Strategies for Laptop & Desktop use?

How do you guys who have both a desktop and laptop plan on organizing your work?
In B4.1 I had a main library on my desktop pointing to everything and a slim library on my laptop. When in the field I would upload photos from the cards into the slim library on the laptop and do some editing & tagging. When I got back to home base, I would create a 'binder' of the photos I had imported into the laptop and then load that binder into the main library on the desktop.
Now in 1.0 and with binders now gone, I have a few questions:
1) I assume that we're supposed to move the physical photo files/directories to the new home and then 'import' those into the main library. Is this the approach others are using?
2) I shoot in RAW and convert to DNG when I import. After some experimentation I discovered that I need to turn on the 'Automatically write changes into XMP' in the preferences in order to carry the edits I've made in one lightroom library to another lightroom library. If I'm using DNG this doesn't necessarily mean that a seperate XMP sidecar file will be written but rather that the lightroom-specific data will be embedded within the DNS file, correct?
3) I also import some jpeg files. Will edits I make to those files also carry-over from one lightroom library to another lightroom library assuming that I have the 'Automatically write changes into XMP' preference set?
4) Is it a 'bad idea' to use multiple libraries? I've got over 30,000 photos and in B4.1 I had one library that was the 'archive' library which contained everything up until about a quarter ago. A second smaller library was used for day-to-day work. This approach seemed to work best because I noticed very poor performance when using the large library. Some initial tests in 1.0 suggest the same issue with a large library. Therefore I'm thinking of taking the same approach in 1.0 with a large 'archive' library and a smaller day-to-day library.
5) If for some reason I decide to relocate where the photos live (i.e. right now then are in a directory called 'Photographs'. Let's say that I want to move them all into a different directory. Obviously clicking on every single photos to point to the new location is out of the question. Is the best remedy for this situation to 're-import' all of the photos?
Thanks,
Jeff

I'm curious what people do in a situation with both a laptop and desktop. Do they have one Lightroom library on the laptop and another on the desktop - and then move files from one to another?
It sounds like Christopher's approach with an external HD is a good idea if you're willing to take the HD along with you when away.
So I'm thinking that the most appropriate thing to do in a situation with both a laptop and desktop is to have a separate library on each, and not one library that you keep synchronized between the two?
I'd love to see how others plan on using Lightroom in this type of setup with both a laptop for out in the field and a desktop at home base.

    Hi,
Since it worked previously, a quick solution is to run System Restore and get back to the previous status when the issue didn’t occur.
If system restore doesn’t help, please also try the following:
    1.    Check if you can establish the VPN via other connections except the connection through the UMTS card.
    2.    Reset the PPTP and L2TP WAN miniport with running the following commands one by one in an elevated command prompt:
    Netcfg -u MS_L2TP
    Netcfg -u MS_PPTP
    Netcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf -c p -i MS_PPTP
    Netcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf -c p -i MS_L2TP
Then reboot the computer and see how it works.
Meanwhile, I would like to share the following with you for your reference:

    Hope this helps. Thanks.

    Hi Experts,

Currently, i need to reboot some 50-60 desktops remotely.
i am using the below powershell command
    gc c:\Temp\machineList.txt |%{Restart-computer -computername $_ -force}
It is working perfect for me but what i want is before machine gets rebooted User should get a prompt like "Your machine will be rebooted in 60 seconds, Please save your work".
How i can achieve this in a powershell script.
    Thanks in advance.

an other option is to start taskmanager on Domain Controller

    "taskmanager"?
That only works for users logged into the dc. Users should not be allowed to log into the DC directly.
I suspect you mean to use the MSG facility if it is not disabled.  MSG /?.  This can send messages to uses on various systems.

  • I want to build a custom flash player for my desktop

I want to build a custom flash player for my desktop, using C# and Visual Studio 2008. Where do I start? I just want a real simple one to play swf files. Play, stop, loop, full screen, normal size. I'll start there. Where do I go? I've searched the web for an answer, and found several example projects that don't compile, or are incomplete. It's very frustrating. This shouldn't be that difficult.

I think you started the right way - looking for example programs.
If they won't compile, then they probably contain errors.  Fix the errors until they compile.  Then develop your own extensions.
This is one way of developing applications, the other way is starting from scratch.

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?
Can someone advise as to whether i can do the following:
Future Internet connection -------------------TIME CAPSULE (containing all files) -------------- Backed up on the WD 2T Hard-drive I have
(not connected yet)                                         I                                                          (*connected to timecapsule physically)

(used for remote working)       (Used for home working)     (used for heavy CAD and rendering)    (not being used for anything at the moment)        (& iPods)
I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)
    Kind Regards

The diagram was supposed to look more like this......

