Stream 7 dropping lots of packets only when unplugged

Hi:
I have a new Stream 7/ windows 8.1 and I'm having serious problems with dropped packets.  I lose about 45% of the packets when it's unplugged and only about 1% when it's plugged it.  I really noticed it with a UDP app I use which is essentially non functional when the stream is unpllugged, and works OK then it's powered up.  The battery is near 95%.
I wrote a batch file that pings my router every second.  the pings come back in 2 ms for a few seconds and then the pings fail for about 3 seconds,  the cycle repeats forever.  I try the same test from another device and it does not fail.
I checked and the driver is current, and there are no updates available.
It's got the realtec RTL8723BS.   driver 3007.6.901.2104 which windows says is current. I haven't loaded any software yet as I just got it this morning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So it appears the the stream just doesn't work with access points that don't support WMM (wifi protocall for power management) if it's unplugged from power.  I even went and manually created a power plan using pwrcfg where all of the settings are the same plugged in and unplugged, still not good but better.
with the standard power plan, i get a success rate of 30%,  unplugged and 100% when plugged in
with the modified plan, I get a success rate of 65% unplugged and 100% when plugged in
This is unfortunate as the intent was to have machiine maintenance people query machine equipment we have which each have thier own hotspot they use for data.  because the protocall they use is UDP, this loss rate makes the stream unuseable.  toobad, because I really like it otherwise
edit: i disabled the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant control method   Battery  - - and everythign works....

I've just spent a fustrating 15 minutes with Bt Support chat who just seemed want to pass me on to the BT Business team, so I thought I'd post here, for a more informed response.

Hi Jane, Thanks for the reply. I have now purchased an AEBS(n) to try to overcome this problem. The Apple site says it is compatible with all versions of Airport card so I thought it would solve the problem. My new problem is to be found here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1087292&tstart=0
However to answer your questions, The OS is 10.4.10 and I have run every updater I can find for all Macs concerned. hope this helps.

Our notebook will shut completely down if the it is unplugged.  It will work for awhile then just shut off.  you can restart it and it will say it did not shut down properly and boot back up, but then shut off randomly a little while later.  Already replaced the battery and it is always more than half charged when it happens.  If the cord is plugged in it will stay on no problem. Help!

  • X61 Freezes, but only when unplugged

My X61 freezes almost every time I unplug it from AC power.  This never happens when the computer is plugged in.
In other words, soon after unplugging it, it locks up.  Cursor spins but no response.  Doesn't matter what application is running, even happens in just Explorer.
I thought I had it solved after turning down the disk shock sensitivity, but after a recent update to the Lenovo applications, the problem is back (yes, I set the disk shock back to low sensitivity).
This is maddening and has wasted countless hours of valuable work.
LENOVO!!! Are you listening?  You're about to lose a long time faithful customer.  This is unacceptable!!  Fix it!

That sounds really frustrating. I haven't heard of a problem like that before.
Maybe your power management software is borked, and it is causing this freeze when running on battery. You could try re-installing the power management software.
If you want support directly from Lenovo, I suggest calling them directly. This is mainly a user to user support forum with occasional fly by's from Lenovo staff, and is not a formal support channel.

  • Macbook Pro 17" (Mid-2009) Randomly Getting Stuck in Sleep Mode when Unplugged

Hey guys, this is my first time posting so please excuse me if I do anything wrong. Here's the issue:
I have a Macbook Pro 17" (Mid-2009) that has had an issue with the whole computer shutting down at random, but only when unplugged from the MagSafe power adapter. Upon scouring all the forums and discussions I could, I haven't found anyone with the same exact circumstances as myself, hence this post. Let me explain.
Many say it's a battery issue. That can't be, because this has been happening for months, and after I finally got my laptop repaired a few days ago, it still occurs. I had sent it in for a logic board failure, but consented them to fix any other parts that weren't functioning properly. Upon the return of my machine, I found that they installed a fresh hard drive, new battery, new logic board, and a new speaker on the right side. This must mean that neither the logic board nor the battery are the issue.
What else can this point to? Again, it only occurs when the Mac is unplugged from a power source, and it doesn't totally shut down. It goes half way, essentially stuck in sleep mode. The white indicator light on the front freezes, and the power button has to be held to fully turn the laptop off, then pressed again to reboot. It can last anywhere from a single minute to a few hours before shutting off again, and it's always the exact same circumstance, no matter what kind of computing I'm doing at the time.
Note that while no one else has found the solution to lie within resetting the PRAM or SMC (in the discussions I read), I still need to try that tonight and see if it affects anything.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sean

