Streaming from ReadyNAs Duo

Hi there,
Now that the Apple TV (2nd Generation) doesn't have any storage capability - does anyone know if it is possible to stream music, video and photo media directly from my ReadyNas Duo to AppleTV?

Only if that is where your iTunes library is. ATV2 uses the home sharing of iTunes to take it's local video, music and photo streams.

  • HomeHub 2, Xbox360 and media streaming from ReadyN...

OK, I'm fed up and perplexed with this one. I've had kit in the subject hooked up for a little while now. LAN is wireless and the NAS is hardwire connected to the hub. My PC can access the data on the NAS wirelessly absolutely fine.
I was under the impression that I should be able to access the media from my Xbox wthout the PC serviing the content via another app. In fact until yesterday I'd pretty much given up.
Then yesterday, I tried again - and lo and behold I was playing music and movies via my Xbox to TV and Hi-Fi, wirelessly, and no PC serving the content. On the Xbox guide, it could "see" the NAS by name, and list all media contents. Lovely!
This morning, the Xbox can't even see the NAS.
What's changed? nothing. Both devices have merely been powered off overnight. I've restarted console and hiub. No difference.
Can someone, somewhere, explain what is going on here?
If there is some config of the hub settings I can modify I'd happily try.
Ideally I'd like some direct help from BT tech support on this, but would welcome any solid advice from other customers too.
    thanks

    Thanks once more
After changing router settings to fixed IPs for devices, that is behaving ok. I've now also told the NAS to mirror that fixed IP setting. All seems ok there too. However the Xbox still cannot see it as a network resource, whereas my PC can see the NAS content just fine. I think the issue is somewhere in the UPnP/DLNA mix between the NAS and console. Oddly enough when I went to the NAS forum, I can stilll see some of my earlier messages where there are plenty of reads, and no useful replies! I might post once more as I cannot believe I am the only person in the UK with that BT hub, Xbox and NAS!
Was going to suggest twonky but have been beaten to it however, I had a similar problem and discovered what I had done was share a root folder, it wasn't the fact that the ps3 and xbox couldn't see the nas box, it actually couldn't 'see' the share. To solve this I created a folder say media created a subfolder called media shared that then added folders for pictures, video and music.
But I think that twonky would be the best solution and turn your nas into a media centre.

  • Can apple tv stream from nas?

I have a Netgear ReadyNas Duo. With all my media from ITunes and the Firefly-Mediaserver is working on it. Can Apple-TV stream this content from my NAS without an working PC?
    Thanks for your answers.

I will copy and paste what I find out, hope it helps you.
I have an Airport Extreme, but it works with other routers as well. Find out what communication standard your router supports. DLNA or SMB.
The Airport Extreme I use does not support the DLNA standards which most external drives like LaCie Fule or DW My Cloud use. I found out it supports the SMB standard though. So a quick search on the App Store with SMB as the keyword showed up a few file managment apps and the first I tried worked!
It's called FileExplorer Free and can access files on your external drive attached to your Airport Extreme. There were more hits but since the first app I found worked I didn't bother to check out the other apps.
I tried FileExplorer with songs first and it worked. You can listen to your songs with your iPhone or iPad or Airplay them to your Airport Express and listen to them at your home audio system. I couldn't hear any loss of quality.
It also works with yorur movies. Just select the movie and watch it on your iDevice or Airplay it to your Apple TV. Works with HD movies as well with no problems. Only downside was that the Apple TV can only display .mp4 files. Even the movies bought on iTunes won't work with the app and the Apple TV. So I had to convert a few movies using the free converter HandBrake.
FileExplorer works with other types of files like photos or documenst too. Oh and as a bonus: The FileExplorer app can also access your library from the DropBox or Google Drive. Works with NAS drives as well. Looks like you need the paid version though for those extras.
In case your router supports DLNA search for a DLNA app like 8player.
So finally I can move my big movie collection to my external drive and still watch it without the need for the Mac or iTunes to run. Hope this helps you too.

