Streaming DIVX dead after Tiger update!

Not sure if this is the right place, but I have Tiger (10.4.11) and after a couple of updates (I believe for Quicktime and Mozilla), Divx completely stopped working in my browser... I've downloaded the most recent Divx player (the all-in-one, free) from divx.com and it's still not working. I got rid of the old version, rebooted the computer several times, and still get nothing. I haven't found ANY help online with this specific issue. Would anyone possibly be able to direct me to a helpful resource if they don't know what the problem could be? Thank you!

These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5)
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • P1i dead after running Update Service - any suggestions

    Hi
My P1i appears completly dead after running Update Service.  I've tried removing the battery, fully charging the battery etc.  When i run Update Service again it just says my phone is up-to-date.
    any suggestions?

Unfortunately, in this case, we would only be able to suggest sending the handset for service. Usually when running the Update Service, you should get the option for EXIT but also for INSTALL when you are advised that you have the latest software. If you do not have this, the handset may need to be flashed by an engineer.
If you wish to do this, I'd recommend contacting your local support team to be advised of your nearest service location. Contact details can be found here:

My Qosmio F10 is dead after BIOS update ... it doesn't work anymore .. i update the bios from 1.10 to 1.20
the switch Led is always orange...
what can i do to make it work again ? or return the 1.10 version?

    Hi
You can check many postings in this forum about the BIOS upgrade procedure.
Mostly the users damage the notebook because of wrong BIOS or wrong BIOS procedure.
If the notebook is dead after this procedure so it could be a damage motherboard.
In this case only the Toshiba service partner can solve this issue. ;(

  • Dead after software update

I noticed after work tonite the software update shortcut was up with needed updates. I told it to do it and noticed later it has shut down, not restarted. I started it back up and it made it thru the tone, grey screen with apple and swirl thing and shut down.

This time the monitor dropped out before the computer shut off.. ahaa reset video card again.. cured... no.. now no monitor at all no chimes either no code either
One more time..No lights no tones no monitor so I let it go and the dreaded fans slowly climbing to high speed began, shut off and started typing this on my pc.
    Main board right?
    how do I verify?
Best place to get a replacement board? Man this is a drag.... Cant afford a new mac
    Please any help?
    Thanks Kurt

See if you can Boot off your original G5 Install Disk while holding down Option/alt key to select AHT, then run the extended Apple Hardware Test.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions. (Well, the Installer actually uses superuser Permissions to do it's work, but after reboot it doesn't guarantee communication with other existing needed files Permissions.)
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Yoga 2 Pro Went DEAD After BIOS Update

Had a horrible experience .. with good ending ... when upgrading Bios for my Yoga 2 Pro. So I'd like to share with others. I bought my Yoga 2 Pro last June (Man 3/22/14) and love it! But, it had problem restarting automatically after Windows Update. At least 3 times (That I can recall. Did not use it briefly from June 30 - July 22), the screen reminding user not to shutdown after Windows the update would stay on until I manually powered it down and restarted it. Last July 23, it did again after Windows Update. Searched Lenovo web-site and found a Bios Update for Yoga 2 Pro (Win 8.1 64-bit). Downloaded the new Bios (dated July 11, 2014) and went through the instruction striclty. First of, the screen responses were not at all as detailed in the instruction. So, the instruction is not very good.  Received 2 warnings: Make sure the laptop is connected to the charger during the procedure, and the bios is for Yoga 2 Pro ONLY do not install it on any other models. As part fo the procedure, the laptop switched to a Bios Utility program. Again received the aforementioned warnings. Update progress was shown on the screen. All of a sudden, then screen went blank and the keyboard stayed lit. Waited for about 30 minutes. Still the same. Press and held the power button down (not sure for how long)  ... nothing!   Just no response from the latop.  Called Tech support. She (the tech support lady) said that ... it is not recommended for user to go through the BIOS upgrade! What?  Then why post it on Lenovo.com? She also said that I should not have downloaded software from the internet and upgrade, especially for BIOS. Well, I told her that I did not download the program from ANY web-site, I downloaded it from LENOVO.com. She said further that looks like the BIOS update had damaged my mother-board, there is a problem with Win 8 & 8.1, and because it was my own doing ... the damage would not be covered by the warranty!  Considering the circumstance, Lenovo would waiver the initial $99 fee to assess the damage, but I would have to pay for any repair costs. In any case, I was so fumed at Lenove Tech Support responses that I hung up. close my laptop and put it aside. Almost 24 hours later, when the battery drained completely, I connected the laptop to the charger, press the power button to turn it on ... and ... to my surprise, the laptop booted and everything came back normal! The last (7/25) auto restart seemed to go well. Not sure if the auto restart problem is fixed with the new BIOS, but it seems to be. Time will tell.

