Streaming iTunes to my Hi-Fi

I'm trying to determine the best way to stream music from one of my Macs to an aged analogue British Quad HiFi system (with phono/rca inputs).
I do have an Airport Express which I assume I could use and I have a lead to take the signal into the Quad via the RCA inputs.  My problem & question is,  "is this the right route?"  because my wireless router is some 20+ feet away from the hifi system. The router serves 3 Macs wirelessly, and as I understand it, that I would need to connect an appropriate lead from the router to the Airport Express which is too far away. ( I would need to connect the Airport Express to the Quad system via its three foot long lead).
So I'm rather back to the drawing board at the moment.  I did consider buying the Airport TV, as my HDMI Sony TV is only 9 feet away from the hifi.  But I'm unsure what cabling I would need to purchase.  If, in fact, this was practical.
It's my intention to part company with my 300+ CD collection as this is now all stored in iTunes.  So I would appreciate some help please in pointing me in a direction that is feasible. Unfortunately, the hifi and my main Mac at at opposite ends on my home which doesn't exactly help!
Thank you.

That is how the Express and AirPlay streaming is designed, so it will work. The most optimum configuration minimizes the number and distance of wireless links in the path from the Mac, to your router, to the Express.
20 feet is not very far so the wireless connection from the Express to the router ought not to be a problem. The distance from your Mac to the router, which you say are located on opposite ends of your home, could be.
The audio cable length from the Express to your Hi-Fi is not limited to 3 feet. The one you have may be 3 feet but there is no reason you can't use a much longer one. I doubt the 20 foot distance will be a limiting factor though.
The best way, as you originally asked, is to connect the Express to your router with an Ethernet cable, assuming your router has an unoccupied Ethernet port. Even better would be to connect your Mac to the router the same way. That would eliminate all uncertainty. Those cables can be up to 100 m long. Having such an all-wired network may be impractical though.
It is impossible to determine how well wireless streaming will work due to the number of variables involved in any wireless installation.

  • Using Multiple Apple TVs to stream iTunes Music

    Hey there All,
I'm considering using multiple(at least 2) Apple TVs to stream iTunes content around my home. The layout is ranch style and I'd like to put 1 in my Media room where I have my main HT set-up and another in the dining area. Will I be able to have these act like Airport Express units and have same music playing on both, if both are on? I'm considering this as I often entertain and am looking for an inexpensive solution to a Crestron or Sonos system and I'd also like to be able to move 1 Apple TV unit to a different location like the Deck in the Summer & just connect my old boombox with RCA inputs.
TIA for any assistance or suggestions.

    Hey there BCFind,
Thanks for your response and good wishes. I've tried a couple of AE stations with limited success(dropping connection--still have them, any thoughts there? I'd appreciate them) and I would like to have the video option, have over 100 DVD rips stored on my iMac CD's external drive that play through iTunes(converted to H.264), a Netflix sub and we love the Jazz stations on iTunes radio. I use my 1st gen iPod Touch and Apple's Remote app with my iMac for music in my bedroom/office but, we'd like to occasionally also eat & watch a movie together as well have the music, get a 2 for 1-- music for entertaining and movies for the family. So, the original question... you're saying 2 ATVs will play the same music if both are on, in the same way that the Airport Express does?
Your set-up seems sweet. Thanks again.

  • Possible Bug in iOS 8 via Streaming iTunes Video results in lost storage space?

Hi looking for suggestions or help on this issue if you can.
I'm not sure if the issue is my attempting to stream a movie from iTunes under iOS 8 or if it is a result of the iOS 8 update (size) itself or some type of memory leak or inability of memory to be released back to the OS.
This AM I had ~4.8GB of free space on my 16GB iPhone 5C; running under iOS 7. I then updated to iOS 8 by connecting the phone to my iMac and doing the install through iTunes under a USB wired connection. I however I did NOT check after the update how much space was "Available" after the update on the iPhone itself.
While streaming a long movie (LOTR extended) from the iCloud through the Apple Video app; now under iOS 8, I received a notification that my Storage space was nearly used up. While looking in Settings\Usage\Storage I can see that I had roughly 250MB of space "Available" but only 12.7GB was "USED." Here is were things get strange. Looking into the "Manage Storage" section I added up all of the space "used" by the apps listed (Video app was NOT listed) and came up with a sum of 6GB of used space. Now why is that? The listed 12.7GB of used space is not equal to 6GB what is using up the remaining 6.7GB?
Now my research of the web suggests iOS 7 was ~3.5GB in size and my best GUESS at iOS 8 is that it is a16GB - 12.7GB = 3.3GB; although I thought iOS 8 was going to use up more space? For the sake of argument lets say iOS 8 is 5.8GB and my calculated Used Space it 6GB, that equals 11.8GB. Where are the remaining 4.2GB?
Keep in mind I added No new apps (albeit a few updates to FindMyFrieds, Remote, Pages, AirPort Utility, FindMyiPhone all to be iOS 8 compatable).  I also force quit the VIDEO app thinking that the video that was streaming was taking up local storage while it was playing. Is it possible that the memory was used up by the stream and is not being Released; hence it seems I have no available space?
Powering the phone down and re-starting it did not seem to do anything.
I still need to go home, connect to iTunes and double check if the available space on the phone matches to what iTunes see.
Thanks and sorry for the long question, just wanted to get as many variables out there in case anyone else has had this issue.

