Strategies for post-crash recovery?

After a freeze, forced reboot, and 48 hours with TechTool and DiskWarrior (worth every penny of the $80), I have my computer back. DiskWarrior was able to rescue files, but they're in a "rescued files folder." Some things aren't exactly working well. Spotlight can't find anything.
My question is what is the best strategy to recover full functionality after a crash like this? Should I wipe the disk and re-install. Or re-install over the current operating system?
Also, I have orphaned mail messages that I'd like to put back into mail. Is there an easy way to get them into a mailbox so I can sort them?
One of my iPhoto libraries disintegrated. I have the .jpgs, but am not sure how to put it all back together.
Any tips or suggestions?

Personally I would back up my data and then format the HD and re-install. Also zero all data (which helps if you have bad sectors on the HD). Then re-import your data.

  • Post-Crash Recovery Question

After a system crash, everything has been scrambled.  I'm now trying to
rebuild it.  I'm still on PSE 4.0, so perhaps my setup is too primitive for
my question -- but I'll try:
It does appear that I have been able to salvage most of the Tag and Collection
structures of the Catalog from an older backup, but there are a lot of
    pictures still missing.
So my question is: If I do a "GET" of a folder of pictures, (I have many such folders) is there some feature (or some way), within
Photoshop, to prevent it from accepting another copy of the same exact photo that it already has in its database"?  (My presumption is that there will be some pictures in that folder that have already been put into the Organizer, and some that have not -- I only want the ones that are not already in there.)  If there were just a few pictures, I could handle this manually.  But I have many hundreds, if not thousands.
Thank you very much for any guidance,

PSE has duplicate detection feature. While you import the photos if these are alredy there in database, these won't be reimported and the same would be prompted by a message.

  • Report for Posting Rule details for Functions/items

    Hello
Is there a standard program in SAP to take a report or listing of extract in MS Excel of the posting rule details configuration settings in SAP-JVA.  I am fairly certain there is a program to extract the details in Excel but I am not sure what is the name of that program and how to use it. I appreciate any ABAP programmer or expert can guide me how to go about this listing.
    Thanks

    Hi Raghavendra,
In order to do postings in JVA, we create posting methods and under that Posting method we have to create and configure posting rules. Under the posting method, there are SAP JVA processes or functions and function items that are used to create the posting rules. The posting rules details are specified for each function and function item combination and involve the specification of Recovery indicator along with posting keys, SE indicator and billing indicator.
I am not convinced that the standard codes in my system for posting keys, recovery indicators and billing indicators are exactly the same as the default settings and I need to check it along with the posting rule details.
Please see the screenshots attached to give you an idea. I am looking for an ABAP program or report program to take out a listing of these posting rules details from the system.

  • FIREFOX 26 changed the 'post crash' page with the list of windows and pages. It was a real HTML page with links for each page. Now it isn't (and blows)

