Streaming TV options and Devices
We are considering dropping cable in my house. We have a TIVO with the capabilities of recording OTH and we analyzed most of the shows we watch and most are available OTH.
I am then considering subsidizing it with a streaming device and service.
Question for those with experience in the matter.
What devices would you recommend? No I do not have a smart TV and do not intend on buying one.
I have been looking at Roku, NetGear etc. what I like about NetGear is it seems to have a text search function and a little QWERTY keyboard.
We do have an XBOX 360 and I see that it will accomidate pretty much all of the services. Further, I understand Xbox One has some advanced function in this regard but I am not in tending on buying a new console either.
Of the available services, free or other wise what are some recommendations? I have Netflix, and that is ok for watching some streaming things, but not what I am looking for. Hulu, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, Google TV. What I want to be able to do is find and watch current episodes (granted a day delayed) of other shows. Things that may be on Disney or Nick that my broadcast would not pick up.
fyi.... you can have more than one streaming device. However the challenge many of the smart TV channels may not be local and the quality is not the same.
Check your local broadcaster's website. Often shows are available on their website. Just plug your computer into your TV for the big screen experience.
Warning... while you get the content. It will not be the same quality as from a cable provider.
not all streaming content is HD. If it is HD, pay attention to the picture quality compression... it's far worse than cable.
some say sound is the other half of the TV experience.... is the stream/internet content stereo, surround, or just plan mono.
love the convenience of a PVR to record multiple channels and watch content anywhere in the house.

My photo stream used to work fine. But after removing all the photos to separate folders in my computer, my new photos are no longer streaming to my PC. They appear in the photo stream on my other devices - iPhone5 and iPad Mini. It's just my PC that's missing the photos.
When I open the iCloud control panel, I cannot turn on the photos. That option is ghosted. I'm running on Windows 7 with iCloud 3.0. Any ideas on how I can fix this? All help is appreciated! Thanks!Hi Kevinmvb,

Video streaming of DRM movies, purchased from iTunes and other vendors, to any iOS device is not working.
I am not sure if you really understand the issue at hand. Possibly that you are just scanning, not reading the whole text, or simply that you just want to close a thread with your last words or derail it for whatever strange reason. So far you have been more destructive than helpful, but again this could be ignorance at best.
If you would have had the decency to read the entire thread you would have come to the conclusion that every manufacturer, I came across, has posted FAQ's to this issue but Apple. Find a short excerpt below:

Last known fix for Find my iPad? How is this not an included option for devices that are currently turned off. Absolute no brainer. Thief steals the iPad and turns it offline, or user loses it while it has low battery, lost forever. Brilliant.
If the iPad was running iOS 7, the thief/finder will not ever be able to use it.

I can't find the option for "devices" on the left sidebar in itunes, where my ipod should show up? It has disappeared. How can I get it back?

If you click on View in the top menu, and then click on Show Sidebar, then you will see the Devices listed (when your device is connected) under the Library and Store.
The reason it disappeared is because that little "iPod" indicator that shows on the top also has the "Eject" button right next to the iPod name, and it is really easy to click on that instead of the button itself....

I have the Kindle app on my I pad
I want to eliminate the books I've already read (I have a LOT).
On the regular kindle you can switch between cloud and device but that is not working on my I pad.

ThanksThe Kindle app has a menu on the very bottom center of the screen that allows you to switch from a device and cloud view. To remove a title from the device, tap and hold on it. a pop menu will apear that allows to add the title to a collection, remove it from the device, or download it from the cloud (depending on its current status).

Shared photo streams in iPhoto and Apple TV
Why is this proving so difficult for Apple to get right?
All I want to do is create private albums that I can share with family and have them sync back to my Mac so that all I need to do is organise my photos ONCE (i.e. on iPhone or iPad) and see these albums in iPhoto where they are also backed up locally.
I've created a shared photo stream album, shared it with my wife... she can see it on her phone... great.
I look in my iPhoto and there is no sign whatsoever that I've ever created a shared album. Just the main photo stream mess as usual.
Also, I go to my Apple TV and the same thing, just the same "every photo ever" mess.
I've recently taken to using Vimeo because this provides exactly what I need for home video. Create edited video in iMovie for iPad or Mac, then upload it to Vimeo, and share it only with family. HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 color M551dn - Optional USB Device port
Hi, I'm hoping to buy the optional wireless print server (HP Jetdirect 2700w USB Wireless Print Server J8026A). There is one problem though, the optional USB device port seems to not exist on my printer. I only notice that the USB logo is present where the port is supposed to be. The plastic in the area is squared off as though it is some sort of break away tab and the port is underneath maybe.
There is no reference to this in the manual anywhere and I am really unsure how to proceed. I don't want to damage anything.
If someone experienced with this model (preferably an HP Employee) can confirm the availability of the port and tell me how to access it (Is it a break away tab?). Part of the reason why I bought this printer is the optional Wireless N print server.
Thank You in advance.Thank You for your reply. The port you are talking about is the front panel port for walk-up usb printing and firmware upgrades. This port is indeed available on the higher end LaserJet 500 (NON-MFP, printer only edition) as I just used it to upgrade the firmware. The port I am talking about is the one on the left side in the ports section which you use to plug in the optional print server (not the computer I/O port).
This is shown in the official manual and the spec sheet so I'm 85% sure the port is there, hp can't advertise and mention something that is not available as this would be a big problem and make the 2700w print server incompatible when it clearly states that it is. I just need someone to confirm the availability and clear my confusion (either from HP, or another owner who bought the wireless print server 2700w). -

I have 84 photos in My Photo Stream on my iMac and was previously able to get all of them in my screensaver on Apple TV. After a recent upgrade I can only get 3 pictures on Apple TV. On my iPad there are 18 pictures. How can all of the pictures be synced to all of my devices?