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • Adobe Flash Builder 4 licence is for one desktop and one laptop, only one at a time run or

After installing Adobe Flash Builder 4 needed install AIR? Adobe Flex 4 SDK IS ALREADY INCLUDED?
Adobe Flash Builder 4 licence is for one desktop and one laptop, only one at a time run or...?

    hi,
Flashbuilder has the ability to create and run Air content from the IDE, to actually usean Air App outside of the IDE you need to install Air.
Flashbuilder install includes 2 sdks, the 3.5 sdk for 'backward' compatibility with Flexbuilder and for targeting flashplayer 9, the 4.x SDK for Flashbuilder and  targetting flashplayer 10.0 and above.
As far as fair use is concerned Adobe have had fair use software licensing for a while, single user 2 devices is not a problem, what is not clear is if you can use the software on both devices at the same time.

  • Where can I find a retail copy of MAC OSX Snowleopard, that has all the drivers, for both desktop and Laptops?

Where can I find a retail copy of MAC OSX Snowleopard, that has all the drivers, for both desktop and Laptops?

No. 10.6.3 was the last retail release of Snow Leopard. Download the 10.6.8 Combo updater and put it on a flash drive to make it easier to install the largest part of the update.
Also, don't push the same disk image of SL to your Macs unless they are exactly the same model as it was originally installed on. The wrong hardware drivers will otherwise be in use.

  • Skype for Windows Desktop should use Windows Desktop Scaling

Skype for Windows Desktop should use Windows Desktop Scaling.  Right now, on Windows 8.1 with high DPI displays, Skype scales very badly.  It is either very blurry with scaling turned on or is too small to see when scaling turned off.  This negatively affects not just SMS and IM but also webcams. Since Skype is a Microsoft product it should follow the Microsoft guidelines for desktop scaling, even if it is not a Windows 8.1 specific application.  There are a multitude of other applications, like Firefox and Internet Explorer, that work perfectly with desktop scaling.  Skype should do this, too.

I see this thread is over a year old and still no fix for this issue. Just 'upgraded' from old Vista laptop to new hi res Asus N551 with Windows 8.1 and Skype Desktop looks crap! Blurry fonts and pictures, webcam image terrible. In short a disgrace. I hate the kiddies version on Windows 'Metro' style app by the way. So, looked up support and only solution suggested was to retore my custom desktop scaling option back to 100%. Obviously I am not doing that otherwise I would be unable to read the resultant microscopic text in Windows 8.1. So if anyone does have another, workable, solution I be pleased to hear it.After over a year though the Skype team really should make scaling for Skpe Deskto a No. 1 priority.

  • Can I install Adobe Photoshop on my laptop and desktop using the same license?

Can I install Adobe Photoshop on my Laptop and Desktop using the same License?
    Thanks!

    For Photoshop CC:
You may install software on up to two computers. These two computers can be Windows, Mac OS, or one each.
If you install on a third computer, it will request you to de-activate on the other two computers.  You can then reactivate one of the previous two computers, and use Creative Cloud apps on it.

  • Best Cooling Pad for Desktop Use

If anyone has an opinion, please weigh in. I'm curious if anyone has ever used one of those many laptop cooling pads/mats out there. I'm considering buying one for desktop use with my 17" MBPro. When running intense apps for hours on end (FCS, Adobe everything, StarCraft 2) I occasionally push it to the brink of freezing and nothing will save it except a hard-reset.
So if you've ever purchased/used on of these, which are the best? Consider price to be no object. Thanks!
    Chris

@Scott - Been in post-production a long time friend. Laptops are everywhere. Get with the future.
@MacMedic - Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely be looking in to it.
@Lyssa - It's only been recently that my Mac has been having the over-heating issues. I'm thinking it's just a combination of getting old and summer months with no A/C. With regard to my specs you're somewhat close. It's the MacBookPro2,1; Introduced October 2006 discontinued June 2007 and I was unfortunate enough to have purchased mine April 2007 shortly before they were phased out. It has the 2.33GHz Core-2 Duo with 3GB of Memory.
Used to run all my programs just fine with the fans kicking into overdrive, but lately things just get sluggish when it's hot. I typically only have one program running at a time, occasionally two (like Final Cut and After Effects) but not for long periods of time. With the exception of StarCraft 2 the amount of free ram is still in the 100's and I've got just over 100GB free on a 500GB HDD. It's not slow for things like Word Processing, Browsing the web (unless I run into something Flash based in Safari ha ha) or doing Mail.
Anyway, thanks for all the help. Keep the suggestions coming in.

Office 2011 is the current boxed version for the Mac. The two versions are Home and Business. The difference (besides price) is that the Business version includes Outlook. Both contain Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Actually, the Home version also has Outlook hidden on the disk. If you decided later you want to use Outlook, you can call Microsoft for an unlock code to install it from the Home version disk. The unlock cost is essentially the difference between the Home and Business versions.
You mentioned Office 2013, but that's the current Windows version. MS hasn't really stated one way or another if there will be a feature comparable boxed Mac version. If there is, it looks like we won't see it until sometime in 2014. To get the current functionality of Office 2013 in a Mac product, you'd have to purchase the subscription based Office 365.
It does depend on your needs. Often, Office must be used for true compatibility with people you work, or collaborate with. It also has many features the free alternatives don't offer, and can't import or replicate. Otherwise, as Gary noted, Open Office is a good free choice.