  • How can I subscribe to a Shared Photo Stream from iPhoto 9.4 on OSX 10.7.5 ?

I just updated to iPhoto 9.4 on both my (just updated) OSX 10.8.2 MacBook Pro and my OSX 10.7.5 Mac mini.
For some mysterious reason Apple specifies that I can not subscribe to the new "Shared Photo Streams" from my OSX 10.7.5 Mac mini.
    How could that be ?
How can I get around this ?
How can it be that Apple claims that 'Shared Photo Streams' can be shared to all my other devices, but it turns out that my major photo-database can't, even though it has a brand new version of last year's OSX running... ???!!!
This can't be a software issue...
because if that were the case Apple would be deliberately cutting off users of last year's operating system... (...I even think there is a law prohibiting that...)
so... can anyone tell me what the exact piece of hardware is that I am missing ?
or has anyone found a solution for this yet ?
    Thanks !

The only hardware that's preventing me from upgrading to 10.8 "Mountain Lion" would be the fact that a Mid-2007 Mac mini doesn't have a separate graphics card...
...as all other hardware-components ar similar to the iMac Mid 2007... :
    - at least 2GB of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM
    - a 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo "Merom" processor
    - a WiFi-N compatible AirPort-card (I've upgraded the one in my Mac mini to an Atheros AR-9280...)
    - OSX 10.6.8 or later installed (I have OSX 10.7.5)
    - iPhoto 9.4
...so the only spec I not meeting hardware-wise is the fact that my Mac mini has a GMA950 shared graphics card...
but surely... that can not be the reason I can't subscribe to a Photo Stream...
why would that have anything to do with eachother ???!!!
[ I've even seen claims of tricked OSX 10.8 installers for the Mid-2007 Mac mini, so if that's my only option... ]

  • Streaming from iTunes to ATV3 slow to nonexistent after 6.0 update

After updating to 6.0 my ATV3 and one of my ATV2's has encountered issues with streaming from iTunes (Computers) on my household iMac. I hadn't updated my second ATV2, which I used to test my theory that it was 6.0 specific. Streaming from it works fine.
My ATV3 and ATV2 are not bricked. Apps such as Netflix work well and all Apple purchased content play easily from the cloud.
Has anybody encountered the same issue? Have you found a resolution?
On a side note, my iTunes is 11.1 (from beta), my iMac is a 2.8 Intel Core 2 Duo and my OS is 10.8.5. Though I do not see this being any cuase. Again, my second ATV2 works fine.
    Thanks in advance everybody.
    _teunis

I have both an ATV3 and ATV2 after updating my ATVs are missing content and it is random what is missing.  Some material I have ripped and stored in iTunes for ease of use.  At first I thought it might be Tunespan but it seems to be working fine, and other ripped material apears and plays without issue.  I spoke to tech support who said this was the first call the had, had about this issue after the 6.0 update.  Interwstingly enough both ATVs are missing the same content which leads me to believe it is another glitch in the update.  I am from Canada so I don't know if the issue is being resolved in the US.  P.S. I have tried the second update for my ATV 3 and am still missing content.  The only option ttech seemed to suggest was a full restore via your Mac and a micro usb cable.

  • Remote Access, Airport Extreme, and ReadyNAS Duo, Oh My!

I am begging for help on this issue. I've contacted Netgear support at least 6 times on this issue, and called Apple support once, all to no avail. I'm posting this both in the Netgear forums and Apple forums to try to get some help.
Simple problem: I can't seem to figure out how to get my ReadyNAS Duo to be remotely accessible AT ALL (i.e., through any protocol).
This is one of the main reasons we bought the Duo, and it's killing me that I can't figure out how to make it work. I'm new to networking, and I can't seem to find anyone (include any tech support people!) who can actually help me with this!
I'm on a Mac, running OS X 10.5.6. I'm using an Airport Extreme router. I've got a ReadyNAS Duo 2150.
I've enabled FTP access, HTTPS access, HTTP access, CIFS access, and AFP access through ReadyNAS Frontview.
I've tried to forward Ports 21, 443, and 80 to the Duo's internal IP address (although I'm not exactly sure if I did it right... I filled in the "TCP" port fields, but not the "UDP" ports fields).
When I try to access the Duo, I simply type in the IP address (in Safari) that shows up as the IP address in the Airport Utility, and I've tried various configurations of that, such as "https://[IP Address]/", "https://[IP Address]/admin" "https://[IP Address]:443/" and the same things using FTP, AFP, etc. (through "Connect to Server" in the Finder).
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help me with this! It's been months and I just don't understand what I'm missing.
    Thanks.
    -Celeste

