Streaming from time capsule.

My Apple TV 2 connected directly to my 4th generation Time Capsule and file sharing is enabled. My iMac is also directly connected to this router/TC and all of my movies reside on it's internal disk. When my iMac is off and/or in
sleep mode and I try to view a movie from the TC's disk the system pauses and buffers every 10-30 seconds. When my iMac is on it seems to work fine and it appears there is no need for buffering. Anyone have any idea why this would be happenig and is there a way to fix it?

Warning I am guessing wildly.. I have ATV1 running over network and it works very well. Running Crystalbuntu, with the crystal card.
The ATV has 8GB of NAND memory used as disk storage space.. so it is collecting files in chunks.. since using ethernet is so fast the download of one chunk is fast enough that the disk in the TC maybe has time to spin down. What I don't know is how much of the memory is applied to cache of the stream. (You are not really streaming of course.. you are reading a file across a network.. the only streaming that is happening is the video to the TV). Can you force the ATV to cache the whole movie before it starts playing?
What about trying wireless?
Did you put your hand on the TC and just feel if the disk is actually spinning up and down.. as stated.. I am guessing ... wildly.
Can you also stick a laptop or something onto the same ethernet as the ATV is connected and test the performance of the network at that point.. maybe the issue is poor network cable, and in fact it is struggling for speed.

  • Stream from time capsule to applte tv via ipad air

    hi,
im pretty new with apple...i used android before but im thinking about a change....
i want to stream music and movies/photos from a time capsule to tv and an av receiver via an ipad air.
is that possible? do i need a special app?
if so, how do i connect the apple tv to tv and av receiver?
    use a hdmi switch or
hdmi to tv and audio optical to av receiver?
    thanks!
    jan

You are better asking this is the ATV section..
The TC is useless.. it is a dumb storage of files.. no media servers whatsoever.
Nor can you use itunes libraries. You must have itunes running for the ATV to stream content.
You will need therefore to have files in some format that the ipad can read and use airplay to the ATV.
how do i connect the apple tv to tv and av receiver?
    use a hdmi switch or
hdmi to tv and audio optical to av receiver?
It is impossible to know without info on the actual av receiver capability.. but modern hdmi switching is built into the AV receiver.. you should not need another switch and you should be able to handle both sound and video over hdmi.. but if not that is simple to fix with optical.

    http://www.apple.com/au/airplay/
Notice in all this setup.. the TC is completely lacking.. it has no role in this. Anything you do without iTunes you do on your own as far as Apple is concerned.. and to play iTunes you need a computer running.. sorry but that is the result of copyright protection.
If you do not want to use itunes.. then buy a simple media player.. eg WD Live TV.. it can play content directly from Time Capsule.. because the WD is a proper player.

  • Slow Streaming From Time Capsule to Apple TV

    Hi,
I have several movies and tv programmes stored on my Time Capsule..... When I stream from the time capsule to Apple TV it is very slow and is constantly buffering. How can I get around this as at present the films / programmes are un-watchable.
    Thanks
    mbchunky

Thanks for describing your current network configuration for streaming.
In your current setup, QuickTime will first have to access the media files from the TC over a wireless connection. From there it will send the stream back to the TC. The TC will then send the stream to the Apple TV. As you can see there are a number of potential Wi-Fi interference issues along this overall path. Interference is not just from other Wi-Fi operating nearby, but also includes microwave ovens, portable phones, baby monitors, etc. Very importantly, it also includes the type of building material used along the path the wireless signal must travel through.
I would suggest that you do a bit of testing to determine what exactly the data throughput you are getting. Once you understand those values, we should be able to determine where the bottlenecks are and try to eliminate them if possible.
Please take a look at the following AirPort User Tip for details on taking throughput measurements.

  • Streaming from Time Capsule to Apple TV

I'm considering to purchase the Time Capsule. My purpose is to have a wireless HD with my complete iTunes Library on it and tstreming music and video to ATV.
Does anyone have exprerience with this set up?

