Strategies and alternatives to backup and archiving

Please i will gladly welcome suggestions on where to find(documentation) and/or what are the alternative technologies or techniques i have in j2EE, for backing up and archiving files.

Doing system-level tasks in J2EE is not a good idea. Use a system level tool to do it (like cron and tar on Unix).

Same problem here: windows 8.1, dell backup and recovery 1.6.2.4. During the installation, when the box of "updating PE environment" appears, i get "factory error 5"

Migration 50 Laptop using MS MDT and USMT for BACKUP and DATArecovery

Dears all,
I currently manage a migration project for 50 Laptop via Microsoft MDT2010 and I use USMT for BACKUP and data recovery.
Obviously users have an Iphone and Itunes 10.x.
I would like to know what are the directories under Win XP I need to setup in order to backup the complete IPhone and what are the destination directories to inject them back into Win7 x86.

Good alternative to Backup and iDisk

Now that iDisk is coming to an end, I'm looking for an alternative to the very useful Backup software which automatically backed up to iDisk.
What I liked was the ability of setting it to back-up certain file types, such as Word and Pages files etc. I've tried Sugarsync but that doesn't give that facility. Does anyone know of any other back-up solutions that do this, please?

I do have a local backup using Time Machine but I like the idea of the extra security of backing up irreplaceable documents offsite. Backup did that beautifully.
Interesting idea of using FTP - I'd ot thought of that. I'll look into it, thanks.

How can I stop iTunes from dropping my iPhone 5 when connected with USB cable? It sees it and start a backup and then it drops and tells me cannot find phone.

My HP notebook 64 bit Windows 8 after the last iTunes update will detect my iPhone 5, sync and when finished with thy sync I start a backup to my computer. It runs fine for a bit and then gives me message I have changed settings on my iPhone 5 and asked me if I want to update. I OK the question and runs a bit more and then drops the connection telling me cant find my iPhone 5. I can restart iTunes and start over and does the same thing.
ITunes update 11.1.1.62 had difficulties with the updates on 64 bit Windows 7 and 8.1 causing an error on boot other trouble. I found solution on research that insturcted to Remove iTunes, Bonjour, Apple Support and Apple Update and reload iTunes old version. I simply reloaded the new version becasue did not have the old version of iTunes. I have been working fine with the old version. I know problem is a simple setting somewhere but it is NOT SIMPLE to me since I dont know where the find the simple setting.
Will someone tell what to do. I appreciate all you smart guys.

My apologies...the version is 11.1.4.62 not as stated aboive in my problem description. I'm trying again and it just finished syncing fine and my iPhone 5 is still connected to iTuns physcially with USB lightening cable and is displaying the iPhone icon top right. I clicked on it and iTunes is now "hung' or locked up. Shows to be an active running application but can't get back to it so willl have to kill with task manager. There is some kind of problem going on with the latest version of iTunes and Wndows 7 and 8.1 or something. My iPhone 5 now has a new feature that it is now asking me if I "Trust" this computer. iTunes just came "unhung" after several minutes while I was typing this. Now I am going to start the backup to this computer HP Winsows 8.1 and iTune 11.1.4.62 and see what happens. Says it is Backing up Jerrys iPhone but the Barber Pole progress bar is not turning an iTunes is hung again and I cant get back to it from this page I am typing on. Maybe it will eventually release as it did a moment ago.

HT1766 I got my iPhone 5 replaced and had to backup and restore with the cloud, but all my apps started disappearing one by one??

I had backuped my phone before and after I got the iOS7 update. Then, I went to the apple store to change my phone for a new one because my old one had a hardware issue with the camera. It was all going smoothly until I saw each and every one of my apps disappearing one by one...The people at the store told me that it was because I had a bad backup (which could be caused by multiple reasons)??? So we tried doing it three times with different backup times, and this kept on happening. Why is this happening and what do I do to get my apps back, hopefully with the latest backup I had done prior to this disaster???? Please help!!

Your iPad has to be running the same or higher version of iOS as you phone was in order for the backup to appear. If it isn't, you'll have to update your iPad first. There are some limitations involved in restoring an iPad to an iPhone backup to be aware of, including:
Camera Roll photos and videos are not restored. These can only be restored to another iPhone.
Third-party apps and their data will be restored but the app icon order/organization won't be.
iPhone-only apps will not be restored to an iPad.

My bookmarks have disappeared and I can't do new bookmarks. I have tried restoring them by clicking on backups and by downloading backup and neither will work.

That's all I know. I've followed the directions for restoring them and nothing works.

I erase all content and settings no backup and iphone from other country

HELP....
im in indonesia,my friend sent me an iphone 3g from japan .Iphone Sim card registered from a japan carrier (SOFT Bank--- Unuseful).
I might have experimented,and just wanting to restore the iphone to its original state, i initiated an "erase all content and settings" and iphone not working.
After putting it in DFU (Device Firmware Update) and restoring it,now only get a images with itunes and usb cable and the option of emergency calls and No other options.
connect with Itunes, says 'SIM card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported
Anybody can HELP me....

