Streaming to smart tv

Hello All,
Hoping someone can help us out. We recently purchased a Samsung SmartTV (which we love) and got rid of our huge cable bill.
I also have purchased the adaptor for my 2009 MacBook and the appropriate HDMI cable for the adaptor and the tv.
I have been attempting to figure out how to stream from my Macbook to the tv, some shows or movies on Netflix, ShowTime Anywhere, etc., and even
though I have followed instructions from the internet, and reputable sites, to no avail. I have managed to get the HDMI screen to show as an app, and past that the display screen, but no streaming.
Quite flummoxed and any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Jane

Jane,
If you attach your MacBook via a Mini-Display-Port-to-HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable  to an HDMI input of a Samsung SmartTV, the TV effectively acts as an external display to your MacBook (make sure you switch the input of the TV to the HDMI port you plugged aforementioned HDMI cable into) and as such there ought not be any limitations to what content you can display on it - anything that can play back, stream, or display on your MacBook's built-in display can also do so on this TV.
To configure what your MacBook displays on the attached TV, load your Displays panel in your System Preferences (in your Apple menu at the upper left hand corner of your screen). If it doesn't look like your TV is receiving a signal from your MacBook even though you've verified that your TV's input has been switched to the HDMI input you plugged the connected cable into, check your physical connections and/or click the "Detect Displays" button in the Displays panel.
Once it looks like your TV is receiving video from your MacBook, take a look at the "Arrangement" tab that should be visible in the Displays panel whenever there is an active connection to an external display. In the Arrangement tab you can switch  mirroring (showing the same content on the MacBook's built-in display and the external display) on and off with a checkbox at the bottom of the panel.
Mirroring is the least complicated way to configure your display connection to your TV, but it's got the potential disadvantage of not utilizing the full display resolution of your TV, since when you mirror your MacBook's built-in display, what's showing on the TV screen will essentially be a scaled up version of what you see on your MacBook.
Then again, if you're watching online streaming content that likely wouldn't take advantage of your TV's full 1920x1080 HD resolution anyway, this might not matter and you might be happier with a mirrored MacBook display than figuring out how to arrange two desktops and move browser windows from your MacBook across to the un-mirrored TV display. Though, honestly, that isn't so hard to figure out - once you've turned off mirroring just play with the little representations of your built-in display (the smaller rectangle with the white bar across the top representing your menu) and your TV (the larger rectangle without a white bar across the top) in the Arrangement tab that will control their relative spatial arrangement to one another.
Say—in an unmirrored display arrangement—you dragged the larger rectangle representing the TV to sit center atop the smaller rectangle representing your MacBook's screen - with this display arrangement you would move your mouse pointer from the latter to the former by moving it up beyond the menu bar at the top and it'll immediately appear at the bottom edge of the TV (and vice versa - the TV display virtually attaches the to top of the built-in display). In this arrangement you could grab a web browser window and drag it up past the menu bar to appear on the TV screen. Once you dragged a window to the TV screen you ought to be able to switch whatever it is you're playing back to full screen mode and see a seamless image on your TV.
Once you got the display of content going to the TV configured to your liking, consider clicking on "Show All" on top of the System Preferences window to back out of the Displays panel and open the Sound panel to switch your MacBook's sound output from its built-in speakers to your TV's speakers, which ought to be appear in the list of sound output options with an active HDMI connection to a device capable of sound output (given that HDMI is capable of transferring audio as well).
All that said - if you bought a brand-new Smart TV, why not do all the streaming you wish to do directly on the TV? A Smart TV is essentially a TV with an integrated set top box, meaning you can use applications installed on the TV directly to stream Netflix and a large host of other streaming providers without the need to tie up your laptop for the purpose. Here is a link to Samsung's overview of their 2013 Smart TV feature set.

  • Streaming Data between Smart Camera and FPGA?

    Is there a way I can stream data between a smart camera (NI 1774) and a FlexRIO FPGA module (PXIe-7961R)? I understand that data from the smart camera can only come from a USB or an Ethernet connection, I intend to plug the camera to the PXI controller (PXIe-8135), the chassis I'm using is PXIe-1082 so the p2p data transfer at 8GB/s should be possible between the controller and the FPGA module.
    As a note: The processing I'm trying to do is too computationally intensive so its not possible to do it on the smart camera itself.