    * You changed the page that comes up after a crash - the one which shows the windows and pages that were up before the
    crash.
This used to be a real HTML page and it isn't any more. THis choice was pure isiocy consider how peopel used that page every day (try taking to your users for a change).
The pages listed on that 'post crash page' used to be actual LINKS (you could right click them &
manually open them in another tab - and most peope DID that every day). You could also (and I did this a lot) drag a second
copy of the page, into a new tab (to keep track of all the pages I had not wanted to open)
Now the pages are no longer links. You cannot right-click them.
The thing in the probser is no longer a page that I can drag into a new tab.
Roll the version back and throw this one in the bin...and have a good long talk with your developers about the definition of
    'STUPIDITIY'
Then I try to type anything in the addres bar it is suppose to repoond with the history of old things I have types in the past, or
search for what I type (and in some cases I think it tyes to convert it intoa URL). However it no longer does any of these
things. When I type in the ADDRESS BAR ONLY, I do not get all of my letters to appear. I have to type into a notepad or
into the search and to copy and paste to go to a URL. Nothing that is typed into the address bad responds normally at all
anymore, and I am fairly certain there are no new addons on this machine at all. It does not matter which things I disable. It
still does this. W of course points the finger back at a change to FIREFOX. I wich I could just sitct with one stable release
forever but the MOZILLA folk thing it is best to force peopel awy from a working broswer release to a horrible one (due to it
    being out of date).
FIREFOX 26.0 has 'issues' (ie new *features*/bugs)
    1) History is no longer accurate. My Proof? This machine is the primary one for the entire family (the only PC working). It is
logged in with same user every time and never has its history cleared. It now January 7 so I ought to have a list of all of last
    months browing available to me.
However, according to FIREFOX history, in all of December 2013, the entire family only went to 51 primary URL's. None of
the official TV sites I use to get episodes are listed. None of the official movie sites I use are listed. The primary URL for
ebay is not listed. Only 1 out of our 4 weather sites that I use (at least once a week) are listed. Only 1 of our 3 FINANCE
sites is listed. There ought to be several; hundred root URLs listed.
Please fix history as this change seriously "blows greasy chunks"
PROBLEM (a stupid change in the new FIREFOX version)
FOr a long time, after a crash you got a useful page (a real HTML page) which gave you a list of all of your last sessions
'winwos and tabs' that were open when the browser crashed. there were certain ways of using this page that are no longer
    able to be done.
The old method was wonderful as it had this behavior :
*** The old method for displaying your 'Recovered Tabs' allowed you to :
    a) right click an individual item and open it in a tab without getting rid of that lovely window of your previous session of
    'recovered windows and tabs '.
    2) drag the URL for the entire window of 'recovered windows and tabs ' to a new tab (to make a second copy) so that you
could select just a few of them to open as a group, and stil have the old list handy.
You can no longer do either of these things. The 'recovered windows and tabs ' page no longer has links in it and can no longer be dragged, so you cant select a few of them to use, and keep the rest around for later. NOW - once you choose which pages to open the window is gone forever (can can't get a second copy).
People used to make a copy of the page for later use (with a drag)
we also used to open pages with a right click (which no longer functions
This new method seriously blows big greasy chunks. A parge loss in function has occurred.
Put things back as they were. 26 is full of terrible changes that NOBODY likes. It also has a lot of bugs (history is not reliable at all)

    (1) Firefox's built-in post-crash page has not been a real HTML page for a long time (for example, from the time of Firefox 22, see: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/968212 Want to save LOTS of versions of "Restore Session.xht" from the "oops ..." page for later use]). If you had this working differently with Firefox 25, that might have been created by an extension.
You can check to see whether extensions are disabled or need an update on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. The disabled extensions cluster toward the bottom of the list. To poll for updates, use the "gear" button above the list and choose Check for Updates.
If you used the Reset feature (or Firefox automatically did a reset due to some problem during upgrading), you will need to reinstall missing extensions. The reset feature creates a folder on the desktop named Old Firefox Data. Do you have that folder? There may be data you can recover from it.
    (2) There are many ways for history to get cleared, both internal to Firefox and external. Could you double-check your Privacy settings?
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy
    * The "Firefox will" drop-down says Remember History: Firefox shouldn't be clearing history, but an add-on or external software could do it
    * The "Firefox will" drop-down says Use custom settings for history: inspect the "Clear history when Firefox closes" setting to make Firefox isn't set to clear history. Also check your add-ons and consider external software.
Firefox normally accumulates months of history. However, some of Firefox's database sizes are based on disk space available. If your hard drive is very full, Firefox might reduce the amount of history stored.

  • Crash recovery for zones

    hi,
What's the best way for crash recovery for zones?
    Thanks,
    Rosario

there are some recipes using the snapshot feature of ZFS systems. I tried a solution for non ZFS filesystems:
    to backup:
    df -F nfs | sed "s/ .*//" > /tmp/excludes # this excludes NFS mounted filesystems
    find /$zonepath/$zonename -fstype lofs -prune 2> /dev/null | sed "s/^\/$zonepath\///">> /tmp/excludes # this exclude LOFS mounted filesystems
    echo "$zonename/root/proc" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/var/run" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/system/contract/all" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/system/contract/process" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/etc/mnttab" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/etc/svc/volatile" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/system/object" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/tmp" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/var/svc/log" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/var/log/syslog*" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/var/saf/zsmon/log" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/var/adm/messages*" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/var/adm/wtmpx" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/etc/svc/volatile/repository_door" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/root/tmp/.X11-unix/X0" >> /tmp/excludes
    echo "$zonename/dev/.devfsadm_synch_door" >> /tmp/excludes
    cd /$zonepath
    tar -EcfX /$somepath/$zonename.tar /tmp/excludes $zonename 2> /tmp/$zonename.err
    to restore:
    extract tar
    mkdir of all mount points
mkdir for all dynamic data (i.e. $zonename/root/proc), assigning correct permissions&ownership
create files for all dynamic data (i.e. $zonename/root/etc/mnttab), assigning correct permissions&ownership
this solution requires that the backed up machine, and the restored one, to have the same OS level and patches

  • Can I use my Mini 200 for anything without Recovery Disk?

