  • Possible Bug in iOS 8 via Streaming iTunes Video results in lost storage space?

Hi looking for suggestions or help on this issue if you can.
I'm not sure if the issue is my attempting to stream a movie from iTunes under iOS 8 or if it is a result of the iOS 8 update (size) itself or some type of memory leak or inability of memory to be released back to the OS.
This AM I had ~4.8GB of free space on my 16GB iPhone 5C; running under iOS 7. I then updated to iOS 8 by connecting the phone to my iMac and doing the install through iTunes under a USB wired connection. I however I did NOT check after the update how much space was "Available" after the update on the iPhone itself.
While streaming a long movie (LOTR extended) from the iCloud through the Apple Video app; now under iOS 8, I received a notification that my Storage space was nearly used up. While looking in Settings\Usage\Storage I can see that I had roughly 250MB of space "Available" but only 12.7GB was "USED." Here is were things get strange. Looking into the "Manage Storage" section I added up all of the space "used" by the apps listed (Video app was NOT listed) and came up with a sum of 6GB of used space. Now why is that? The listed 12.7GB of used space is not equal to 6GB what is using up the remaining 6.7GB?
Now my research of the web suggests iOS 7 was ~3.5GB in size and my best GUESS at iOS 8 is that it is a16GB - 12.7GB = 3.3GB; although I thought iOS 8 was going to use up more space? For the sake of argument lets say iOS 8 is 5.8GB and my calculated Used Space it 6GB, that equals 11.8GB. Where are the remaining 4.2GB?
Keep in mind I added No new apps (albeit a few updates to FindMyFrieds, Remote, Pages, AirPort Utility, FindMyiPhone all to be iOS 8 compatable).  I also force quit the VIDEO app thinking that the video that was streaming was taking up local storage while it was playing. Is it possible that the memory was used up by the stream and is not being Released; hence it seems I have no available space?
Powering the phone down and re-starting it did not seem to do anything.
I still need to go home, connect to iTunes and double check if the available space on the phone matches to what iTunes see.
Thanks and sorry for the long question, just wanted to get as many variables out there in case anyone else has had this issue.

searching.4.answers . . . sounds like you too were able to "inform" your device that the content is no longer needed, great.  I posted a solution that later didn't work for me when I streamed another video (see my post dated Nov 1 - cjdmedia).  I then had great success using what others in this forum have suggested . . . I downloaded the free ibrowse app (do a quick google search for this and you'll find the website for it).  Sure enough it was a piece of cake to navigate to the iCloud assets folder and find and delete the video file.  That is my solution from now on.  Unfortunate that I need to do that to have my storage space clear.
Also in my post I shared that I thought this was a bug, unfortunately I now believe that this could be intended behavior.  The only question is how long does this data just sit there until it is removed by the system? or is it removed by the system?  If it is not removed by the system at some point then a strong argument could be made that this is a bug. Streaming means that data is not permenantly saved on the device, right?
My fundamental issue is that I have 16GB storage that really means I have a total of 12.8GB (so says my iPhone).  With no personal photos or videos, only 300MB of music, some books etc, and all the apps I want installed on my iPhone I end up with only 9GB available for anything else.  A typical movie in HD takes up half of that.  Not aware that the data of movies was being stored on my phone while streaming I completely filled up my iPhone only days after completely wiping and setting up.  When I got the notification that my phone was full when trying to take video of my kids Trick-or-Treating - I was infuriated that something was hogging the memory in my phone, perhaps I had upgraded to iOS 8 too early before known issues were eliminated.  I thought I had 9GB of space for pictures and video!  To be fair, Apple did not ruin Halloween because my wife had her iPhone.  I also know that this "issue" has been around since iOS 7 (based on my searching) and I haven't seen any confirmation it has ever been dealt with.  From another apple discussion forum stream itunes purchased movies to iPad I discovered that if your device is almost full you can still "stream" because somehow the system knows how much space you have and then behaves more like what you'd expect from streaming which is interesting.
So to wrap this long post . . . it is obvious that to stream there needs to be data stored locally, but it is unclear how much data and how long this data will stay on your device.  The quickest solution (requires a computer) is to use the iBrowse app and manually delete the movie files in the iCloud assets folder.

  • How to stream the same VIDEO from iTunes to multiple Apple TVs simultaneously?

