Streaming data vs XML

What I am trying to do is this:
I have text files stored on a number of (remote) servers that I want to parse through and then send the resulting information to a central server for processing.
So far I have built a java application to run on each remote server. What the application does is to run a local .exe on the server which creates a text file locally. NB: I cannot control the content created by the .exe and the file size it creates is large(ish)
My first question is:
To get the values from the text file to the central server - is it best to create an XML file in my application, which I can compress and send to the central server or is it better to simply to stream the parsed information to the server? Or should I be trying something else?
My second question is:
Is the file better handled on the central server by an application or by a servlet?
Thanks for any help!

Here are my thoughts:
First, wrapping the values from the text file into XML certainly sounds like a good idea but, if the entire file's contents must be sent anyway, why not send it (without wrapping in XML) and have it parsed by the server? Some information here on what sort of data (i.e. name=value pairs, binary data, etc.) the file contains would be helpful -- why, for example, could the XML file be compressed before sending and not the original?
Secondly, the servlet is essentially the web-facing end of an application: anything an application can do (most probably minus GUI and direct user input) a servlet can do, with the extra ability to accept HTTP-based connections from clients. In other words, the file will be handled by an application, which will be remotely accessed by the client via HTTP through the servlet. The most likely Java-based alternative to a servlet, for sending and receiving files, is a socket-based server: fine for a LAN where you know (and perhaps have control over) firewall implications but tricky for the web.
Sorry not to be more specific -- if the comments are helpful to you, perhaps you could post some info on the nature of the files/data you need to transfer and perhaps we can offer some better advice.
Chris.

  • Like to understand - Stream DataSet (of XML data) to ZIP file?

    i have similar kind of requirement where i need to save dataset data in multi part zip file. from this site i got a sample code
    .NET - Stream DataSet (of XML data) to ZIP file? but few area is not clear.
    the sample code as follows
    // get connection to the database
    var c1= new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connstring1);
    var da = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter()
    SelectCommand= new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand(strSelect, c1)
    DataSet ds1 = new DataSet();
    // fill the dataset with the SELECT
    da.Fill(ds1, "Invoices");
    // write the XML for that DataSet into a zip file (split into 1mb chunks)
    using(Ionic.Zip.ZipFile zip = new Ionic.Zip.ZipFile())
    zip.MaxOutputSegmentSize = 1024*1024;
    zip.AddEntry(zipEntryName, (name,stream) => ds1.WriteXml(stream) );
    zip.Save(zipFileName);
    how this word code Ionic they are using dotnet zip library ? tell me what is
    Ionic
    i guess this line zip.MaxOutputSegmentSize = 1024*1024; means each segment size would be 1mb ? am i right ?
    this line is not clear
    zip.AddEntry(zipEntryName, (name,stream) => ds1.WriteXml(stream) );
    what is the meaning of this (name,stream) stream never declared but how they can use ?
    tell me what is the meaning of this line zip.AddEntry(zipEntryName, (name,stream) => ds1.WriteXml(stream) ); what the code will do reading the above statement.
    suppose if the above code save dataset data in 5 separate zip file then what name will be used for each segment?
    if possible give me the code which will read all segment file and extract its content in a folder. thanks

    Ionic is a 3rd party library which can be download by click on the shortcut where you got the code.  I don't recommend using compiled 3rd part software unless the source code is provided.  Codeplex solutions are usually very reliable.
    Yes 1024 x 1024 is the 1mbyte size of the stream
    The library is using a Linq syntax.  So  simple Linq uses something like this
    .Select(x => x.ToString())  Where x is a variable name that can be any letter(s) you choose.  Select is part of an enumeration.  It is really just a shortcut instead of using a "FOR" statement.
    The line zip is more complicated version of Linq.  It is using two parameters (name,stream).  I don't think the code actually works and you would have to look at the documentation at the codeplex website.

  • Internal Table Data to XML

    Hi
    I have a requirement of writing internal table data to XML. Any idea where i should start.
    I have pretty good experience with ABAP and basic knowledge in XML.
    There are good blogs which talk about transformations and other stuff but they are not able to give me clear path to my solution.
    Could somebody give me a basic example or some reference material where i can move the data in internal table (assume Sales order details of a day) to XML.
    Thanks

