Streaming audiophile quality from iTunes - mac hardware limitations?

I listen to a lot of classical music and have recently been experimenting with commercial 24 bit/96 kHz and 24 bit/192 kHz FLAC files converted and imported into iTunes using Max, as AIFF or Apple lossless files (there are some recent issues apparently related to Snow Leopard that make this a bit more clunky than it was, discussed in the Max forum)
The files are appropriately huge (9000+kbs for AIFF 96/192 files) which should keep all the bats and dogs in the neighbourhood happy if I had the appropriate gear for playing it. I have recently been looking at various hardware (Naim and Linnwood most recently) but their dedicated ways of playing back the music are very clunky if you are used to iTunes - i have no wish to change.
However It is possible to directly stream digital (at a max of 24/96 for Naim and 24/192 for Linnwood which looks good - with the very minor disadvantage of no display of track info on the units themselves.
But this raises several questions:
1) What are the hardware limits for digital out on modern macs (the computers, not iPhones or iPods) - can they really stream 24bit at 96 or 192 kbs? Or do they downscale, to 24/48 (i think) like the Squeezebox?
2) I believe that anything over 24/48 is not very practical over wireless (and I already know that Airport express in any case has a limit of CD quality 16 bit). Of the alternatives, eithernet is possible with some sound systems and presumably distance between computer and music system is not likely to be a problem. But - question 2 - are there practical limits on distance for wire and/or optical digital connections from computer digital out to sound system?
Cheers
Malcolm

You don't mean kb/s - this is the bitrate, used with formats such as MP3 where the bitrate can be specified. You mean the sampling rate, which is specified in kHz. 192 kb/s is pretty mediocre quality for stereo. The bitrate for CD quality is 705.6 kb/s, for 96 kHz 24-bit is 2.3 Mb/s - these are dependent on the sampling rate and bit depth and are not further configurable, so are not usually quoted for uncompressed audio. (An actual CD has a higher bitrate because of the extra bits required for the strong error correction.)
CD quality is 44.1 kHz; 96kHz is the usual maximum. The maximum setting in Audio-MIDI Setup on my 2008 iMac is 96 kHz 24-bit. I'm not in a position to test how this works with iTunes.

I have an optical lead running 10 metres and a coax lead running around 9 metres with perfectly good results. You can get optical splitters and converters which can be used to extend a lead: I've not experimented to find out how long a lead will go before the audio starts to break up., though I would expect a coax lead to go quite a long distance if it's good quality cable.

  • The photo print quality from my Mac to my Epson Artisan 810 is poor.  When I take the same photo files (JPEGs) to my PC to print to the same printer without even uploading them to the PC, they print brighter and crisper from my PC.

The photo print quality from my Mac to my Epson Artisan 810 is poor.  I just purchased my iMac for my photography business in Jan. (this is my first Mac).  When I first tried printing, I noticed the quality wasn't as good as I expected it to be.  Then, I had to print 4-3.5x5s on a sheet, so I e-mailed the image to myself and opened it on my PC to print it (much easier to print that way on PC in Windows Photo Gallery - I think it's impossible to print that way in iPhoto).  That's when I first noticed that when I take the same photo files (JPEGs) to my PC to print to the same printer without even uploading them to the PC, they print brighter and crisper from my PC.
I've already been on the phone and e-mail w/Applecare many times over this issue. We've tried creating a test user and printing from there, and we've tried reinstalling the OS.  I've tried printing from iPhoto, ImageCapture, and Preview apps/utilities, all w/the same result - no comparison to the PC-printed versions (no enhancements have been performed on the PC).
I'm out of ideas, and so is Applecare.  They say it's most likely a driver issue b/c the printer is outdated, and that the only solution is to buy a new printer.  BUT it is a pain for me to purchase a new printer - it takes days of research due to the nature of my business and the fact that I need a printer that can print directly onto a disc.  I love this printer and don't want to have to buy a new one if I don't have to.

