened up several of the projects that I'm having trouble with that is issued.*
Simply, the symptoms and observation I described in this thread exists with a brand-new installation.
Anyway looks like I have a backup/another instance available Final Cut Pro in case my main production image has trouble.
Once again, as I described initially in this thread, I used the two workarounds to overcome the consistent and overwhelmingly an exaggerated 20 seconds lag on average interactions with Motion.app with the success that I'd described previously.
In another thread back in September 2009, a forum poster mentioned that he felt that the camera framing behaviours were the root of this problem. And to this end he advised converting these behaviours to keyframes using the command-K ("convert to keyframes") to overcome his misery.
This indeed does work very well. So this is the third workaround and I'm starting to use.
Further I have done some more hard comparisons with my 2009 MacBook pro uni-body 2.93 GHz with a standard arrangement of 4 MB of memory and the usual disk internally. *To my great surprise*, I found that the projects that I'm having a lot of trouble with were much more responsive not only with the camera framing behaviours (which I'm not particularly having any trouble with), but the layers that contains a simple transform behaviours such as "motion path", "wiggle", and so on did not seem to bother the Mac book pro.
I watched the CPU cores on the Mac book pro maybe go to 80% while the project was loading, and also whilst I gingerly navigated through the project although feeling a little sluggy was far less in orders of 10 to 20 seconds faster than this Mac pro Nehalem with all the bells and whistles on my earnings embedded within it.
Now I'm starting to wonder, as Andy pointed out, +maybe there is some trouble with the hardware in this system+. I really could not know how to determine if this is the case. However before I draw this conclusion finally, I noticed that there are a lot more people out there with the same consideration as I have that have this same problem. It's not narrowed down to those owners with the ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, however these seem to be the bulk of the people who are trying to do things that are getting a fair amount of forum time (like me).
There certainly seems to be something of an issue as there are some symptom dumps for Motion.app but only one or 2 to over this period that seemed to be triggered by something on this machine. And like many on this forum I gave up reading dumps for a living back in the 1990s.
I would really like to know how I can diagnose this problem before I had to pack this Mac pro up and carted back to the local Apple care centre here in Hong Kong (which means I won't have it forever while, which means no income). Yes I can use my Mac book pro uni-body which is I might end up doing.
_Oh, and this little gem._ I find that if I invoke the "timeline pane/window" (command-7), that it can take up to 2 seconds to refresh the screen. It is amazingly slow and feel like there is definitely something wrong.
If I have a simple motion project by that I mean some simple plates some moving text and no real 3-D except for one little camera Motion.app V 4 seems to work quite okay.
The sets that I'm working in at about eight or nine cameras over the timeline and maybe three or four sets in the project. This is not the work I think especially when most of the moving here is a few objects wobbling around in 3-D space and quick camera moves using the camera framing behaviour.
In summary, having spent what seems to be 40 or 50 hours messing with this issue are not doing anything productive, I've come to the conclusion that there is definitely something wrong with this setup that I have. However having had no problem with that up until now (I know actually I had some problems back in May 2009 with it but it seemed that install a Final Cut Suite version 2 completely fixed it.
And I am totally surprised that my Mac book pro uni-body if pressed can do the job that I want.
Therefore Motion Forum users, I really don't know what else there is to do other than to poke around over time and eventually something will fix this because it is really very frustrating and like many of us on this forum I did endeavour to pay for/put capital funds into a system highly recommended by many that uses Apple production applications than I expected it would work.
By the way, I noticed when I use Nuke version 5 and Shake V 4.1 and even Maya PE, I don't have these issues but will concede that I doubt whether the use applications take advantage directly of the GPU arrangement in the graphics card like Motion.app does.
    That's all I have.
Any other thoughts are most welcome.

  • When I shut down the Mac Pro, it restarts

Has anyone run into this issue with their Mac Pro? When I shut down the computer (either via the Ctrl + Option + Cmd + Eject or the Shut Down command from the Apple menu drop down), the Mac Pro will simply restart and take me back to my log-in screen.
At this point, I can hit the shut down button on the login window and it will shutdown, but this is annoying, a waste of time, and unnecessary.
I have tried performing an SMC reset, but it has not resolved this issue.
    Specs: Mac Pro (2010)
    3.33 GHz 6-Core
    (2) 2TB Internal HDD
    12GB ram
    ATI 5870 graphics card (1GB)

I have noticed the exact same behaviour. It only happens when I have something plugged into one of the front USB ports (example : external HD, USB key)
Apparently the system crashes during the shut down process, and then reboots.
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a solution

  • Disk utility reports "Device could not be opened" - error when trying to format a new drive in a Mac Pro 1,1

