Streaming Home Movies

Maybe I'm doing this wrong but in iMovie I created a movie and added to iTunes to show on my apple tv menu.  It is there but takes forever to buffer.  It's only 8 minutes long.  It plays movies I download and in "Movies" faster.  Is there a way to make the streaming faster or configure it better?
The same goes for iPhoto movies.  I wait forever for them to buffer.
Also is there a way to stop the remote from engaging my macbook pro's itunes at the same time I want it to control the apple tv?  It's an endless circle.
Thanks,
Brian

You may be suffering from a mixture of poor networking and high datarates, what are the datarates of the movies you export from iMovie.
If you don't want to use a remote with your computer the easiest thing to do is just to turn the IR off. (System Preferences > Security > General, click on the Advanced button in the bottom right corner - If the button is greyed out, click on the lock icon and enter your administrators password))
If you still want to use your computer remote then you must pair your computers remote with the computerAND the Apple TV remote with the Apple TV.
To pair a remote with a device hold down the menu and FF buttons together for six seconds or until you see a chain icon on screen (best take the computer into another room, or turn it off, when you do this)

  • Possible to stream home movies on iMac to iPad?

So I can stream videos–that I've bought and/or rented through iTunes on my iMac–to my iPad. But I see no way to stream home videos sitting in my iMac's iTune's movie folder to my iPad. Am I missing something?

Disregard, this was posted to wrong forum.

  • I want to stream itunes movies I've bought on my ipad air to my lg smart tv.  From the 'Home' screen of the lg, there is no itunes app shown that would somehow let me share info with my ipad air.  Has anyone the answer.  Am I missing something here?

I have an lg smart TV.  I also just bought an apple ipad air,Wi-Fi Cellular 16GM I've signed up the air to itunes and just purchased a movie on the ipad air.  I was able to stream the movie on my air and my pc, which is of course wirelessly connected to my smart TV.  I've searched the 'Home' screen of the lg to find a way to also stream that movie on the lg.  Am I somehow just not reading right and missing the point, or is what I'm trying to do not possible?

I have raised this issue with apple support this week too after my Facetime and iMessage stopped working on Saturday.
Been very interesting to read the ever increasing number of comments and issues being raised on this one (more than 500 views and dozens of replies so far).
    My post is here:
imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2
What is especially interesting about your post is that you had your iPad Air replaced in November 2014 in the UK. I bought my iPad Air originally in October 2014, and had to have it replaced in an Apple Store in Bristol in November after the original stopped charging. This does make me wonder if there is a batch of faulty iPads? Mmm...
I have raised a fully escalated support case with Apple on this, and their latest response is that a 'patch' or fix is being investigated by their engineers and to wait a week or so at which point they might be releasing it to affected users - or even across every users.
I wish there was a way to get this to Apple's attention and the wider media as well, but I don't know how best to do that.
I guess the best thing we can do is keep hassling Apple for a response and raising support cases

  • Can Apple TV 2 stream purchased videos / home movies converted to MP4 and in my iTunes library?

