Streaming iTunes movies to Apple TV with mid 2009 MBPro?

I have mid 2009 MacBook Pro with mountain lion and successfully stream movies in iTunes to iPad 3 and iPhone 4 via hie sharing. I would like to do the same to my tv via an Apple TV. However, lots of advice says that you need a. 2011 MBP or later to do this. I am not fussed about mirroring the screen just want to watch movies and listen to music like I do currently with home sharing on iPad and iPhone. Can I use my current MacBook for this? Thanks

it's probably a codec issue. do you have Perian installed ?
anyway, i recommend you use this app to convert the files to mp4 rather than mov. if you have TV2, select the preset for it.

I'm having the same problem.  It's not an issue with my TV, i've turned this feature off.  I've tried playing with the ATV display settings but nothing works.  When I stream netflix from my Samsung bluray player, I don't get the soap opera effect, but when I stream any video from the ATV, the soap opera effect is there.  I'm thinking it's a choice that Apple made, but I really wish it could be turned off.  Not a lot of people are searching for this, because it can be easy to overlook, but it's driving me nuts!

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

  • I want to stream itunes movies I've bought on my ipad air to my lg smart tv.  From the 'Home' screen of the lg, there is no itunes app shown that would somehow let me share info with my ipad air.  Has anyone the answer.  Am I missing something here?

I have an lg smart TV.  I also just bought an apple ipad air,Wi-Fi Cellular 16GM I've signed up the air to itunes and just purchased a movie on the ipad air.  I was able to stream the movie on my air and my pc, which is of course wirelessly connected to my smart TV.  I've searched the 'Home' screen of the lg to find a way to also stream that movie on the lg.  Am I somehow just not reading right and missing the point, or is what I'm trying to do not possible?

I have raised this issue with apple support this week too after my Facetime and iMessage stopped working on Saturday.
Been very interesting to read the ever increasing number of comments and issues being raised on this one (more than 500 views and dozens of replies so far).
    My post is here:
imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2
What is especially interesting about your post is that you had your iPad Air replaced in November 2014 in the UK. I bought my iPad Air originally in October 2014, and had to have it replaced in an Apple Store in Bristol in November after the original stopped charging. This does make me wonder if there is a batch of faulty iPads? Mmm...
I have raised a fully escalated support case with Apple on this, and their latest response is that a 'patch' or fix is being investigated by their engineers and to wait a week or so at which point they might be releasing it to affected users - or even across every users.
I wish there was a way to get this to Apple's attention and the wider media as well, but I don't know how best to do that.
I guess the best thing we can do is keep hassling Apple for a response and raising support cases

  • ITunes streaming Quicktime movies to Apple TV but without video

I have a bunch of videos I downloaded in AVI format and trimmed them using Quicktime and saved them as .mov file.
Trying to play those files using iTunes through my Apple TV results in a black screen (no video) - Apple TV plays audio only.
    Why?
Both iTunes, MacOSX and Apple-TV are running the latest software versions as of end May 2011.

  • Are there any plans to make renting iTunes movies workable, Apple? Or should I just use Amazon, BBC, Netflix, etc., which all stream HD?

I have tried twice to use iTunes rental. You have to plan ahead, preferrably the day before, unless you have a fast broadband connection.
    I don't.
However, my slow broadband connection enables me to stream instatly HD content from Netflix, BBC and now Amazon.
So, if I wanted to watch a movie on a journey, I guess downloading the whole movie would do the trick if I planned ahead.
But there are alternatives, particularly for those of us who still have DVD drives.
So, is iTunes movie just designed for commuters?
I think we should be told.

Thank you for getting back so quickly.
If I knew how to remove my post I would.
As for the problem, I don't know where to turn. Twitter, perhaps.