Thank you for your posting.  I searched the net when I ran into the problem, but could not find any help.  Obviously, my search was not exhaustive. I was trying to make the following:    a.  Lenov should be more specific in their BIOS update instruction.  Their instruction was ... far ... far from reality.      b.  Lenovo tech assistance was ... not much help.  After listening to the description of my prolem, the tech lady immediately said that the operation must have damaged the mother-board, and that the operation is not ... recommended.  No guidance on draining the battery a or how to restart the machine, etc...  What I received was confusing that caused more panic!   As a note, I had done BIOS upgrade on DELL PC/laptop before w/o any problem.  I fully understand the implication of a BIOS upgrade, but trusted that manufacturer fully tested whatever that they post in their web-site.  Oh well, live ... and learn!  All in all, the Yoga 2 Pro is a great machine and I love it!  Hope that anyone who runs into the same problem will be able to get the needed help in time! Cheers,

  • [Solved] Audio dead after system update

I was having a difficult time with network issues so I did a system update last night, and while it cured my network woes something broke my sound which was working fine before. I use MPD and Ario to play music and VLC to play video and both have no sound. I tried everything in the wiki to no avail, and searched the BBS for ideas (I always use startx).
I did several lsmod, aplay -l, aplay -L, etc commands and everything looks just the same as before the update. I checked audio levels in alsamixer, and even tried to install pulseaudio on top of several reboots and adding myself to audio. The only thing else that might help is I hear a pop from my speakers every so often. I don't know what else to provide that could help. It's hard for me to figure out because everything looks normal, and the cards are even being initialized as far as I can tell.

*EDIT: I went ahead and tried a few more things and reread the PulseAudio entry in the wiki and used pavucontrol as a last ditched effort and found that after the update it seems the soundcard became muted somehow even though I never had pulse installed before on this machine.
I should have tried that first, sorry for anyone who wasted their time on this thread and a good lesson for fellow newbies is to always try control packages first before moving onto other means/making a thread. Marking this as solved.

  • Start Up "POP" Noise Before Chime-After Tiger Update

I've read quite a few posts about weird audio problems after the update. On startup when the chime is supposed to happen I get the chime but also an audio "pop" or "crack" through the speakers just before the chime. You know like the speakers are at full volume or something. My cure was to mute the PB speakers before I turned it off. It was working but lately even with the speakers muted I get the pop where there should be the chime on startup. Has anyone else experience this. I think my warranty just ran out or is really close to, if it's a sound card thing. Thanks in advance.

Oddly enough, I get pop/crackling noises just about everyday, especially in iChat. I think it's just a bug.

  • IMac DEAD after software update!