Okay, so we currently own a 1st Gen ATV and love it, however 99% of it's use is streaming purchased content and/or home movies etc. that I've used visualhub/handbrake to convert and imported into my iTunes library. All in all, once I gave up and surrendered my video content to iTunes and started streaming to my 1st Gen ATV I've grown hooked, I love sorting stuff however I want (I have about 250 movies, entire seasons of X-Files etc. that I've ripped from my own (LEGAL) media and put in iTunes, so when it's sorted properly it's very clean, when it's all alpha, it's a nightmare.
I've tried a few media servers for the PS3, however they just pile all the movies into one big alpha sorted mess, music isn't sorted by genre, no genius, TV shows are not tagged by watched, won't resume properly etc. Boxee / XBMC are a little better, but then again I run those on my ATV as well, and still Boxee doesn't really seem to sort stuff quite as well or play playlists properly.
We're getting another TV for our den and have been looking into other media streaming options, what I love about the Apple TV is the way I can sort all our movies, shows etc. by genre, so the kids can just go to the stuff I've tagged as Kids Movies or I can make video playlists for them and mix up some Planet Earth and Dora the Explorer for our babysitter and movies /shows are tagged as watched/unwatched, if you stop one it will ask if you want to resume, etc.
Looking into the ATV2 it seems like it's just geared for rentals, If that's the case I really am not interested. I like the Netflix option, but then again most newer internet connected TVs do that as well as my PS3, not sure how viable an option the WD TV Live plus or Boxee box is, I'd like to get some newer hardware, but I'm just not sure what route to go.
Does the ATV2 stream media in iTunes TV Shows/Podcasts/Movies folders? It doesn't sync right? So it it all Airplay now?
Is my best bet just to get another 1st Gen? Are there any other media servers that are able to sort stuff by played/genre/etc.
Ug, I'm at a loss! I really love the features of my old Apple TV, and would love to get a new one, but I'm just not sure if it will do everything I'm used to, or if any of the other standalone boxes are better options?
I know this is a bit of a ramble, hopefully someone can make enough sense out of where I'm going and help me out! Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.

  • How do I stream purchased movies to my Macbook Pro if I've already downloaded them and moved the source files to an external desktop hard drive and I'm away from home?

I recently added a number of movies to my iTunes library by redeeming digital copeis that came with Blu-rays. Due to limted disc space on my MacBook Pro, and for safe keeping, once I downloaded the movies, I moved the source files to an external desktop hard drive. When I'm home and I'm able to access that external HD via my home network, I'm able to watch the movies without an issue. However, if I'm away from home and I want to watch them, I'm not sure how to do that. I thought I could "stream" purchased movies from within iTunes  - even after downloading them - using "iTunes in the Cloud" but can't figure out how to do that, or it simply isn't possible.
    What are my options?

I understand that I can't play my downloaded movies when my external HDD is not connected becuase iTunes is looking for the downloaded files. This is not the issue. The issue is that because my HDD is not connected (as in when I'm away from home) I'd like to be able to stream the movies via the cloud.
If I hadn't downloaded the movies when I redeemed my codes, would I have been able to keep the movies online via Apple iCloud and watched them anytime by streaming them or must the movies be downloaded in order to be viewed on my MacBook?  I read that Apple allows movies purchased (or redeemed) via iTunes to be stored in the cloud via Apple iCloud so that they can be viewed any time, on any device.  IF this is the case, how does it work? From what I can see, it looks like movies can only be "streamed" from the cloud when useing Apple TV; on my iPhone and MacBook Pro, it looks like they need to be downloaded in order to be viewed.
Can someone clarify this for me?
Also - Michael - when you said that If I've already downloaded the film but I'm away from my external HDD I should "Delete the entry from the iTunes library so iTunes only sees the iTunes in the Cloud version", what exactly would this mean? Would this mean that I could then stream the movie from the cloud or would I have to re-download it to my Mac's internal HDD in order to watch it?
    Many thanks!

Thanks, Winston C, I've actually tried everything you suggested. I'm thinking now that the Home Sharing problem likely is related to Bonjour--I've seen several people mention this with similar (but not identical) problems. The solution that seems to work for some people is to uninstall and reinstall Bonjour. Frankly, I don't want to go through the trouble given that the iOS 7 release is imminent.
One thing that I haven't tried is resetting the ATV to factory settings. I'll give that whirl.
    Thanks for your advice!

If you wish to use home sharing then you need to setup the Apple TV under your ID.

  • Is there a way to separate home movies from the movies category?

I want to put home movies on my Apple TV but don't want them to show up along with movies. Is there a way to separate them? I haven't tried it yet so maybe they are separated but I foresee not being possible right now.
For the moment, I've been streaming my home movies from .mac

As Chenks says... just create a genre for them.... just RT-Click on the home movies (can actually multi-select all of then and do them all at once) and change the genre to "home" or whatever you'd like and then when you go to AppleTV go to Genres > "Home" and they will all appear together there.

