Streaky healing brush in CS4

I like CS4 and have very few problems with it. But one curious behaviour is that from time to time clicking to create a healing area using the Healing Brush creates a diagonal streak from upper left to lower right as if someone had held down the healing brush (at the beginning of the streak) and pulled the brush diagonally to create the diagonal streak. This happens when the healing area clicked is nowhere near the start of the diagonal streak. Undoing and re-healing a few times usually gets it done ok but it is odd.

Constrained strokes? You know, when you accidentally hold down Shift...

  • CS4 spot healing brush

When I use the spot healing brush or the healing brush, the actual output is a tiny spot in the center of the round brush cursor. It doesn't matter what size the brush is; it still outputs just a point in the center of the round cursor. It's driving me crazy!
My paint brush was doing the same thing until I turned off the Shape Dynamics.
    Settings:
Clone Source > Show overly (unchecked)
    Clone Source > Clipped (unchecked)
Brushes > Shape dynamics (unchecked, locked)
PS CS4, Mac Pro, OSX 10.5, 10G RAM
    Thanks for your help.

This is the healing and spot healing brush or tool if you wish.
This not a bad feature request and perhaps a brilliant one Phil, to have the healing and spot healing and patch tool to have the option to heal on a separate layer so you never actually do anything to the original with these tools and give you a chance to edit what you have done with the eraser and history brush, opacity settings and mode blending.
Also a chance to redefine the edges of the healed or patch regions. It's an outstanding inspiration. You set the reference and then when you start using the tool it creates a layer if you need yet another layer you hold down a key combination and a new layer associated with
future use of the tool is on that layer unless you hod down a key combination that sets you back to the previous layer.
This is just a wonderfully delightful ingenious impulse.

  • CS4 - crash with healing brush

Again, today, I have the spinning beach ball after using the healing brush on a 489 MB image.
I have to restart the MacPro (OS 10.5.6) and - of course -I will lose the last 15 minutes of work. I can't afford to save every 60 seconds, and this is a repeated crash event for me.
How do I get a Photoshop crash report to see what is wrong?
I can look at the Mac's console report after I restart - is that the only way?

    Richard,
Still not sure what you did. Did you buy the complete CS 4 Suite, but just wish to install Photoshop and Dreamweaver from that Suite?
If so, maybe the solution is to completely uninstall all previous versions of Adobe software, run system maintenance, and do a fresh install Photoshop CS4 and Dreamweaver CS4 alone. No need to install CS2 or CS3 again -- just use their serial numbers when prompted.
    >I seem to recall reading that Adobe designed it so that you can only upgrade from a suite to the next ENTIRE suite package - and not upgrade individual programs. That's just what I tried to do - CS3 creative suite to Photoshop CS4 - and the result is a big mess.
But, if you just bought the two individual apps, and not the Suite, you did not upgrade Suite to Suite. A single application is not an upgrade path from a previous Creative Suite -- only a Suite to Suite upgrade is, although you don't have to install all CS4 components. If this is what you did, then you need to call Adobe and see if they'll work something out. A friend of mine was able to install a Photoshop CS4 upgrade (he has the complete CS3 Suite) -- but only after an exasperating three hours on the phone with Adobe somewhere in downtown India.
    >Can we just bundle Photoshop and Dreamweaver - for the countless photographers who have websites
But Dreamweaver is probably far more overkill here than Photoshop is.

  • Healing Brush not working in CS4.

    Hello,
The Healing Brush in my copy of CS4 has always been a problematic tool.
Some times it worked and sometimes it didn't.
    Now it never works.
Can anyone please help me to get it working properly?
    Thanks for your consideration,
    cobaltgreen

Maybe you misunderstand the function of the healing brush. There are two healing brushes. One is an automatic brush that you can click on a spot, and it will attempt to automatically heal that spot. The other is like the clone stamp, except it attempts to repair the copied pixels to match the destination. Do neither functions work for you?

  • CS4 Healing Brush is leaving grey instead of sourced color

I'm having trouble with the CS4 Healing Brush. In the past, when I used the alt key to source the flesh color of a person's face and then applied it to another area to even out what I had already cloned with the cloning brush, it always worked great. But now the healing brush lays down a greyish color, totally ruining the flesh color. I'm wondering if I accidentaly hit a key somewhere and changed a setting. I can't find anything that alters the color of the healing brush. And anyway, it should be the color I choose with my alt key.
Someone, please help! I used my healing brush a lot, in conjunction with my cloning tool and It has always been very successful up to now.

