Streaming speeds awefull above 480p on twitch.

Hi,
This isn't so much a complaint about the overall speed of my connection as I get 17.9mb down and 0.98mb up but rather the speed when I try and watch casters on twitch.tv in either 720p or above.
It constantly judders and freezes on me after a second or so and then I get a message saying my connection isn't good enough and to lower the quality. I know it's not the caster dropping frames and all the other viewers in the stream have no problems on these settings so is BT throttling my connection to twitch.tv?
I can stream youtube video's ok at 720p and even 1080p with no problem at all so was wondering whats going on and get this issue fixed as I enjoy just relaxing and watching these streams and obviously the higher quality makes for a better experience.
Thanks.

  • Is there an updated way of setting QuickTime streaming speed for iChat?

I've been using iChat screen share to help a friend.  The first time we tried it, it worked well; the second time, however (same computers), the image of the screen I recieved was suddenly very low resolution (too low for me to see what I'm doing).  It sometimes clears up after around 30-40 seconds, but once a window is moved, etc, the problem reoccurs, making the process tedious to the point that I don't think I'd go through this.  I saw in a previous community tip that changing the streaming speed in Quicktime can resolve this issue; they specified that this must be done through the Quicktime icon in System Preferences, and not through the standard Quicktime app..  that was for OS 10.5.6; on my OS (10.6.8, and the new QT), Quicktime is now missing from the System Preferences panal  : /..  I also saw a user comment on another site saying, "Basically, [the new] QTX lacks the option to pick your codec, frame size, data rate, and so on."  So was QuickTime's streaming speed function lost, and do I really need Quicktime to accomplish better image quality for iChat?  If it can't be fixed, is there a better screen sharing utility I can get that won't have these problems?  Thanks for any help : )..

    Hi,
Back before iChat 4 the Video part of iChat chats was based on the reading the app ttok from the Internet speed it could see.
This speed was directly effected by the then System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab setting.
Basically the Automatic Setting was read a 0 (zero) kbps.
The Fastest Setting of Intranet/LAN also got messed up  (it would not return a figure iChat could use)
For that reason we used to Suggest that people use the 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN setting
This limited Video streaming by any app to 1500kbps both as Upload and Download  (this is fact a rough figure based on using base 10 rather than the true binary based math involved)
At iChat 4 Apple made iChat see the Automatic setting as 384kbps
This should be fast enough for 4 way Video chats as the Host end. (the person that invites the others)
By Snow Leopard (iChat 5) the Quicktime Setting has gone in System Preferences.
The way iChat "reads" the Internet Speed is different and it is not restricted by Quicktime.
The only way to Cap iChat now is the App Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit
Apple state the minimum Internet speed that iChat should have for Screen Sharing is 128kbps
Internet Speeds tends to be based on Binary multiple at lower speeds - 56kbps  is max Dial-up Modem speed
128kbps is obviously twice that. The next speed split is like to be 265kbps
Check that you and your Buddy have at least 128kbps as Upload as well as download.
    http://www.speedtest.net/
Ideally it should be faster as at that speed you can lose between 10 and 20% in the test  and the overheads of running the connection to the ISP
Setting the Bandwidth (in iChat) at 500kbps at both ends can eradicate the variances you can get in slower Internet speeds.
In Snow Leopard Quicktime has become Quicktime X and does have issues playing some Quicktime 7 movies.
This also applies to Lion and Mountian Lion
However there are ways to install the Quicktime 7 Player that will cover the codecs that may not be played.
This info does not apply to iChat though.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro has really slow download and streaming speeds

I'm new to Macs, and don't know much about computers in general. But I got a 13" MacBook Pro almost two weeks ago and have been experiencing really slow download and video streaming speeds. Pages load one image at a time, Netflix is almost impossible to use because the videos will stop buffering every five minutes even if I let them buffer for more than ten minutes. I haven't been experiencing any issues with wifi on my phone, and I've troubleshot our router. I'm not sure what it could be--but then again, I don't know a whole lot. Before I go running off to the Apple Store or call support, is there anything I can try in the meantime? Thanks!