Yes.  I've checked for updates, and the driver I installed is the same as the one on Epson's website.  I also spoke with Epson Customer Service, which was a dead end.  Apple says the problem is due to an Epson driver issue (blaming Epson), but Epson says that with the older printers, it's actually Apple who creates the driver, so the problem is actually with Apple.  Typical he-said, she-said...

my ipad streaming purchased video from itunes stops every few seconds.  This does not happen with any other streaming video service.  I have restarted and rebooted already.

I've tried both things, but video still stutters.. Have also tried removing profile, and complete reinstall of firefox.
I'm on 24 Mbit cable and the only user atm. IE and Chrome seems to work without stuttering.
I've having this stuttering every ~5th second, like a small "1/4 sec buffering".

  • Can I stream full quality, non iTunes HD movies with Apple TV 3?

I’m thinking about getting an Apple TV but want to know if I can stream my 1080p movies that are not in iTunes at full quality?
I have a 13’’ MacBook Pro with a 1280x800 native resolution and a 50’’ LG Plasma TV with a 1920×1080 resolution.  If I play a 1080p movie on my MBP in QuickTime/VLC etc. will Apple TV stream the full resolution or just match my MBP lower resolution?
Also, some of my HD movies are 1GB and some are 10GB. Can Apple TV handle that?

AppleTV can only access compatible video in iTunes via its menu system.
If your Mac supports Airplay mirroring you will potentially  be able to screen share the video but none of mine are new enough to test.  Airplay mirroring uses screen sharing type software so the video seen on AppleTv will be a recompressed video output from the Mac and quality may suffer especially if network isn't that fast.
I believe mirroring maxes out at 720p but can't confirm.
If this video is unprotected you'd be better off converting to AppleTv conpatible h264 and adding to iTunes so AppleTV can pull and decode the stream.

  • Sound quality from iTunes Store downloads

    Hi Mac Mavens,
I'm a pretty discerning listener and I'm wondering about the quality of the sound from iTunes Store downloads vis-a-vis a CD. If you play them side by side through a very good sound system would you be able to hear the difference? Any audiophiles out there who have made the comparison? What's your verdict?
    Thanks one and all,
    CZ1957

I, for one, can hear the difference between 256 Kbit AAC and uncompressed AIFF over my Imac's tiny speakers. Over a good sound system, the difference is not subtle.
Compressed audio is inferior to the original, and there's very little argument about that. It's my understanding that most people can hear the difference between lossy compression and uncompressed audio.
Upon hearing it, however, some people can live with the difference, while others can't.
There are two very good reasons why you might wish obtain your audio on physical CD's: 1) if you care about the artistic intent of the musician and you want to hear everything they created, that's only available on CD, and 2) you might not wish to be overcharged for an inferior product. The "iTunes Plus" compression throws away about 80% of the information in the original audio, yet the cost is about the same as a physical CD. Why anyone pays $10 for one fifth of the data on a CD, when all the data is available for about the same price, is beyond me.

  • I want to stream HD content from my Mac to my PS3

I have a MacBook Pro 13 connected to 24" LED and a FW800 WD My Book Studio II (Contains my movies).
Short of buying a Mac Mini and an AirPort express, what is the best way to stream HD and SD videos from iTunes on one mac, to the PS3.
Using EyeConnect on the PS3, I can't even stream 1.5Mb/s PAL 576p 16:9 content encoded in H.264. The same content streams fine using the same router, on Front Row on a second mac.
However, HD content works with neither. The Mac will stream it and drop around 1/6th of the frames of a 1080/24p 5.5Mb/s H.264 movie.
So what software can I use on my Mac to stream to the PS3 SD content encoded as above, without the hideous lag I get at current?
Secondly, what hardware solutions would allow me to stream HD content over my network to the PS3 or Mac?
    Thanks

iCloud is not the way to do this. You should use Migration Assistant - with this you can transfer your complete User folder from the old Mac including preferences and logins. You will need to connect the two with FireWire or USB depending on the models.
Ideally you should do this before you set up the new Mac - if you create a user account with the same name than the Migration will have to give the migrated user folder a different name. When you first switch on the new Mac it should ask you if you want to transfer your data, and give you instructions.

