Stream sound from Macbook Pro to another device?

So my headphone jack just half-died on me. I get full sound from the right ear, but the left one has little to no sound coming through. I've had headphone jack issues in the past with my macbook pro and they said I needed to replace the entire motherboard last time which was extremely expensive. My warranty has run out so doing that again would not be feasible, yet I really need the headphone jack to be working since much of my work is video/audio intensive. Is there any way I could stream audio to another device like my phone or something via bluetooth and plug headphones into that to get full sound in both ears? Or is there a fix to this issue that I don't know about? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Macbook Pro 13-inch (early 2010)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
10 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

You can stream audio via airtunes to an Airport express which has an analogue ouput jack, but it's line level and doesn't have a volume control, but you can use it as the source for a hifi.  You can get third party powered speakers which receive airtunes.  You can stream audio and video to an Apple TV but it only has an optical Tosslink audio out and audio and video out via hdmi.
You can also get sound out via USB to a an offboard D/A converter which in most cases would be line-level, though you could likely find asomething with a headphone output with a volume control.
If you look up the specs on your machine you might also find you have digital audio out via tosslink and the headphone jack which is misbehaving as the ports are combined on some models.  Then there is the mini display port which can in some cases output both sound and audio and you can get a long display port to hdmi cable a lot cheaper than an ATV.
But, while the headphone jack replacement involves a motherboard swap, in reality, what might have happened is that a solder joint for the socket on the motherbord has failed and simply resoldering the joint would fix the issue.  If the internals of the socket like a contact breaking or being damaged is the problem then the MB would likely need replacing given the cost of labour for a tech to source and replace the whole socket.

I'm using a MacBook Pro 8.2 and want to stream video to à Sony Bravia TV. I've connected them with à cable from the Thunderbolt port to the HDMI port on the TV. I get the video images but no sound. Is there à way to do this or do I need à separate audio cable?

There is great risk of confusion since I am seeing the words in Swedish and it is sometimes difficult to tell what the translation should be, but here goes:
In the System Report there is only one topic with the word sound: "Sound (built-in)"
Under that topic it says "Intel HD Sound" and I can choose a nummer of options, but only one for "Speakers" and it says "Connection: internal"
There is also an option for "HDMI/DisplayPort" which says "Connection: screen" (or monitor)

  • Streaming Netflix from Macbook Pro to TV

    Hello,
I would like to stream movies from Netflix on the Macbook Pro to my TV. I bought a Moshi Mini Displayport to HDMI Adapter and plugged into the laptop. I then removed the HDMI cable from my DVD player and plugged it into the adapter. I followed the directions in the set up guide to go to "Sound" in System Preferences to change output to "Built in HDMI Output", but nothing appears and I can't stream on to my tv. Any ideas how to stream or what I might be doing wrong?
    Thanks.
    lsb

This may be a bit off your topic... I cannot get Netflix to stream any video. I have installed Silverlight and for some reason it keeps telling me to install it. Did you have any trouble with the installation of Silverlight? I have also purchased the cable, but I am still stuck on getting it installed...

  • How to stream content from Macbook Pro to Samsung SmartTV

How can I view photos from iPhoto on my Macbook Pro on my Samsung SmartTV?  Samsung offers software only for PCs.

If you have satellite/cable TV and your box has an ethernet port and you have a DVR it's also possible to stream content from your Mac to a tv.

  • Streaming video from Macbook Pro to 46 inch LCD

I am trying to stream video from my 13 inch Macbook Pro to my 46 inch Samsung LCD TV. I am using a HDMI cable to a DVI cable to attach the computer. When I play videos from iTunes, the picture looks great, however when I am streaming video from an internet site such as Netflix, the picture is not great (it almost looks pixilated). I am wondering, is this an issue with my computer (video card, etc) or does it have to do with my internet connection (I currently have the lower DSL connection)? Is there any other way to make the picture look better? Thanks for your help.

  • Stream dvd from macbook pro late 2013 to tv

Can I stream a dvd from my macbook pro using usb superdrive to tv?  I have a thunderbolt to usb connector.  What else do i need?

    Hello janet159,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact configuration you are describing. If you are able to play a DVD on your MacBook Pro using the external SuperDrive, you most likely should be able to play it on your TV by connecting your MacBook Pro to your TV via HDMI, as noted in this article:
Note: DVD Player does not support playback using AirPlay Mirroring. If you want to watch your DVD on an HDTV, connect your Mac to your TV using an HDMI cable or a video adapter.

  • Random tick sound from MacBook Pro (noticed it since updating to 10.6)

    Hi,
I have the 2.4Ghz Unibody MacBook Pro 15" (Early 2009) with the removable battery.
I went through a clean install of Snow Leopard, up to date with all the updates (10.6.1). Ever since I have been hearing random ticks. At first I thought it was the hard drive. But it's too loud for the hard drive, and it sounds like its coming from the right speaker.
A break down of the possibilities:
    - Hard Drive
    - Left Speaker
    - Bug in Snow Leopard
    - Fan
What do you guys think? Anyone else experiencing this?

If you had a cloned copy of your Leopard (not Snow Leopard) disk (everyone should have a backup of their disk on an external drive) you could boot from it. This would rule in or out the OS as the culprit.
If you do ot have said copy (for shame, for shame) maybe you can boot with the install DVD and determine the same thing.
I have the mid '09 15". I can remove the belly pan and see the entire fan. Can you do this with your model to determine if the fan is making the noise? Can you install some fan control software that will allow you to speed the fan up and thus determine if the fan is the noisemaker?
Will turning the speaker audio OFF have any affect on the noise? Will putting a piece of cardboard over the speaker grill affect the noise?