    No problem.
This is a user forum so you are not addressing Apple. There's nothing to fix, that's how home-sharing works. There would be no way for the ATV to recognize your library and display content if the computer is in sleep mode.
You can always airplay from an IOS device or use icloud if you don't wish to keep the computer on.

My husband bought an Ipad 3.  He gave me his Ipad 2.  How do we get the home movies from the 2 to the 3?  I would like to restore the 2 to factory settings.  As I understand, from reading "help", videos are NOT in the Photo Stream.

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • Home Movies over Apple TV

    Greetings:
I have a significant amount of home movies on my windows computer in AVI format.  I want to save a copy of all AVI files.  I also have Quicktime Pro.
What is the most efficient (space saving with best resolution) way of playing the AVI movies on the Apple TV through home sharing on my windows computer.
Is it doing a save as or exporting from the AVI.  Can the AVI be streamed?  Thanks in advance...j

The Apple TV does not support AVI.
To have any certainty that you are converting your files correctly you should export them from QuickTime in an H264 format.

  • AVCHD + iMovie, best tactics for home movies

Hey all. Thanks ahead of time for your help. Even after a decent amount of research, I'm having a hard time figuring out some of this.
I have a late-2008 13" MBP (2.4GHz ic2d), iMovie 08, a Canon Vixia HF20. My previous camera (mini-DV tape Panasonic) imported into iMovie a consistent 6.86 MB / second at 29.97 FPS and 853x480. I guess we're spoiled by the small amount of hard drive space this uses up, since we have several years of footage (unedited) on my MBP.
My daughters like to look through the unedited footage in iMovie (as a player), so it has become kind of like iTunes for our video files. Plus, who knows when we'll have the time to do editing - i.e., no time soon, if ever.
So, we're just looking for a way to continue the trend with our new Canon HF 20 camera, a gift from the grandparents. (Yes I hear you laughing knowing what is coming...)
The HD clips are super small on the actual camera, but bloat up once iMovie imports them into AIC. I've read up on this already, so I understand why now. But obviously we don't have the internal HD space to store unedited HD video with huge AIC file sizes.
I tried downloading the VLC program that was suppose to play the MTS files, but it didn't work (probably because I didn't copy over the whole folder tree/stream files from the camera, I'm guessing). Is that my best bet to keeping the file sizes down?
I've been reading up on programs that convert the AVCHD format to MP4 and DV so that iMovie can read them (the conversion process takes forever). I guess I don't understand the benefit of this. If my iMovie already can import them into AIC, why would I need a 3rd party conversion program?
Or more specifically, does using a converter program to take AVCHD to MP4 retain full HD quality but reduce file size? How about to DV format?
I'm not wild about the idea of taking 12x the clip length to convert the AVCHD files into MP4, but if that will be a one-time "suck it up" process, and we'll ultimately have small file sizes (yet full HD quality), I can see the value there.
We're not tied to using iMovie (we don't even edit really, we're just using it as a player/organizer right now). *So I guess our goal is to keep file sizes down so we can (ideally) have all our unedited video on my MBP for view-any-time fun... all the while retaining HD quality if we ever (way in the future) want to edit it.*
Sheessh, it's just home movies. Got so complicated so fast.
I do have an ASUS G73JH (i7-720QM, Win7), and I read AVCHD is native to Win7, but I'd really like to avoid using the PC for the videos.

