Streaming to ATV without Itunes

I know this sound crazy but, I don't always want to run Itunes. I run networks using PCs/windows and was looking to buy a simple media bridge (like Linksys makes)to stream whatever the heck I want to my stereo. Ended up buying the ATV because nothing else in stock or even marketed at the local Bust Buy and now I remember why I don't like Apple. within itunes environment it works great. I was thinking it was just a neatly packaged wireless network drive with audio and video outs (USB and eithernet too!). But now I see it is a itunes only thing. So I want to stream Pandora or output from some other software (say a software synth) to my ATV. Is this possible? It does not show up as a network device or drive.
Also, it get hot as heck.
Also, it stopped showing up as a device when I uploaded itunes 8.

It's not a case of not liking Apple, it's just that it doesn't do what you want the way you want it to, and there are plenty of other things that do that.

You were either misled by salespeople or didn't really understand what you bought - I know that doesn't make you feel better but I've been bitten in the past by making assumptions and I'm highly cautious these days to ensure things do what I want them to.

I've never used one but will a Slingbox device do what you want?

Normal - the case is designed to dissipate the heat. I wish it wasn't so hot, but it is normal.

Frustrating. Sorry can't offer any hints or tips for Windows as I've been out of the loop there for a while. It may be an Apple problem, it may be something else, but it really shouldn't happen.
As an aside, I bought a refurbished AppleTv for my father, upgraded his iTunes 6.x to iTunes 8.0 and AppleTv worked like a dream, but this was a fresh 'pairing' of AppleTV with his iTunes 8.0. That was on an oldish Windows XP system I built for him a few years back, and to be honest I was expecting problems. There were a couple of odd restarts but they seemed to settle after I updated his Windows Security (machine was still running Service Pack 2).

  • Stream Photos to ATV without slideshow??

    Hi -
Sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find it.
Can I stream photos from iTunes to ATV without using the slideshow?
I'd like to either browse my photo library (like in ituens or my touch) or at least 'next' and 'previous' at will with my remote (ATV remote or touch Remote app - either is fine).
    Can this be done?
    THANKS!

OK - there is some strangeness now.
It seems that if you chose to "sync", then you can still stream from iTunes everything except Photos.
    That's how it should work
When setup for "sync" you cannot access photos, and everything else is based on playlists, and what is checked within iTunes. Photos must be synced to the ATV.
You can access photos, sure you're looking in my photos not shared photos.
It's not all just playlist based, you can choose specific movies, tv shows etc and choose music by artist etc.
When setup for "stream" you can access anything in iTunes, whether it is checked or not. For example, I have about 700 podcasts, and I can get them all when streaming, but only the checked ones when set on sync.
Again that's how it's supposed to work, syncing gives you far more control than streaming.

    Ditto.
You need to look for your itunes library under Computers and select it, then music.
Music column is for web based content not local content, just to confuse everyone.

  • Using Apple TV without iTunes/MacBookPro off

See various posts along these lines, but nothing that seems to answer my question. I want to use my ATV without the need for having my notebook open. I see posts regarding hard sync but search for that topic and see nothing. All I want to do is to have my content available without the need for my Notebook open. Hints?

The AppleTV 'device' seen in iTunes, is either set up to stream to AppleTV (shared library) or to sync and stream.
You can only have 1 sync and stream library, that lists media under My Music, My Movies etc. With iTunes off the list of media shown only shows what is synced to AppleTV's hard drive, which may be nothing, some or all of your media depending on how you configured it under the iTunes Devices tab. There are automatic 'iTunes best guess of what you want to sync' and Custom settings. If everything isn't synced then when iTunes is open the list shown also includes stuff available to stream live, but synced and stream entries are merged in the list transparently to the user so it looks like a single list.
If you set iTunes up to stream only the content will be selectable under My Shared Music etc option only and you can't sync.
Only the sync library can accept reverse syncs of stuff purchased on AppleTV.
Changing the sync library erases media on AppleTV to give a 'clean slate'.
If you got to Settings>Computers on AppleTV then the top entry in the list is usually the sync library.
In iTunes Devices>AppleTV if you only have 2 tabs> Summary and Photos, you are set for streaming only. A sync libarry has several tabs for each media type to configure what syncs.

  • Can I add movie to Apple TV without itunes or store

I would like a movie to reside on my apple tv but i dont want it on my computer. It is not available to download from Itunes. Is there a way to put it on the atv without having to sync. I have tried to add it to my itunes library, sync it through the movies tab, delete the movie after it has synched, then stopped it before it could sync again telling it to delete it. Eventually it syncs without my help and deletes the movie. Any ideas?

AppleTV is nit designed to work like that.

    No.