Macs are having problems with SSD drives. The root cause is the OS X journaling file system. The Apple-written SATA controller driver can saturate the bus at times, inhibiting performance. Some manufactures are even selling special "Mac" versions of their SSD drives that are slowed down on purpose to compensate for this problem. Unfortunately, the problem still exists in Snow Leopard, from what I've read.
Also, I read that Apple has secretly slowed the recent new laptops down (3.0GB/s to 1.5GB/s) to compensate for the problem.

  • Hp mini 110-3000, unexpectedly shutdown when unplugged. Pass the "battery test" !

    Hi,
My HP mini 110-3000 acts up recently.
    It randomly shuts down.
    Only when unplugged. (On battery)
    No error message shown.
This happens when battery power is around 60%
It's definetly not thermal, the netbook lasts forever when plugged in. (unless running on battery makes it hotter ???)
But it doesn't feel any hotter. It's just warm to the touch, normal.
I also did the battery test as suggested, says that everything is fine.
Worked fine just a month ago.
The battery would drain normally, with warning message around 12% then sleep around 9%.
Now, it shuts down around 60%.
It was bought less than 19 months ago... I would expect something a longer lifetime.
    Any hint would help.
    Thank you
    Etienne

19 months is on the short side but in the range of normal battery longevity. Given your description it is extemely unlikely to be anything other than it just needs a new battery.

My macbook shut off and wont turn back on. Im pretty sure it is charging. The LED light is on but only when the laptop is closed. Im in grad school and have lots saved. Please Help!

    ronicr76,
First it would be helpful if you post the exact model, year and OS version you have.
    > The LED light is on but only when the laptop is closed<
So that light is the sleep indicator and tells us that the laptop is going to sleep when you close the lid. That would be normal behavior so the machine is still working. Possibly you're experiencing a backlight failure. With the machine supposedly "on" use a flashlight to carefully examine the screen. Do you see the desktop? Yes? machine is still running and something is wrong with the backlight.
You should immediately backup your computer or at the very least pull vital files off. With the computer hooked to another Mac (The way this is done depends on the exact MacBook, E.g.FireWire 800 to FireWire 800.) Then you restart the computer and hold the "t" key down. This puts your MacBook into "target mode":
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
Once your files are off try an SMC reset:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Are you able to get the backlight back on by opening and closing the display? Yes? Broken backlight cable refer to qualified service place. Even if it doesn't come on and you can still see the desktop with a flashlight it is still probably the backlight. Could be the a backlight problem also.

  • White noise, sort of packet loss when talking with...

    Hi,
For some unknown reason when I talk with one specific person the call doesn't exactly drop out it sort of cuts the audio and gives me white noise (sort of like when you get packet loss when transferring files or gaming), I have 0 idea why it does it. Does it the reverse as well, but only for me and this person. Everyone else thats in the call doesn't get effected and its frustrating me.

When in a call goto call > Technical info. This will show you various info about the call connection (and a lot of useless info aswell). Amongst the info is packet loss, and relays (if relays = more than 0 you are not directly connected).
Being on the same Skype, version might help.