    Refer the program -
    In this implementation we will only focus on the creation of the XML file and the transfer to the user. You can not create a XML document directly. You have to use a so called ixml factory first.
    TYPE-POOLS: ixml.
    DATA: l_ixml TYPE REF TO if_ixml.
    l_ixml = cl_ixml=>create( ).
    This iXML factory can create an empty XML document object named l_document.
    DATA:  l_document TYPE REF TO if_ixml_document.
            l_document = l_ixml->create_document( ).
    At this point you can add the nodes (elements, attributes) into the document. First you have to declare the root element node.
    DATA: l_element_root TYPE REF TO if_ixml_element.
    This node we have to give a name and add it (create_simple_node) to the document object l_document, which will be the parent of this node.
    l_element_root  = l_document->create_simple_element(
                name = 'flights'
              parent = l_document ).
    Next we can add child nodes to there parent node using the same method of the document object.
    DATA: l_element_airline TYPE REF TO if_ixml_element,
    l_element_airline  = l_document->create_simple_element(
                   name = 'airline'
                 parent = l_element_root  ).
    An attribute can be add easily using the method set_attribute of the element node.
    l_rc = l_element_airline->set_attribute( name = 'code' value = 'LH401' ).
    Now we have finished the document object. Regretfully it can not be displayed in any form due to the fact that it is a binary object.
    The next step is to convert the created document to a flat file. To achieve this we have to create a stream factory, which will help us to create an output stream.
    DATA: l_streamfactory   TYPE REF TO if_ixml_stream_factory.
    l_streamfactory = l_ixml->create_stream_factory( ).
    In this case, we will convert the document into an output stream which is based on an internal table of type x.
    TYPES: BEGIN OF xml_line,
              data(256) TYPE x,
            END OF xml_line.
    DATA:  l_xml_table       TYPE TABLE OF xml_line,
            l_xml_size        TYPE i,
            l_rc              TYPE i,
            l_ostream         TYPE REF TO if_ixml_ostream.
    l_ostream = l_streamfactory->create_ostream_itable( table = l_xml_table ).
    When we have created the output stream we can do the rendering from the document into the stream. The XML data will be stored in the internal table automatically.
    DATA: l_renderer        TYPE REF TO if_ixml_renderer.
    l_renderer = l_ixml->create_renderer( ostream  = l_ostream
                            & nbsp;              document = l_document ).
    l_rc = l_renderer->render( ).
    In the last step we upload the file to the sapgui
    l_xml_size = l_ostream->get_num_written_raw( ).
    CALL METHOD cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download
       EXPORTING
         bin_filesize = l_xml_size
         filename     = 'c:\temp\flights.xml'
         filetype     = 'BIN'
       CHANGING
         data_tab     = l_xml_table
       EXCEPTIONS
         OTHERS       = 24.
    This finished the first step-of-three. As mentioned before the next log will focus on the conversion from xml files (back) to abap tables.

  • Problem converting data in XML file to internal table data

    Hi all,
    I have a requirement. I need to convert an XML file to internal table data and based on that data do Goods Receipt in SAP.
    With the help of this blog /people/r.eijpe/blog/2005/11/10/xml-dom-processing-in-abap-part-i--convert-an-abap-table-into-xml-file-using-sap-dom-approach
    I am able to convert the XML file to data in SAP. But this blog will display the output on screen as ELELEMNT = nodename VALUE= value of that node.
    But I donu2019t want in that way, I want to store all the data in XML file in an internal table so that I can make use of those values and do Goods Recipt in SAP.
    Can some one suggest how should I read the data in an internal table.
    Here is my code..what changes should I make?

  • Hi, extract data from xml file and insert into another exiting xml file

    i am searching code to extract data from xml file and insert into another exiting xml file by a java program. I understood it is easy to extract data from a xml file, and how ever without creating another xml file. We want to insert the extracted data into another exiting xml file. Suggestions?
    1st xml file which has two lines(text1.xml)
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
    <xs:PrintDataRequest xmlns:xs="http://com.unisys.com/Anid"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://com.unisys.com/Anid file:ANIDWS.xsd">
    <xs:Person>
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://com.unisys.com/Anid file:ANIDWS.xsd">
    These two lines has to be inserted in the existing another xml(text 2.xml) file(at line 3 and 4)

    RandomAccessFile? If you know where you want to insert it.Are you sure about this? If using this, the receiving file would have to have bytes inserted that exactly match the number of bytes replaced. I'm thinking that you'll likely have to stream through the second XML with a SAX parser and copy information (or insert new information) as you stream with an XML writer of some sort.

  • Getting Data INTO XML

    I'm trying to create a class to build an XML file from data that I'm setting inside the class. I'm using a ContentHandler to put the data into a SAXParser. Now I need to use a transformer to put the data into XML. My problem is, it's calling for an InputSource as a SAXSource and I'm not sure how to get the data from the ContentHandler to an InputSource. Can anyone help me with this? I've tried the tutorial and it wasn't much help.
    Linda Shaffer

    You are sending a stream of SAX events to your ContentHandler? By which I mean, you are calling its startElement() method and so on? If so, then here's some code that I use to transform that virtual XML via XSLT:TransformerHandler handler = // a TransformerHandler using that XSLT
    handler.setResult(new StreamResult(whereverYourOutputGoes));
    SAXParserFactory spf = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
    XMLReader reader = spf.newSAXParser().getXMLReader();
    reader.setContentHandler(handler);
    reader.setProperty("http://xml.org/sax/properties/lexical-handler", handler);
    reader.setFeature("http://xml.org/sax/features/namespaces", true);
    reader.setFeature("http://xml.org/sax/features/namespace-prefixes", false);That's all. The TransformerHandler object is the one on which you should be calling startDocument() and so on; as soon as you call endDocument(), the transformation and output will take place.
    If you aren't transforming, just outputting, then use an identity TransformerHandler.