    MacPro 1,1 Quadcore 3 GHz (2006 "Woodcrest")
    32 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    OS X 10.7.5 Lion
I have encountered the following behavior when trying to format a new drive with disk utility. This description has also been send via the Mac Pro feedback as a bug report to Apple.
On searching the web and forums with this particular error message and behaviour I could not find any usful results. So maybe the following description may be helpful for some users.
    Best regards.
    1. Drive Bay 1 contains the original 250 GB Startupdisk. It works without errors.
    2. Drive Bays 3 and 4 contain each a WD Caviar Black 2 TB SATA 3 HDD. They work without errors.
    3. I have purchased a third WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    4. In Drive Bay 2 there has been a Seagate 750 GB HDD, which worked in conjunction with all the other drives without error.
    5. I exchanged the Seagate HDD in Drive Bay 2 with the new WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    6. On starting the system, it will report to initialize the new drive.
    7. On trying to initialize the new drive with disk utility it reports the error [translated from German] "Erasing of the volume has failed. The device could not be opened."
    8. I thought that the drive is faulty. Thus I created an RMA-Case at WD. They exchanged the drive without problems.
    9. On getting the exchanged WD Caviar Black 2 TB drive I put it in Drive Bay 2 as before.
    10. On trying to erase and format the exchange drive I got the same error message "Drive could not be opened."
10.1 On selecting the physical drive in the devices list, disk utility reports all information in the bottom area of its window as usual, e. g. hard disk description, connection bus, type and place, capacity, write status, SMART-status, partition scheme.
10.1 On leaving that drive selected in the devices list and clicking the info-button, disk utility will also report additional information as usual, e. g. Name, Type, partition scheme, media-identification, media name, media type, device tree, … , number of relocated sectors, etc.. All this information appears to be valid, as can be compared to the other devices information inside the other Drive Bays. Also the disk numbering scheme appears to be standard - 4 HDDs give the numbering disk0, disk1, disk2, disk3.
10.2 From that information I conclude that the SATA-bus and connectors electrically work properly, the drive has spun up and can be accessed by the system normally.
    11. I powered down the computer, took out the HDDs from Drive Bays 3 and 4 and put the caddy with the new exchange drive in Drive Bay 4 [Maybe, I could have also just left it alone in Drive Bay 2, or 3].
    12. After powering on the system, disk utility will quick format the exchange drive without any error message. Also, when erasing again by selecting the option to write zeros to the drive, disk utility will finish without error.
    13. After disk utility finished formatting, I put back the original drives into Drive Bay 3 and 4 and put the now newly formatted drive back into Drive Bay 2.
    14. After switching on the computer the system start and login proceeds without any error message. All drives appear as expected on the desktop.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Mac Pro crashes on boot, won't boot from install CD - help!

Hi - I've got a Mac Pro which will only boot in safe mode - it goes to grey screen before login under normal conditions, and has a kernel panic when told to boot from the install DVD. Please help!
For background: I've got a dual-core 2007 Mac Pro and a 2 core 2008 aluminium MacBook, both of which I've been backing up to their own external drives with Time Machine. I've just bought a NetGear ReadyNAS (2TB) to back them both up because I ran out of space on the Mac Pro's two internal 500GB drives - I've put in a new Samsung 1TB drive, which is the only hardware upgrade I've made to either machine. The MacBook backs up fine to the NAS over a wireless network, but the MacPro kept crashing the system while making its first attempts at backing up, both within Time Machine and when just copying the TM backup files across in Finder. It would hang about 10GB into backups of approx 1TB, as here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550 - but the NAS formatting works for the MacBook.
On advice from NetGear I put the following command into Terminal:
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
Now the Mac Pro won't boot except in safe mode - it won't boot from the install disc, either the 10.4.9 that came with the machine or the 10.6 disc I bought later. if I let the boot run as normal, it locks up on the grey screen (as here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570). If I boot with the install CD (holding down 'c') I get a kernel panic (as here - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html). If I hold down 'option' I can choose between the HD or the install CD, but each option just takes me to the same places as above. Safe boot works, but that's it.
I've done all the obvious things: I've unplugged all peripherals and network cables. The extended Apple Hardware Test shows no problems. I've repaired disk permissions and done a live verify on the startup drive in Disk Utility. I've reset the PRAM as well, but the behaviour is the same: It doesn't feel like a drive failure as I've managed to back up the startup drive while in safe mode and I don't hear any clicking or worrying drive noises. I don't know how I could wipe the startup drive and reinstall the OS because I can't boot from the install CD - or from a USB drive, as suggested here - http://osxdaily.com/2009/09/02/install-snow-leopard-from-external-firewire-or-us b-hard-drive-or-how-to-upgrade-to-106-without-a-dvd-drive/
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

  • Here is a 2 for one, On a Mac Pro 5,1 2.66ghz 6 core Xeon.