Syncing implies that the AppleTV is in sync with iTunes, if you remove it from iTunes it assumes you don't want it on AppleTV either.
    Two workarounds:
1 - Assuming you have a copy of the video backed up somewhere, once you've added it to iTunes and synced to AppleTV, right click on it's entry in iTunes to locate the actual file in iTunes library. Next, manually delete the file from it's location but don't delete the entry in iTunes. iTunes will not delete the file at the next sync - it just can't find it. Ensure your sync settings are such that this movie won't automatically delete when AppleTV fills up or after it's watched if you have a near full AppleTV.
2 - Store the file on an external USB drive. Change iTunes Preferences so it doesn't copy the file on import to it's library. Add the file to iTunes - it will just store a reference to the file, sync to AppleTV. Eject external drive.
Net sync the movie stays on AppleTV because there's still an iTunes entry for it - the file just isn't available at this point.

  • Is it possible to synch and stream from the same iTunes library?

We have two Powerbooks in the house, each one contains our own individual iTunes library. Powerbook 1 is synched to ATV. Powerbook 2 just streams to ATV. Because each Powerbook can obviously be moved to different parts of the house, we want to be able to stream each iTunes library to ATV (in the living room) AND play the same library out of the Powerbook in a different room.
When using our iPhone Remote to select the iTunes library on Powerbook 2 (the 'streamer'), an "Airplay" section appears at the bottom of the "Settings" screen which allows the output device to be selected as the Powerbook and/or ATV - meaning that the same music can be played through both devices in different parts of the house - great!
However, the same "Airplay" section does not appear at the bottom of the "Settings" screen when the iTunes library on Powerbook 1 (the 'syncher') is selected - and the music just plays through the Powerbook 1, not ATV - not great!
Is this somehow because it's not possible to stream the Powerbook 1 library to ATV because it has been synched? It feels as though there must be a simple way around it?

you can sync multiple macs to one ATV, one at a time. use the Finder and set up your first itunes library. make a folder and give it a name. then drag that itunes library file into that folder. launch itunes and make another library synced to the same ATV. Make a folder give it a name. The only issue is remembering to drag out the proper library, don't change the library name because it is not a one to one relationship.
I never tried multiple libraries at the same time to one ATV but I am doing one Mac to two ATVs, each with their own library and synced.
Helps me keep track of my library and then my wife's.

  • Sync from ATV to Itunes

Ok my ATV shoe in the device list and it is streaming. How do I get movies I have downloaded on ATV to Itunes? Is it suppose to be automatic? Because stuff that is on my ATV is not showing up in Itunes. I can sync from Itunes to ATV but I a can seem to do it the other way. i have tried to research this but can't find much. Just a simple few steps on what I should try would be greatly apprciated.
    Thanks.

This is an all volunteer effort. Maybe no one who knows the answer has yet looked at your questions. You only posted it two hours ago. You may need to be a bit more patient.
And yes, your question is worded a bit oddly. What does "Okay my ATV shoe" mean? However, if I understand your question, (and I'm not sure I do) Control (or right) click on the items you want to transfer back to your computer and select Transfer Purchase.
    Best of luck.

  • Can I stream to ATV from my AirPort?

I am using AirPort (2TB) to store video, music and photos. Can I stream video or music directly from the AirPort or do I need to put the files into iTunes and stream from there? I am currently using eyeTVHD to convert old VHS tapes into DVD. I am saving them so they can be played on ATV. Just don't want to fill my MacBook's HD with all the files. THanks.

AppleTV is fed all it's media by iTunes whether this is synced or streamed to it.
AppleTV cannot access network shares/external drives etc by itself.
You can do what you want to in theory by changing iTunes Preferences>Advanced so that media is not copied to the iTunes library which presumably resides on your Macbook - add the stuff from the Airport to iTunes and it will just keep a reference of file location to use when streaming or syncing.
Synced material, once transferred does not need iTunes to play, but to stream additional content requires itunes running.
Note - you say you're converting old video to DVD - AppleTV cannot play DVD media folders, and doesn't handle menus (except for some new iTunes Store movies) - you might need to convert your home made DVDs to h264 format. Better still would be to export the project to a physical DVD but also to create an AppleTV compatible format fro use with that - EyeOne software used to have an option to edit and convert for AppleTV but I don't have the recent update.

  • My ipad streaming purchased video from itunes stops every few seconds.  does not happen with any other streaming video service.

my ipad streaming purchased video from itunes stops every few seconds.  This does not happen with any other streaming video service.  I have restarted and rebooted already.

I've tried both things, but video still stutters.. Have also tried removing profile, and complete reinstall of firefox.
I'm on 24 Mbit cable and the only user atm. IE and Chrome seems to work without stuttering.
I've having this stuttering every ~5th second, like a small "1/4 sec buffering".

  • Looking for a compatible HD to stream to ATV.