HELP! I have a new-ish (january or so) aluminum iMac, worked perfectly up until the recent software update to Leopard v. 10.5.3... after the update, it began spontaneously restarting. I could only use it for a brief amount of time before it reset itself again (and usually getting stuck with applications 'Not Responding' until then). I ran the latest iMac Firmware Update, thinking maybe that would be the solution, but it only made things worse (stupid). With each reboot it got worse, and eventually got stuck in a restart loop, making it to the blue screen and rebooting before reaching the desktop. I unplugged it to let it rest a bit, plugged it back in a couple hours later, and NOTHING. no response to the power button. NOTHING. Now I have a $2200 paperweight until I can get some kind of help on this..
fwiw, no problems post-software update on my 1&1/2 year old macbook...

Ok, here's my latest... I've got it back running again (for now, and hopefully for a while).
I did something similar to what the earlier poster said. hit the power button (the cd drive made it usual noise for a few seconds) then held the power button (i.e. cycled it off), then hit the power button again... it took a couple times but I heard the apple boot sound (whatever that's called) and it booted.
I actually had to do it again cause the machine got stuck in that reboot loop again before I could do the SMC reset but the second time I was quick enough to do the shutdown.
So far it's been up for the last 8 minutes or so...

  • Satellite L650-1KR PSK1JE - dead after BIOS update

As the subject already states, my Satellite L650 - 1KR Part No. PSK1JE is totally OFF after BIOS-Update 2.40-WIN from bios-download-page.
I tried everything: Press all buttons, take out the laptop battery, only laptop battery, ...simply nothing!
My last hope is a hidden, very special key sequence for toshiba laptops or something like this.
Of course my warranty is already over... :-(
    Please help!
    Thank you in advance...
    lichtimc

Sorry to hear you have such problem now. I presume something went wrong and now the BIOS chip is screwed up and in such situation you need professional help. Toshiba service provider can help you with this but Im afraid it can be very expensive.
In the past I never had such problems but on the net you can find many pages with description what can be done. Visit this page and check if you can find something useful there. I mean you can try to fix it alone.

  • Ipod Touch Totally Dead After Failed Update to 4.0 OS

    Hi folks,
There is another discussion with the exact same title but the problem was never resolved. I decided to create a new discussion because I successfully revived my buddies iPod that had the same problem. I know a lot of people probably still have paperweight out-of-warranty iPods lying around, so here goes!
My friend had a 3rd gen 8GB iPod Touch and uses iTunes on Windows XP. He plugged his iPod in one night and iTunes recommended he update to OS4. He was previously running the latest OS3 so he said "why not?!". Along went the update no problem until right before rebooting the iPod at the end. He reported that all of a sudden, the battery charging screen popped up with a fully charged green battery, then instantly changed to a red "dead battery" screen then it shut off entirely. That was it. Dead. Nothing he would do with the buttons gave any sign of life.
1 month later of researching, trying DFU mode and all sorts of attempts - still a dead, attractive paperweight with never a single pixel of light on the screen. He finally gave up and asked me to take a look at it.
I tried charging it overnight with a 110V to USB wall charger (as some people recommended) - no change.
I tried plugging it into a Mac (as some people also suggested) - no change, no signs of life.
Plugging it into a Windows XP machine gave an "Unknown USB device" or "USB device not recognized" error.
Well. I managed to get it into DFU (restore) mode and reinstalled OS4.2 with no problem (but it was not obvious) - now it is working again! A fully revived iPod Touch!
So, here is what I did:
    1. Left "charging" overnight with a wall-charger NOT THE USB PORT OF A PC OR MAC.
    2. Getting the iPod into DFU mode is tricky and a question of precise timing so it seems. The exact sequence that worked for me was: 1. HOLD the power button. 2. HOLD (at the same time) the Home button. 3. After 10 seconds, release the POWER button and continue to HOLD the Home button. Eventually, the PC or Mac should detect a new USB device and automatically install the driver for the DFU recovery mode. Once the iPod is detected in this mode, you can release the Home button. Note that you MUST have iTunes installed in order for the computer to install the driver for the iPod. If you do not have iTunes installed, Windows will still report the device as a "USB Device" and ask for the driver (contrary to the "Unknown USB device" or "USB device not recognized" errors). Once the device is happy in your OS, fire up iTunes and follow the instructions to restore your iPod. Enjoy! I recommend downloading/installing the LATEST ITUNES before recovering your device. Older versions of iTunes may contain the bug that killed your iPod the first time you tried updating.
Notes: 1. According to Apple, holding the 2 buttons down for 10 seconds and releasing both buttons at the same time simply performs a RESET of the iPod. It does not put it into DFU mode. You MUST continue holding the Home button after releasing the power button in order to get it to convert to DFU mode. I think this is where most people are having trouble. Also, it may have been a coincidence of the exact time I held the Home button after releasing the power button. Try holding it for different intervals after releasing the power button (i.e. 1 sec, 2 secs, 3 secs all the way to 10 secs or even more). BE PATIENT and don't give up! Unless your iPod has a real HARDWARE PROBLEM (which if it was working fine before you tried to update it probably does not), you can ALWAYS get it into DFU mode because that part is HARDCODED in a chip in the iPod and cannot be changed or damaged.
When I was playing with the iPod trying to get it in DFU mode, Windows would see it as a Unknown USB Device. Then sometimes it would disappear and come back as an Unknown USB device. This is a GOOD THING. That means that the iPod IS resetting as per Apple's instructions (which means the iPod DOES have some sort of life). After trying 4 or 5 times, I finally got it to disappear and reappear in DFU mode (as a simple "USB Device" because I did not have iTunes installed. After installing the latest iTunes, it installed the correct drivers automatically).
So give it a try and post your results! Good luck!