My mac pro is developing some strangeness, now when I go to start up the machine in morning it doesnt turn on until I have hit the power button 3 times, sometimes even this doesnt do the trick so I unplug it wait a couple sec and plug back in. So far its always actually started and I am happy for that as I am busy on 2 jobs right now and cannot afford this. Any ideas on what could be happening? This behaviour started probably 2 weeks ago. I have apple care and machine is only about 7 months old...
Second part I recently purchased a memory upgrade kit from Ramjet taking th e system from 12 to 24 gigs, the ram are 6 matched pairs of 4gb and according to the info I have found should be exactly what is needed. 1033mhz ddr3, anyway I istalled it last week during a short lull. after a week I have removed it and replaced my original 12 gigs as the computer was behaving very slowly and when I checked the  activity monitor the drive was doing crazy read write activity like i was rendering something or moving big geometry in 3D. This is with nothing but AM skype and safari running. anyway it gets better when I re install my oem ram the computer kept telling me 3 times in a row that I had not put the ram in correctly so I just moved teh chips around until it was happy.
Now when I check activity monitor with original ram I am back to disc activity around 1.4 gig read and 670mb write while its just sitting as oposed to 20+ gb with the ramjet memory.
It seems to be runnning fine now but I am really concerned that there is something fundamentally wrong with this machine now.
Any thoughts or assist greatly appreciated.

Ask Ramjet to take them back, test, and send a new set to test.
When you get new RAM, I actually recommend a quick test with Apple Hardware test at the least. There are also some memory test and performance uttilities worth running. Some run Geekbench (has memory bandwidth) as well as PRIME for OS X.
But you should  contact  Ramjet. Maybe have them take it back and get Crucial or Kingston (they really do make a difference).
Watch your system more closely, monitor temps as well as use AM.
Maybe your power cord is bad or the wall outlet, or if using a UPS maybe that is not adequate (900W unit?).