I am assuming that you currently have the existing model of the Apple TV and not the latest just announced by Apple ... correct?
If so, you are already aware that the Apple TV can either "duplicate" your iTunes Library or can accept streams from an iTunes host. If your goal is to use the new Time Capsule (TC) as the location of the iTunes Library, this should work, but bandwidth performance will be critical, especially for streaming HD video.
To stream, you will need to take into consideration the path that the stream will be required to take to get to the Apple TV. For HD video, you will want this path to be Gigabit Ethernet wherever possible ... so ideally (but not necessarily practically) that would mean that the iTunes host and the Apple TV would need to be connected to the TC by Ethernet. That is because, the iTunes host must first contact the TC to access its iTunes Library. The TC will stream the data to the iTunes host and, in turn, the host will stream it back to the TC, and finally, the TC will stream it to the Apple TV. The path taken, of course, will change depending on the connection types (wired or wireless) ... and if you have configured the Apple TV as an iTunes speaker.

  • Stream from Time Capsule to Apple TV without having the Mac on.

Is it possible to move my movie content to the Time Capsule and stream to Apple TV without the Mac being on?

Only if the TC is jailbreaked.. otherwise it is dependent on itunes.. and TC  is a dumb hard drive without media server or smarts of any kind.
You can buy a WD live or lots of other media players.. but Apple locked ATV to the itunes environment.. to ensure you pay.

  • Streaming from time capsule to Apple tv using iPad

Playing movies I understand you do with iTunes over game computer or PC or iMac.
I have a Time Capsule 2T wired to router.
No wires to my TV where I have a Apple TV.
On the second floor in the house I have a PC.
    I also have a iPad.
Is it possible to place a movie on my TC and play this using the iPad and apple TV ?
Thanks in advance I'm not a computer expert.

I also am not a computer expert. I have a similar setup to you except I have a macbook instead of pc.
I downloaded an app called file browser on my ipad from the app store. it cost about $5-6 australian. In the app store it has a picture of a blue folder with FB written on it.
It is pretty easy to use.
Once opened, go into locations and click on the + button then put in the name of your time capsule. follow from there. I am not associated with the company, but I have been using it for a couple of months.
It has meant that I don't have to put the tv shows or movies on my macbook anymore, which was using up so much of my memory. Now everything is on my time capsule and i can play it on my ipad or through my ipad with airplay, play it on my apple tv. And I don't have to have my computer on to use it.
I have been stuck at home recently and have used it almost constantly. I'm sure there are other apps out there that can do the same this is just the one I found and it works.
I made files on my time capsule named - movies, tv, and aperture (for my photos). For tv shows I then made sub folders with the names of shows and then a further sub folder with seasons for each show. Mainly, because I can be a bit pedantic about filing but it also just makes it easier to find things.
This all comes up on the app when using it.
So short answer is yes you can place a movie on your TC and play using the ipad and apple tv.

  • Cannot stream from time capsule attached disk to Apple TV

    Hi,
I have my movies and TV Shows on a disk connected to my Time Capsule. All these videos are present in iTunes and when I want to watch them on my Mac, everything works great. The problem is when I try to watch them from AppleTV (2nd generation). Then, I get the error "There was a problem loading this content, please try again later".
I assume the problem is caused by either one of the two issues:
    1) The disk spins down after a while when not in use and/or
    2) The disk is not mounted in Finder all the time
When I play the video in iTunes, the disk spins up, is automatically mounted in Finder, and playback starts.
When I play the video in AppleTV, nothing happens and the error occurs.
But when I first play any videos in iTunes, and then play a video on AppleTV, it works.
So, is this a bug in Apple TV / iTunes Home Sharing? Should the video not get mounted automatically as well?
What's the workaround? Force the video to be mounted all the time? How do I do this? There's not such option in Airport Utilities.
    Thanks!

  • Stream movies with Apple TV 3 from time capsule

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If the content on your Time Capsule is in iTunes on your computer, then yes you can do that.

  • Restore from Time Capsule after Hard Drive Crash

The HD on my iMac crashed Christmas Day. I have been running backups on Time Machine to a Time Capsule since I purchased the iMac (and also backing up a MacBook Air), but never had any occasion to see if it worked.
I yesterday got the computer back with a new HD installed. When I tried to do the restore from Time Capsule from the Setup Assistant which ran on start up, I could not get past the initial screen. It kept hanging up on "Opening Time Capsule," and then on one occasion it found only the MacBook Air back up volume.
After some research here, I tried running the utility after booting from my Snow Leopard disk. This time, it immediately found the backups from both computers, but hung up on opening the iMac backup.
After more research, I ran the disk utility and repaired the HD on the iMac. It finally worked -- I woke up to a "Restore Complete" message (it started around 10:00 pm last night). The iMac started up without a hitch to the way it looked Christmas morning. The only problem I have noticed is that my most recent events in iPhoto are empty. The thumbnails are there, but no pictures. I tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but no luck. Any ideas?
The other thing I noticed is that I had to reauthorize the computer for my iTunes purchases. Will Apple fix that so it doesn't chew up my last remaining authorization?

