Streaks in the monitor

I have diagonal streaks inside the monitor. I can see them almost all the way across the top portion of my screen. I have a 24 inch iMac. Does anyone else have this problem?

It's possible for dirt/smoke to get behind the front glass or even inside the panel. I had them both ways from ocassionally burning incense sticks in the next room. If the stains are brownish it's probably dirt (grayish unregularities will more likely be caused by irregular backlight).
Here's a picture similar to what mine looked like.

However, if you take this kind of problem to Apple, they will most likely refuse a repair based on "environmental" issues (or even smoking, google for "apple warranty smoking").
Since my machine was out of warranty anyway, I decided to take things into my own hands:

  • Water/spit leaves streaks all over the monitor/case

i cleaned my old iMacG4 with a damp cloth (water or spit) and it worked fine. but when i do the same with my new iMac (Intel), it leaves stubborn streaks on the glass/metal, that i must buff out with a soft cloth. why is that? the manual says to use just water to clean the computer case/screen. thanks.

It's because the iMacs have a sheet of glass covering the front of the screen and apparently glass is more susceptible to streaking. You ever try cleaning your windows with just water? I just used a special lcd screen cleaner on mine and had the same problem. I first used the cleaner cloth then the buffer cloth but I couldn't get the streaks out. So I dampened the buffer cloth with water and rubbed the excess cleaner off. Then used a third cloth to polish the streaks out and that worked. I guess the screen cleaner was too concentrated and just needed to be diluted a bit.

  • Odd Display Issue streaking to the right

Hi, I had recently inherited an old mac g4 agp 400mhz with the original ati video card. I'm currently using the hp w2207 widescreen monitor that I use with my pc. I am using the old vga input on it and the DVI input for the PC. The problem I am having is that everything is streaking to the right. Im not sure if the video card is just old or it's an issue with vertical refresh or something. The monitor defaults to 1680 x 1050 60hz. Since the card does not have that setting I have been using switchresX to force the resolution. I do not think that this is what is causing the problem since in any of the old default resolutions still have this problem. I have also updated the drivers with only give me limited setting for opengl. I believe this is a problem with the OS GUI, some sort of shadowing window effect gone wrong. But I cannot find any options to turn it off. I'll try and post a picture..

Hmm flashing PRAM has seemed to help. The streaking is still there but not very visable. Things seem to be getting better as I leave the computer running. Might just be the old electronics needing to warm up a bit. I once had an old moog synth that sat for years and didn't really work when first turned on but if you let it sit for 4 hours and warm up it would be good to go. Thanks everybody for your help

Depends where you got it, if you purchased it at an Apple store call up and make an appointment to save dragging it around, if online contact support, if another outlet take it straight back.

  • Strange images on the monitor. How to fix?

Hi guys. I have an iMac G5 running 10.4.11 that refuses to boot properly. The first problem that we found was with the power supply, we replaced it and even though the computer now actually receives power, it has returned to the previous problem. Currently when the computer is started up, we hear the normal startup sound but the screen remains dark. After a few seconds, the monitor begins to show something, but all it shows is that the left third of the screen is blue with little weird streaks through it, like if somebody tried to draw straight lines but somebody else moved a some of the pixels up or down, resulting in a fragmented line thing. After about a minute of this the left third of the screen changes fast into a crimson color right before there is a large white explosion of color across the whole screen. After that the third of the screen is pink, and the entire top border of the screen constantly flickers. And then, after a minute of this, the fans turn on at full blast.
I have checked the logic board and all the capacitors appear to be in perfect condition, while the power supply obviously had problems. So my question, is there anything else I should try? I really do want to get this fixed rather than buy a whole new computer.

If you have not already, reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, reset SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Be sure to follow the procedure precisely and disconnect all cables. When you re-connect it, if you are using an over-crowded or old power strip (surge suppressor), you may want to connect it directly to the wall outlet, at least initially.

  • I installed a new video card onto my computer...the monitor wont work!!!?

So I got a new GPU (VGA MSI NX8800GT 512M OC RT). I installed it last night and plugged the monitor into it...I know the computer sees it because the LED light turns green, then it goes to sleep. Test with mainboard out of PC case:
Test the motherboard outside of the case to verify that the motherboard is not shorting to the case and causing a problem
         •    With only the CPU and heat sink, memory, and video card (or onboard video) connected to the motherboard, place the motherboard on a non-conductive surface and retest the motherboard
         •    Check the case mounting standoffs to verify that they are lining up correctly with the mounting holes on the motherboard.

  • How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

  • I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

    Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

How to connect an external monitor to macbook pro. The monitor has no usb connecter, only a port.