  • Mac Pro Possessed

I have a Dual 2.26 Quad-Core Mac Pro. It has 6 Gigs of factory RAM and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card and is running OS 10.5.8. The computer’s primary use is for editing on Final Cut Pro (v 7.0.2), but it does serve day-to-day purposes as well.
Everything that can go wrong with it has and endless attempts at fixes, at best, only temporarily fix the system. There have been so many issues and so many approaches to finding the cause(s) that I’m afraid this will be a pretty long posting and I’ll still forget some things. Please bear with me. If you like a challenge, I’m your man.
I got this Mac on 10/2/09. We (Any time I write ‘we,’ I am referring to a highly-qualified Mac technician who has done much of the heavy lifting throughout this process; I think he now wants to become a farmer) copied a lot of files from my previous G5 (running OS 10.4.11), but did a new clean install of Final Cut Suite and of any other apps. We also installed 3 1-TB Samsung HE103UJ internal drives in bays 2, 3 & 4 in a RAID using SoftRAID software v.3.6.8. Gorgeous. I’ve got the best computer in the world. Ha.
On 10/6, I launch and get a SoftRAID Disk Error message telling me that one of the RAIDed partitions encountered a read error. This message will continue from time to time throughout my trials, but, until the last few days, we’ve never detected any actual problems with these drives and no tests run on them could find any performance issues.
On 10/9 “Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the KGCore plug-in.” This seems to be a known problem (http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/976905), which will continue to pop up from time to time, but otherwise, things are running well.
11/17, I finish one job and take over an existing Final Cut project. There are 4.5 TB of media spread over six 1-TB drives (eventually this will grow to 7 drives) daisy-chained via short firewire 800 cables to my CPU. From this point on in the narrative, my internal drives will not be used for media at all. I will continue occasionally to get read error messages from SoftRAID, but I detect no actual problem and all three of those drives are sitting idle anyway.
Lot’s of technical problems start to occur now, but many of them have to do internally within the project (I would elaborate, but I’ve looked ahead and this sucker’s going to be long enough without side issues). One issue I do address is in early January, I add an additional card to my Mac to provide more firewire 800 ports. I now have six of the external drives each plugged into their own port and only one drive piggybacking on one of the others. I see no real improvement, but still, I attribute my crashes to FCP project issues.
Then in April I start crashing and freezing. All. The. Time. Endlessly. Throughout all of this, btw, I am regularly trashing permissions, caches and temporary files; repairing permissions; trashing FCP preferences; running Disk Utility and Disk Warrior and Compressor Repair (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/compressor_repair.htm). My tech finally suggests we clear the internal RAIDed drives so we can reformat them not as a RAID and then do a fresh install of the OS on one of them and install Final Cut there in its own little isolated world. On 4/22, we do all this. That drive (just to confuse things) is called ‘Final Cut.’ The only third-party drivers running from here on out are SoftRAID’s and Kensington Mouseworks.
I sometimes have to make several attempts to get FCP to launch, but it seems fairly stable for a few days other than it’s lagging something terrible. I’ll do some extremely basic action —loading a clip into the viewer for example— and I’ll get the beach ball for 5-10 seconds. Sometimes when this occurs there appears to be no activity on the external drives (that is, the lights aren’t flashing).
4/27, This is when things start to become really inconsistent. I pull all drives and launch FCP without any media connected. It appears to run fine. No lags, no crashes. I quit and remount just two of the media drives, each into a native fw 800 port. Restart FCP. At first it lags when I’m rolling over media from one of these two drives, then after a while it quits lagging. I quit app, restart; everything runs fine. I let it sit while I write an email, return and now it lags when rolling over media from the one drive. Then it gets over it again and runs fine.
I reboot from my other startup drive and get a SoftRAID error. It is not on the Final Cut startup drive, but one I’m not actually using now. I reboot from the Final Cut drive and get the same SoftRAID error message (I may not have cleared the error messages in SoftRAID; can’t recall). I eject the two internal drives I’m not using.
I swap the firewire cables for the two drives I’ve been testing and launch FCP. Seems to run fine. Quit and attempt to remount all 7 drives. One won’t mount. This is new. Launched Disc Utility and it hung trying to find the drives. Forced Quit while it was still looking. Tried to restart the Mac, but it hung up on shutdown. Forced shutdown from power button, powered down drives.
Powered up. Launched FCP. Ran fine for a while then encountered occasional lags. Sometimes the problem drive from earlier flickers during these hang-ups and sometimes none of the drives do.([I realize, in the history of computing, ‘occasional hang ups’ would not be considered an issue, but on the original boot drive, the app either crashed or it didn’t; when it ran, it ran immediately.)
Had to go back to the other startup drive for something. Came back, relaunched FCP. Had a small sequence (2:44) in timeline, hit play, it hung up. First one drive flickered then several other drives in turn. Some of them had no media in this sequence. Eventually it settled down. Everything feels very unstable.
Ran Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. The iffy drive’s directory was only slightly off, less than 5%.
4/28, While reading an email, with nothing going on in the background, I got a SoftRAID read error. That drive holds only files for apps that weren’t running at the time. Since these drives are no longer RAIDed, I can isolate which drive is having problems. It’s ‘Media 1’ in Bay 2. I quit FCP and it crashes on shutdown. I’ve now got a great app called FCS Maintenance Pack (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_maintenance.htm), which includes a Crash Analyzer. It suggests this crash was caused by Qmaster.