My friend had a 3rd gen 8GB iPod Touch
Just for clarification so other people don't get confused and this misinformation keeps getting generated, Apple did not sell a 3rd generation 8GB iPod Touch.
So, your friend must have a 2nd generation iPod Touch.
The 3rd generation was only made in the 32GB and the 64GB models.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#iPodtouchlate2009
The 2nd generation has A1288 stamped on the back
The 3rd generation has A1318 stamped on the back and again, only on the 32GB and 64GB models.
Some software is only designed for the 3rd generation and above so making sure what generation you have can be very important before you possibly buy something your iPod Touch can't use.

  • IPod touch completely dead after attempted update to 3.0

    Cross-posted to "with Windows" forum...
...Not only during update to 3.0, but also during update to 2.2.1 and during a restore attempt 6 weeks ago. All 3 "dead" iPods have been replaced by Apple - I'd like a solution...
I have videoed the update taking place and the iPod dying during it - sadly it is in MOV format (439MB) and I cannot convert to an uploadable version for Youtube... By DEAD, I mean, no power and will not display ANYTHING on the screen. Simply won't power up again.
This is what happens: Download update using iTunes... Extracting software... Backing up iPod... Preparing the iPod for the software update... (iPod shows USB plug and CD - then apple logo...) then the updating progress line appears on iTunes and on touch. Updating iPod software... Verifying updated iPod software... Updating the iPod firmware... White progress line on iPod disappears after a few seconds and screen goes black. Error message displays on iTunes - "The iPod xxxx could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)"
iPod is now dead and needs to be replaced,
    1) Has anyone experienced this?
    2) Has anyone SOLVED it?
Maybe related is a problem with some videos that have happened recently (and were the cause of me trying to restore the iPod last time it died) MP4 (or MPV files) play for about 20-30 minutes, then screen goes white, then black, then apple logo appears, then iPod returns to home screen after about 30 seconds. My usual solution to this has been to remove all videos, photos (which are corrupted by this time), audio, and then re-sync back.
I'd appreciate ANY help please. I intend buying an iPhone soon and would like to know that the problem won't occur on that, every time I try to restore.
    Cheers!
    Martin

To begin the discussion, let's throw in a few possibilities:
    1. Is your iPod in the process of being "jail-broken"? If so, I'd avoid the risk and stick with standard Apple firmware. Some hacks end up with dead iPods.
    2. Do you use iTunes for syncing? Only use Apple software for managing your file system.
    3. Are you Windows or Apple? For whatever it's worth, I've only seen this happen with Windows machines.
No solutions here - but maybe some hopeful suggestions.

