Streaming from Atv to Macbook

Hi guys,
I would like to buy an Apple TV, but before i do, i have one question.
If I put all my music from my macbook to the hard drive of apple tv (so i won't have any music on my macbook), will I be able to listen to this music with my macbook (with streaming from apple tv?)
I was looking for solutions in the previous topics but i didn't find anything...
Thank you !

very bad idea. the TV should not hold the only copy of your precious media files. if you need to make room on your startup disk, move e.g. your iTunes library to an external HD hanging off your Mac.
check this read on how to transfer your iTunes library.
will I be able to listen to this music with my macbook (with streaming from apple tv?)
no. TV can stream music to another TV or Airport Express units but not to your computer.

    1. In order to view any of that media, does it have to be physically copied to the ATV hardrive via sync (therefore creating two copies of each media file, one on my IMac and one on ATV)?
no, it can be streamed from the mac to the appletv
    2. Can I watch or listen to any of that media without copying the files to the ATV (ie: can I stream to ATV from ITunes on my IMac - like Airtunes?)
    yes, see above
    3. If I buy a movie on ATV, I assume it downloads to the HD in ATV. Then I assume if I sync ITunes it will create a second copy of that movie file on my IMac?
no, it will move the purchased item to itunes. if you want it back on the appletv you would need to sync it to it yourself.
    4. If I've watched that movie, and I don't want it taking up HD space on the ATV....how do I delete it from ATV?
you remove any content from the appletv by using itunes and adjusting your sync options.
    5. Finally, if I buy a movie in Itunes on my IMac and want to watch it via ATV and I have to synch it over there..... this means that before I can watch that movie I have to first wait for it to download into Itunes and then wait for it to sync a copy to ATV?
    yes that is correct.

  • Stream from atv to antother tv

Im using my atv in the livingroom where the main tv is. But I sometimes want to stream the atv content to my bedroom tv. Is there a device that can make this possble. That doesnt cost more that a new atv in it self.

No as that is not how the ATV is designed. However there are other products that can send stuff from your computer to your TV, but will have nothing to do with the ATV.

  • Streaming from iTunes (on Macbook/Mini) to iPad

I'd really like to be able to stream from my Mac or Mini to my iPad (video). It doesn't seem like there's any way to do this with content you purchase from iTunes. Am I mistaken? When the updates related to the new AppleTV come out, will this "AirPlay" feature allow this? Seems like if you can stream from mac->appletv, streaming mac->ipad should work too.

I did kind of conflate two things there, didn't I? Great app on the iPad. However, I frequently listen to it at home through my home theatre. I can stream it to my ATV/TV/Speakers from the webpage from my computer. I was trying to help the OP justify the price of the computer app.

  • Stream from ATV

In 2.3 your supposed to be able to stream FROM the Apple TV to AirTunes devices???
    How do you do this?

You need to turn airtunes on in your settings and then any speakers which can be accessed by wifi will be listed on your tv.

  • HT4437 Can't stream from iPad or Macbook Pro to Apple TV

I can't stream video or audio from my Macbook Pro or iPad to Apple TV. It used to work but I haven't used Apple TV with my iPad or Macbook for several months. Software for the Macbook Pro, Apple TV and iPad is current and all 3 devices are logged onto the same WiFi. Home Sharing is enabled. All 3 devices are logged into iTunes with the same Apple ID. Airplay does not appear in Control Center on my iPad and I do not get the Airplay symbol on the computer or iPad when using iTunes or any other app. I tried restarting the Apple TV and even restoring factory defaults. What am I missing?

  • Photo Stream from iPhone to Macbook

Photos won't stream to my Macbook from my phone.  When I go to System Preferences on my computer, then to iCloud it tells me that I need to upgrade iPhoto.   I don't know what version I have but it's the one that came with my computer in 2008.
Is there a way to do this without paying the $14.99?  I'm a recreational user and this would just be easier than emailing myself the photos I want for just messing around.
Also, someone previoulsy mentioned an iphoto plug-in.  What and where is that?
    Thanks

    No
As you saw when you read the FAQs link I posted
To use My Photo Stream you need an iCloud account, compatible devices, and up-to-date software:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5.1 or later
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and iPhoto 9.2.2 or Aperture 3.2.3 or later
Apple TV (2nd generation) with Apple TV Software Update 5.0 or later
PC with Windows 7 or later and the iCloud Control Panel 2.1 or later for Windows
Unfortuantly now in order to upgrade to iPhoto '11 you have to either upgrade yoru OS to Mavericks - a free upgrade if you Mac supports it - or putchase an iLife '11 DVD from a vendor - Amazon or eBay are sources

  • Rented Movies from ATV to MacBook iTunes

How do I transfer rented movies from my ATV to my computer?