Thank you so much for responding. But my questions aren't really about archiving the raw AVCHD/MTS format (which I believe I can already do right now using Disk Utility or my PC).
The issue is that we still want to play/view the unedited HD files on the Mac, but need to keep the file sizes down (so AIC format is out of the question). I guess my questions can be summarized as follows:
*1) How can we simply view/play the raw AVCHD files on the Mac, while (a) keeping the file sizes down, and (b) maintaining the HD quality to do some editing in the (very) distant future?*
I tried the VLC Media Player program, but it didn't work (even with the entire folder tree from the camera).
*2) Does converting the AVCHD format into MP4 (or DV) result in a loss of video quality?*
My couple tests doing this (with AVCHD Converter program) took forever to do the conversion to MP4, but ended up with very small file sizes as well as file types that Mac could play. It was hard to tell, but it looked like the video quality went down. I have not tried converting to DV yet.
*3) If you are trying to retain the most video quality while keeping the file size as small as possible, is it better to convert AVCHD format to MP4 or DV?*
*4) Is the conversion from AVCHD to DV/MP4 quicker based on CPU?*
VoltaicHD, for example, says it takes 12 times as long as the original footage to convert the clip, but it didn't mention the CPU. If I did the conversion on my i7 quadcore PC, would it all go faster?

  • Streaming purchased movies from a local drive

Hi everyone.  I'm currently using the most recent Apple TV model, as of September 2014, with the most recent software updates installed.  I am not previously familiar with the platform.
I am curious as to whether or not there is a system setting, other than Airplay, that will allow me to stream my purchased movies, from the iMac on my LAN by default.  It appears that the Apple TV is streaming my purchased movies from the iCloud.  I would like to make the device stream the movies from my iMac, instead.  Is this possible?

If you are going to the Movies icon then it will stream your purchases from the cloud. If you would like to stream from your Mac you need to go to the Computers icon. Make sure home sharing is enabled on Apple TV and iTunes.
Note: all content would need to be in iTunes or on an external drive pointed to iTunes. Computer must be on and running iTunes.

  • My home movies take forever to load when using apple tv..help

Ive got a new iMac, apple tv and airport extreme. Regular movies stream just fine. I moved a home movie into the movies folder of itunes and when I try to play it on apple tv it takes extremely long to even load. I just switched the network the 5ghz but that doesn't help. Can anyone help?

Likely to be slow LAN connection - if possible try a direct ethernet connection to router to see if it makes a difference.
Have you tried with the old router?
As digital copies will usually be less than 5Mbps and standard def you don't need blistering LAN rates, but if slower than this they will need to prebuffer.
If not a connectivity issue (describe how all equipment is connected in the LAN and wi-fi type if any), then consider itunes library corruption (create a new library with a few things in to test) and also security software that may see repeated access from AppleTV as a threat and be slowing/blocking it (eg NetBarrier).

  • Home Movies not looking HD?

    Hello All,
    Here is my breakdown:
    iMac
    Canon HV20 HD camcorder
    imovie 08
    50" Panasonic Plasma
When i publish out of imovie to Apple TV(large file) then watch the home movie on Apple TV it does not look well, i see banding in flat areas....renting HD movies look AWESOME...why not for my HD home movies?
    Any suggestions?
Message was edited by: Scott Hennessy

Well simply put, I have the ability to stream the same footage exported from a PC at 720p to a 60" plasma or with the press of a the Plasma's input selector from the Apple TV at 960 x 540. There is quite a big difference in picture quality to say the least. If Apple is going to have a 720p ATV, it only make sense from the consumer point of view to make Imovie 08 and Quicktime transfer to ATV in 720P. This is why I bought it last week. So that my kids could make HD content on their Imacs (or I could on mine) and then play it in HD on the Family Room plasma without bothering my PC setups. Pretty simple concept really. I had intended to purchase several more for each family member to have their own content, but for now, I will simply continue to feed from a PC. When Apple gets its act together about ATV I will look at it again.... tomorrow , I will simply return the ATV to Apple. IMHO Apple doesn't have this ready to do what their ATV specification sheet says it will do... plain and simple. 960 x 540 is simply not HD period, not 720P for sure. There is a difference and ones eyes can plainly see it. I only bought the ATV because of its 720p support (or supposed support) combined with Apple's simply interface for the kids. I can get beautiful 720p results from my PCs, but I don't let the kids touch them, and I like the thought of making quick little Video camera to HD transfers on my Imac as well.