I'm trying to stream the same video/movie from iTunes 10.5.2 under Mac OS X 10.7.2 to 2 Apple TVs simultaneously so that they are in sync. We have 2 TVs in our cafe and are trying to send the pre-service video announcements to both screen wirelessly.
Audio is no problem as I just choose the Multiple Speakers option on the AirPlay icon at the bottom right of iTunes. However, when I choose a video, the Multiple option is not available. I know I can go into the Apple TV menu and choose the video from my Mac that has Home Sharing activated but it is virtually impossible to get the videos synced on both screens.
Is there something I'm missing or is a 3rd party application available that will do this?
Please read what I'm trying to do carefully before responding.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Derek

I'm also struggling with this.  I have a Mac Mini and 5 ATV2's that I want to stream video content to simultaneously.

  • Streaming iTunes video across network

    Hello!
I ripped one of my DVDs to my hard drive and converted it to a Quicktime movie using the H264 codec. Now i would like to stream the video using Airport and Front Row. When I try to access the video in Front Row, there is an error message saying it can't play the video. Am I missing something? The video can be played in iTunes, but not on the other computer.
    Thanks for your help!

    More tests have revealed:
    (1) Sharing videos from my second mac, a MacBook Pro, to the iPad Videos app works fine.
    (2) When i switched to a small, test iTunes Library on the iMac and tried Sharing with the iPad app, that worked fine, too.
    (3) However, using my main iTunes Library on the iMac still gives me a problem when trying to share videos to the iPad app. That problem persisted even though I removed all videos that didn't come from the iTunes Store from that main library. I tried downloading all my iTunes store movies and TV shows to the iMac, but that didn't help. Nor did reverting all those videos back to the iCloud, such that non of iTunes's videos were seen as physically present on the iMac.
I am now in the midst of re-creating my main iTunes Library file, using the "iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists" procedure found at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451. More later ...

  • Streaming video requires Safari 4 or 5 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

"Streaming video requires Safari 4 or 5 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Safari on iOS 3 or later." it says on the keynote streaming video page. My iMac is not even 2 years old and they cut us out already? I've got Safari 5 and I've got leopard running. I understand that technology evolves but has there been a dramatic change in the way video is compiled for streaming or something?
    I do not like this.

This is just a user to user discussion. If you have a two year old Mac, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard for just $29.95. Mind you, that might make other software not work, so read this FAQ*:

Not all streaming video sites requires these specs. Any that do are limiting their own accessibility and customers. Read this website:

  • ITunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from an external drive (or streamed from other wireless devices). Any solution in sight?

Video streaming of DRM movies, purchased from iTunes and other vendors, to any iOS device is not working.

I am not sure if you really understand the issue at hand. Possibly that you are just scanning, not reading the whole text, or simply that you just want to close a thread with your last words or derail it for whatever strange reason. So far you have been more destructive than helpful, but again this could be ignorance at best.
If you would have had the decency to read the entire thread you would have come to the conclusion that every manufacturer, I came across, has posted FAQ's to this issue but Apple. Find a short excerpt below:
SeaGate  http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/006135en?language=en_US <http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/006135en?language=en_US> Playing DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected movies in Seagate Media App Information regarding remote streaming of DRM protected movies. Most forms of DRM (Digital Rights Management) will prevent playing movies on unauthorized devices or from remote storage hosted on wireless drives or NAS drives(Seagate Wireless, Seagate Wireless Plus, Seagate Central or Seagate Personal Cloud). Movies purchased from iTunes can be streamed to iOS 6 and iOS 7 devices which were authorized from remote storage (the video could be selected in Seagate Media App and would be played in a Safari browser), however in iOS 8 this has stopped working. A bug has been filed with Apple, however this functionality has not been restored. Therefore, DRM protected movies purchased on iTunes can no longer be played on devices running iOS 8.
SanDisk  http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16668/kw/itunes <http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16668/kw/itunes> Videos purchased or rented from iTunes will not play in iOS 8 The SanDisk Wireless Media Drive and Wireless Flash Drive support streaming of DRM protected iTunes purchased movie content to authorized devices in iOS 6 and iOS 7 ONLY. The DRM protected content is opened in Safari where the DRM is decrypted and the video is played. iOS 8 issue In iOS 8 Apple device has NOT enabled Safari based DRM decryption. Therefore DRM protected content, i.e. purchased movies or TV shows from iTunes, CANNOT be streamed from the Media Drive/WFD in iOS 8. This issue has been reported to Apple. We do not have any estimated date when Safari will support DRM decryption of iTunes purchased content.