  • No sound from Macbook Pro after restart or sleep

I know there are a lot of threads on this type of issue, but I haven't found a way to solve my problem.
    My computer:
    Late 2008 MBP 15" OSX 10.9.5
Whenever I shutdown or sleep the computer, the sound does not work when I start it up or wake it up. The startup sound does not play, and the audio controls are not greyed out. Audio does not work through headphones either. Plugging in and unplugging headphones does not solve the problem.
Sometimes a PRAM reset will solve the problem, and an SMC reset always brings the audio back, but only until I shut it down or put it to sleep again.
Any help in finding a permanent solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hello CoDean,
Continue your troubleshooting with the article below to assist with the issue of not sound on your MacBook Pro. Look at the headphone jack to see if there is a red light coming from there as well as looking in System Preferences > Sound to see if the output is stuck on digital out.

I am afraid it still does not work.

  • Weird sound from MacBook Pro 2011

I have a weird sound that occasionally occurs from my Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro. The sound comes from the left side of the base, towards the hinge. The timing is random, usually when sitting by itself idle with the lid open. It has occured when the charging cable is both connected and disconnected. Performing a restart does not cause it to stop, it will continue thru the restart. Shutting down completely does shut it up, but it'll likely appear shortly after booting up. Closing the lid of the MBP will shut up the sound, and if left closed for a couple hours, the sound doesn't appear for awhile.
The sound itself is pretty loud, and can easily drown out my TV when it kicks in. I don't think it's the fan, as I've heard the fan on full tilt and it's still quiet, unlike this noise I am referring to. Plus, the fan is located in the center against the hinge, not on the left where the noise is coming from. I tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM, no luck. I did record the sound with my cell phone, here is a video of it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgutF9bZilI
If anyone has an idea of what is causing this sound, please help. Thank you.

Does the sound, or it's basis, interfere with operation of the MBP in any way?  When the lid is closed it is in sleep mode so one would expect the sound to stop then.
Best thing might be a visit to the Apple store genius bar to have the techs test it.

  • Odd alert sound from Macbook Pro Retina

Hi, my 13-in MacBook Pro Retina is late 2013 version installed with OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
Recently, every now and then there will be a "ding" tone that sounds.
I have checked. I do not have any alerts on nor is it the incoming email alert.
I also could not find this sound under the sound alerts menu.
    Anyone can be of help?

sorry to hear about your problems. Try running Audio MIDI, see what's it's set it for both the line out/digital out. Holding down the Alt Key (next to the space bar) gets you a list of all the input and output devices on your macbook pro. Also, see if accessibility is turned on under system preferences.  Other than that, I can't say. if you have wifi problems, see if there's an update for it (airport?) or see if you can change  Wi-ifi channels on your printer
    well, I tried anyways

  • No sound from MacBook Pro

Last week, I tried to play music through my MacBook Pro. No sound is coming from either my internal speakers OR my headphone jack. I feel like I read a million threads but none of them seem to apply to my issue. In my Settings>Sound it still displays my "Internal Speakers - Built-in" as the sound output. When I try to adjust the volume, the icon appears normally on the screen. There is no line through it, or simply doesnt work, as other users have posted. I have no red light shining from my headphone jack. Headphones also do not work. Everything (software Wise) seems to be set up exactly as it should be, but still no sound! Could this be a hardware issue? From the time my sound worked to when it stopped working my MBP was just sitting on my desk! Not sure what else to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Asher,
Sorry for the delay in response. Thankfully, a tech person with whom I work discovered the update, so I am not totally sure. I think that she simply switched my software update schedule to every day (instead of weekly), and the firmware was simply part of an update package that was waiting for me. Sorry that this isn't too helpful. I'll try harder to remember to ask her how exactly she accessed the update.
    Kindly,

  • Can I direct all sound from MacBook Pro to Airport, not just iTunes

Hi, want to be able to choose AirPort for all audio out from my MacBook Pro, not just iTunes. Is that possible? For example I would like to stream YouTube music via AirPort...
    Any help is most appreciated.
    /R

    Hi!
Thx for answer. However, I can not choose AirPort the way you described, only "internal speakers or Thunderbolt/external monitor speakers". Seems like it's only in iTunes one can choose AirPort output. I would like to play all aduio out via AirPort.

  • Streaming video from macbook pro to apple tv

Hello, I understand that you can use airdisplay to stream the whole desktop view to the apple tv. However, I've found that its extremely laggy when I play videos that way. When I do, the video and sound is always off by a second. When I stream using my ipad or iphone to play videos that never happens and runs perfectly. Is there a way to just stream videos from sites like youtube for the mac like the iphone and ipad?

  • How to output sound from MacBook Pro to stereo receiver/amplifier?

Does anyone here know what I would need to buy to send audio from my MacBook Pro to an external integrated stereo amplifier? I'm sure there's something. I'd like best quality so if you know of a USB solution please let me know.

Typo above, 'headphone port' not 'headphone post.'
Glad to help, and thanks for the !
FYI, the mic port is the same, so if you have a need to get digital audio into your MBP, the mic port will do that as well as analog.
The headphone port actually does triple-duty, in that it's both analog and digital out, and with the longer plug found on the iPhone headset, the headphone port can also function as an analog input.