When I try to access the Duo, I simply type in the IP address (in Safari) that shows up as the IP address in the Airport Utility, and I've tried various configurations of that, such as "https://IP Address/", "https://IP Address/admin" "https://IP Address:443/" and the same things using FTP, AFP, etc. (through "Connect to Server" in the Finder).
When you are at home, you would need to use the private/local IP address which the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) provides to that device.
When you are away from home, you would need to use the public IP address provided by your ISP and used by the AEBS on the Internet/WAN side.

  • How can I see My Photo Stream from two Macs associated with the same Apple ID?

I have a MacBook Pro (my personal machine) and an iMac (our family computer).
The iPhoto library housing all of our family photos lives on the iMac.
The iPhoto library on my MacBook Pro is currently empty.
I have an account on both machines.  I have associated the same Apple ID with both machines.
When I launch iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and attempt to turn on photo sharing (so that I can see My Photo Stream, as well as other shared streams), iPhoto informs me that "iCloud Photos for xxx@xxx is being used with another library named 'iPhoto Library'."
My iPhone, which is also affiliated with the same Apple ID, shows the streams just fine.
What can I do to remedy this situation?  I'd like to be able to view my shared streams on my MacBook Pro, while leaving the actual massive photo library on the iMac.

I found out about this issue when I created a new library with some photo's I wanted to sync to my iCloud account.  I found the following on the Fat Cat Software page and thought it might be helpful to others:
Using Photo Stream with multiple libraries
Starting in iPhoto 9.2, Apple introduced a new feature called Photo Stream, which lets you automatically transfer photos via their iCloud service between your iPhoto library and your other devices such as an iPhone, iPad, or another Mac. This feature works when you have multiple iPhoto libraries set up, but there are a couple things to be aware of.
First, iPhoto will only allow Photo Stream to be active in one iPhoto library at any given time. If you've already enabled Photo Stream in one library, but then open a second library and enable Photo Stream there, this will cause Photo Stream to be turned off in the first library.
Any photos downloaded by Photo Stream are actually stored in an entirely separate location from any of your iPhoto libraries. This means that, even if you do switch Photo Stream from one library to another, you will not need to go through redownloading all the photos you already have in Photo Stream back from the iCloud servers. So, switching Photo Stream from one library to another is a relatively inexpensive operation, so you can do it as often as needed without it being much of a hassle.

  • App for streaming from network drive to Apple TV?

I'm looking for an app that can do several things. There are apps that I've downloaded and paid for >:-( that do one or even tow of these things, but I want to:
Stream movies (of different file types) from a network drive (WD MyBookLive) to Apple TV, via an iPad.
There are apps that will stream any filetype from a Mac to apple TV, but they need certain server software running on the Mac, so no good for me with my network drive.
There are also apps that will play any filetype on an iPad, streamed from a network drive. But these won't stream to Apple TV.
Is there something that does both, that doesn't require special software on the drive?
    Thanks!

    That's a shame.