4/30, Since the main issue now seems to be hang time. We decide to install a couple of eSATA cards. I plug four of the seven drives into eSATA ports and now have just 3 drives running each to their own firewire 800. Possibly a marginal improvement, but probably not.
5/3 We run some speed tests and the external drive that was acting up earlier is pretty slow. Turns out it was very fragmented. We defrag and things look better. Much better, in fact. For an entire day. It runs so well that I decide, on 5/4, to run Compressor on a ninety minute show to see if I’ve got an any performance improvements (I decided to not an entire Compressor/Qmaster conversation here). Compression was much faster. Then, not immediately, but shortly thereafter, I had a panic crash where the screen comes up in several languages telling you to shut down from the power button. I restarted the computer to make sure it would start up and then quit for the day.
5/6-7. Today, it was very difficult to get the computer to start. As best I can recall, it would stop halfway into the startup screen and I would have to power down at the CPU and start over. Eventually it got up and after trashing some preferences seemed to run OK. Today and tomorrow everything works perfectly. No drive issues, no lag, no SoftRAID error messages. My computer works exactly the way I would expect the biggest, baddest Mac on the market should. I take the weekend off.
Monday 5/10/10, Early in the day, I get this error message: “The device you removed was not properly put away. Data might have been lost or damaged. Before you unplug your device, you must first select its icon in the Finder and choose Eject from the File menu.”
I haven’t pulled anything, nor do I see any drives missing from the desktop. Something could have gone offline for an instant and then back on without me spotting it, but I can’t find any evidence. This has happened a few times over the past week or so (forgot to include above and I can’t say exactly when it started). At least once when this message came up it locked up Final Cut. Still, everything runs well today. Tomorrow I’ll only make modest use of the computer and not run FCP at all.
Wednesday, 5/12/10, FCP starts to hang up again. I run speed tests on the drives and one of them — not the one I recently defragged — just hangs during what should be a quick test. I eject and remount the drive and it gives me decent — not great — performance numbers. I go back to work. The rest of the day is rough with lots of lagging. Then, in the early evening, shortly after I’ve run Disk Warrior and Disk Utility, I’m playing a sequence and I hit the pause button and it doesn’t pause. Typically, in FCP, if it crashes, it crashes, everything stops. Not this time. I think my keyboard has become disconnected. I crawl under my desk and fiddle with the USB connector and when I come back up, my screens (I have two) were all messy, like acne, like snow, like nuclear rain. Scattered pixels over the app’s windows and over the desktop were screwy.
Eventually FCP crashed (Crash Analyzer just said it was caused by an unknown error) and I was able to regain control of the computer. I would like to quit for the evening and start drinking, but I’ve got to get out a DVD of my project. I eventually successfully export a QuickTime Reference file from Final Cut and then successfully compress it in Compressor. I then eject all the external drives. The QuickTime is on “Media 1,” which is one of the three internal 1-TB Samsung drives.
I start the build in DVD Studio Pro. It gets all the way to the end, hangs on 'Completed,' and then I get the "…device you removed was not properly put away…" message. Now I can't swear that one of the drive icons didn't blink off for a moment, but they were all there when I looked. But when I opened Media 1 all the folders in it appeared to be empty.
A restart brings all that info back. I check Console for the moment of the incident and, sure enough, it indicates “disk4: media is not present.” I think this is referring to “Media 1,” but I can’t find in Disk Utility or SoftRAID a reference to disk4 so I’m not sure.
5/13/10, I’m crashing all day long. Crash Analyzer, variously says the problems are caused by my graphics card, a corrupt project file, some inappropriate media in the project, corrupt audio files or a problematic QuickTime component. There were also some force-quits, which don’t generate a report. Now, I’m pretty impressed with this analytic software overall, but I think I’ve overwhelmed it. I don’t honestly think it’s a different one of these things each time I crash.
I run Apple Hardware Diagnostics from the install CD and it finds nothing wrong.
5/14/10, Today I start a crash journal. The remainder of this history is pasted from it.
I wish I had started this when the problems started. We now join our story already in progress.
    5/14/10, 2:45 FC Drive
Pulled “Media 1,” which appeared to be the source of the SoftRAID errors, from computer then relaunched and started FCP. Played OK for a few minutes then started displaying pink or green frames. Then it hung for a while. I did other things for a few minutes. Returned and now it played, but with HUGE pixilation and loud audio static. Then hung up. I'm now hoping it will crash — which will generate a Crash Report in Crash Analyzer — instead of having to force quit — which won't generate a report.
    3:05
Forced quit CompressorTranscoder and CompressorController from the Activity Monitor. No affect. Forced quit all Compressor and Qmaster related processes. No effect. Finally forced quit FCP.
    3:09
Launched Disk Utility and as it displayed drives, I got the "…the device you removed was not properly put away" message. All drives appear on the desktop, but “Deception” (one of the external eSATA-connected drives) doesn't show in Disk Utility. Here are a few lines from the Console for that moment (bolding mine):
    May 14 15:08:54 martin-nelsons-mac-pro Disk Utility[364]: Disk Utility started.

