Streaming from iPhone/iPad to Apple TV

I can't get my iPhone and iPad to recognize Apple TV any longer. I've always been able to do this before, and Apple TV works fine otherwise...downloading movies or pulling content (photos, music) from the home computer.

I had the same problem last week. My Apple TV was connected to my Apple Airport Express which was set to expand my Wifi. My iPhone and my Mac were connected to my main router, the Apple Airport Extreme. I changed the Airport Express setup from expand network to join network. Maybe you have a similar problem?

I Just moved and cannot get cable/internet for another week. Soo... My iphone has internet (duh!) but cannot support a wireless hotspot. You can't use the cellular connection to stream data from the web and then share it using a wifi hotspot on your phone to use AirPlay if that is what you are after.
You can however set up a proper wifi network using a router if you want without having an outside connection and use it to Airplay content on your phone you downloaded from your cellular network.

Can't Stream from iPhone 5C to Apple TV

My Apple TV is on the same home network as my iPhone and on the television main screen I can see iTunes Radio and Netflix and all of the other apps, so I have it set up, however, when I try to check for Updates, it starts working * and then is always unable to connect. So can someone help me resolve this so I can stream content from my iPhone to the Apple TV? It used to work but I recently changed providers and the new provider added my Wi-Fi of my Apple TV so the device is recognized, but still when I try to stream it won't send whats on my phone to the Apple TV. I guess I am looking for some things to try.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are experiencing networking issue with your Apple TV. You mentioned receiving an error message when attempting to check for updates - how about when you try other internet-related tasks? Do any of the apps work (i.e. trailers, iTunes store, etc)?

Streaming from your iPad, iphone etc

I recently got Apple TV for Christmas and thus far I have been pretty happy with it. My only issue is streaming directly from my iPad. I can use Airplay remote to use my iPad as a remote. This is pretty cool but according to the apple website I can directly stream from the iPad by tapping the airPlay icon all the way to right of the ipad's video menu bar which gives you the option of using the iPad or Apple TV. Once I hit Apple TV I can hear the sound but I only get an icon for the video not the actual video play back from the iPad; the iPad has the paused video from where ever I tapped airplay. Any suggestions? I checked the website and am doing all the stuff they say to, but I don't get the screen that says that the video is playing on Apple TV on my ipad.

Video playback is currently only supported through youtube, itunes or recorded through the IOS device (eg. iphones). The next software update will provide support for 3rd party apps. I have begun converting some my collection of dvds to itunes formats to be able to do this. A very good converter I found specifically for this with specialised Apple tv2 presets is called Handbrake.

No, I would recommend getting a Roku. Apple doesn't allow Hulu Plus or HBO GO.

Your iPhone must also be signed into the same iCloud account as the iPad. Then look in Settings/iCloud/Photo Stream and ensure both My Photo Stream and Shared Photo Streams are turned on.

icloud does not handle music, except for letting you download music you previously bought at the iTunes store. For music, get it into iTunes on your PC, then connect your devices to the PC and using iTunes to sync it to them. Not sure about Apple TV. I think that might require buying a subscription to iTunes Match.

Can you get it to your iPad? You can try using AirPlay but it usally blocks copyrighted content, so the video might not come though.

It sounds as though you are doing something wrong or at least that something is going wrong. Are you saying that content synced to your Apple tv disappears every time you unplug it and requires resyncing again. Do you have to set it up again or does the content just disappear.

Do you mean you can't stream movies etc. You can only play media over Airplay, you can't share data from other apps.

The games need to support AirPlay first.
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

That largely depends on which iPad you have. The iPad 1 is capable of basic airplay only, later iPads are capable of basic airplay and airplay mirroring.
When using basic airplay, any content you play that is compatible will display the airplay icon in its control bar, when you tap this and select the Apple TV it will stream that content to the Apple TV. Unfortunately, not all apps and websites are enabled for basic airplay, in addition to which some may be enabled for audio but not video, however that being said the quality of basic airplay is generally higher than that for mirroring, and is therefore preferable if available.
If your iPad supports mirroring;
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2, iPad 3 or iPhone 4s, double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

As far as I know you can't, which sort of makes sense, it seems logical to pause whatever you are doing while you take a phone call, which after all is the primary function of a phone.