Pretty sure this can't be done. I think you can only sync purchased content from Apple TV back to a computer. When you rent a movie, Apple TV tells you that the movie can only be viewed on Apple TV.

  • Music plays slowly on Apple TV with Remote or Streaming from ATV

When using Apple's Remote application on my iPhone or when selecting streamed playlists from my Apple TV the music plays slowly. It plays with no interruptions, what I mean is that the tempo is off. I do not have this problem when selecting and streaming through AirTunes to the AppleTV from my Mac Pro.
This started to happen with iTunes8...
Anyone else notice this? It is truly irritating to listen to music when it just isn't up to speed.

I appreciate that in a pc environment with a full blown operating system you shouldn't really need to restart to diagnose faults, however I believe we are all going to need to get used to restarting consumer gadgets on a regular basis. I've been in the habit of restarting my phone every day for around five or six years now and I didn't stop when I got my iphone.

  • Video Playback Pauses when streaming from iTunes to itunes

    Hi,
I have a 2011 iMac running OS X Mavericks Server and I use this as my main iTunes library computer.  I also have a 2013 (latest model) MacBook Air running Mavericks.  My WiFi network comprises of 2x Airport Express's, both the latest models and configured for both 2.4ghz & 5ghz frequencies.
Using Home Sharing, I like to stream video from my iMac's iTunes library to my MacBook Air.  The problem is that playback pauses every few minutes.  The only way to resume playback is to close the video window and open the video again.  This problem occurs regardless of video quality (SD, 720 or 1080) and on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi settings...  On the odd occasion this problem doesn't happen at all.
I experienced this problem before upgrading to mavericks so I don't think its mavericks related.  And I don't experience this playback issue when streaming to ipad mini, iphone, or apple tv... It only happens when streaming from imac to macbook air...
Please help if you have a solution.

    Try:
ffmpeg -i rtsp://localhost:8554/test.sdp -acodec copy -vcodec copy -re -f flv "rtmp://168.187.121.71/livepkgr/mystream&adbe-live-event=liveevent"
I don't strream ffpmeg from my source, but I stream h264 from my source, and this works when transcoding.
    Hope this helps!

  • Stream from Macbook Pro to AppleTV with no internet

Help, I have just moved temporarily to a house with no wireless internet access. I want to stream content from my Macbook Pro to my apple tv, but it doesnt show up on the AppleTVs computer choices. At my old place with an iMac sharing internet connection everything was fine. Do I need an internet connection to stream to ATV? What can I do to get the ATV adn Macbook pro to talk to each other.
Ive tried an ethernet cable between the two which is fine, except my itunes purchases wont copy because they cant authorize through the internet.

I suspect you need to configure the computer to 'create a network', then join the Apple TV to that network.

I think this problem will exist whether you have wireless connection between the ATV and the computer or not.

  • Can I stream to ATV from my AirPort?

I am using AirPort (2TB) to store video, music and photos. Can I stream video or music directly from the AirPort or do I need to put the files into iTunes and stream from there? I am currently using eyeTVHD to convert old VHS tapes into DVD. I am saving them so they can be played on ATV. Just don't want to fill my MacBook's HD with all the files. THanks.

AppleTV is fed all it's media by iTunes whether this is synced or streamed to it.
AppleTV cannot access network shares/external drives etc by itself.
You can do what you want to in theory by changing iTunes Preferences>Advanced so that media is not copied to the iTunes library which presumably resides on your Macbook - add the stuff from the Airport to iTunes and it will just keep a reference of file location to use when streaming or syncing.
Synced material, once transferred does not need iTunes to play, but to stream additional content requires itunes running.
Note - you say you're converting old video to DVD - AppleTV cannot play DVD media folders, and doesn't handle menus (except for some new iTunes Store movies) - you might need to convert your home made DVDs to h264 format. Better still would be to export the project to a physical DVD but also to create an AppleTV compatible format fro use with that - EyeOne software used to have an option to edit and convert for AppleTV but I don't have the recent update.

