Streaming interruptions

Recently I have begun to experience frequent interruptions (iTunes gives me "Rebuffering Streams" messages) streaming audio. The basic configuration I have is cable modem -> Airport Extreme -> MacBook Pro -> audio out (speakers), though the problem seems to be happening also though an Airport Express acting as a relay from the Airport Extreme to a remote iMac. There is no fluctuation in the green light on the Airport Extreme or other indication of its distress, but I cannot to begin to figure out otherwise where the problem is. I doubt it is the cable modem, as the same provider/stream powers phone and TV (and we see no such problems in e.g. streaming Netflix to the TV, which is a wired, connection to the cable service, not via the network). That suggests the Airport Extreme, which is now 3 years old. I'd be happy to replace it if I were sure it was the problem, but is there a way to confirm that's where the problem is occurring? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Mark,
Changing channels on the Express or extreme is not difficult.  You need to get into your Airport utility Application.
When you do, click manual setup, then click on the "wireless" button near the top of the window.  You you will see the channel window which will display either, "automatic" or the actual channel number you are operating on. Just click on it and it will display your choices.  Automatic allows the airport units to choose a channel randomly.  Not the best option as far as I am concerned.
If it is set on automatic and you think you are suffering from interference, you can simply unplug the airport device from its AC power source, wait 30 seconds, then plug it in again, the airport will then look for an interference free channel, and change to it.  (This is another way of changing channels)  I prefer to set my own channel, providing I know it is interference free.
I think you only need to set the channel on one of your airports, either the extreme or the express --the other should follow when you are operating it in the extended mode, which I think you are.  However, I'm not certain of this.

  • Constant rebuffering stream interruptions since 12.1.2.27 upgrade

Home sharing appears broken since I upgraded to iTunes 12.1.2.27.  An old XP desktop manages my large Library, although the actual iTunes media folder is on an external hard drive.  I generally share to a Windows 7 laptop in another room and to an iPad.  Since loading 12.1.2.27 on both Windows computers, I rarely get to listen to a whole song before the sound stops and a Window pops up on the laptop titled "Opening URL" with the content "Rebuffering Stream".  If I don't click stop, this Window will persist forever.  (By the way, when this Window was up, I couldn't navigate to this site - once it was closed, no problem).  On clicking close, sometimes when I hit the play button again in iTunes, I restart the interrupted song.  Other times, a Window pops up saying Opening URL, but not Rebuffering Stream.  If I click stop on that window, generally the shuffle play list is regenerated with different songs, but again, the rebuffering stream window is very quick to return.
The Music player on the (latest iOS) iPad (which has no local content other than the unwelcome U2 album) is a little more robust, but is also (even more than usually), subject to sudden losses of audio, paging quickly through the songs on shuffle play without playing any of them, displaying the play or pause button randomly without a relationship to whether the song listed is paused or playing, and requiring the sometimes 20 to 30 minute process of reacquiring my shared library.  Again, it's a big library, > 230 GB.

    Hello, bobzim.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are the best troubleshooting steps to go through when experiencing streaming issues with Home Sharing.
    4. Check your network connection
Home Sharing requires a home network with an active Internet connection. All the devices you want to use with Home Sharing need to be connected to your home network.
    In addition, verify that:
All your devices are connected to the same router, if you have multiple routers. Using multiple routers may prevent discovery between these devices.
Your devices are not using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), or that they are all on the same VPN. A VPN may isolate the device and cause connectivity disruptions.
If you have a router set up with a guest network, make sure all devices are either connected to the guest network and devices on the guest network are allowed to communicate with each other, or switch all devices to the primary network on your router.
If your computer is asleep or shutdown, or iTunes is closed, there's no access to the shared iTunes library. Wake up or start the computer and open iTunes to regain access to that library.
Your router needs to be up-to-date. If you are using an AirPort or Time Capsule, learn about firmware updates. If you are using a router from another manufacturer, contact the manufacturer to inquire about available updates.
    5. Check Firewall settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
For more information on ports used by Apple products, see Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products.
    7. Restart your network router
Restart your home network router using the method recommended in documentation from the manufacturer. This may include disconnecting the power cord for thirty seconds or more.
Note: During this period, Internet services such as a VoIP-based phone will not work, and any additional routers may need to be reset in sequence.