    And then farther down:
    May 14 15:09:00 martin-nelsons-mac-pro kernel[0]: disk8s3: media is not present.
    May 14 15:09:00 martin-nelsons-mac-pro kernel[0]:

    Etc.
When I clicked on “Deception” in a Finder window, Finder quit responding. Quit all open apps and tried to do a force relaunch of Finder. Desktop cleared and then everything hung there. Chose Shut Down from the Apple pulldown menu. Menu went away leaving only the desktop image with no icons on it, but it didn't shut down. Forced shutdown from the CPU 3:31
Powered off all external drives. Restarted. Accidentally in other startup disc. Restart again on FC drive. Can't find any reference in SoftRAID, Disk Utility or System Profiler to disk8s3 (from Console text above). Mounted Deception and still couldn't find a reference. 3:59
4:03, Decided to verify “Deception” using Disk Utility. It's predicting it will take 28 minutes. Should take about 20 seconds. I verified all drives including this one yesterday and found no problems. Also ran Disk Warrior and found it less than 10% (maybe much less; don't remember) out of order.
Meanwhile, Disk Utility seems to have stopped progressing. Activity Monitor doesn't suggest it's hanging up, but there's no movement in Real or Virtual Memory usage and in Disk Utility nothing happening in the progress bar. I stopped verify and started it again. It makes a quick run to Checking volume bitmap and then again says Estimated time: 28 minutes. That's just crazy. 4:14, I'm gonna ignore it for a while and see if there's any progress. 4:22, Finished running finally. “Deception appears to be OK.”
Launch Disk Warrior. Deception is 8% out of order. Try to rebuild, but am told it's in use. Quit all apps including DW. Restart DW. Deception is sill supposedly in use. Restart computer. This takes forever. Launch DW and attempt to rebuild Deception's directory. I get a disk malfunction error and am told to backup my data from the preview disk
I've got a spare drive. Guess I'll start copying.
    4:54 Started copying 931 GB
This ends up taking a couple of days, which gives me time to write this novel.
5/16, After copying. My tech guy wants me to run TechTools v3.1.3. It hangs up trying to find volumes. I have to force quit. I then try to shut down, but ultimately have to do it from the CPU. I power off all external drives and restart. It won’t restart. I power down from the CPU and start again. This time after 10 minutes or so it starts. I think it might be a good idea to restart. It shuts down, but won’t restart. I launch from my other startup disk. This works fine. I run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the “Final Cut” startup disk. It finds no problems and only minor directory issues. I rebuild the directory anyway.
I restart in “Final Cut” drive and rebuild its permissions. Launch TechTools and it scans volumes quickly. It’s now running. It’s now done. It finds nothing.

There were major crashes at various points when all of the firewire drives were offline and other times when they were online and two of the three extra internal drives were offline. The “Final Cut” drive, which is one of the internal, aftermarket 1TB drives and is serving as the startup drive when working in Final Cut Pro, was, of course, online.
There have been numerous times in the last few weeks when I have not been able to successfully turn on the computer on the first try —it gets partway launched then hangs, forcing me to hit the power button— or turn off the computer without resorting to hitting the power button on the CPU.
    Possible fixes:
We’ve removed the one drive flagged by Softraid for errors, Media 1. And I’m replacing the second drive that appears damaged, Deception. Can the problem be further disk errors or driver conflicts? Most of my external drives are Lacie 1TB disks, formatted with the Lacie utility in Mac OS Extended format with the Apple Partition Map. The two remaining internal Samsung drives are formatted with SoftRAID as single disks, in Mac OS Extended format with GUID partition scheme and block sizes optimized for digital video. Memory was tested with “memtest.”
Could it be bad RAM? We have the stock 6GB that came with the system. Could replacing it with 16GB of new RAM possibly fix it?
Is it a bad video card, processor, or motherboard problem? The pervasiveness of the problem makes me think it is a hardware issue, not software.
I’d like to test the drives with a second Mac Pro, but I have none available.
Would downgrading Final Cut Studio and removing one of the Pro Applications Updates possibly help?
Well, I'm exhausted. I wonder if anyone made it to the end. If you have any ideas I would be eternally grateful. I'm tapped.
    Martin

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck
    Terry

  • Mac Pro 2012 crashes regularly after loading Mavericks

I upgraded the OS to Mavericks, direct from Lion, on my Mac Pro 2012 computer, since when it crashes and restarts spontaneously. Herewith the reports. Can anyone offer a straightforward solution? There is no sign of Google inspired crashes, as with other users. Is Mavericks named to draw attention to its spontaneous behaviour??