    Hi faisalm88,
    This is Emi from NI.
    Unfortunately there is no direct streaming between smart camera and FlexRIO FPGA.
    (It has to be smart camera -> controller --> FlexRIO FPGA board)
    And thus I have a few suggestion for you.
    If you can tell me what's your application (does it have to be smart camera? Is the "data" you are talking about image?) ,
    I might can come up with even better solution.
    1. Do not use smart camera.
    The iamge quality of 1774 can be easily replaced with USB web cam.
    You can connect the web cam to your PXI controller and transfer data to your FPGA board.
    If you are using LabVIEW 2014 and newer, there is function to transfer image data to FPGA.
    2. Do not use 8135
    Assuming if you are using FlexRIO just to enhance image processing performance,
    then if might be better to use CVS
    http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/ja/nid/212667
    It has both FPGA and quadcore processor.
    3. Stream image data: 1774 --> 8135 --> 7961R
    Let me know what method you want to take
    and I can describe them more in detail.

  • Automatic Import Of Photo Streams I Subscribe To (not mine)

    Sorry, if this question has already been answered, I could not find the info in my feeble search attempts.
    My understanding of the Automatic Import setting for Aperture is that it automatically imports my Photo Stream and only my Photo Stream. Aperture automatically creates a new Project for each month of Photo Stream import.
    It does not automatically import any photos from any of the other Photo Streams I'm subscribing to.
    Correct?
    Is there a way to automatically import the photos from these other, subscribed to Photo Streams?
    Could a Smart Album do this? I couldn't seem to figure out how to create one. I couldn't get the source to point to the specific Photo Stream.

    It does not automatically import any photos from any of the other Photo Streams I'm subscribing to.
    Correct?
    Yes, you have to import from the Shared Photo Szreams manually by dragging the items to a project in your library.
    Is there a way to automatically import the photos from these other, subscribed to Photo Streams?
    I don't know of any option in Aperture that could do this.
    Could a Smart Album do this? I couldn't seem to figure out how to create one. I couldn't get the source to point to the specific Photo Stream.
    Smart albums can only refer to library items that already have been imported. So that will not work.
    You will see an alert in the Aperture item, if someone adds a photo to a shared stream. So simply import when you see the alert.
    Sorry, I have not really a solution, unless you would be willing to write an Apple Script, that checks for new photos and imports.

  • Will time capsule support streaming for Netflix 3D

    Will TimeCapsule provide data rates streaming to smart TV for NetFlix 3D? NetFlix & Amazon require 25 mps.

    Yes, they are well capable of WAN to LAN throughput of 300-500Mbps.
    Wireless of course will never be that fast.. a gen3 TC is limited to 150Mbps on 2.4ghz and 300 or if you are very lucky 450mbps on 5ghz but range is short.. that is link speed only and actual throughput can be very slow.. depending on distance and load from other wifi clients.. to stream smoothly you need ethernet IMHO.. once you start into the 3d kind of speeds.. or you need dedicated wireless link at 5ghz.

  • Dilemma converting arbitrary encoding to UTF-8

    Here's my dilemma: I recently modified our webapp to use UTF-8 encoding across the board, since data with special characters that users added to the content management backend was being displayed incorrectly in ISO-8859-1. It works great for Strings we get from the database, since it uses UTF-8. The problem now is that there are also files that consist of html chunks that get added to pages when they're rendered by the jsps. Those files aren't always UTF-8 encoded, so characters are displaying incorrectly in those parts of the page.
    The problem is that we don't know what encoding the html chunks are, some are ISO-8859-1, some are Windows-1252, etc. There are hundreds of them, and the users use all kinds of programs to generate the files, Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc. so there's no common encoding used. I'm trying to modify the code that reads those files so it converts the text to UTF-8 for display, but without knowing what encoding the file is in, how can you do the conversion properly? Here's the code I have currently:
            ByteArrayInputStream contentInput = file.getContent();
            // wrap byte stream in UTF-8 character stream
            BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(contentInput, "UTF-8"));
            StringBuffer outputBuffer = new StringBuffer("");
            do {
                readString = br.readLine();
                outputBuffer.append(readString);
            while (readString != null);We get a ByteArrayInputStream from the third party API, which I wrap in a UTF-8 encoded BufferedReader. The problem is that, for instance, this character '', when encoded in the file as ISO-8859-1, get's garbled when converted to UTF-8.
    My question is: Is there a way to convert text to UTF-8 without knowing the encoding of the file? I suspect the answer is no, but I'm really hoping it's yes, since the alternative is re-encoding hundreds to thousands of files in the db, then retraining hundreds of users to always save files as UTF-8. (You can't see my brain spasming at the thought of that, but trust me, it is ;P).