  • Macbook i7 to ATV - Airplay BOGGS and won't stream iTunes movies

I have a 2012 i7 Macbook 13 inch, and a 2012 (3rd Gen?) (it's brand new) 1080/WIFI/HDMI Apple TV. I have set up the ATV and updated all of the software. It is connected to my WIFI, which is fast and stable.  then:
-I started home sharing on my ATV/Itunes. My movies AND music show up on the ATV in the "Computer" section. I can select both movies and music, and all the media information comes up on the ATV.
-When I play music on ATV, the MUSIC loads and plays VERY SLOW and CHOPPY.
-When I play MOVIES on the ATV thru Itunes, they usually do NOT even load. The ATV tries to load the movies, but the spinning wheel (of death) is usually all I see. Sometimes, a movie will look like it is going to load, and play, but the it just sits on one frame of the movie. That is as far as it goes. The movie freezes but ironically neither the ATV or MACbook are freezing.
-AIRPLAY will mirror my desktop onto the TV, but that is as far as it will go also. The mouse will not even move on the TV. It basically just shows a frozen display of the screen
-I was using Moutain Lion when i first tried to get this to work, but i have since updated to Maverick, hoping that would fix things. It hasn't. NOTHING has changed. My iTunes is up to date. ATV software is up to date.
-It seems like this would be a problem with the network or the internet, except here is the strange thing:
-I can use my i7 HP PC to stream movies/music thru iTunes FLAWLESSLY. The movies and music inside of iTunes on the HP stream PERFECTLY thru the ATV.
This is really FRUSTRATING. I went out and got this new Macbook, and decided to use all MAC, since I love my iPhone and iPad.. and everyone always tells me how much better the OS on Macs are.. well, I'm not too impressed right now. I would expect ALOT more plug and play. I am very good with computers, albeit mainly PCs, but this should be alot easier to work. I really hope I am doing something really stupid, and someone knows a quick fix. I have searched the forums and don't see anything that was resolved from similar hardware situations. I don't get it.. Totally stuck... Could really use some help.. Trying to be a converted believer in the ways of MAC, so far, not going so good. It's been a serious headache.
Wondering why I even bought ATV right about now? I could have easily just plugged my HDMI cord into EITHER MAC/PC laptop, and accessed ALL the same things.. no remote I guess... but so far it's totally not worth the headache. PLEASE HELP

OK! I figured something out.. I got my MAC to start streaming movies and music finally!!!! It turns out that I need to shut off the WIFI on the PC that I am also homesharing thru iTunes on. I set both the PC and MACBOOK to homeshare their respective iTUNES, and they both simutaneously show up on the ATV. BUT... if I have them both running WIFI at the same time, while both signed into homeshare in iTunes, only the PC's streaming works correctly. (see above post for more detail of FAILURE) SO WEIRD. The MAC shows up stil on the ATV, but BOGGS down or fails to load files completely. As soon as I turn off WIFI on the PC, Mac streams perfectly thru the COMPUTER folder on the ATV..
    SO..
Can ANYONE please tell me how to use both PC and MAC on the ATV without shutting off one or the other? Or is that not possible? I guess it doesn't really matter, since I can only stream one thing at a time to the ATV . I like to keep both computer's WIFI running at the same time (downloading files in background), but I guess I can just shut off home sharing on the PC when I am using the MAC, and vice versa. Glad to know they both work thru the ATV. Haven't tried to use the mirrored display on the MAC yet.. gonna stick to watching movies thru the ATV's computer folder with my iTunes movie playlist for now. No need to frustrate myself anymore. Just gonna enjoy some technology for a minute.
I guess I have answered my own question.
Pretty surprised I didn't get even one response in 24 hours to my original post. This is my first time using any forum for TECH support.
I thought this post made sense, but maybe it's a bunch of jibberish. Or maybe people saw the word "PC" and didn't want anything to do with this post.
Truth is, the iTunes on my PC worked flawlessly with my ATV, right out the box, whereas the MAC was a little work to get going. Also, it (MACBOOK) loads content slower than the PC on the ATV. They are both i7 processors with 8 gigs of ram.  I still have yet to find something on this MAC that I can't do just as easily on a PC for a third the cost. I love the way the Apple stuff looks, and there are some cool things that MAC has gotten right (love the trackpad).. I love my iPhone, iPad, and now my ATV.. but my PC is still givin this MACBOOK a run for it's money. Just sayin.
Hopefully this post can help someone if they are in a similar position: in a household that uses both MAC/PC and shares one Apple TV.  Like I said, this seems to be working now. Fingers crossed. If anything changes I will be sure to talk about it.

  • Problem streaming HD Movies to Apple TV through home network

Got my new Apple TV yesterday but has some quirks. The biggest one is I'm in the middle of watching an iTunes HD movie I own -- streaming it to my Apple TV on my home network -- and the video starts stuttering halfway through the movie. It was playing with no sound, the video was jumpy, etc.
I stopped the movie, unplugged the Apple TV, tried playing the movie again -- I did this a couple of times -- and same result. This issue didn't happen until about an hour into the movie -- for the first hour of the show it played perfectly. Just before the movie, I'd watched an HD TV show I downloaded from iTunes earlier in the day, and was streaming this to my new Apple TV over the home network, and it played fine.
The other issue I'm seeing is it takes a looooooooooong time to load my iTunes Library from my computer. I selected my shared library, and then it takes about five times (or more) as long to load the list of movies compared to my older Apple TV (the previous generation 160GB hard drive model).
Is anyone else seeing these issues, and is there a fix?