I am buying a new Mac Mini and external HD. The external HD will be used to store my iTunes movies folder. I understand that some hard-drives are not compatible with syncing/streaming to ATV. Can anyone recommend a compatible HD (size 1.5-2T)?
    Thanks.

not sure what you have read or have been told, but there is no such thing as an "appletv compatible HDD".
providing your mac mini can use the external HDD as normal, then there would be no problems using it with the appletv.
personally i would recommend using firewire 800 as the connection.

  • What's the best way for home sharing to iDevices without iTunes?

What's the best way for home sharing movies and tv shows on my iDevices?  I know I can use home sharing through iTunes, but I'm looking for a way to share videos to my iDevices without having to leave my computer on.  I have a MacPro, iPhone, iPad, Airport Extreme, and Airport Express (and several external hard drives).  Can anyone suggest an app that would do this?  Can I have videos on an external hd attached to an Airport Extreme/Express and have it stream without iTunes?

If your "server" is new enough to run Mountain Lion, you can purchase the OS X Server app from the Mac App store and you'll have everything you need to host a NetInstall (NetBoot) server.
If your machine does not support Mountain Lion, you'll need to purchase the appropriate Mac OS X Server software (i.e. Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server)
From there you can host NetInstall or NetRestore images, depending on your preferred workflow, which can be created using System Image Utility.
As Richard points out you can also use Deploy Studio which, again depending on your preferred workflow, might simplify things.

  • Can't make new hard drive stream to ATV

After my computer crashed, the hard drive was replaced but I lost all content. However, my ATV has much of my music, photos and movies so I don't want to lose this content. I would love to be able to retrieve these from ATV but I would settle for being able to keep the content and get the ATV to work with my refurbished computer. I can see my ATV in itunes devices but it only shows summary and photo tabs and the apply tab is grey so I cannot apply it. Does anyone know how I can keep the existing info on ATV and get it to recognize the new itunes library? Thanks

You can't do what you want.
    1. You cannot recover the content from the Apple TV, unless you take it to somewhere where they can remove the drive from the device and extract all the content for you.
    2. If you do sync with the new PC then it will erase the content from the Apple TV

  • How can I view my full billing history for the app and music stores without iTunes installed?

I just received an email receipt from Paypal showing a $12.99 purchase from iTunes. I almost NEVER purchase anything over around five dollars in the app or music store. Since PayPal does not show what this purchase was for, I have not received the receipt from Apple yet, and I cannot find anyway to look up online what this purchase was for....I need help to find out ASAP what this purchase was. If my account has been compromised or if I have been incorrectly charged for something, I would like to get the issue handled immediately. I do not want to install iTunes on my PC (nor should I have to for Pete's sake), but I cannot see anything recent at all in my app or music history on my iPad (not that I would ever purchase anything for $12.99 anyway...I just don't). Thanks in advance for any tips!

How can I view my full billing history for the app and music stores without iTunes installed?
    No.
If my account has been compromised
If you even think this may have happened, immediately change your password.

  • How to re-load OS 3.0 without iTunes?  My iPhone has a NON-Apple alien OS.

My iPhone has a NON-Apple alien Chinese OS running. This OS caused iTunes to NOT see the phone on USB when I connect the phone to the computer. I want to re-load the non-Apple OS to Apple version 3.0 but I cannot because iTunes does not see the phone. I know the os is Chinese and alien because none of the icons are correct, example I see no ipod, its labeled audioplayer. I see no Safari, its labeled services and so on. I also can NOT see the about, its not found. I have a video recorder it works, I thought iPhone 3G can not run videos. I have lots of Chinese games and symbols. I do have the at&t SIM, it works OK, and I just want to load the phone with the latest Apple 3G version 3.0 OS and have iTunes see the phone like every other American iPhone but I can not figure out how to do that without iTunes seeing the iPhone.

I took the phone to the Apple store in my mall. The Apple experts at my mall have never seen anything like this phone. It's totally functioning like an iPhone but its not one. The dimensions of the case are exact same size as the iPhone 3g we put them side by side. Then we also noticed that the screen is about 1/4 inch shorter than the touch screen of the real Apple iPhone this is the ONLY physical give away other than then OS its running. The person I spoke to worked at the store for 2 years and he never saw such a close copy that works so well. Its almost like they took a real Apple case and replaced the circuits with a copy. The funny thing is the fake phone works really good. I just can NOT get iTunes to load. I can copy and paste music videos, pictures, files to the phone and it all works OK on the phone. The voice calls are good. The video is great that it shoots, the camera is great! I will see if I can load apps, I have not tried yet. I wish I could figure out who made this unique clone alien phone. The quality is up there with Apple. I am starting to like this phone because its so different!!!! I will investigate the chinese links posted on this issue.