searching.4.answers . . . sounds like you too were able to "inform" your device that the content is no longer needed, great.  I posted a solution that later didn't work for me when I streamed another video (see my post dated Nov 1 - cjdmedia).  I then had great success using what others in this forum have suggested . . . I downloaded the free ibrowse app (do a quick google search for this and you'll find the website for it).  Sure enough it was a piece of cake to navigate to the iCloud assets folder and find and delete the video file.  That is my solution from now on.  Unfortunate that I need to do that to have my storage space clear.
Also in my post I shared that I thought this was a bug, unfortunately I now believe that this could be intended behavior.  The only question is how long does this data just sit there until it is removed by the system? or is it removed by the system?  If it is not removed by the system at some point then a strong argument could be made that this is a bug. Streaming means that data is not permenantly saved on the device, right?
My fundamental issue is that I have 16GB storage that really means I have a total of 12.8GB (so says my iPhone).  With no personal photos or videos, only 300MB of music, some books etc, and all the apps I want installed on my iPhone I end up with only 9GB available for anything else.  A typical movie in HD takes up half of that.  Not aware that the data of movies was being stored on my phone while streaming I completely filled up my iPhone only days after completely wiping and setting up.  When I got the notification that my phone was full when trying to take video of my kids Trick-or-Treating - I was infuriated that something was hogging the memory in my phone, perhaps I had upgraded to iOS 8 too early before known issues were eliminated.  I thought I had 9GB of space for pictures and video!  To be fair, Apple did not ruin Halloween because my wife had her iPhone.  I also know that this "issue" has been around since iOS 7 (based on my searching) and I haven't seen any confirmation it has ever been dealt with.  From another apple discussion forum stream itunes purchased movies to iPad I discovered that if your device is almost full you can still "stream" because somehow the system knows how much space you have and then behaves more like what you'd expect from streaming which is interesting.
So to wrap this long post . . . it is obvious that to stream there needs to be data stored locally, but it is unclear how much data and how long this data will stay on your device.  The quickest solution (requires a computer) is to use the iBrowse app and manually delete the movie files in the iCloud assets folder.

  • Lost ability to stream iTunes with airport express

I have a mid 2007 iMac using a Time Capsule for backup and Wifi and an airport express hooked up to my house audio system for airplay.
Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and lost the ability to stream iTunes to my audio system. External speaker icon and controls are still there in itunes however when I select it, it wont connect. Airport utility shows the iMac, Time Capsule, and Airport Express with green lights. Checked for software updates and rebooted all three devices to no avail.
    Any ideas experts?

  • Use powrbook as AE to stream itunes?

    Hi.
I have mac mini hooked up to home stereo.
In another area of house, I have powerbook hooked up to other speakers.
I'd like to listen to the same iTune/audiobook/CD in multiple rooms as I move from room to room.
Essentially, I want to use the powerbook (and speakers hooked to it) as an airport express "airtunes" set up.
Is there a way to do this?

Sorry, but no. You will need an AirPort Express Base Station to stream iTunes using AirTunes.

I'm an administrator and I'm trying to identify who is streaming iTunes from their Macs/PC's The Users are now clever enough to name their shared music something other than their actual name. I'm at a loss and any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

As far as I am aware, there is no way to prevent you subscribing.
However, I'm now regretting that post since we permit our own office to stream if they want to - also listen in to internet radio, etc. Happy people are productive people - and surprising how many new people have made friends via finding out like minded music lovers. What's the difference between playing their own music as against playing someone elses?...