I am having the same problem streaming HD anything, Movies or TV shows. It seems to try to buffer more of the video than when using SD video anything. When playing SD anything, it seems to start playing very soon after pressing play.
My content is on a spring 2009 iMac
    CPU 2.93 GHz
    4GB RAM
    OS 10.5.8

Wireless N (G,B 2.4 GHz) No G or be devices on network presently not switching to N only because iPhone 3GS doesnt 'support N.

  • View iTunes movies on Apple TV, no active Internet connection.

How can I view my iTunes movies on my Apple TV with no Internet connection? I have set up a local wireless network using an Airport Express that has my MacBook Air, time capsule and Apple TV all connected. I can view non iTunes movies fine. I have home sharing turned on and signed in to my iTunes account (both when connected to the Internet at my parents house.)
The Apple TV prompts me to authorise my computer which I can't do as I've no Internet connection, the computer is already authorised, from previous time on the net.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Where are the movies from, are they iTunes movies.

  • Why does streaming iTunes Match to Apple TV from iOS devices work fine but from my Mac Mini not so fine?

As the topic heading states... if I airplay anything from an iOS device I have no issues but from my Mac Mini I am plagued with problems. If I airplay iTunes Match to Apple TV quite often the sound will drop or stutter. I will have to pause the song and start it again.
Also I can be playing everything fine and then all of a sudden my Mac will lose sight of the Apple TV and the only thing that will resolve it is restarting the Apple TV.
Both my Mac and Apple TV and iOS devices are running the very latest updates.

  • ITunes Match on Apple TV with two accounts

    Hi all!
I have an Apple TV with two itunes accounts. One of them has the iTunes Match associated and I have sucessfully activated it in the Apple TV.
The problem is that every time we change the account I have to reconfigure iTunes Match again and it takes too long. Is this how it works or I am missing something? If it works this way it is not usefull for me at all .
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
Itunes match only works with one account and cannot be used with any other Apple ID.

  • I currently share an itunes account and apple ID with my mom and I want to create my own one now. How do I do this? Will I lose everything on my iphone?

I want to use my own email and credit card and manage my own account but I don't know how to do this and I'm hoping that I don't lose everything on my iphone right now.

    Hi Rileycarline,
You can easily have an iCloud account that is separate from the Apple ID that is used for iTunes purchases. Take a look at the article below to walk you through that specific setup process of have an account for iCloud and one for Store purchases.

  • Samsung hard drive problems with mid 2009 Macbook Pro

Arghh, this is driving me mad.
I'd like to know if anyone has installed a Samsung HM641JI SATA II hard drive into a mid 2009 Macbook Pro (mine is a 2.8Ghz) and, if so, how they managed it. The drive is 640GB. These are the steps I've taken:
    1. Swap out the stock drive for the Samsung
    2. Boot from a USB drive which contains a mirror of my system
    3. When the system identified the new disk, I formatted it with 2 partitions (GUID table, HFS journaled)
    4. Reboot
    5. System is very slow. Boots from USB but can't use keyboard to login
    6. Switch off and try again
    7. Remove Samsung drive
    8. Reboot from USB (works perfectly)
    9. Downgrade firmware to 1.6
    10. Replace samsung drive and try again
    11. System boots from USB
    12. Verify that drive is running at 1.5Ghz
    13. Disk utility and system profiler both crash
    14. Disk unmounts by itself and other random weirdness
    15. Remove Samsung drive
I've read endless reports about the firmware in this model of Macbook Pro and its issues with SATA II but struggling to find anything current and specific. Two questions:
    a. Is there anythign I can do to get this drive to play nicely?
    b. What drive should I get if the answer to a is no?
As a bit of background.. my system began playing up last week with lots of spinning beach balls resulting in forced switch offs. Booting from a mirror on a USB drive works perfectly so I concluded that the drive was on its way out. A drive test utility confirmed this. I'm now wondering if it really was the drive or the cable or the logic board.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Cheers

I'm coming around to the idea that this might be a problem with the SATA cable rather than the drive.
I currently have the stock drive (Hitachi) back in the macbook. It mounted for a while and was then ejected when I tried writing data to it. System profiler reports that "There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices."
I was able to mount the same drive in a USB enclosure this afternoon without any problems. Right now, I seem to be having issues with both the Samsung drive and the Hitachi drive - I wasn't suspicious of thr latter because I thought it was failing.
I found one or two accounts of other people having similar problems that were resolved with a new sata cable.
How does a cable fail? Could this be my problem?
    Cheers