  • What is the meaning of main and stream factory in XML parsing?

    What is the exact meaning (i.e. concept) of main and stream factory in XML parsing?
    [I am aware of steps involved in XML parsing using iXML library..|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/86/8280cf12d511d5991b00508b6b8b11/content.htm], so pls dont explain these steps again.. I have been searching in internet for concepts of these factories, but could not get them anywhere..

  • XML Source - how to stream a 50GB XML file to a database?

    Hi guys!
    I have been trying to load a 50GB XML file (well, just a 1 "row" at first) in to SQL server via OleDB connection. It seems that this component does not stream the data, but tried to load it into memory - I have only 8GB, so that might be an issue.
    Very few people will have 50GB mem on their development machines, so how do I get around this limit? Is there a streaming version of the XML source????
    I did make a test with a 500MB subset version of the same file, and it worked just fine. All became green - with 50GB I do not even get to the "yellow stage". :-(
    Thanks

    Hi guys!
    Some interesting news.
    I managed to get the Wikipedia load example running, after updating the XSD file to version 0.8. With the version 0.3 in the example the job runs for about 1 hour, finishing with 0 row loaded (!). Now the example runs and appears to be streaming(!). This
    question is why I can not get this same behaviour for my other big XML file - the current Wikipedia file is 46GB, so very close to my other 49,5GB file.
    File differences:
    Wikipedia:
    Outputs: 35 (using 2 for testing)
    File size: 45,9GB
    XSD provided by mediawiki.org
    Other XML:
    Outputs: 92(!) (only using 1 for testing)
    File size: 49,5GB
    XSD generated by SQL Data tool/XML Source - also tried XSD generated by the Trang tool.
    The Wiki examples runs and streams the data, my other case appears to try to load all into memory.
    The sample size version of my other XML - of 512MB streams just fine.
    Both projects have the same default buffer and row settings for the Data Flow Task.
    I really do not understand why the wiki file can stream, but the other can not - both are way too big for loading all into memory :-(
    Right now I can only think of the numerous outputs combined with file size as the culpit, as the sample with same outputs worked just fine...
    It just gets "stuck" in the "Prepare for Execute phase is beginning." part... here DTSdebugger.exe process eats up 6,5GB of my machines 8GB...

  • 903/902/BC4J can't get data-sources.xml conn pooling to work in production; help

    I have several BC4J ears deployed to a 903 instance of OC4J being configured as a standalone
    instance. I've had this problem since I started deploying in development on 902. So it's
    some basic problem that I've not mastered.
    I can't get data-sources.xml managed connection pooling to actually pool conn's. I'm wanting
    to declare my jndi jdbc source connection pool in j2ee/home/config/data-sources.xml.
    Have all BC4J apps get conns from this JNDI JDBC pool. I've removed all data-sources.xml from my BC4J ears,
    and published the jndi jdbc source in my oc4j common data-sources.xml. I've tested that this is
    the place controlling the conn URL/login passwd by commenting it out of config/data-sources.xml
    and my BC4J apps then throw exceptions, can't get conn.
    I've set the oc4j startup cmd line with the BC4J property to enabled connection pooling:
    -Djbo.doconnectionpooling=true
    symptom
    Connections are created and closed. Instead of being put back into the pool managed by oc4j,
    what ever BC4J is doing or my data-sources.xml is doing, the connections are just being created and
    closed.
    I can verify this via (solaris) lsof and netstat, where I see my oc4j instance under test load
    with only 1 or 2 conns to the db box, and the ephemeral port is tumbling, meaning a new socket is
    being opened for each conn. ;( grrrrrrr
    Does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening?
    Thanks, curt
    my data-sources.xml