Most MacBook Pro models have a Mini DVI port, a Mini DisplayPort or a ThunderBolt port for connecting an external display. USB does not have enough bandwidth to support a responsive display connection.
What model MacBook Pro do you have, by year, CPU speed or MacBook Pro 3.1 designation?

  • How to solve the monitor shuffle?  G4, G5, Cinema Display and 2 ViewSonics

Here's a monitor puzzle I'm hoping to get some help with.
    I have two computers- a G4 and a G5.
    COMPUTERS
G4- 1 VGA port, 1 ADC port - video card is ATI rage 128 pro.
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg4/stats/powermac_g4450.html
    G5- 2 DVI ports
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg5/stats/powermac_g5_2.7dp.html
    MONITORS- 1 20" Cinema Display
    - Two 17" LCD Viewsonic VG720 displays. Both monitors have a VGA and DVI output.
*What we need to do is have the Cinema Display on one computer, and the ViewSonics on the other in a 2-monitor setup.* It doesn't matter which monitors go where, as long as they work.
The ViewSonics can't do a simple 2-monitor setup on the G4. One of them can hook up to the VGA port. But the other one can't hook up to the ADC.
But since the ViewSonics are both DVI-compatible, they work great with the G5, with no problems.
This leaves the Cinema Display to be hooked up to the G4. The Cinema display is a DVI, but the G4 is only VGA and ADC. I bought a DVI to VGA adapter and hooked it up to the G4, but no response from the monitor. No luck.
Question 1: Would this work if I bought a DVI to ADC adapter?
    I've seen this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T27 74G/A
... But I don't want to buy it if it won't work either.
    Other scenario:
I hook the Cinema Display up to the G5 (flawless) and try to put the 2 ViewSonics on the G4. One will hook up to the VGA just fine, but then I'm left trying to convert either a DVI or a VGA to the G4's ADC.
Question 2: If I buy an adapter for this purpose, could I do a 2-monitor hookup with a VGA and an ADC on the G4?
    Thanks for helping!
    Owen

    Thanks for your response--
    I looked at this adapter:
    http://www.mycableshop.com/sku/ADCHD1506.htm
    However, it says this:
"The adapter cable allows any VGA monitors to be connected to the new dual-display G4 system with ADC video interface. The VGA monitor can be used as the primary display, or as a second display on G4 that supports dual-monitor support. Compatible with GeForce 4 MX, GeForce 4 Ti, Radeon 7500, and Radeon 9000 Pro."
My graphics card is a ATI Rage 128 Pro. Will it not work, then?
What is the possibility of adapting the Cinema Display from DVI to ADC?
    Thanks!

  • I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

It's almost impossible.  The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that.  Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15.  In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
By the way, I found your answer by searching this forum.  I would suggest using the search function here in the futuere.

  • How do I replace the frame from the monitor on my GX740?

Problem: When I move the hinges on my laptop, sometimes the screen goes black until I move it into a different position, like the light disconnects (in fact, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happens, as I can still see some stuff on the screen; it's just not lit). Having had LCD problems in the past with other machines, I figured "hey, probably just a loose connector, it happens; I should be able to just lock that strip back in place quite easily" (why they don't just make those connectors less prone to falling out - especially ones located in or near hinges - eludes me).
Sure. If I can just get inside the monitor frame. Which it seems I can't. I removed the screws, but when I tried to pull off the plastic frame, it cracked. The plastic frame around my monitor now has visible cracks in it.
So now I need to know not only how to remove this frame, but if possible, also where I can get a replacement for just that one part. I'll gladly take just an answer to the first part and live with the cracked frame as long as I can do something about the loose connector, but if there's an answer to the second part as well, that'd be really neat.
So...how do I remove the frame? Where can I get a new one now that I've ruined this one? Are there spares? Are they expensive?
I'd greatly appreciate a quick answer to the frame removal question, as I intend to bring this computer on a trip overseas and would like the LCD light to not have disconnected completely by the time I arrive, so I'd like to properly attach it before it's time to leave.
I've never had a machine that's so hard to open. This strikes me as quite user-unfriendly design, especially given how little it takes for an LCD connector disconnect, especially one located in the hinge area of a laptop.

  • How can I turn off the monitor but not the computer on my touchsmart 310..

I leave my computer on at night to keep wireless network going, but I want to turn off just the monitor. All of the advice I've seen is to turn off the touchscreen feature -not the monitor itself. Thank you.

You can set the timing for the display to turn off.
    Try this:
    Click:
    Start.
    Control Panel.
    Hardware and Sound.
    Power Options.
On the left bar you'll find Choose when to turn off the display.
At Turn off the display:  there is a drop dowm menu to choose the number of minutes before the display turns off.  Make your selection.
Try that and see if it works for you.