Yes, I did have the mode set to something else - luminosity. I changed it to normal and it works! Thanks for your help.  I must have been experimenting with something else recently and forgot to change it back).
    Thanks again!

  • CS4 Healing Brush Preview

Hello, using CS4 on Mac Snow Leopard, I have lost the function to see the effects of the healing brush within the circle, prior to it being applied. Can anyone advise on what might be wrong?. Re-setting the tool does ot help.
    Thanks.

Thanks......OK, found it, and checked the 'show overlay' box. This brought up a duplicate image, laid over the original, not the 'effect preview' within the healing circle.
So frustrating, this feature was the only reason I upgraded to CS4!.
    Cheers.

  • Healing brush/clone stamp cursor is dark.

I hope I've overlooked something very simple.  In CS3 on my PC, the circular cursor for healing brush and clone stamp (probably others, too) is always a contrasting color to the underlying image so the circle is always very visible.  With the same preferences set, CS4 always has a very dark, perhaps black circular cursor, so that in dark areas, it completely disappears, making it difficult to select the correct area.
Just me, my PC or CS4?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the answer.
I have not mentioned the GPU because the processes I described (as far as I know) are not supposed to be using GPU resources. So far I have not been able to afford the GPU i want which is GTX770, so I use Intel 4600 built in graphics instead. To be honest I find, that 4600 graphics is quite powerful. I am able to play Mass Effect 3 on Full spec on max res without game slowing down. And Windows 7 64bit index score is 7.8 for the 4600 graphics. Overall index score is 7.8 on my PC righ now.
I'll try to get the Photoshop system info as soon as possible.
    Thanks again.

  • CS5 Healing brush & Clone tool Strange Problems

When I option click a sample point to heal or clone, then release the mouse or pen, the sampled area remains in the brush diameter even though I haven't healed or cloned anything yet.  Just moving the mouse or pen around includes the image of the sampled area all over the image.  What gives?
Wasn't always like this, just last few days.  For example if I select and area with lips on a face, then move the brush to the cheek, the image of the lips remains in the brush area.  Very frustrating.  Any help would be much appreciated.  This is with both the healing brush and clone stamp tools.
    Mac OS 10.6.3, MacPro 2 X 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel 16GB ram NVIDIA GE-Force 8800 GT graphics card running CS5 in 32 bit mode.

That is a preference that was added in Photoshop CS4 to preview the cloned area (makes it easier to align).
Go to the Clone Source palette, and turn off "Show Overlay" if you don't want to see the preview.
You might want to take some time to read up on the Clone Source palette, and the options it offers -- it can really speed up a lot of common cloning tasks.

  • Healing brush Mode Resetting - CS5

In CS5, the mode for the healing brush is resetting anytime I change to a tool other than one in the healing group (e.g., spot healing, red eye, etc.).
This happens even with temporary tools changes...for example, in Healing Brush, I set the mode to Replace, press and hold Z for Zoom and when I release the key, I'm back to healing but the mode is set back to Normal!
Am I missing a setting somewhere?  This didn't happen with CS4 and doesn't seem to happen with any other brush-based tools.
    Thanks.

    I should add, I'm running CS5 in Windows 7 64-Bit.

  • Photo moves while using spot healing brush

I've been using the spot healing brush basically on every photo but recently when I go to use it and press Option to get a clone source and then click my mouse the photo will move everywhere the mouse moves and not allow for a touch up.
It doesn't matter if I'm clicking the mouse the whole time or not, it just happens when i click once while using the healing brush.
I've tried reseting work space reseting my computer everything and I'm just desperate right now to figure out how to fix it.
because my latest photo shoot is of a young girl covered in acne and the spot healing brush is the best when it comes to making it blend.
i've asked everyone i know who uses photoshop and they have no idea. I can't be the only person this has happened to.

I guess you meant the healing brush? (the clone overlay is not supposed to be active with the
    spot healing brush)
If your using cs4/cs5, check Clipped or Auto Hide in the clone source panel (Window>Clone Source) and see if that's better.

  • Spot Healing Brush Shape Dynamics?

Is it possible to change the shape dynamics of the Spot Healing Brush Tool?  I see where to on any of the other brush tools but not for this.
    Using Photoshop CS4.
    Thanks,
    Wesley

use can change the brush shape to an oval and rotate it as well as change the size. but you can't use the brush panel with all the fancy stuff.