  • HT3819 video stream from amazon prime to my TV

i want to video stream from amazon prime to my TV  via my ipad, mac book using my apple TV device..

there is no reason to get rid of Apple devices, not when a Chromecast, Roku, or FireTV can be acquired so cheaply.
This is a true statement, but this is a bad option in the long term since your content will be split between different sources, DRM rules, apps, access options, etc.  You are going to constantly be running into issues were you want to watch a show that is not available on the device (phone, tablet, etc) you are on.  I share "Disgusted_with_apple" frustrations in that Apple has not updated in three years now leaving Amazon FireTV and others with better interfaces and features but having my content locked into Apple's DRM.
Apple was really first to market with a viable TV interface device, and has completely turned the market over to its competitors just by not showing up.  And now ATV can not play content, or provide features that ALL of the competitors have.   I recently bought an Amazon FireTV and love it.  The only advantage Apple has left is the iTunes Store still has more content, but that is not likely to last.

  • How do I control photo streaming from my iMac to my IOS devices?

I have an iPhone 4, iPad 2, and iMac running latest versions of Lion and iPhoto.  I had photo streaming in the on position for each machine, and recently I downloaded over 1500 high res Nikon photo's from a vacation into iPhoto on the Mac.  I wasn't really thinking about the background activity with iCloud, but later I found that my memory was used up on the iPad.  When checking further, I found that all the vacation photo's loaded to iPhoto had photo streamed to the iCloud and been copied onto my iPhone and iPad.  Okay like duhh.....this is how it works, I get it now, very cool, now I have no memory left.  To make matters worse, there was no easy way to delete pictures from the photo stream on the IOS devices.....you have to individually check each pic to delete.  Lesson learned...I turned off the photo streaming from my iMac.
But, the way I really would like to use this is to have all photo's and/or video's taken with my iPhone or iPad to be streamed into the iCloud and copied automatically to my iMac.....but I don't want the opposite to happen....ie, when I download pics from my Nikon onto my iMac into iPhoto, I don't want those to stream to the IOS devices.  Basically my iMac is the major long term storage device (with backup hard drive)...I view my IOS devices as just short term storage devices, and if something needs to be saved it should up load to my iMac.
Is it possible to set up the devices this way with iCloud, ie, one way photo streaming?
    thanks ahead!

iPhoto > iPhoto Preferences > PhotoStream, turn off automatic uploads.

  • Apple TV: Sync with iMac & stream from PC/Vista?

Happy New Year to all --
I have my main iTunes library on my Mac (box iMac, not portable) upstairs, and I have been syncing that library to my Apple TV downstairs. The syncing occurs, and I can listen to my library through my speakers which are connected to my Apple TV. This is setup fine. The only thing I don't like is that the Apple TV's options for playback are very limited.
I have a subset of my library on my laptop PC (running Vista). As this is portable, I'd sometimes like to stream music from this PC to my remote speakers which are connected to my Apple TV. Then I can use the iTunes interface on the portable to make playlists, plan upcoming songs, etc. on the portable and have the music streamed to the Apple TV and out the speakers. This I cannot get to work consistently.
So, I want to sync to one computer and stream from another. I do not have to do this simultaneously of course, I just want the flexibility that the iTunes interface has to offer, closer to the listening area.
I have tried many, many things. Rarely I can get the PC's iTunes to recognize the Apple TV, but when it does, the streaming is unlistenable (consistent dropouts). Today I haven't been able to get iTunes to even recognize the Apple TV's existence. I have rebooted everything (incl network/router), made sure all SW is up to date, changed channels, made sure PC is looking for the Apple TV, made sure UDP 5353 is open, etc etc. to no avail. My network is 802.11g and the signal is strong everywhere.
I thought this was possible, even desirable, and I also thought that the days of lousy audio streaming was largely over, since video is now being streamed with some success. My network is busy (two tivos, three computers, PS3, Apple TV) but not using a lot of the bandwidth most of the time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

    David
    Multicast rate.
The multicast rate determines the minimum data transfer speed allowable for a transfer to take place, setting a high value may well make a more robust network but it may simply never allow a transfer if this is too high. I have mine set at 2 Mbps (although I can't be sure you have such an option on your router - sorry I thought you were using an airport.
    Channel
I couldn't suggest a channel, it all depends on which channels those around you are using, you'll likely need to try a few options unless you actually know what all the other networks around you are using. Other devices (cordless phones, microwaves etc) can also cause interference.
Is it common to be able to stream to the ATV (i.e. see it in the remote speakers pull down menu at the bottom) but not have it recognized as a device in iTunes (i.e. in the left column)? That's what sometimes happens to me.
I wouldn't actually know, I've never had any problems with networking my tv's, although network requirements for the tv and airtunes are not the same, so I suppose it's entirely possible that airtunes will be available while you are unable to access the tv.