    I've run another test using local data-source.xml, that's packaged in the .ear. Still
    pooling under BC4J doesn't work??
    A piece of info is that the 903 oc4j release notes states that global conn pooling doesn't
    work. Infering that the j2ee/home/config/data-sources.xml data sources aren't pooled or ??
    I just tested so called local connection pooling, where I edited the data-sources.xml that
    gets packaged in the ear, to include the min/max params and re-ran my test.
    Still, the AM creates a new conn, it's to a new socket, and closes the conn when done. Causing
    each conn to not be pooled, rather opened then closed to the DB box. As verified with lsof and
    netstat, checking the ephemeral port # on the DB box side, always changes, meaning it's a
    new socket and not an old pooled conn socket.
    ???? What the heck??
    Surely if the AM conn check out / return code works properly, OC4J's pooling JDBC driver would
    pool and not close the socket??
    Has anywone gotten JDBC Datasource connections in BC4J to actually be pooled under OC4J??
    Since I couldn't get this to work in my early 902 oc4j testing, and now can't get it to work
    still under 903 OC4J, either it's my config or BC4J AM's code or OC4J?
    Any thoughts on how to figure out what's not configed correctly or has a bug?
    Thanks, curt

  • How to add a data-source.xml to the project to config DB connections and to be SCM'ed

    I'd like to explicitly manage a data-sources.xml for my JSP + BC4J project.
    Any helps on getting the released Jdev to add a data-source.xml that would then
    be what the .ear deploys to OC4J?
    Thanks, curt

    I have a JSP + BC4J project:
    So far my naive experiments to explicitely add data-sources.xml to a
    project that is picked up by the deploy to .ear step and put in the
    root of the .ear have failed.
    Is this one of those gaps like the orion-application.xml file, that has no
    solution at present?
    Or is the back-door via adding an EJB component to my project, then deleting it??
    Thanks, curt

    So i logged in as sys & grant the permission to execute on UTL_FILE to ridb (user):
    SQL Statement:
    grant execute on utl_file to ridb
    So, it got compiled successfully but when i execute it gives me error as:
    Source does not have a runnable target.
    What does this mean?
    So I browse through forum & i got to know that i need to initial the UTL_FILE_DIR ="C:/OracleProject" in init.ora
    So can i edit the init.ora with notepad.When i tried to do that it says permission denied
    In my system it shows the init.ora file in path C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\config\scripts
    but there is also other file initXETemp in the same path do i need to do the changes in it.
    I have tried even editing the SPFILE as mentioned below:
    C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\dbs\SPFILEEXE - I had edit this file using notepad & set the value of UTL_FILE_DIR ="C:/OracleProject". So next time when i restarted i'm unable to log on to the database.
    So i had reinstall the software again.
    Could you please let me know how to proceed..

    hi,
    I have created the directory from sys database
    CREATE or replace DIRECTORY XML_DIR2 AS 'C:\OracleProject';

  • Reading the data from XML Source

    Hi
    i want to read the data from XML source file, and update the transaction information to another XML file. how we can do this in ADF, please help
    Thanks
    nidhi

    you may use normal Java API to do that

  • Error While viewing data on XML model- java.sql.SQLException: constante num

    I am trying to read an XML file and I keep getting an error. At first it worked, and the it stopped working. I re-did everthing exactly as first time and I cannot get it work
    Here is what I do :
    1)     Create Physical Architecture under the XML Technology.
    a) we create a Data Server with these data:
              Name: XML_SERIVA_TM_DES
              Technology: XML
              JDBC Driver: com.sunopsis.jdbc.driver.xml.SnpsXmlDriver
              JDBC Url: jdbc:snps:xml?file=c:\Temp\hoy\CRM_CR_CURRENCY.xml&dtd=c:\Temp\hoy\ServiciosSerivaConsultasTypes0.xsd
         b) We place the files xml and xsd files according to the JDBC provided in previous point.
         We click on "Test Connection" and Connection is correct
         c) We create a physical schema under the Data Server created in point a) , with these data:
              Name: XML_SERIVA_TM_DES (After created the name is replaced by XML_SERIVA_TM_DES.Esquema)
              Schema (Schema) : <No Definido> ( not sure of english value, it should be <Undefined>)
              Schema (Work Schema) : <No Definido> ( not sure of english value, it should be <Undefined>)
              Default :It is a checkbox , and it is ticked.
              Under the "Context" tab, we add a logical schema named XML_SERIVA_TM for the "Desarrollo" Context
    2) Create a Model On the Designer Navigator, we expand the "Models" panel
         a) For Organization, We create a "Folder" Model. It is named "XML"
         b) Under the Folder created in a), we create a new Model , with these data:
              Name: XML_SERIVA_TM
              Code: XML_SERIVA_TM
              Technology: XML
              Logical Schema: XML_SERIVA_TM
         c) Do reverse-engineering.
              In the Reverse tab of the model,
                   + "Standard" is selected
                   + Context: "Desarrollo"
                   + The types of objects to reverse-engineer are: Table
              In the Selective reverse tab, we select : New Datastores, Existing Datastores, Objects to reverse.
              All the datastores that appear are checked
              We click on Reverse Engineer in the toolbar menu
              And the reverse engineer is done successfully and the datastores appear in the model panel
         d) We try to test the reverse engineering by clicking on the datastores and select "View Data",
              after click we get the folloging exception (running with Local agent) :