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 crash after gear on boot

Hi. I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008), with Mavericks installed. A couple of days ago, it crashed hard (in Portal, as it happens) and then wouldn't boot. When it was crashing it showed full green in various (dark? or random?) areas of the screen, and then random vertical lines of coloured noise. The cursor went jerky, and then stopped moving at all. Having decided this was a more serious problem than a simple steam error, I forced the machine to shut down with the case button, and then turned it back on again, but it wouldn't come up, and hasn't (with exceptions, see below) since.
    The behaviour is:
Boot chime, Apple, Apple-with-spinning-gear, a sensible (it seems) amount of spinning gear, then the gear stops and I get some flashing on my screen (like, a complete red screen, or orange screen – colours vary – displayed for less than one refresh, so I see a brief flash of colour with tearing). Occasionally instead of flashing I get an unexpected reboot: once when this happened I also got the kernel's (multiple language) "Your computer restarted because of a problem" screen.
Safe Mode has the same problem (I get a progress bar, when the progress bar completes everything stops and "screen flashing" happens).
EFI boot volume selector works fine, but when I continue to boot, either from my main partition or the Recovery partition, I get the same problem.
Verbose mode works until the point where the graphical user interface should come back, which gives me a white screen and nothing (except screen flashing). I do get a certain amount of "kSMCBadArgumentError" before that point, but see below.
Single User Mode works as it should, fsck finds no errors, all my data appears to be on my hard drive as expected, but on typing "exit" to continue boot I end up in the same position as Verbose Mode. Trying kextload to load all my extensions gives the kSMCBadArgumentError lines, but no other problems (until I try to boot). I have already tried using SUM to remove all the launch agents/daemons/extensions from /Library/ (leaving only the ones in /System/Library/). This worked (I modified the disk as I intended) but didn't help me boot.
I did get the recovery partition to boot once (seemingly randomly), Disk Utility found no errors. The full Apple Hardware Test doesn't seem to be an option from the recovery partition? (I've moved house a few times in the last 6 years, and I don't know where my physical AHT disk is any more. I do have a friend who would probably be able to burn one if Apple provides the disk image as a download.) I have had a full successful boot once too (maybe on the restart after using the recovery partition?) which let me use my administrator user perfectly (I used it for about 5 minutes?), but then after logging out and while trying to log in as my "standard" user I got full green noise as before, and the machine locked up again.
I've rotated my RAM (I have 2x1GB sticks and 2x2GB, as well as my usual 6GB config I've tried each of the pairs in "two-stick" configuration). No difference, except on one boot I got error lights (full on) on one riser, I assume that was because I hadn't seated it properly during rotation, because I took it out and put it back in again and I've not had the lights before or since.
I've also tried swapping in an older system drive, but that made no difference. (The old drive may have been a little flaky itself, but single-user mode booting reliably suggests, at least to me, that my normal drives aren't the problem?)
Without wishing to privilege a hypothesis, could it be the graphics card? I have the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, I believe (it looks exactly like the pictures of that card online, anyway) – installed by Apple at build time. I tried taking it out and putting it back in again, in case it had become poorly seated, but it seemed firmly in place – for example, the PCIe retainer clip was fully engaged before I removed the card – and reseating it didn't make any difference. I don't have a second card to test with, unfortunately. I wouldn't mind getting a new card to keep the machine running, of course, but I'd like to make sure that it's going to solve my problem before buying it!
Thanks for any help you can give!
Edited to correct OS field, which didn't work. I really do mean Mavericks.

RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Mac Pro sudden restar while working

I just got my new Mac Pro and having very strage behaviour. While working logout suddenly and login screen comes automatically. All my apps are closed and my work which I was doing.... also lost. It happen specially with Cinema 4D app because most of time I am using this. It was happening with 10.6.8 OS and now 10.7 OS also happening this.
I tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM and SMC... but no luck. Any idea what is problem with bmy new Mac Pro.
    TIA

    Thanks for the advice!
I'll look into getting a good quality UPS in the meantime, however the situation changed the other day when I came home from work.
I turned on the Mac and it got as far as the login screen. After about two minutes of being on the login screen (I didn't actually enter my details or touch anything at this stage) it just turned itself off randomly. Therefore, I don't think what I'm trying to do in Avidemux is totally to blame for the problem in this respect.
After the Mac turned itself off this time, it wouldn't let me turn it back on for about 30 seconds of pressing the power button. When it finally started up again, it seemed to run fine for the rest of the evening.
Does this sound like the power supply is on its way out or could it be something else? If I need a new power supply, will I need a specific type of power supply and not just a standard PC one?
    Any further help appreciated.

  • Two startup quirks with new Mac Pro

Just upgraded from an aging Power Mac G5 to a Mac Pro (with new 24" Cinema Display replacing my old ADC Cinema Display).
So far so good overall. But two odd startup quirks have popped up.
First, with my old setup, when I restarted the Mac, the startup chimes would sound through my external speakers. Now, the sound (barely audible) comes from the Mac Pro itself. Not a big problem. But I'd rather hear the sound through the speakers. I am wondering if there is any way to get the Pro to do this.
Second, I have a second display (connected via the DVI port). When I turn on the Mac, the DVI display comes up first and shows the startup gray and blue screens. The Cinema Display (even though it is the monitor with the menubar) does not come on until the Desktop background appears. With my old Power Mac G5 setup, the Cinema Display came on immediately and showed the startup screens. Again, not a big deal. But I am wondering why the shift and if it can be shifted back.
As I write this, it occurs to me that these two matters may have essentially the same cause (e.g., components not coming on as soon as expected). Just a thought.

    Hi mfiman,
I can only answer your first question, since I don't have a two-display setup.
With the introduction of the very first Mac Pro in 2006 Apple seems to have changed the behaviour of the startup chime to only come from the internal speaker.
To my knowledge this can not be changed (have it too !).
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Adjustment Layer Issue in CS3 & new Mac Pro

    anyone having the following issue:
when adding an adjustment layer to a file I get a spinning beachball for 10-30 seconds before the adjustment layer is applied. Strange behaviour never seen before. New Mac Pro Dual Quad 3.2ghz, 10gb Ram, Nvidia Gefore 8800GT.
    S.O.S.
    Thx!