  • Steps to diagnose frequent streaming interruptions

I have an AppleTV 2, to which I frequently try to stream movies / TV shows from both a MacBook Air and an iPad.  Since a few months (hard to pinpoint when the issue started), we're getting frequent interruptions, where the screen simply goes to black and then jumps to the menu.  When playing from the MacBook, iTunes will typically give a spinning beachball when this happens (perhaps trying to restore the signal? unclear).
    Steps we have already taken:
    - We've checked the wifi signal strength on the AppleTV using the built-in check, which gave good signal.
    - We checked the wifi signal quality and consistency on the MacBook using iStumbler (after reading other posts here), which seems to show consistently good signal, no interruptions
    - We've synced a number of our movies from the MacBook to the iPad and played them from the iPad - no difference, we get interruptions no matter what the source device is
    - We gave the AppleTV an ethernet connection instead of wifi, which did nothing to improve the problem
    - We switched from playing the content on the macbook with airplay streaming to the AppleTV, to letting the AppleTV access the content through the MacBook's home sharing library - this seems to significantly improve the situation when playing from the MacBook, but doesn't help when streaming from the iPad.
I'm wondering what next steps we can take to try to diagnose what is going on?  Any tips appreciated.  All devices are running their respective latest OS.

Sounds like you already have diagnosed the problem.  Streaming video over WiFi rarely works well even when you have the high end WiFi equipment needed to support it.  In this case you are doubling the WiFi load by trying to stream from the iPad to the hub and then another WiFI connection hop to the ATV.  Stick to just using the ATV menus to select the content you want to watch.  That way there is only one connection instead of two concurrent ones.  You will also save your self a lot of headaches if you keep ATV connected via Ethernet.  If you want to use your IPad you can get the remote app and use it to control the ATV means to select the content you want.
    - We've checked the wifi signal strength on the AppleTV using the built-in check, which gave good signal.
That does not actually tell you anything.  It is just the strength of the radio signles but what you really need to know is the volumn of data you are getting across your connection and the number of dropped packets.
    - We gave the AppleTV an ethernet connection instead of wifi, which did nothing to improve the problem
But was the source device (iPad, MPB) still connected via WiFi?  Try it with just the ATV and the source device on Ethernet.

  • Music Stream Interrupts - Extremely annoying.

I am having problems streaming music to my 2 airports. It keeps being interrupted every few seconds.
Windows XP PC with 1 GB of RAM and a 3GHZ Pentium Processor
6.3 firmware for both airport expresses
    Itunes 6.0.4.2
The error happens regardless of whether I am streaming to both airports at the same time (with the new functionality) or not.
Strangely - the interrupt will sometimes occur on different airports at different times. In addition, if I have 'My Computer' as the third client playing, the interrupt can also happen on my PC.
I am not running any applications in the background.
The Airports are configured to connect to my 'existing network' which is run of my DSL wireless network run over a BT Voyager wireless router.
Would there be any benefits of connecting my existing router to an Airport Extreme (I have been offered one at a great price) as the basis for wireless connectivity?
I have tried the usual things like changing the multicast rate, the robustness and the channels of the stream. I live in a pretty small house and the airports are both in ajoining rooms.
Someone help me before I pull my hair out!

    Hi David,
Funny, I posted the same problem in a thread just a
little ealier... I am having the same issue, as are
many of us (it would seem). It may be an
interference issue or a communication problem between
the router and the airports (almost the same thing,
but the source of the problem may be different). I
too would be interested to know if I bought a APE to
replace the linksys if it would solve the problem.
I changed the wireless from g to b, which seems to
have helped (b has greater range), so give that a
    try...
    Mark
Thanks Mark. Will try that out tonight and see if it works.

  • Streaming interruptions (audio and video)

Sorry if this has been already reported but I can't really find a good answer.
I recently replaced my first gen AppleTV with a new one and have been experiencing audio and video drops intermittently.  When I use iTunes to stream music from my MacBook Pro the audio will play well for the most part but, every once in a while the audio drops out then comes back.  Very frustrating when you are into a song!  Likewise, when I stream from Netflix (which I do often) the movie will be interrupted, the screen goes black and the audio drops for several seconds then comes back.  When I stream Netflix from my BD player it works flawlessly.  Both the BD player and AppleTV are connected to the router via wires to a 100Mbps switch.  The MacBook Pro is streaming via wireless.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • Apple TV song streaming interrupted, very slow sync with keynote

When I try to play a song or a playlist from iphone (4S and 5)  or ipad (mini) via Airplay on Apple Tv, the music is interrupted several times, sometimes the first track, sometimes after 3 track, no rules. Wifi signal is good.
Other issue with Keynote on the iPad. I am trying to mirror a deck but it is very slow, I have to wait 2 to 3 sec between each slide
    can someone help me?
    thank you

Thanks for the reply. I used iStumbler on the MacBook Pro and could see three other networks besides my own, and they were all on Channel 11. Mine is on Channel 6 and, given there's no overlap between channels that are separated by 5 channels or more, there should be no interference.
However, the Apple TV reports more channels than iStumbler does and there's no way to know what channel they're on. (Hmmmm, maybe I should move the Mac to the vicinity of the ATV 2.)
However, my local network is involved when the MacBook Pro connects to the internet - I'm using Wi-Fi, not Ethernet - so, if the MacBook Pro can upload at 1MB/sec. to the internet (and that's throttled), why is it uploading at 50-100KB/sec. to the ATV 2?

