Streaming To The Apple TV?

O.K. So we purchased movies and music and we would like to be able to search thru them and select one via the new apple tv. Is it possible to set up some type of server to stream to the new Apple TV since it has no storage at all, or would it be easier to leave the mini Mac on 24 - 7 with my external 2 TB WD drive to make this possible.

I have also noticed the same "problem". I do not fully understand the impact of using the same ID on multiple computers and devices if I want to keep them all in sync.

You can try one thing. Follow these steps:
1. On your Mac, turn on AirPlay Mirroring and connect it to the Apple TV, so audio and video will stream from the Apple TV.
2. Turn off the sound of the TV where you have connected the Apple TV.
3. Then, make sure that you have turned on the AirPlay speakers. Then, open System Preferences > Sound > Output, and choose the external speakers, so sound will stream from these external speakers.

Can I stream from my apple tv to another apple device?

My TV speakers are bad...really bad. I use a Bose Sound Dock to listen to music with my ipod and iphone but I would love to use it as sound from my tv. Due the the Sound Dock only having aux in v. sereo in, I think my only option is to stream to the device. Is it possible to stream from the apple tv to the ipod/iphone through a wireless connection?

Controlling the Apple TV

Can you control the apple tv from your iphone/ipad visually like you do itunes on the mac? Or, must you have line of sight to control the apple tv? I ask because i would like to use the apple tv to stream music from itunes match, from any room in the house, without 1) downloading the music to the ipad, then streaming that audio to the apple tv 2) Having to have a computer running an instance of itunes on as well - streaming to the apple tv.

You don't actually need line of sight to make it control the Apple TV since it works over wifi, but you really need to see the Apple TV to know what you are doing unless you are using your iTunes library on your PC, which of course involves having the PC on.

Huge streaming delays on Apple TV 2

For the last five days, once-instant streams on the Apple TV, are now showing up as 30 minutes for a 20 minute show and 50 minutes for a 1 hour show.
The curious thing is that if I download a TV show through iTunes I'm getting my usual network performance; a ping of 15ms, d/l of 45+ Mbs and u/l of 4.8+ Mbs. Anyone else having streaming problems specific to an ATV, and only since last Friday? No settings have changed on any device.

I agree too with icloud issue. I have no direct knowledge but I have had funny things happening to my accounts and apple products. My 5 year old came to me yesterday or tuesday and ask me what was on iPad. There on my ipad was code and it referenced iCloud!
Hope that iCloud is going to be seemless (high hopes) I have a feeling that this has effected Lion as well. I look forward to the service and sorry Steve never saw it's roll out!

My iTunes is now playing every video to the apple TV

There doesn't seem to be any option to play content only on my mac & not have it stream to the apple TV. I'd like to be able to watch something on the mac & something else on the apple TV!

Believe me, very easy to misinterpret questions or make incorrect assumptions. Sometimes that's the way we as individuals interpret things, sometimes the way questions are posed with details missing, phase of the moon, too many beers etc etc.

From what I can tell, when I select the movie and hit the airplay button to move it to the apple TV, my iPad is still doing all the work of streaming the movie. Why can't the apple TV take over the heavy work at this point? I'd like to be able to use my iPad as more of a remote with an awesome interface for the apple TV. The netflix app on iPad is great, and the easiest way to browse movies, and pushing them to the apple TV is fantastic, but once the movie starts, I want to use my iPad for other things!!! Can this be put on the "to do" list for devs?

Have you tried the Remote app on iPhone/iPad to control AppleTV, do searches etc? Should be easier than the remote alone and this does not involve Airplay.
Please note, only users read/comment here - your idea is quite sensible in my view (maybe have a 'Continue viewing on AppleTV' option or something. I doubt this would be high on Apple's roadmap but send them feedback here:

Can I stream from the same iTunes account to 2 Apple Tv's in 2 different locations?

I currently have 1 Apple TV device at home. I'm thinking of buying a second one to keep in my office at work across town. My concern is this: my kids love streaming purchased movies and TV shows at home during the day while out of school. Will I be able to stream content purchased on the same iTunes account at the same time while I'm at work and my kids are at home watching on my first ATV device?
I know ATV isn't that expensive, but I would like to avoid duplicating purchases on a new iTunes account just so both locations can be streaming at the same time. Anybody know if this is possible?

(I think the daughter got he better end of the deal!) I believe if you change the password and user id one of the devices it will stop that from occurring. But I'm not the one to tell you how to do it; someone like "Illaass" (Illaass seems to know how to correct / fix almost anything!) will know how if you don't. Just look for the "cat" icon.

You can't simply change the details.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)

Apple tv 3 and the New iPad - I WANT to stream only the sound

Hey guys!
I've got the new iPad and apple tv 3 which is great together!
I have a receiver (which is located in the living room) with Zone2 option and also have outdoor speakers which are connected to that Zone2.
When I sit outside i want to use my great speaker system and use the outdoor speakers using AirPlay and ATV and stream the content to my ATV but the thing is that when i do that I lose my video on the device and the tv (which is in the living room) shows my video feed.
That of course is a problem coz I enjoy my great speakers but can't watch the video (like YouTube video or something else)...
Is there a way to stream the sound only to the ATV?
I found discussions of people who don't manage to stream their video to the ATV and only managed to stream their sound but that was an error and things like firmware update solved their problem...
Found no discussions of people who TRY to stream only the sound, like I want to...
Does anyone have an idea that can solve my problem?

It's actually very easy and doesn't even require splitting the video stream and extracting the audio track from it (which is pretty easy if you have a desktop computer).
If you don't want to play back protected content (non-music videos purchased from iTunes Store), all you need to do is getting GoodPlayer, letting it play audio in background (Settings > Background Audio) and connect to your ATV in non-AirPlay mirroring mode. It'll happily play back the audio track of the video while you can do anything in the foreground. (Note that, in addition to GoodPlayer, other background audio-playback players may also work - it's just that I've tested GoodPlayer in this regard between my ATV3 and iPad 3. Let me know if you need more - for example, a list - info on them.)

You can each have your own ID for your own iTunes accounts, but in order for a device to stream via AirPlay to the same Apple TV, everything must use the same homesharing ID. This is not the same as your iTunes account ID (although it can be for one of the devices)