  • AirPlay streaming from my MacBook

I started a similar discussion a couple weeks ago (see bottom of this post) and my problem has recurred. Here's the rundown:
When I stream music from my 2012 MacBook Air to my new ATV, it streams about 3 seconds of audio and then the audio drops (though it shows it still playing). Initially, this was also true using AirPlay from any device, but I can now get it to stream from my iPhone. iTunes is up to date on my computer. Here are the steps I've taken so far:
First I swapped out my Arris router from Comcast for my AirPort. For the first day after I did this, AirPlay streamed just fine (and I marked my previous post resolved). It also significantly increased my wireless speed to the point that we're now streaming HD video through the Apple TV with no issues.
When the issue recurred, I made my wireless network hidden but also checked my device logs in the AirPort utility and didn't see anything I didn't recognize. It made no performance difference, so I made the network discoverable again.
I enabled the 5 gHz wireless network. Since doing this, my iOS devices can stream via AirPlay to the ATV, but my MacBook still can't. Video mirroring works just fine (or extending the monitor onto the TV), but not audio. The same issue happens with Home Sharing on the ATV.
I have enabled WAN AirPlay in the AirPort utility.
One thing I haven't done: the AirPort firmware could be updated, and I've tried to do that twice and encountered an error message each time afer the firmware is downloaded.
    Original post:
I just bought a new ATV, and when I use AirPlay to stream music it gives me about 3 seconds of playback and then goes silent even as my 2012 MacBook Air shows that the song is still playing through the ATV. Using my iPhone gave the same issue. The ATV is a week out of the box. Any ideas?

If the router is old that may have an impact. However, I would also check the network. Lagging is usually caused by interference. If on wifi try ethernet. Make sure the router is up to date as well. Reboot ATV and router.
Go to istumbler.net to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise.

  • Can't Get ATV to Stream from iTunes

OK, I can't get my ATV to stream from my iTunes. when I initially set up the ATV, it synced to my iTunes. I actually don't recall any option to sync or stream, but makbe I missed it.
Anyway, the help says the following:
"Playing your iTunes library on your TV using Apple TV
If you have an Apple TV, you can stream items from your iTunes library to your TV. You can also sync your Apple TV with your iTunes library so that content is automatically loaded onto your Apple TV.
Syncing your Apple TV with iTunes
If your Apple TV is synced with an iTunes library, it is already set up for streaming. You can also stream items from an iTunes library that isn't synced with your Apple TV. You can stream from up to five iTunes libraries, plus the library the Apple TV is synced with.
To set up your Apple TV for streaming:
Make sure the computer you want to stream from is on, and iTunes is open.
On your Apple TV, choose Sources, choose "Connect to New iTunes," and make a note of the passcode displayed.
In iTunes, select the Apple TV with "Click to set up" next to it, and enter the passcode.
While content is being streamed, the computer must remain on and iTunes must remain open. If you stream content while Apple TV is syncing, the sync pauses until streaming stops.
You can stream from only one iTunes library at a time. To stream from a different library, choose Sources on your Apple TV and then choose another source."
    Now, here is the problem:
    1. It says "If your Apple TV is synced with an iTunes library, it is already set up for streaming." NOT. No where do I see any stream or share selection. Only sync.
    2. It says "You can stream from up to five iTunes libraries, plus the library the Apple TV is synced with." Again, not that I can see.
    3. It says "On your Apple TV, choose Sources, choose "Connect to New iTunes," and make a note of the passcode displayed." I don't have a "Sources" option anywhere in ATV. How am I supposed to select it?? All I have is a "Computers" selection, which shows me my current selected computer for synching, and another option to share a library, with a new passcode. But, only to a second computer, not my main one (where all the files are!).
I don't understand. It's like it's referring to some other device, with different menus. Now, I have ver 2.0 of ATV, and 7.6 of iTunes. WHAT IS GOING ON?
I purchased this thing to take advantage of streaming, for photos and video. I only bought the 32 GB unit, but even the 160 would not be bug enough to have all my photos and HD video. So, streaming is a must. But, it would be nice to also sync the music files so I can listen to them without having the computer on. If the thing functed like the manual says, I would be happy. But, it doesn't.
    HELP!!

Good news- this is all so much simpler that you think. (I know because I too struggled with it for days.) It turns ou that you have to do NOTHING to set up streaming with 2.0. Once you have synced your computer, just leave your computer running and on your TV using ATV you will see whatever movies you have imported into iTunes in the movie menu even if you have not synced them. The only way that you can tell that they are not synced is that when you select them to play the streaming bar will appear briefly at the bottom of your TV screen to indicate that it is being synced. If you turn your computer off the movie that you have chosen would not even appear in the menu.
Hope this helps- it is too bad apple doesn't give more info about using ATV!