With the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive and its companion app, you're free to share and stream high-definition content between your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Mac devices without a cable connection. Simply connect wirelessly from your iOS device to the media drive and instantly stream your HD movies, browse photos and listen to music from around the house or on the go, while avoiding the common hassles of cables, attachment limits or Internet availability

Here are the remaining issues that we are aware of in the iOS 8 general release: • Video streaming of DRM movies (purchased from iTunes and other vendors): iTunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from AirStash (or streamed from other wireless devices). These movies are digitally protected and the AirStash app sends them to the Safari browser to play (which works for all prior iOS versions). However, in iOS 8, Safari will no longer allow DRM movies to play. These movies will play when the video is transferred to the iPhone/iPad and played in the Apple's Video App or the corresponding App from the vendor.

If this is the case and Apple will not address this issue or fix it since Apple believes that movies should be protected this way, you need to let the community know that movies are restricted this way. Re: Streaming itunes DRM movies to safari on iPad not working - IOS 8 issue? [ Edited ] Options 11-06-2014 03:19 PM - edited 11-06-2014 03:22 PM Actually, this is not something we can NOT fix. It appears that Apple finally fixed an issue they had with their movie DRMs. The files should have never played in the first place. • HT201335 I want to watch an iTunes rental video on my MacBook Pro but stream the sound to my Airport Express linked speakers.  However re Airplay icon doesn't show up in iTunes when playing the rental video.  Is there a way around that?

I want to watch an iTunes rental video on my MacBook Pro but AirPlay the audio to my AirPort Express linked speakers.  However the AirPlay icon isn't available when arching the rental video in iTunes.   Is there another way?  Do I need to but an AppleTV?  I don't own a TV, hence why I want to watch on my MacBook Pro.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
With or without an Apple TV you can't send video to one device and audio to another using AirPlay.

  • Airplay only streaming audio portion from iTunes music videos

    ip5, ipad2 & 3 all current f/w & Apple TV2 :
Just all working correctly a little over a month or so ago.  Now, can only get audio portion from music videos when Itunes Match is turned ON.  Downloading music videos to local device & turning off Match on said device allows for proper a/v playback.  Other: going into itunes/purchases and clicking on any purchased video will properly play to ATV2.  Videos played via safari, youtube, other apps, also play just fine.
I've rest all devices, including router, nothing.  Also restored AV2 & ipad3 just to make sure that the most recent firmware update to all devices was not the cause; result still the same.  Friend attempted to play a music video they had on their iphone4/ipad2 and they too couldn't play a purchased iTunes Music Video properly.
Airplay is turned on on all devices.
Do people think this is a bug in the backend of Match or other?  any help would be great, thank you.

What you want to do is, unfortunately, not possible. If you want to listen to just the audio for those songs you'll have to buy the audio tracks.
    Regards,

  • Streaming iTunes no pc

Ok so I have my iPad and I don't want to use iTunes on my pc. I would like to purchase 100 videos from iTunes
And stream them to my tv. I don't think my 16gb iPad will hold all these films.
So where do I store them
How do they get from my iPad to wherever they go
Can I stream to my tv from this storage place
Can I choose 4 or 5 movies and drop them on my iPad  for when I go on holidays
Is there an apple solution for this please
    Thanks

all of the above is a virtually impossible combination. you are right about the iPad not being able to hold all the movies. you could purchase 100 movies in batches, but then you would need to transfer the 1st batch to a storage location to make room for the 2nd.
for that (at least) you will need iTunes. however, you wouldn't need iTunes to run on your computer to stream them to your TV afterwards. more later.
So where do I store them
again, iTunes will be required to transfer the movies from iPad to the storage locations. options include
    a NAS
an external USB drive connected to an airport extreme
    a time capsule
Is there an apple solution for this please
see above. besides the iPad, the network storage, and the Apple TV, you'd need the FileBrowser app on the iPad, which will allow you to stream the movies stored on either above mentioned solutions to Apple TV by way of AirPlay without iTunes running or your computer being turned on.

  • Using Multiple Apple TVs to stream iTunes Music

    Hey there All,
I'm considering using multiple(at least 2) Apple TVs to stream iTunes content around my home. The layout is ranch style and I'd like to put 1 in my Media room where I have my main HT set-up and another in the dining area. Will I be able to have these act like Airport Express units and have same music playing on both, if both are on? I'm considering this as I often entertain and am looking for an inexpensive solution to a Crestron or Sonos system and I'd also like to be able to move 1 Apple TV unit to a different location like the Deck in the Summer & just connect my old boombox with RCA inputs.
TIA for any assistance or suggestions.