  • I'm trying to stream a movie from my Mac to my Apple TV. It doesn't work.

I'm new to Apple TV. Trying to steam a movie from an app from my Mac to my Apple TV.

Is it a movie you purchased from iTunes or one you already had on your computer?
If it's one you purchased go on Apple TV>movies>purchased
If it's one on your computer: Open iTunes>file>add to library and it will put it in movie, then on AppleTV go to main menu>computer>movies, then choose it.
Make sure on your main menu on AppleTV, sharing is on. Good Luck!

  • Streaming video playlist from iTunes = ATV = TV

I expect this question has been asked, but I could find any specific answers with a search.
Does ATV allow video playlist streaming from iTunes to a TV? I would like to confirm that this capability exists before a purchase. Objective is to have my computer's iTunes feed a TV via ATV for a extended period of time (~8hrs) by playing a video playlist.
    Thanks in advance

Video playlists is an often requested feature for those of us who want to watch random music videos or for those who want to use the device to display a consecutive selection or repeating selection of videos.
No harm in sending feedback here, specifying you are not buying it as it doesn't have the feature:

  • Streaming HD movies from Itunes to Apple TV 2

    Hello all,
I am having an issue streaming HD (m4v) movies from iTunes to my Apple TV 2. First off, I am able to stream Netflix flawlessly using my Apple TV. The HD Movies from ITunes glitches\lags every 20-25 seconds. Here is my setup.
Router: Apple Airport Extreme, using 5ghz band
    Laptop: Macbook Pro
Any suggestions? I have tried turning off Dolby Digital in the Apple TV Settings, but did not help.
    Thanks,
    Dustin

I was having the same error. I switched Audio Language to default and Dolby Digital to 'on' and I finally can see the video, but with no sound...
I tried MKVTools and Handbrake, AC3 passthru for audio on both, iTunes plays nice, but Apple TV doesn't. Any other solution?

  • Cant stream video sound from ITunes to stereo via Airport Express

I'm using a PC with wireless (Centrino 802.11g) with Itunes (Latest release 7.0.0.70) and for some reason the sound from Itunes video will not stream wirelessly to my stereo connected to my AirPort Express.
When the video is embedded in an Itunes playlist of MP3s, the sound will work fine through the AirPort Express with the MP3 tracks, but will toggle over to the PC speakers for the video.
    Any ideas gratefully received?

Airtunes actually only support MP3/AAC audio streaming from iTunes. That's too bad for video.
The things is, even with other Airtunes streaming software, the streaming delay is such that the song will be off by a few second from the video. I guess Apple have choose to do not stream video sound until this may be resolve.
Therefore, I'm not aware of any solution to this issue.

I guess you meant buying something.  You can't cancel something you bought.  Why would you since you can preview anything before purchase?  If you have an issue with your download or a technical issue with your purchase, you can always contact AppleStore support.

  • Gifting Apps from iTunes (Mac) to iPad?

I recently tried gifting an App from iTunes on a Mac to a friend that has an iPad. They received the e-mail on the iPad referring to the App gift, but they couldn't claim the gift. When they tapped the Redeem link in the e-mail they got the message "can't connect to iTunes Store".
Can iPads redeem Apps that have been gifted to them? I assumed that they could. Perhaps they can't?
Message was edited by: Reuben Feffer

Is there a solution to this? I tried to redeem a gifted app, but the link in the email doesn't allow me to connect with the itunes store. I can actually connect with the store through the app store link, but there seems to be no way to find my "gift" in order to redeem it. How can I redeem my gifted app?
I did notice that just after I was gifted, I received a password reset notice from Apple...and I had never requested one. I thought at first that locked meout of my account or something, but like I said, I can indeed get into my account, get into the app store...I just can't get to the place where I redeem my gift, as the link in the email doesn't allow me to enter the store that way.