    Graphics  Intel Iris
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)

Check with your isp regarding your download & upload speeds as well as streaming.  You need to determine if the issue is on their end.  You can also check on the speedtest.com website.  Compare what your isp tells you to the net speed website.

  • Help me understand my up-stream speed

Despite having excellent down-stream speed, I have been having problems with insufficient up-stream bandwidth for a long time. This causes me problems with a Vodafone Sure Signal to the point that I can't really use it for my mobile calls unless there is no other traffic on my broadband.
I have bounced between Vodafone support who tell me that I don't have enough up=stream bandwidth and I must speak to BT, and BT who tell me that my upstream speed is fine and there is nothing that can be done.
Until this weekend I though that my Broadband connection was typical with 448/7680 sync speeds. The BT speed tester doesn't show me my up-stream info. I'm not sure if it's because I'm a BT Vision customer, but instead it gives:

  • New Homehub and download/streaming speeds still sl...

    Hi,
Just received a new Homehub 3 today and it has not disconnected from the broadband yet however my download and streaming speeds are much slower than they were before I started experiecing faults with the previous homehub. Does this mean it take a few days for my connection to become stable again? I've tried different channels and that has not helped at all.

    Is this okay?

If there is no problem with the stats could there be something wrong with my line or do I need a new microfilter? Tech support at BT suggested that I should get a new master socket installed and it could be causing porblems with my connection. However I have had BT Broadband for almost 2 years now and my download and steaming speeds have usually remained high and consistent throughout that time period.

  • "Automatic" Streaming Speed bug returns in 7.4.1

The bug that was reported back in 7.1.1 and reportedly fixed in 7.1.3 has either returned or was never properly fixed.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2534073&#2534073
I have a reference movie that defines 2 live streams, one for low bandwidth users and one for high bandwidth users. When I open it with Quicktime 7.4.1 on Windows XP it selects the stream correctly. When I open it with 7.4.1 on OS X 7.4.11 on a Mac Mini, it always selects the low speed stream. Both computers are on the same LAN as the server, so the available data rate is way in excess of that required for the streams. If I configure the streaming speed preference manually it works fine. This is not a solution though, as many of our beloved users are intimidated by tweaking preferences, and have a reasonable expectation that it would just work. [On the same subject I dearly wish that Quicktime would default to HTTP instead of UDP, as there are network configurations where it fails to switch transports automatically, and UDP just doesn't work through most firewalls and NAT routers.]
Does anybody know the nature of the exchange that goes on between Quicktime and the server to determine the available bandwidth? Can some misconfiguration block or corrupt the test without preventing streaming?
You'd think Apple would work to make sure that Quicktime at least worked as well on a Mac as Windows!

OK - I don't know why half my post turned into a link. I didn't type the http prefix that makes it look that way!

  • Streaming has slowed to a crawl on my MacBook Pro. This is using both Safari and Firefox. What can I do to return streaming speed to normal?

I have been trying to look through Activity Monitor but nothing looks strange there. This happened all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago and has continually become worse and worse to the point that a video won't even stream beyond 2 or 3 seconds past the point being viewed.

Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?   How much ram do you have?  Is it maxed out?  How are you connected to the internet when streaming?  Ethernet connection is faster than wireless.  Especially when it comes to streaming.
Check with your isp to determine if the issue is on their end.

    Good evening,
I need to acquire and stream to disk the status of N.8 digital lines at 100 MHz clock, idest 100MBytes/sec data rate, in continuously mode (without data loss) for five minutes.
I've thought to a PXIe configuration with:
    PXIe 6544 High speed DIO,
    PXIe 1071 Chassis,
PXIe Controller with solid state H.D. option.
    Is that configuration enough?
    Thanks.

    Hello Roberto,
According to NI PXIe-6544 specifications, you should be able to achieve typical data streaming rates 400 MB/s for acquisition and 400 MB/s for generation. So, you shouldn't face with any issue from this side.

  • How do I increase video streaming speed on mobile?