  • Airport express streaming audion drop out is unacceptable

The only reason I bought the airport express is because apple discontinued the old Apple TV mk1 - which had an analogue audio out port.
The comments on this group seem to always suggest the following (1) Don't extend a wireless group (2) Don't join a WDS (3) Upgrade firmware (4) choose a less congested channel (4) swing a dead cat around 12 times at midnight.
    So the configuratioon
MAC BOOK PRO Snow leopard 10.6.4 -- 2.6Ghx INTEL Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667 Mhz DDR SDRAM
    2 Airport Extremes [7.4.2]
    1 Airport Express [7.4.2]
1 Time Capsule [7.5.1] (making a total of 3 Airport Extremes)
    iTunes 10.0.1 (22)
MAC BOOK PRO disk checks out perfectly - format structure, file structure and hard disk sectors.
All Airport devices are at the latest firmware revision.
no WDS - each Airport Extreme "Creates A Wireless Network" - but uses the Time Capsule for DNS.
THE AIRPORT EXPRESS IS SET TO "NO WIRELESS"
The connection to the Airport Express is 100BaseTX via an intelligent router.
So - basically - NO WIRELESS CONNECTION to the Airport Express from the MAC BOOK.
MAC BOOK PRO -> (100BaseTX) Intelligent Cisco Router -> (100BaseTX) Airport Express
Every 4 or 5 minutes the sound will drop out for a second or so - right in the middle of a song.
The Airport Express has even been configured for NO WIRELESS.
Streaming Netflix to the TV makes no difference to the time between audio drop out - which suggest that the network is more than capable of handling the traffic.
Netflix also streams perfectly to the iPad (Wireless)
Network utilization is negligible. Network reliability seems excellent : 90M Sent packets, 70M Recv Packets ZERO errors ZERO collisions.
I noticed that when I use the iPad for remote control (V2) of iTunes on the MAC BOOK PRO - the drop out is worse (even when the iPad is not doing anything other than, I suppose answering a few "are you still there" inquiries). Interestingly, even with the iPad connected - but - control of iTunes from the Keyboard - the interval between drop outs is significantly greater.
I have not yet tried streaming the AppleTV Mk1 to the Airport Express - my bet is that it will stream perfectly.
It amazing that Netflix can stream perfect video and sound over a 20Mb internet connection (using the same Extreme as the primary DNS ie attached to the Time-Warner modem) and yet Apple cant even get consistent audio in a hard wired 100Mb intranet.
At the low data rates for streaming Audio - finding way to configure the Airport Express to effectively improve its response time hint at a significantly larger issue ie (a) iTunes not running at a sufficiently high priority (b) Small Internal buffer in the Airport Express (c) my guess both (a) and (b)
iTunes is set to "Large Buffer".
I have not yet tried 'nice'ing up the priority of any iTunes processes - as I've gone back to having the house Audio driven by my old reliable Apple TV Mk1.
If Apple cant even get Audio Streaming working properly - I don't hold out much hope for the AppleTV Mk2 (hopefully it has a seriously large buffer to compensate for the pre-emptive scheduling of MAC OS) - This may be one example of Windows being a better streaming Audio Platform that MAC OS.
Given all this information - other than "kill all the processes running on the MAC" - which completely defeats the purpose - that is to say - I had a perfectly great Streaming Audio "Appliance" (the Mk1 AppleTV) - now I'm being forced to use a GP Computer with all the inherent problems of reliability.
    Any suggestions ?

No, in fact I abandoned it. Then I tried it again today, (hoping the various iTunes updates would help) it was better ... But after 15 minutes the audio dropped out again. However, my concerns about the apple tv2 were unfounded.

  • I have one random Apple ID that appears only when I go to itunes or App Store.  For everything else I have my Apple ID and password all set.  Can I get rid of this thing?

This is a Question:  I have one random Apple ID that comes up only when I'm trying to access Apps or iTunes.  I have another Apple ID with a password that works just fine for everything else.  I do not have a password for this random id.  How can I get rid of it?  I can't perform updates is the big issue.

Jonathan:This seems to make a lot of sense.  My only follow up question is:  will I have any trouble getting iTunes and
    Apps back?
Will apple charge me?  I really can't remember clearly, but it seems to me that iTunes and Apps were present on the
iPad2 that was given to me as a gift, but I could be mistaken.
If I am all clear for getting those two stores back with an easy selection, then I will use your solution.
Have a great season, my friend- this was driving me nuts!  Thank you so much!

Should I just export my bookmarks, uninstall and reinstall the proper version? That may just be shorter than anything else.

GREAT!. Thanks a lot for educating me. There seem to be a million things we have to learn about our computers and when we run into them the first time they seem insurmountable. You pointed me to the solution. Thanks again. Ben