    Hi,
I´ve got Mini 200-4200. Few months back I had a hard disk failure and a new one was sent by the warranty. I´m abroad though, so it was sent to my friend, who sent it to me, in Nicaragua. The Hard Disk arrived, BUT the recover USB stick not. (they came separately on post, so he posted them to me separately too)... 7 weeks of waiting for post..I think it will not arrive before I leave the country in 6 days and continue travelling.
I´m not a computer person, so the questions might be a bit odd ->
Is there any possibility to do ANYTHING with my Mini (except put it to post and send it back to europe) ???????? I suppose there is no chance to do recovery by connecting with usb to another computer and deal with it online? ....
    Thanks,
    Maire

I can assuming you are refering to the HP Mini 200-4200ea Netbook Computer - p/n B8H26EA but this is only a guess, as there are about 73 Mini 200-4200 models available.
It may be possible to download a Windows 7 ISO from Digital River, a Microsoft hosting partner, and place a boot image on a USB stick. Please see this HP forum thread entitled "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" for instruction on downloading and creating a bootable Windows 7 media. The only problem I see, is there doesn't appear to be a "Windows Starter" image available. One side note... you can install any version you would like on a trial basis... you would have a full 30 days to use Windows before it requires you to enter a valid key. This will get you up and running for the time being.

  • Purchase Order Release Strategies for Changed Amount

    Hi Gurus,
We have a unique request from the business to set the release strategies for POs based on the Still to Deliver amount, not the Net Total Amount of the PO.
Example: Configuration is PO total amount <$5K requires only L1 approval.  PO total amount >$5K requires L1 and L2 approval.  PO was created for $8K and was release using L1 and L2 approvals.  Receipts were posted to PO in the amount of $7K.  Now the buyer has added an additional line item for $1K.  The PO total amount now shows $9K ($8K + $1K), the Still to Deliver field shows only $2K ($1K from original remaining amount + $1K from new line item).  Business wants the release strategy for this change order to go through L1 only since the Still to Deliver amount is <$5K.
Has anyone done this before?  Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Gabe

  • When occurs crash recovery, why use active online redo log not archived log?

If current redo log had archived, but it's still 'ACTIVE'. As we all know, archived log is just an archived copy of the current redo log which is still 'ACTIVE', they have the same data. But why use active online redo log not archived log for crash recovery?(I think, if crash recovery can use archived log, then whether the online redo log is 'ACTIVE' or not, it can be overwritten)
    Quote:
Re: v$log : How redo log file can have a status ACTIVE and be already archived?
    Hemant K Chitale
If your instance crashes, Oracle attempts Instance Recovery -- reading from the Online Redo Logs. It doesn't need ArchiveLogs for Instance Recovery.
    TanelPoder
Whether the log is already archived or not doesn't matter here, when the instance crashes, Oracle needs some blocks from that redolog. Archivelog is just an archived copy of the redolog, so you could use either the online or achive log for the recovery, it's the same data in there (Oracle reads the log/archivelog file header when it tries to use it for recovery and validates whether it contains the changes (RBA range) in it what it needs).

    Aman.... wrote:
    John,
Are you sure that the instance recovery (not the media recovery) would be using the archived redo logs? Since the only thing that would be lost is the isntance, there wouldn't be any archived redo log generated from the Current redo log and the previous archived redo logs, would be already checkpointed to the data file, IMHO archived redo logs won't participate in the instance recovery process. Yep, shall watch the video but tomorrow .
    Regards
    Aman....
That's what I said. Or meant to say. If Oracle used archivelogs for instance recovery, it would not be possible to recover in noarchive log mode. So recovery relies exclusively on the online log.
Sorry I wasted your time, I'll try to be less ambiguous in future