  • Best Practices for Using Airport Express to Stream iTunes via Ethernet

So I've been reading various posts about using Airport Express to stream iTunes and I've been reading various posts about using the Ethernet port on the Express. However, not sure I've yet found an inclusive listing of settings for both. Wondering if anyone out there has such a thing?
I have an (older) Aiport Express (802.11g, no 'n') running the latest Firmware (6.3, I believe). I have it lashed into my switch via a Cat 6 cable and the 3.5 stereo mini running out to RCA jacks into my RussSound (home audio system) amp. I'd like to make the Express ONLY a iTunes streaming device getting its network link over Ethernet (AirTunes). So, what does everyone suggest for best settings for turning on the Ethernet, turning off the WiFi and running AirTunes?
    Thanks much in advance!
    cheers
    cp root

Airport > Wireless > Wireless mode "off"
Internet > Internet connection > Connect using "Ethernet", Configure IPv4 "via DHCP"
    Music > Enable Airtunes
Enable Airtunes over Ethernet (if this choice appears).
When I first did this, the remote speakers didn't appear in iTunes. I poked around to see what I missed and couldn't find anything wrong, but the next time I ran iTunes the remote speakers appeared.
If you run into a firewall problem, make sure your OS X firewall is configured to "set access for specific services and applications": http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/18503.html
Firmware 6.3 is correct for your Express.

  • Stream iTunes from Mac to iPhone

    Hi
I want to stream iTunes via Wi-fi from my Mac to my iPhone and have both playing at the same time, so that I can have music playing via the Mac in one room and that same music playing simultaneously on my phone in another.
I have set up Home Sharing and can stream from my Mac to my iPhone but I want both playing at the same time. I don't have Airport Express, so I'm gusseing AirPlay isn't an option.
    Hope someone can help!
    Many thanks

  • How can I stream iTunes Radio in my business?

How can I stream iTunes Radio in my business?

You can't stream from the Apple TV to multiple speakers, however you can do that from iTunes on a computer. You will need AirPlay enabled speakers or speakers that are connected to an airplay enabled device such as an airport express.

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • Stream iTunes & Internet Ethernet Connection

I have an AE and I currently stream iTunes with it. It's located at my stereo in my living room.
I have added a BlueRay player to my home entertainment system and I now would like to activate the ethernet connector on the AE so I can get internet and connect to the BlueRay player.
Specifically how would i do this?
    Thank you

In order to enable the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port will depend on which model (802.11g or 802.11n) that you have.
You would basically have three options:
o Wireless Distribution System (WDS) (available for both models)
    o Extend a wireless network (802.11n only)
    o ProxySTA (802.11n only)
For either of the first two options the existing wireless router needs to be another 802.11g or 802.11n AirPort. The last option can work with either AirPort or non-AirPort routers.

  • Airport Express streaming iTunes from Time Capsule

This may seem redundant to other topics, however I have tried the solutions listed without relief. I bought and installed a Time Capsule. My internet connection comes into it and my iMac accesses it wirelessly. I have an Airport Express which I want in the living room to stream music.
I have hard reset to the default settings on the AE. My TC is set for "extend a network" and my iTunes is set-up to look for remote speakers. When I use Airport Express to set the AE to access the TC network, I get the confirmation that the AE has been reconfigured and that I can wait for the AE to restart. The Airport Express dialog box never gets past that point, leaving me looking at a spinning status wheel.
From the default settings, my Airport Utility can see both devices, but clicking on the AE dismounts the TC and vice versa. The status bar on the Airport toolbar sees my TC network and not the AE, which I assume would be normal if the AE joined the TC network. Everything up and running, my iTunes cannot see the AE and I do not get the remote speaker dialog box in iTunes.
It seems to me there should be a simple process to walk through such a generic situation. What am I missing?

I have hard reset to the default settings on the AE. My TC is set for "extend a network" and my iTunes is set-up to look for remote speakers. When I use Airport Express to set the AE to access the TC network, I get the confirmation that the AE has been reconfigured and that I can wait for the AE to restart. The Airport Express dialog box never gets past that point, leaving me looking at a spinning status wheel.
If your goal for the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is just for streaming iTunes, then you want to configure it to "join" the TC's wireless network ... not to extend it. So enabling "extend a network" on the TC would not be necessary.
To configure the AX to join the TC's wireless network and for AirTunes, please compare the following settings to those currently enabled on the AX:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing TC's wireless Network Name>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