    As an update, in case anyone else runs into this same problem:
    I used the SmartEncodingInputStream from uncle_alice's link, and it works just well enough to solve my problem. The only encoding that it guessed correctly was UTF-8. But it guessed windows-1252 for US-ASCII, windows-1252, and ISO-8859-1. Since 1252 is a superset of ascii and 8859, using 1252 decodes all the characters correctly from those encodings. All the content I tested with was decoded correctly, presumably because it all uses one of those four encodings. The one snag I hit was that the SmartEncodingInputStream doesn't reset the InputStream after it reads it, so I have to do it manually after getting the guessed encoding. Here's the code I used:
            // Get the file content
            ByteArrayInputStream contentInput = file.getContent();
            StringBuffer outputBuffer = new StringBuffer("");
            // wrapper around the input stream that guesses the encoding of the stream
            SmartEncodingInputStream smartIS = null;
            // use a 8k buffer, and a default encoding of windows-1252
            smartIS = new SmartEncodingInputStream(contentInput, SmartEncodingInputStream.BUFFER_LENGTH_8KB,
                    Charset.forName("windows-1252"));
            String charsetName = smartIS.getEncoding().name();      // get the name of the encoding guessed
            contentInput.reset();       // reset the position to the beginning of the stream
            byte[] contentBuffer = new byte[8192];
            int bytesRead = 0;
            while( (bytesRead = contentInput.read(contentBuffer, 0, 8192)) > 0 ) {
                // encode the output with the encoding guessed by the SmartEncodingInputStream
                outputBuffer.append(new String(contentBuffer, 0, bytesRead, charsetName));
            contentInput.close();I left out the try/catch blocks for readability. I get the ByteArrayInputStream from a library call, and end up with the file contents encoded in UTF-8 in outputBuffer.

  • NWDI CTS+ integration

    Hello,
    we have a NWDI (NW1) 7.0 SP15, three (DH2,QH2,PH2) abap systems nw7.0 with SP14 and three (DP2, QP2, PP2) java systems 7.0 with sp14. With the docu "best practices for implementing cts" we have set up CTS with close coupling between NWDI and CTS. If we create an development and transport the development through the track to prod, we can't see at which point the java development should go to the cts.
    All systems dh2, dp2, qp2, qh2, pp2, ph2 have been created on the domain controller dh2.

  • I want to stream itunes movies I've bought on my ipad air to my lg smart tv.  From the 'Home' screen of the lg, there is no itunes app shown that would somehow let me share info with my ipad air.  Has anyone the answer.  Am I missing something here?

    I have an lg smart TV.  I also just bought an apple ipad air,Wi-Fi Cellular 16GM I've signed up the air to itunes and just purchased a movie on the ipad air.  I was able to stream the movie on my air and my pc, which is of course wirelessly connected to my smart TV.  I've searched the 'Home' screen of the lg to find a way to also stream that movie on the lg.  Am I somehow just not reading right and missing the point, or is what I'm trying to do not possible?

    I have raised this issue with apple support this week too after my Facetime and iMessage stopped working on Saturday.
    Been very interesting to read the ever increasing number of comments and issues being raised on this one (more than 500 views and dozens of replies so far).
    My post is here:
    imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2
    What is especially interesting about your post is that you had your iPad Air replaced in November 2014 in the UK. I bought my iPad Air originally in October 2014, and had to have it replaced in an Apple Store in Bristol in November after the original stopped charging. This does make me wonder if there is a batch of faulty iPads? Mmm...
    I have raised a fully escalated support case with Apple on this, and their latest response is that a 'patch' or fix is being investigated by their engineers and to wait a week or so at which point they might be releasing it to affected users - or even across every users.
    I wish there was a way to get this to Apple's attention and the wider media as well, but I don't know how best to do that.
    I guess the best thing we can do is keep hassling Apple for a response and raising support cases