  • Bridge for Mac crashes constantly

I'm running Bridge for Mac 3.8 on a 32 bit MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.8.
I have been trying to transfer music from iTunes to the Z2 without any success.  Every time it ends either with Bridge for Mac crashing or with a fail error.  If I attempt one file at a time it works but if I try to transfer multiple files in a playlist, even if there is room on the Z2, the transfer fails.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Koalabravo,
I'm sorry Bridge didn't work for you. If you give it another chance, you could send me error logs and I'll have the development crew look at your problems.
In that case, here's how to get error logs from Bridge:
    1. In BfM, hold the "alt" key down while selecting the "Phone" menu. Select "Clear logs" to remove all old logs and get a clean start
    2. Reproduce the problem you're having, whether it's connecting the phone, importing photos, doing backup...
    3. In BfM, hold the "alt" key down while selecting the ”Xperia” menu. Select "Export logs"
    4. On the computers desktop there should now be a file named "SonyBridgeForMacLogs_[date].zip
    5. PM that file to me or post the contents here
    Best Regards,

  • Crash recovery of productive db very slow

We had to shutdown a productive database with db2_kill, because it couldn't be stopped normally and had problem with a full FAILARCHPATH (After TSM server had problems, the archiving to TSM has not been successfully any more, even after TSM Server was up again: We had this problems before....)
The crash recovery takes very long.  Sometimes even db2 list utilities <show details> seems to hang.
With db2pd -everything  I can see the progress of the crash recovery:
    Database Partition 0 -- Database PC1 -- Active -- Up 0 days 01:57:14 -- Date 05/07/2008 11:34:59
    Recovery:

So the db has now finished approx 1/3 of the bytes of the forward phase and then also have the backward phase!
In the db2diag.log there are no more entries after beginning of the crash recovery of 09:38.
We have move one logfile from the FAILARCHPATH directory (which was 100% full) to a different directory  to be sure, that the slow crash recovery has nothing to do with the full FAILARCHPATH.
The log_dir directory  has 20 logfiles (LOGPRIMARY+ LOGSECOND) in it  (more could not be allocated there because the log_dir is sized according to the LOG-Parameters)
    Parameter UTIL_HEAP_SZ = 150.000
Does anybody have an idea, why the crash recovery is so slow ?
    Kind regards,
    Uta

    Hello Ralph,
the needed logfiles were all there and we didn't need to restore any logfiles from tsm (the "active" logfiles, which are needed for crash recovery should always reside in the log_dir...)
At  2008-05-07-14.17.07.357544   crash recovery was completed successfully.
At 2008-05-07-13.56.41.297552   the db has started  archiving to tsm again:
ADM1844I  Started archive for log file "S0003329.LOG".
According to dba collegues the crash recovery were  only 50 % finished and then suddenly  everything was finished. Since the "db2 list utilities" takes forward and backward phase into account for percentage, I assume that the backward phase  was very fast.
The dba collegues  have also recognized, that in the log_dir there were logfiles which were archived to tsm already. So they moved them out of the log_dir, and additional logfiles could be allocated (Before no add. logfile could be allocated). I couldn't say, if this was the reason, why the recovery was finished then afterwards.
The only problem is, that the database doesn't want to archive  Logfiles  S0003329- S0003350. Strange  is also, that logfile 3329 was archived to the FAILARCHPATH yesterday successfully,

  • A fix for the crash problem.

Firefox has been extremely annoying on an XP machine with it's constant crash reports requiring uninstall and reinstall several times till it starts working again. However, periodically repairing Firefox was worth the headache for the benefit of Firefox’s performance. Mozilla Firefox 4.0 Beta 8 was installed hoping it contained the fix for the crash report problem; it didn't. BUT, the new crash report post-mortum file list provides another means to identify a probable cause. The file list was discovered after about the third crash and it was noted that Firefox was attempting to load an internet filter dll file from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM instead of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 which had the correct version. Evidently, the internet filter program update placed the newer version dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and did nothing with the older version dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM or the registry mapping. A copy of the newer version dll was placed in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and it has been smooth sailing with Firefox ever since. Thanks for adding the post –mortum file list; it provided a means to identify and fix the problem. Firefox is working great and the snail’s pace Internet Explorer 8 has been retired. Thanks again!