To Restore, you need the SIM card that came with the iPhone. Restoring the phone without a proper SIM card installed (in your case, a SoftBank SIM) 'bricks' the iPhone.
Your phone cannot be used in Indonesia (unless it's linked to a SoftBank account and you're paying the huge bill for international roaming).
Telkomsel cannot change the setting. (Nor will they even service your phone - iPhone warranty coverage is limited to the country of purchase).
As above - send the phone back, get an iPhone from Telkomsel.

Re: OVM Repository and VM Guest Backups - Best Practice?

I have also been looking into how to backup an OVM Repository, and I'm currently thinking of doing it with the OCFS2 reflink command, which is what it used by the OVMM 'Thin Clone' option to create a snapshot of the virtual disk's .img file. I thought I could create a script that reflink's all the virtual disks to sperate directory within the repository, then export the repository via OVMM and backup all the snapshots. All the snapshots can then be deleted once the backup was complete.
The VirtualMachines directory could also be backed up in the same way, or I would have thought it would be safe to back this directory directly, as the files are very cfg files are very small and change infrequently.
I would be interested to hear from anyone that has any experience of doing a similar thing, or has any advise about whether this would be doable.

yes, that is one common way to perform backups. Unfortunately, you'll have to script those things yourself. Some people also use the xm command to pause the VM for just the time it takes to create the reflinks (especially if there is more than one virtual disk in the machine and you want to make sure they are consistent).

Backup and recovery oracle XE

Hi, oracle guru.
I have searched in google how to backup and recover to and from removable disk or hard disk (in separated folder) in oracle XE 10g, but I didn't found any.
I tried to use backup and recovery database given from oracle itself, and I analyze which file is added and modified. I do somekind of trial and error action. First, I backup my database and then I copy 2 files (I forgot the names, 1 is about 853 kb, and one is the backup file (about 500 mb)). And then I do some user deletion (I have several users) and then I backup and copy again to different folder from the previous one. Note that I am not using archive log: on.
Unfortunately, when I copy the previous backup (the one with complete users) to oracle folder, the restore database does work until, I guess starting database, it throws error saying that something error in SYSTEM.DBF, thus making my oracle doesn't work, even I canot go to database home page.
My question is that how to backup and recover database to and from removable disk or harddisk with different folder? Which files do I need to copy or should I add backup and recover script?

Yes, as I already mentioned, previously (assumes) that I have database with several users (say 5 users). And I use backup database and restore database from oracle folder in start menu, and it works perfectly (assuming that I delete one user and then restore database).
However, I tried to copy the backup file (which I mentioned before, but I am not sure the files I am copying is backup file since I only analyzed it). So, I test it. First I backup, and I copy to separate folder. Next, I do some user deletion, and I do backup. Say, for example I want to use that backup file in another computer. I copy the files to oracle installation folder. One in product/database/ folder, and one in flash-recovery area. When I try to use restore database (in start menu), it works, until, I guess, starting database, and it throws error saying that error in SYSTEM.DBF.
So, my point is that, how do I backup my database so that the backup file can be in separated folder (for example in removable disk), thus I can also select backup file to be restored.

Backup and data transfer from old to new iphone

I recently upgraded to the iphone 5s from iphone 4 and need to backup and transfer data from old phone to the new phone. I want to backup using itunes rather than using icloud. Do I need to disable icloud backup on the old phone before I start the backup process. Do I need to disable anything on my computer (icloud). I am using Windows Vista and Itunes Version 10.7. Would appreciate step by step instructions for backup and transfer.. I am not computer or iphone saavy and don't want to mess things up.

If you backup with iTunes and you restored from the backup and the data are gone, then there is no where to retrieve them from unless you have another backup that contains those data.
Launch iTunes on the computer and go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices. You will see a window with all of your backups listed in it.
If you see a recent backup that you are certain contains the data that you need, recover deleted data from iPhone backup.
If your note is gone from iCloud.com there is only a few ways to possibly recover it.
The first things I would check is a iCloud Backup, a iTunes Backup, or a 3rd party email that may have contained the note. To restore from a iCloud or iTunes backup follow this link. This article explains how to restore a device from either back up.
Note if you have backed up since the note went missing, you will not have the note on the backup. Make sure you do not back up if trying to restore from a back up as this will back up the content without the note.
To get to the "Set up assistant" on an iOS device, you must go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. Once the phone restarts, you will be at the "Set up Assistant"

How do I backup and view text messages from my iphone 4? I want to know where and how to backup and view text messages and all other personal files, including voicemail, recent calls, etc. from my iphone. Is this function in iTunes and/or does iTunes already backup this stuff when I sync?

Apple provides functionality in the backup done via iTunes to backup the device and text messages. There is no functionality to view the text messages on the computer.
About iOS backups
Other programs are available which can extract text messages from the device or the iTunes created backup and then be viewed on the computer. To my knowledge, no program exists which can force backed up text messages into the device once they've been removed.
Google is your friend when looking for 3rd party software related to text messages.