think about the speed of wifi here
speed at 802.11n = a theoretical 540Mbps (less in real world scenarios)
Mbps = Mega bits per second
MBps - Mega bytes per second
    8 bits = 1 byte
    8 mega bits = 1 mega byte
How long would it take you to download a 1 gig file from the internet wired into your modem? About 10-20 min? And that is taking into account that the info is being uploaded hardwire. Now imagine that same file over wireless in your home being upload by the Airport card in your computer. People over look upload speed when considering these things. The wireless upload speed of your Airport card is what is limiting this. Just a limitation of the technology, not a fault of Apple just stating the numbers here.

  • How do i use a Time Machine from another computer from Time Capsule with multibackups

Can Iuse a Time Machine from another computer from Time Capsule with multibackups

Not sure what you are asking here.
Time Machine is software on a Mac that is used to backup that Mac to a Time Capsule hard drive.
Are you asking if another  Mac can backup to the same Time Capsule that other Macs are already using?
Or, if not....please clarify on exactly what you want to do.

  • Recovering data from Time Capsule after conversion from Snow Leopard to Lion

Had a problem with my iMac, which was running Snow Leopard O/S.  Data was backed up on Time Capsule using Time Machine, although recent back-ups had failed (but earlier back-ups had been OK).  Apple support determined that I needed to re-install the O/S and they walked me through it.  After blowing away all data (believing that once O/S reinstalled, could recover from Time Capsule), the reinstall failed.  Took to Apple store, where they installed Lion at my request.  Then tried to recover from Time Capsule, but couldn't do so.  Sparse file doesn't work (it shows 10GB, which is wrong as it had several hundred GB's before due to lots of photos).  Apple Support couldn't solve issue, believes it was corrupted with the last backup.  Ultimately recommended that I have professional data recovery service recover data from the iMac hard-drive (as opposed to Time Capsule).  Spoke to recovery service recommended by Apple, and it is very expensive (also, given the O/S reinstall, anything they recover will have new file names and no directory structure).  They also said getting data off the Time Capsule is even more difficult and expensive to recover.  I'm not a happy camper.
I would welcome any thoughts on what to do.  FWIW, I live in South Florida and there appear to be lots of data recovery companies locally, but Apple support had said that they have only a few authorized vendors that can do it without voiding warranty, so I'm reluctant to even call them.  Thanks.  Steve

    Your backups may be corrupted.
Try to repair them, via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Mount the sparse bundle by opening the TC in the Finder and double-clicking on the sparse bundle. Drag the sparse bundle into Disk Utility's sidebar, and do a +*Repair Disk*+ (not permissions) on it. If it finds errors it can't fix, run it again (and again), until it either fixes them all, or can't fix any more.

  • Lost the contents of Bookmarks Menue, can i recover it from time capsule

    Mac OS 10.8.3/Safari 6.0.
items previously in my Bookmarks Menu are no longer lited. Can they be recovered from Time Capsule, If so please explain how? Thank you.

Triple-click the text on the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Quit Safari. Disable Safari synchronization in iCloud, if applicable.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Restore the file from a backup that predates the unwanted changes. If you disabled sync, re-enable it and test.

  • I have lost my calendar data and am having a hard time retrieving it from Time Capsule. Can anyone help? I am using Mountain lion OS

I have lost my iCal data and am having a hard time retrieving it from Time Capsule. I am using Mountain Lion OS om iMac. Can anyone help?

You cannot see it because it is hidden.. one of those great things apple does.. if it is hidden in your Mac then it will be hidden in the Time Machine Backup.
You will need to restore the entire folder to a different location.. and unhide it.
There is some info here about restoring particular files or folders.
    http://pondini.org/TM/16.html
And some info from Lion which should also relate to Mountain Lion.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3231381?start=0&tstart=0
There is stuff about recovery near the end.
One wonders sometimes when Apple make these decisions if they ever think about what happens when something goes wrong. Hiding files..???