  • Spot healing brush alignment problem

Using Photoshop CS4 (11.0) on a Mac with 10.5.6. Sometimes the spot healing brush works as expected. However, after working for a while, the alignment seems to be off--I hover the cursor over the spot I want to retouch, but when I click the mouse the area retouched is a bit (1/4" or so) below the spot healing brush cursor. If I quite and restart Pshop the problem goes away. This is with the spot healing brush--not the one where you need to select where to clone from. Is something wrong, or is there a new feature I don't know about that's causing this? I've used the spot healing brush quite a bit with CS3.
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate hearing them. This is getting frustrating.

I think you are talking about a different issue here. This problem is not specific to the spot healing brush.
@ OP: The brush alignment problem is very real and I have it frequently when working with larger files (approximately >500MB in memory). I have two macs, a macbook (GMA X3100) and a mac pro (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT). So two completely different hardware arrangements that have the exact same problem. This is clearly not a problem with graphics cards.
Drawing with any tool like: brush (any brush - dodge/burn, blur, eraser etc.), lasso (any lasso), line, crop tool etc. will result in a misalignment of about 0,5 cm directly downward. However, clicking on menus and dialogue boxes works as expected. Switching off OpenGL features in PS WILL NOT PREVENT THE PROBLEM (if I shout, maybe Adobe will hear...). The same problem appears whether I'm using a Wacom tablet or a mouse. It even appears when the Wacom driver is uninstalled.
So, if Adobe is not acknowledging the problem it's safe to assume it will be featured in CS5 as well.
@ Jim: Sorry, I would have posted in the other thread but your link does not work anymore.

  • Clone Stamp and Healing brush problem, please help!

Hi there, I'm new to the forum but I have been using Adobe creative suite for quite some time now.  As the thread title describes, I'm having an issue with my photoshop clone stamp and healing brush tool that I can't seem to fix on my own. I searched the internet all day, scrolling over many other posts but I can't seem to find anyone else who is having similar issues like I am having here.
This is kinda hard to explain but the issue I am having, is that when I go to use either my clone stamp or healing brush tool, the layer I am working on whether it is a flattened background or normal editable layer, get shifted as soon as I press the option key to make a selection and then when I go to move to the area to use these tools it acts like I've duplicated the entire layer and drags it around the screen, even though no such copy and paste has been made.  All of my other tools are working normally and I wasn't having this issue last time I worked on anything in photoshop.
    I am running:
    a Mac OSX 10.5.8
    CS4 extended version 11.0.2
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Your probably seeing the clone source overlay.
Go to Window>Clone Source and either uncheck:
Show Overlay for no overlay or check clipped to show the overlay
clipped to the size of the brush.

  • Healing Brush "skips", leaves a line of brush-sized circles instead of a smooth line

When I use the healing brush is tends to "skip".  It leaves a line of circles like a stamp would instead of a flowing line like it should leave.  No matter how slow I move the brush it leaves a circle and then as I continue to draw nothing happens until I reach the edge of the first circle, it then drops another circle and it continues that way as long as I draw with it.   The brush tool works fine, leaves a smooth line.  The Spot Healing and Patch Tool work fine but the healing brush will not heal in a smooth stroke.  It skips along a leaves a tail of circles the size of the brush.  I am using a fast computer, i7 processor, 16bg ram and a SSD drive so I do not think speed is an issue.  I upgraded from CS4 where the healing brush worked fine on this computer

If the spacing of a tool's brush is 100% then it will behave as you described.
Reduce the spacing to get a stroke without circles.
Reset Tool as shown by R_Kelly will set the spacing to 25%, but it'll also reset the size and hardness of the brush and reset other options of the tool.

  • Healing Brush use has a grey smudgy cast

I am using CS4, rev 11.0.2, on a Win XP Pro, SP3 system with 2GB of ram. I use the healing brush, with normal mode, sampled, aligned, and set to current layer, because that is where I am working,
I Alt-click to set a sample point in an area with no obvious cast. I then go to heal a nearby area by left clicking and painting with one pass through the area to be healed. The area looks healed until I release the left mouse button. The area's healed color then takes on a grayish cast, although otherwise it has been "healed". The imperfections are gone, but the area appears grayish.
What am I doing wrong. I reset the Preferences, but that did not help.
    Reed

I don't think I want the Clone Stamp tool (I tried it and it does seem to help.) I am trying to follow a Kelby video tutorial titled "Mastering Layers in CS4" by Matt Kloskowski (spelling?) and am working on lesson 20, Retouching with Layers. As nearly as I can see from the video, my settings are the same as his, except he does not get the gray cast, and I do.