''Problem:'' For whatever reason, NoScript is stopping Runescape Community Toolbar from working properly which freezes your first Firefox window.
''Fix:'' Uninstall the toolbar. Disable NoScript. Install the toolbar. Add your RS account to it and make sure it works, then Enable NoScript again.
EDIT: Posted a fix earlier that was wrong. Corrected to the right one, sorry ^_^ Answer was on Runescape Forums.

  • Firefox crashed on opening-reported, no response to report-can my Bookmarks be recovered after following various crash recovery recomm?

After downloading supposedly the latest version of Firefox, when a popup window stating "update to the latest Version" believe it was #8.0, & computer restarted, I began having problems. My AVG toolbar was deleted on download restart.
Further problems developed when I went to your website's download link and downloaded the add-on for "Invisible hand" the shopping comparison site that was highly recommended.
On ropening Firefox, I received a window & message that it Crashed--never!!! had this problem in the past with FFox! I reported it several times, via the message box and tried repeatedly to reopen it--even hours later--FFox would only reopen the "Crashed " message box and I again resent the report! However, no response was received from Mozilla since yesterday.
I cannot open FFox--on attempt to open, I only get the "Crashed" mesage box.
I just now went to your website via "IE" and found the Troubleshooting guide and info on "Crashes"--but I am concerned about which "recovery " method to attempt--mainly because of my concern about losing all my "Bookmarks"--many are Business related!
Is there a way to recover my Bookmarks & if so, what is the best recovery method to use?
Background: I am using Windows XP, SP3-- AVG anti-virus (Free Version) and it is/was fully up to date before the Crash occurred. Ad aware and Spy-bot (both free editions) were recently updated before the crash.
    Your Help is most appreciated.
    Regards,
    Michael Diliberto

Both Trusteer Rapport and Roboform are known to cause Firefox 8 to crash, even in Safe Mode.
Do you have '''Trusteer Rapport''' installed? If so, disable it.
    * Windows: "Start->All Programs->Trusteer Rapport->Stop Rapport"
    * Mac: "System Preferences -> Other -> Rapport -> Stop Rapport"
For more help you can ask their helpdesk. <br />

Roboform is also causing Firefox 8 to crash upon startup. Install the latest 7.6.4 version of Roboform. <br />

Also, Firefox 8.0.1 was released 11/22/11 and has a patch for some crashes on Windows, but it's not being pushed as an update to all Firefox 8.0 users on Windows - you need to download it separately and install it yourself. <br />

  • Crash recovery: recreating invalid indexes

I want to discuss a phaenomen, which we often have saw during crash recoveries:
The "startsap db" is hanging, because after the crash recocvery itself is completed (according to db2diag.log), the connection to the database ist still hanging because the database recreate invalid indexes.
    sf503:db2p02 10%  db2 list utilities
    ID                               = 2
    Type                             = RESTART RECREATE INDEX
    Database Name                    = P02
    Partition Number                 = 0
Description                      = Recreating Invalid Index Objects
    Start Time                       = 05/08/2007 09:37:42.721072
Sometimes this can take up to 25 minutes until this is finished and the connect is finished.
    The strange thing is:
If a 2. connection to the database is made during "recreating indexes", this 2. connection is successfull and selects from t000 are successfull.
So, it is possible to execute "startsap r3" while the first connection is still blocked with recreating indexes.
    I don't understand this behaviour:
    - If the database really needs the recreation of invalid index objects  for sucessfull database operation, then it should block ALL connections and not only the first one.
    - If it's not urgently necessary, the database should done the recreating indexes in background and not block the first connection.
Also in the Recovery& High Availibility IBM Handbook I have nothing found about the "recreating  invalid index objects"-feature.
    Kind regards
    Uta

    Hello Jens,
    thanks for the detailed answer!
As you wrote, the only workarond with changing  db cfg parameter from "restart" to "access" needs some manual intervention if  we don't want to risk the limit of maximum dialog runtime. So actually we will leave it as it is. We have a workaround with starting sap in a second window, when  the crash recovery is finished according to db2diag.log and the 1. connection (startsap db) ist still recreating invalid  indexes.
How can one determine the invalid indexes, who need recreation ?
Joachim: we don't have a real problem at our site. Fortunatelly we have crash recoveries only in the rare cases of system crashes, etc. So we are lucky not to have it every day....
Hopefully the behaviour will be changed  to background index recreation in some later DB release.