  • Photo stream not working after ios7 update

after updating to ios7 new photos taken with my iPhone 4S are not streaming automatically. my photo stream is activated in settings on all devices.

    hi léonie,
yes, i know it sometimes takes awhile to sync, but the 6 photos i took last night in the club, where there was no wifi, have not shown up in my photo stream. usually, they will sync once i have returned to a wifi network.
fortunately, i could share them in a new stream which i could then fetch on my home computers.
however, i have taken new photos today and it has worked seamlessly. so, i consider the problem resolved even though it is still a mystery for the 6 photos i took last night.
i generally enjoy the my photo stream service, although i am never sure where to erase photos. i have determined that once they are on all devices, you must erase the photos on all devices individually.
i use this server frequently as i take pictures all day and edit them when i get home. it is good to have the photos on the server and not have to physically download them to the machine on which i do my sorting and editing.
now, if only it would work with adobe lightroom, it would be perfect.

  • Satellite L630 dead after BIOS update

    Hi
I have a problem with a Toshiba Satellite Laptop L630 model PSK00E-017019EN (UK model).
A Toshiba software scan recommended a BIOS update and as I had been having some issues with the laptop I decided to let it run . . . bad mistake!
The laptop will now not fire up into bios so is effectively dead.
I have downloaded various versions of the Phoenix Crisis Recovery Disk (which will build a bootable USB flash drive with MINIDOS.SYS, PHLASH16.EXE and a generic BIOS.WPH) and have also downloaded the latest BIOS from the toshiba website.
The downloaded Toshiba BIOS is an exe file SL630_L635_WIN_B140.exe which will extract to the following files using WINRAR (I have also tried picking up the files from %temp% after running the exe file with the same result).
    The files I get are:
    BB10140.FD (4170kb)
    Ding.wav (104kb)
    InsydeFlash.exe (764kb)
    iscflash.dll (1760kb)
    iscflash.sys (14kb)
    iscflashx64.sys (23kb)
    and platform.ini (9kb)
I was expecting to see the actual bios in the form xxxx.rom or xxxx.WPH so that I could add this to the bootable flash drive to reflash the bios.
So my actual question is, could someone point me towards where I can download the correct BIOS.ROM file for this laptop and also where I can obtain the correct version of Phoenix Crisis Recovery Disk software.
Also could you confirm the correct key sequence to boot to the Crisis Recovery flash drive . . . I have seen mention of both FN F and FN B (both used without battery and whilst plugging in adapter and then power button) . . . the FN F routine seems to boot the Flash drive but obviously without the correct WPH file it will not solve the problem.
    Thanks
    Phil

    OK
.... well contacting Toshiba support was about as much using as whistling in the wind!
They had no knowledge of reflashing the bios, certainly could not send me an image for a crisis disk (even for a charge) . . . and their only suggestion was to have the laptop picked up for assessment and quote which would cost nearly 100 even if I didnt have it repaired. (I doubt if the laptop is worth much more than that)
So back to the forums in the hope that someone might point me to the correct USB Flash drive flashing routine for this laptop!
I have a feeling that the bootblock might now be damaged on the BIOS as it is now behaving differently if I try to flash the bios.
If I put the correct "bios.fd" file on a USB stick and then use FN-F on power up (no battery installed) then the usb stick flashes once, machine powers up, stays on for about 10 seconds and then restarts back to the black screen.
I have also tried (as suggested on one forum) putting all of the extracted files from the bios exe from Toshiba onto a stick + the FD file renamed as BIOS.FD . . . still the same result.
I am close to sticking it onto Ebay as "spares or repairs" . . . HELP!
    thanks
    Phil