Are you using iTunes to listen to the stations? If so, go to your iTunes preferences, click on "Advanced", go down to the "Streaming Buffer Size" pull down menu and select "Large."

  • Get a event for a new received rtp stream in a player

    Hi!
I'm trying to implement a RTP-player, that receives a AV-stream and play it. The special thing about this player should be, that even if the stream interrupts, the player wait's on the same IP and port for a new stream and open it in the SAME frame (not like jmstudio in new window).
I try to catch the "ReceiveStreamEvent", so i can restart the player, but i don't get eny events for this. I tried to do it with a "RTPManager", but i don't know how.
Does anybody has a example how to get the "ReceiveStreamEvent", so i know, the RTP-stream has been interrupted?
    Thanks

I am getting Error = 9006 when downloading a podcast, Derb Radio on TakiMag, but not other podcasts.  It started occurring recently, about 3 of the last 4. This occurs on both a Windows and Apple machine.  iTunes is updated.  It does not occur with other podcasts.  Then end result is that the podcast does not download.
I also get a "rebuffering stream" interruption during playback on the computer.

  • Assistance Required with Mac Mini & TV configuration

    Hello,
I purchased a new Mac Mini model from the Apple Store.
My current configuration is as follows:
    Sony Bravia – Mac Mini
Western Digital Ethernet 1T Harddrive – Hooked up to modem (in the same room)
Software download for Mac Mini: Plexxapp
All of my music and movies are located on the WD Harddrive.. And when I load the Plexapp program, if I go to ‘Front Row’, then ‘Source’ – It will read the WD Hardrive, but will seem to take forever to try read the contents on this Hardrive. Give me the ‘loading’ symbol and that is all I get.
Is there usually an issue when accessing remote files thru a Mac Mini (stream interruption) ?
Accessing shared playlists via iTunes. I also had a buffering issue when accessing music from a Mac in the Study. Is this an internet/connection issue or purely because there are too many music files & the mini is slow to respond.
I guess my question is: Is it best to hook up the WD Hardrive direct to the Mini for Music and File, or to transfer files direct to the Mac Mini itselt?
Ideally, I’d like to get the wireless / streaming thing happening before having to resort to plugging in the WD hardrive to the Mac Mini.
Out of curiosity, has anyone used Plexxapp before? How do you find it? I’m still trying to work out how to access movie and music files. All a little bit overwhelming!
Your assistance would be much appreciated.

If you launch Front Row, its not really designed to read content from your local drives that isn't part of your iTunes library of content like music, TV shows, and movies. If the content you have on your networked drive is non-iTunes Music Store content, chances are it won't be easily included if at all in your iTunes library.
Plex uses its own library and will sort and display your content. It is completely separate from Front Row. If you need additional help with Plex, you should consult the Plex Forums.

  • SRW2024 rebooting every 50 days

    HELLO WORLD
We have two SRW2024 which has a strange behavior. both of them rebooting exactly every 50 days.we face everytime a short outage of the network traffic.
    Model Name   SRW2024
    Hardware Version   00.03.00
    Boot Version   1.0.1
    Firmware Version   1.2.2
Is this a known issue? In the support section I found a firmware 1.2.2b. I cant find any release notes and I'm asking myself, if this FW version would solve this automated reboot?

    Hello Ivor
    thank your asking back.
I'll post the case number tomorrow. in the meantime I'd like to answer your questions :
Issue 1 - reboot every 50 days issue
    - Based on the information that was provided it appears that you have a syslog server. Does the syslog server log every 50 days a startup syslog message (for example: %INIT-I-Startup: Cold Startup)?
    >>> After I figured out the issues for the first time I configured the Switch for sending the mesages to our log server. yesterday was day 25 as I posted my last message. the Issue 2 happens and I need to wait now another 50 days.
    - How is the system uptime measured (which tool, how does the tool measure it)?
    >>> the system uptime is measured with cacti.net monitoring by using the SNMP read community OID .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0
    - Configuration of the device
    >>> the switch has no special configuration. just used as a plain (unmanaged) switch within a LAN. the switch is used in a audio streaming environment. we produce corporate webradio streams for our customer. therefore the switch is used 24/7 with a average load of 20 Mbit/s output on port g1 to the Firewall >>> WAN Switch >>> ISP Backbone
    - The content of the memory & flash logs
    >>>> I currently won't login again, because I fear of another reboot. the switch is in productive environment and another forced cold startup will cause streaming interrupts for our customers ! I try to access with a IE6 standalone installation from Multiple IE (http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE) and keep you posted on that
    - Is there some kind of automatic process in the network that occurs every 50 days?
    >>> no automatic processes within the LAN
    Issue 2 - fatal error
    - Which build of IE 8 is used?
    >>> the latest after updating from IE7 to IE8 (MS update function) : Version 8.0.6001.18702
    - Are there any plugins in IE 8?
    >>> just two plugins automaticly installed from Java are installed see below :