How did you update to 10.5.3?
Via Software Update; or from the COMBO?
[I notice that MacFixit are also now strenuously urging people to stay away from SU and to use the COMBO instead.
    [Pace Stockholm!]
And did you run DiskWarrior and Repair permissions both before and after you installed the new software?

Has anyone an idea what can be the cause for this behaviour?
    Thanks a lot

Yesterday when I started up my Mac Pro I noticed that it sure seemed loud. I normally never shut it off, so I hadn't noticed that it was getting pretty loud. Then, for the first time since I've been having the wake up problem, it went to sleep as I was surfing the web. This time instead of just shutting it off and restarting, I decided to reset the SMC. I then figured since I had everything disconnected I'd take a look at the GPU and clean the dust out of it. After vacuuming, being real careful to not fry anything with static, I put it into a different slot than before. Plugged everything back in and started it up. First thing I noticed was the volume of the GPU fan was much quieter than it has ever been, no joke. I haven't shut it off in almost 24 hours and it hasn't gone to sleep at all. I've read other posts on the net that claimed the SMC reset and moving the card to a different slot didn't fix the problem for very long, so I'm hoping that isn't what fixed it. I'm hoping it was just dirty, as I have already had to replace 2 GPU's in 2 years and I can find many other things to spend money on. Now more than ever since the only card I'd want that Apple offers is $460. I hope this helps you, and me for that matter.

  • 2006 Mac Pro + NEC 3090 - grey screen not displayed during boot

I have a September '06 Mac Pro 1,1 (Woodcrest variant) hooked up to an NEC 3090 30" LCD monitor, running OS X 10.5.7. Previously, I was using an Eizo S2110W 21" LCD; turning the monitor and computer on would cause the following to be displayed (in order):
    1. Light grey background with dark grey Apple logo with spinning thing.
    2. Solid blue background.
    3. Leopard wallpaper.
    4. Log-in dialogue.
Since using the NEC, the grey screen is not displayed at all: the display stays blank until the blue screen is displayed, and then the Leopard wallpaper and so on. This is using the 2560x1600 native resolution of the display, and has occurred using both 10.5.6 and 10.5.7.
If I change the resolution to 1280x960 and boot, the grey screen is displayed. If I change it to 1600x1200, I get weird corruption on-screen during the period when the grey screen should be displayed; for some reason, this includes part of the desktop wallpaper I was using before I rebooted.
Resetting the non-volatile RAM using Command-Option-P-R works for the very first time I boot the computer, though the grey screen is displayed at very low resolution. If I reboot from the log-in dialogue immediately afterwards, normal behaviour occurs - i.e. the blank screen.
The upshot of all of the above is that if I want to boot into Windows, or install OS X (e.g. when Snow Leopard comes out), I have to remember to boot into my existing OS X installation, change resolution, reboot whilst remembering also to hold down the ALT/Option key. It would be much easier if I could do away with having to change resolution.
I have tried connecting the monitor to a PPC Mac mini at 1600x1200 (it won't go any higher), using Tiger 10.4.11 (not sure of exact version - the latest). At this resolution, the grey screen is displayed.
Using a '08 MacBook Air (first generation) and the supplied DVI adapter, also at 1600x1200, nothing is displayed on the NEC until I get to the log-in screen. This occurs if the NEC is set to be the primary display or the secondary one - the only difference is where the log-in dialogue is displayed. I am not familiar with dual-screen behaviour, so I can't say whether anything is supposed to be displayed or not (i.e. does the grey appear on both displays?).
I have been in touch with NEC Europe support on this issue, who suggested it might have something to do with the 10.5.7 release. I know this not to be the case, as it was occurring prior to 10.5.7 being released.
    Any ideas?

Put more of your hardware listed in your profile.
I looked and don't see you list your graphics card anywhere.
    Graphic card it came with was either X1900 (watch for heat and dust bunnies and clogged vent);
    OEM 7300GT (seems unlikely).
You could have replaced either with 8800GT or ATI 3870.
    Require 10.5.2+ ideally 10.5.6+.
Some problems cropped up with 10.5.7. 10.5.7 doesn't work on some (many) 3rd party displays and stay with 10.5.6 if necessary until it is fixed or resolved.
But you say it happens with 10.5.6 also, and was doing so before 10.5.7? which makes your problem somewhat different or unique.
Zapping PRAM or NVRAM reset obviously shouldn't be needed repeatedly. And your graphics card probably needs to be replaced, or test with another card to rule it out.