I have a new Azure acct where I have uploaded many videos/blobs into one container. So far my Azure Media service/storage has 10560 MB of video content. I'm working on a phone app so its not live yet, no one is watching/no traffic. But when I play to test
the video directly in the url generated by the "source video" (Mp4) my videos are stopping to buffer when I watch them on my phone using my data connection. It's not a problem with my mobile device or service provider because when I watch youtube
or facebook etc their videos work fine, they don't ever pause.
The Azure videos streams better only when I watch the videos with the phone's LTE feature on or perfectly when I'm connected directly to my office internet service/wifi. I don't want my future viewers to have any delays when watching my videos on the road
when they're using their cellular data connection. Therefore:
    1) Where do I go in my Azure to fix this issue, what feature ?
2)And when I do get traffic what else do i need to increase if different? I read this under but I don't know if this applies to my case and what each unit will do because I increased the streaming units from 1 unit 200mbps to 3 units 600mbps but that made
    no difference.

    Hi Manu,
I saw your links thanks but you did not answer my questions.
We have no problems in streaming the videos blob type, storage type, storage version, cache etc and we're not looking to use smooth streaming or much less Silverlight etc.
I was talking about VIDEO SPEEDS in IN A MOBILE DATA CONNECTION. See Azure's "video test" page under and see how they also buffer/constantly stop in a mobile data connection. So it's not me it's AZURE!
The issue we're having I believe is between the video's speed play between "Azure servers" and an ISP company, example "Verizon Wireless". So being that a "mobile phone data" connections is slower than a "direct" (non-open
public) "wifi" connection,  Azure should compensate their connection speeds for these connections. Some time ago it was known that ISP Verizon etc were slowing down video speeds from Netflix etc. mashable
article. I don't think we're at that level, but I think Azure speeds are not compatible to play on mobile "data" connections.
so question is ...What are the Azure delivered speeds ? and who can so something about it?
**Test these 2 links on your cell's "data connection" and then compare with your home/office connection and see the difference.
Also then just play a youtube or facebook, vimeo and see how they perform well on your data connection but Azure test page video does not.

  • Audio and Video streaming speed to high

I'm struggling for a couple of weeks to stream fm radio to my BB. It switches over to wap, and right after that the buffer starts filling. I hear a coupke of seconds of normal sound, and then the speed doubles. Anyone knows what i'm doing wrong?

It is video transmission only.  That is the only example I can find that comes close to what you are trying to do.  Together along with this demo:

You may be able to piece together what you are trying to do.  Other than that, I don't see any current audio/video streaming examples.  If you pursue this application, don't forget to give back to the community!

  • Airport Streaming Speeds...

I have my aiport extreme connected to my Wanadoo Livebox, everything is fine except when i stream video or audio i get really slow speeds. If i try streaming the same files from my PC connected directly to the Livebox i dont have the problem.
Also just lately my download speeds have started to slow down quite a bit.
Anyone know why this is? Is it becuase im using Wanadoo's Livebox instead of an Apple base station?

This could be because of the connection type between the two...the ports that you are using to connect it in your computer maybe of a different speed as the one you are connected to in your airport

  • Any ideas on how to step up my internets download and streaming speed?

I just purchased a NEW computer 10 days ago and every since it's installation, my internet (specifically downloads and streaming) is slower than it was on my previous computer. Downloads on my xbox take a lot longer as well as it's setup in my wireless network. I live in Buffalo NY and have Verizon DSL with a westell 6100 modem and a Netgear router. I have done 3 speed tests in the past two days with these results:
    #1 - 1.01 Mb/s download 0.65 Mb/s upload 50 ms latency
    #2 - 1.01 Mb/s download 0.67 upload Mb/s 48 ms latency
    #3 -  0.52 Mb/s download 0.62 Mb/s upload 58 ms latency
    #3 being the most recent.
Any ideas on how to step up my connection speed? The stop and go of video buffering is driving me insane!

Does the speed improve when you remove the new PC from the mix? What operating system does the old computer and new computer have?