    Hey there BCFind,
Thanks for your response and good wishes. I've tried a couple of AE stations with limited success(dropping connection--still have them, any thoughts there? I'd appreciate them) and I would like to have the video option, have over 100 DVD rips stored on my iMac CD's external drive that play through iTunes(converted to H.264), a Netflix sub and we love the Jazz stations on iTunes radio. I use my 1st gen iPod Touch and Apple's Remote app with my iMac for music in my bedroom/office but, we'd like to occasionally also eat & watch a movie together as well have the music, get a 2 for 1-- music for entertaining and movies for the family. So, the original question... you're saying 2 ATVs will play the same music if both are on, in the same way that the Airport Express does?
Your set-up seems sweet. Thanks again.

  • Not sure if Windows Vista will meet the video requirements

I checked for all the requirements to download iTunes.
My computer meets all of them except for _2GHz Pentium class processor or better._
    My computer has only 1.90GHz.
    What does the mean?
Will i not be able to put movies in my iPod nano [Third Generation]?

That's listed as an additional video requirement, so unless you intend on watching iTunes videos on your computer, you're fine.

  • ITunes / Quicktime Video Problems With Windows VISTA

I took up Windows Vista as soon as it was available and initially had no problems with iTunes. Then later, video clips (those purchased from iTunes and those I had converted myself) started stuttering / freezing and eventually crashing iTunes and finally I lost audio as well.
Ayyway to cut a long story short, I have uninstalled / re-installed Vista now about eight times for problems with installing drivers for USB devices (I've finally solved all these problems). After the last install the first program I installed was iTunes, tried video and it worked flawlessly. Then, each time I added a hardware device or program I would restart Vista and retry iTunes video.
The first item I added was a USB thumb drive (as I had on all previous occasions to take advantage of Vista's 'Ready Boost'). The thumb drive is a 'Sony 2GB micro vault tiny', and meets the transfer speed requirements for 'Ready Boost', as soon as I had set the drive up for 'Ready Boost' I started having the same problems with iTunes video and Quicktime.
Removed the thumb drive, restarted iTunes and had flawless video playback again. Have tried this over and over with the same result.
So my question is, has anyone else had video playback problems with iTunes / Vista and found similar problems. Trying to tie down whether this is a compatability problem with 'Ready Boost' or the thumb drive used. I have also tried a Sandisk Titanium 2GB with the same result.
I am not sure exactly how 'Ready Boost' works, I thought it added memory that was used to cache page files to the thumb drive instead of to the HDD making a faster seek /access time? Which should make things faster. Another article I read today was talking about 'Ready Boost' being an affordable extension to RAM, in this case I could understand the problem as I would think the access to a USB 2.0 thumbdrive would be slower than that to RAM.
Any help appreciated, but I guess my bottom line is anytime I want to watch video on iTunes, I just pull the USB thumb drive .
PC Pentium 4   Other OS   Windows Vista Home Premium

I have the same stuttering video issues with iTunes and Vista. While I have used a thumb drive to transfer files (not Sony) I have not yet messed with Ready boost. I have seen several others complain about the video problem, perhaps they will chime in as well. Unfortunately, your solution doesn't work for me. I pretty much ignore iTunes, waiting for the next version (only god knows when it will be released).
I do have an external firewire drive connected, I'll disconnect later today and see if that has any affect.

  • ITunes 8 now requires Quicktime 7.5.5... Even without fixing all its bugs.

iTunes 8 now requires Quicktime 7.5+... What is that? Even without fixing all its bugs working with OS 10.4.11 and lower. Choppy video is still a problem on G5 machines, I have had to reinstall QT 7.4.5 to fix the problem twice now. (Thanks Pacifist) I wont try to install QT 7.5 again until Apple confirms that they have a problem and that it is assured us having a fixed solution, not just it being a little bit better. I know that the answer is get OS 10.5+ installed, but there are still programs and issues that don't work well within that system. If I had an Intel machine I would not worry as much. But why do these bold requirement statements like to rub in that my computer needs more money inserted after the upgrade instead a warning before hand? ,e

I am just talking about videos that I have shot with correct transfer codecs and imported into Apples' very own Final Cut Pro and just want to see correctly what I could see before smoothly in QT 7.4.5 and earlier. I have long given up QT for viewing anything .avi or .mp4 and use the preferred VLC software. However, QT and FCP are in bed together for obvious reasons. Let's face it... QT does not play everything, nor do I think they try to. No on can survive viewing with QT alone.