How many photos are stored in My Photo Stream on my devices and computers?
Your iOS devices keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos in the My Photo Stream album. From there, you can browse your recent photos or move the ones you like to your Camera Roll or another album to keep them on your device forever.
Because your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to have all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically downloaded. In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, select Photos (or Photo Stream) > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will be imported into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture.
What happens to my photos if I turn off My Photo Stream?

The images in My Photo Stream on your other devices are not affected. Images added to My Photo Stream are saved on the iCloud server for 30 days from the date you added them to My Photo Stream. When I tried to create and apple id using my gmail account i found that somebody has already created an apple id using my gmail id. So I gave forgot password option and reset the password of the id. But for resetting the security questions, link is going to some other email id which is created by the other guy. Now the problem is that the other guy also can reset my password and access my account.
I contacted apple customer care and they are not ready to help me saying that I need to give information about the last device I logged in using this id. How can I give it when I did not create it?:) Also they are saying this account has been verified and that could happen only if someone has hacked my gmail account and verified the id using the link sent by apple.
Later I did some experiments and found that this is a security flaw from apple. Somebody has created the id and never used it(I tried to loggin to icloud and it was saying this account was not used it any apple device). The account became verified when I reset the password.(This is a bug, account should be verified only when we click on the verification link sent by apple).
The other mistake apple did is that they allotted my gmail account to someone before it's verified eventhough it cannot be used unless verified. Actually apple should allot the account id only after verifying the email address.
Apple customer care is not ready to help and I am tired of fighting with them. Can any of you guys suggest any means of getting back my gmail id to use it as apple id?I don't think you're going to be able to. I would guess the other person used your address by accident, and when he found he couldn't access the account (because you'd changed the password) he abandoned it. Your GMail address is now locked to that account and even if it was changed you can't use it to create another.
You already have an Apple ID, which you use to log in here; you can use that to create an iCloud account if that's what you are trying to do. If you want to create a different Apple ID just get another free address such as a Yahoo one. -
Is there a way to download an entire shared photo stream to your iOS device from the url?
I recently dropped my iPhone, resulting in a pretty total breaking of it. Luckily, apply care is awesome and I got my phone replaced the next day. My only issue is that I lost the ~3000 photos I had taken on a recent trip to Japan. These photos were saved on a photo stream that was then shared with others that went on the trip, however. My question is: is there a way to download that entire stream back onto my iPhone? Where I am I do not have internet access a lot of the time, and would like access to those photos all the time, as I would be able to if they were saved on my phone.

Indeed, photos can be downloaded to your iPhone. Videos, however, cannot be downloaded to your device.
Can photos and videos be saved or downloaded from a shared album?
Yes. After photos are shared, anyone who can view the shared album can download and keep them permanently. Videos can only be downloaded to a Mac or PC. On an iOS device, videos are streamed from iCloud and can't be downloaded.
On a compatible iOS device, you can save photos to your Photos tab or Camera Roll.

I have a gen 3 ipod and can't get it into disk mode. In itunes it does not have the option and I cant figure out how to do it on the ipod touch itself. Any ideas?

I have installed bootcamp by the bootcamp assistant and worked properly.
Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another Mountain Lion System and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. However, Bootcamp still remained in the Startup Disk in the System Preferences. When I tried to boot Bootcamp using the Startup Disk it did not boot and received a message that there is no bootable device. I have not lost any data and can read Bootcamp partition from both OS X systems. Please advise how can I boot Windows / Bootcamp again? Thank you.Recommendation 1: Use a VM for this. It's essentially a giant C.F. to do this with native booting, and is potentially fragile.
But if you're going to ignore that and do this anyway, realizing that it can break anytime in particular with OS upgrades, and that it's very difficult to impossible to resize the three volumes once you've installed the systems:
1. create three partitions, setting each to be the size for OS X copy 1, copy 2, and Windows respectively. The Windows partition needs to be set to MS-DOS format (actually FAT32) which later in the Windows installer you'll reformat as NTFS. Do not use Boot Camp Assistant to resize/partition the disk, it simply won't work for this use case.
2. install OS X copy 1
3. install OS X copy 3
4. Use gdisk (available at sourceforge) which is a command line only application, to create a new hybrid MBR adding only the last partition (Windows) to the hybrid MBR and setting it to be bootable. As a concequence you will not be able to see/share either OS X volume from within Windows. The Windows NTFS volume will be visible from within OS X.
5. Install Windows to the only partition its installer should see (confirm size), you'll need to format it NTFS first, and I suggest using the fast format option if available.

i am using an array to write values to a text file, is there a way to re-use that same array on the same page... after the values has been writen to a file, clear the values and use it again(no need to re-size it), just use it again....