    - Was there any change in IE 8 from default configuration?
    >>> No
    - Does it always happen when logging in, or did it happen just once?
    >>> It happens just once. before sometimes I was not able to see something in the browser. the web management site stayed in blue. the same behavior as already reported here in the forum.
    - Did it happen immediately when logging in, or did it happen after navigating to a certain page / between pages?
    >>> I loged in and navigated to the System log site.
My boss wants to replace the both switch by HP ProCurve switches if this happens frequently. So I cant promise that we keep this switches for another 50 days. I'll open a case number anyway and keep you informed

  • Friends, I Need your Help

Now i'm trying to get the connection of an SMTP server through a socket.
The problem is , if i try to connect , i can't connect to the server.
But the second time, its gets connected. At the first, i get a error, which
IOException:Stream Interrupted. Second time its working properly, this is a major block for my development.
Another question, i have little bit confusion in ready() method of BufferedReader, after using the readline() method, a check is made whether the socket is ready for reading using the ready() method. why it is?
    example
    if((line=socketInput.readLine())!=null)
    response.append(line);
    if(!socketInput.ready())
    read = false;
    help me guys.
    Regards
    Sankar

I don't know why you would use ready(). In the code you provide it doesn't appear to do anything useful. ready() is not very useful for socket connections.

  • Storage / video embedding

    Hello,
I have a general question as regards embedding videos. I'm a Creative Cloud member and use the Adobe DPS Single Edition, can be that I switch to Professional Edition in a few weeks in order to be able to create multi-issue apps rather than only single-issue apps. So far, I've always embedded videos in my folios because only then you can watch videos anywhere also without internet access and you don't have to deal with annoying streaming interruptions and waiting times. I only have short videos, let's use an example of 400 MB of embedded video content per folio. If I do a multi-issue app with 10 folios per year, that means that the reader will have 4 GB of video content on his iPad from reading my app magazine. Is that correct?
Or is there another way of doing this? Are videos of older folios maybe stored on on the Adobe or Apple server or something?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

In a muli-folio scenario, the video would only be downloaded when the user downloads a folio. The user does not need to download all of the folios at once, they can pick and choose. For example, if you have 10 folios with a 400mb video in each, the user would only have the 400mb video downloaded when they actually download the folio. The user can remove the folio after it's been viewed and then download another in order to manage space.
Video are either embed or streamed. You can stream from YouTube, Vimeo, your own web site, etc.

  • Possible to stop iTunes DJ from playing continuously once started?

I'm sure it's been asked before....
Is this possible? DJ works well for queueing songs and the request feature is great. But can I stop it from carrying on and randomly playing, once the "song queue" or requests have come to an end?
    Regards to all.

If you lose connection with the stream due to a timeout, or run out of buffer, iTunes will move on to the next item in your library. If you want to avoid this, you should create a playlist with just your streaming source in it. If you select this playlist instead of the whole library, iTunes will just keep trying to resume connection to the stream if it loses it. If you see this happening consistently every day at the same time, chances are this is when your connections IP lease time is up. Is your computer on all the time (even in sleep mode)? If so, then try restarting it at a different time of day. If your interruption of the stream happens at the time of your restart, then the IP lease expiration is the cause of your stream interruption.

  • Playback (Streaming) to bluetooth headphones constantly interrupts

    Hi,
I use a pair of Sennheiser Headphones (MM 450 Travel) connected via Bluetooth to my ipad (Ipad 1st Gen, Wi-Fi 64GB with iOS 4.3.3).
I have absolutely no problem using them with content which is stored on my Ipad, like when I use the iPod application.
However, when I use applications that stream content from the net (such as Tune In, a radio application) or from a server on the local network (like Plex), playback is constantly interrupted. Further investigation revealed that, when Airplay is activated and output is redirected to the Bluetooth headphones, the ipad has trouble buffering from the network. If I disable airplay during playback, the buffer re-starts filling fast, thus confirming it is not a bandwidth problem.
Interruptions can occur every few seconds, or every minute, it is very inconsistent.
I was wondering if anybody else had this problem and if it can be solved somehow.

i also have the exact same issue with my ipad wi-fi 64gig version. sounds like an isolated issue with the 64gig versions only.