  • Can Multiple AppleTVs Stream from the Same iTunes?

I'm about to receive two AppleTV units for my home. One for each of the main TVs. Can I stream content from one computer to both units at the same time? (I'm not looking to have different content played at the same time, just the same thing going to both units) If anyone has some insight on this, I'd appreciate it!

Chris is correct, if you stream the same content to two tv's it will be via two streams. You will need to initiate each stream from each tv so synchronisation will be difficult for you.
I often have 2 or 3 streams from my library at the same time, I don't have any issues with it. (My mac is on a Gb network with my tv's on either the same Gb network or their own wifi networks)

  • Can't Get ATV to Stream from iTunes

OK, I can't get my ATV to stream from my iTunes. when I initially set up the ATV, it synced to my iTunes. I actually don't recall any option to sync or stream, but makbe I missed it.
Anyway, the help says the following:
"Playing your iTunes library on your TV using Apple TV
If you have an Apple TV, you can stream items from your iTunes library to your TV. You can also sync your Apple TV with your iTunes library so that content is automatically loaded onto your Apple TV.
Syncing your Apple TV with iTunes
If your Apple TV is synced with an iTunes library, it is already set up for streaming. You can also stream items from an iTunes library that isn't synced with your Apple TV. You can stream from up to five iTunes libraries, plus the library the Apple TV is synced with.
To set up your Apple TV for streaming:
Make sure the computer you want to stream from is on, and iTunes is open.
On your Apple TV, choose Sources, choose "Connect to New iTunes," and make a note of the passcode displayed.
In iTunes, select the Apple TV with "Click to set up" next to it, and enter the passcode.
While content is being streamed, the computer must remain on and iTunes must remain open. If you stream content while Apple TV is syncing, the sync pauses until streaming stops.
You can stream from only one iTunes library at a time. To stream from a different library, choose Sources on your Apple TV and then choose another source."
    Now, here is the problem:
    1. It says "If your Apple TV is synced with an iTunes library, it is already set up for streaming." NOT. No where do I see any stream or share selection. Only sync.
    2. It says "You can stream from up to five iTunes libraries, plus the library the Apple TV is synced with." Again, not that I can see.
    3. It says "On your Apple TV, choose Sources, choose "Connect to New iTunes," and make a note of the passcode displayed." I don't have a "Sources" option anywhere in ATV. How am I supposed to select it?? All I have is a "Computers" selection, which shows me my current selected computer for synching, and another option to share a library, with a new passcode. But, only to a second computer, not my main one (where all the files are!).
I don't understand. It's like it's referring to some other device, with different menus. Now, I have ver 2.0 of ATV, and 7.6 of iTunes. WHAT IS GOING ON?
I purchased this thing to take advantage of streaming, for photos and video. I only bought the 32 GB unit, but even the 160 would not be bug enough to have all my photos and HD video. So, streaming is a must. But, it would be nice to also sync the music files so I can listen to them without having the computer on. If the thing functed like the manual says, I would be happy. But, it doesn't.
    HELP!!

Good news- this is all so much simpler that you think. (I know because I too struggled with it for days.) It turns ou that you have to do NOTHING to set up streaming with 2.0. Once you have synced your computer, just leave your computer running and on your TV using ATV you will see whatever movies you have imported into iTunes in the movie menu even if you have not synced them. The only way that you can tell that they are not synced is that when you select them to play the streaming bar will appear briefly at the bottom of your TV screen to indicate that it is being synced. If you turn your computer off the movie that you have chosen would not even appear in the menu.
Hope this helps- it is too bad apple doesn't give more info about using ATV!