  • Hyperion Smart Cut Session Issue streaming multiple reports at a time using

    This is a lengthly post with details, Please review with Patience:
    We are trying to integrate Workspace based web Analysis reports within our intranet portal, thru portlets (made from individual workspace smartcut link), so that users can customize their page as needed, Once they login thru intranet, Cookie is set and passed to succeeding smart cut links via secured http headers. This part is fine, but mainly running into issue with streaming several multiple web-analysis reports at a time,+ we are using Iframe to display and stream multiple individual reports on to one page, but unfortunately all Iframes are sharing one session rather than creating individual session, mostly because of limitation of current web analysis system architecture and IE browser behavior with sessions .
    Which Hyperion reporting tool does allow to stream multiple reports  at a time? ideally we want to create Iframe of each workspace report so that users can customize and pick portlets as needed. To stream multiple reports at a time.
    Problem Description: Hypeiron Web Analsysis, Smart cut reports incorrectly rendering images and intermixing dash boards on POV changes upon multiple reports being diplayed at one time thru Iframe's, issue seem to mostly relate to Hyperion using single session rather to multiple session when displaying several web reports at a time.
    Steps Needed To Reproduce:
    User logs into workspace.
    user click on expolore and able to view the report without any issues.
    When right on any of the report and select properties.
    Select the SmartCut url and paste it in the Internet explorer.
    The webanalysis report opens without any issues.
    Similarly user copies the smartcut url for a different report and paste the link on a different tab or new window of same browser.
    The report on the first tab gets over written of the report of the second tab of the browser.
    The issue happens when two different reports and opened on a browser with multiple tabs. The reports get over written.
    Oracle development answer:
    In the described scenario opening new browser window does not spawn a separate independent browser session. A new browser window is supplied with URL pointing to the same domain, so all browser cookies including the "ORA_WA_SID" (WA session cookie) are shared between the windows. But multiple application instances cannot run in the same browser session simultaneously because of session sharing. This is not actually a defect, but rather a limitation of current system architecture and browser behavior. And there is no way to fix it programmatically on the product side.

    Hi MeHyper,
    Your current arrangement puts most of the session handling and persistence on the client. This forces you to accept whatever the client decides to persist and propogate between browser elements (in this case iframes).
    My approach would be to:
    Consider coding your portlets to manage the sessions. Manage using a somewhat stateless strategy so that each request to the server requires a login and connect, retrieve, and disconnect. Each Iframe should access a different portlet url (or provide a different query) based on its content.
    This way, in theory, you can invalidate the sessions and related cookies and update the various report elements independently.
    Is smartview out of the question here?

  • I bought a 3tb Time Capsule and would like to stream movie from it to my Samsung Smart TV.  Do I need Apple TV or Another App?

    I bought a 3tb Time Capsule and would like to stream movies from it to my Samsung Smart TV.  Do I need Apple TV or Another App?

    TC is not a media device.. it has no media smarts at all.
    And Apple TV is not a media player .. it is strictly a streamer.
    Apple have built their entire media system around itunes.. so without itunes running on a computer nothing will happen.
    The TC is unsuitable as location for your iTunes library as well.. you are simply slowing down the access to the library and making streaming more prone to glitches.
    TC is for TM backups.
    Use your Mac with iTunes library on an external hard disk if it is too big to fit in the internal disk.
    The samsung TV cannot use the TC either because it needs a DLNA server extension on the storage.
    There is however one way.. and not recommending it.. just saying it can be done.
    Depending on how your media files are formatted.. you can use a WD live TV.
    Because WD TV is a full media player and can play raw media files (almost any format) directly from a media source without DLNA, you can play your movie files.. but IMHO it is much easier to simply get a WD MyCloud or any cheap NAS.. that has built in DLNA media server.. almost all do.. and then your TV can play the media directly without any other player.

  • Can I stream movies to my Samsung Smart TV?

    Hi!
    I recently purchased a Samsung Smart 3D TV, which connects to the internet and stuff.
    Will there be a way for it to connect to the time capsule and stream files from it? Will I need to change the Capsule to a file server?

    You cannot stream from a TC.. unless the Samsung TV can read raw file formats for movies.. most smart TV require DLNA server in the File Server.. ie they cannot directly stream from raw file.. TC has no .. repeat.. NO media ability whatsoever.. it is a dumb hard disk in router.
    A WD liveTV can stream movie files from a TC to a TV. All the brains of course are in the WD live.
    An Apple TV cannot.. it is a streamer linked to itunes.
    Buy a WD live.. cheap and easy to use.
    Or buy a proper NAS with DLNA.
