Streaming Video in pdf-based ebook
I have created a pdf file with streaming video. In other words, using the multimedia tool in acrobat 9, I specify a RTMP URL which points to a specific video on our streaming video server. Everything works perfectly in the PDF.
After packaging the PDF in ACS4, the streaming video does not work in the resulting ebook.
Is there some restriction that is preventing streaming video using the RTMP protocol from working? Has anybody successfuly placed streaming video in their ebook?
I have placed a SWF in my base PDF document and packaged it as an ebook. Video does not play. I do have the poster image of the video visible but I am not able to start the video. There is no active area on the video for me to do anything. Is there any document I have missed that explains how to embed a video into an ebook?
There are a number of different opotions in flash to generate a SWF file for imported video such as:
- Loading a video with playback component
- Embedding a FLV in SWF and play in timeline
None of these options work for me.
If anybody has been successful at this, please let me know the procedure. Thanks in advance for your help.

Streaming video in PDF on Android?
We are creating a PDF with links to several streaming videos on our FMSS. We have found links that work when viewed on Windows or Mac, such as this:
rtmp://enterprise-fmss.ket.org/vod/mp4:gedc__000101.mp4
But those links don't work on an iPad. For iOS devices, we use links link this:
http://enterprise-fmss.ket.org/hls-vod/gedc_010100_16x9.mp4.m3u8
However, neither of those links, or the equivalent hds-vod links work when the PDF is opened on an Android device. We've tested on an HTC Evo with Acrobat Reader 10.2 (the latest version), and on a Kindle Fire.
Any suggestions? I've searched Adobe's support offerings and the Internet all morning without finding even tangential mention of this issue.
Thanks in advance for any insight or things to test/try.
-daveThanks for the reply, but maybe I was not clear in my question.
It is working on iOs when we view a PDF with the .m3u8 link listed above.
It is NOT working on Android, whether we use either of those links.
Any suggestion on getting streaming video in a PDF to play on Android?
Thanks,

Streaming Video to PDF Without Flash: Is It Possible?
I'm creating an interactive PDF that needs to be fully supported on both desktop and mobile devices, which has limited my options considerably as mobile support for interactive PDF elements is very limited [I can pretty much only rely on hyperlinks to take me from page to page as well as to external websites]. My client wants videos included, which work inside of the mobile app were delivering to [Documents by Readdle] when embedded as part of the file, but they also want the PDF to be under 25MB, which isn't practical when it comes to compressing 6+ videos and not completely throwing out the quality.
The solution I need is streaming video that would work without the use of a Flash widget, as Flash is not supported on iOS. Does that exist, or is the only way to stream video from an online source inside the PDF document with Flash?
I'm creating the documnet with InDesign CC, and have access to the entire CC Suite. It's theoretically possible to define an external media URI which uses a non-Flash protocol if you skirt around the edges of the ISO standards but there is no software out there which can do it, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
PDFs with video and interactivity are simply not suitable for mobile deployment. Your project will either need to split the deliverables (PDF for desktop, native app for mobile platforms) or publish using HTML5 in a browser and use something like YouTube to push the media content. -
(Streaming) Video in PDF Functionality? and other fun things.
Hi guys,
I'm creating an internal nationwide newsletter for my company Opening in Full Screen. I've have a four minute video introduction from the chairman at the top of the page.
The Plan in theory is that the user will read the blurb then click on the poster of the video.
Then the video should open in a floating video (in the middle of the screen) and play automatically. And close when finished.
I've just used the insert video action in PDF. Used "clicked on content" floating window. Auto hide controls.
My problems are:
The floating window always appears in the top right, there is no setting on how to correct this.
The video doesn't automatically play. You have to move the mouse over the window to unhide the controls and press play on what look to be a blank window. Once the window opens id really like the video to start playing. then once its finished for the movie to close.
Also on some machines the timeline bar on the player has a bright green hatch across it. The video plays fine. I just want to know what it is.
From the research ive done, it seems this could be possible to do all in flash and insert a floating swf with the video.
But im quite a basic user in flash. So im looking for advice/help/moral support or just a nudge in the right direction.
Im using adobe pro extend 9.1. Ive got a flv 320x240 with is stream from my companies internal web server.
ChrisYou can do this by using embedded Flash/Flex content in the PDF. Write or otherwise acquire a simple video player in Flex that points to your company internal webserver, and then embed that Flex app in your PDF as a Rich Media annotation instead of the video itself.

Streaming video link to play inside PDF
I'm not having any success placing a .mp4 streaming video link in Acrobat Pro X that will play inside (not embedded) the PDF. My client has provided me with a couple of links, and the video tool field accepts it, but nothing plays. I can download and embed the actual file from my desktop fine. Being a long time print designer, this is my first attempt to create an ebook with video from an existing print project - so i have limited understanding of formats, server behavior, and such. Can anyone help me?
Thank you for the quick response. I misunderstood. I was thinking that by using the widget and an H2.64 video for iPad (mp4) that together it was creating streaming video in a PDF that is not converted to Flash or swf, which as pointed out is not compatible with iPad. So, the pupose of the widget is that it allows streaming of video (e.g. mp4) for a PDF viewed on a computer vs. embedding the actual video in the PDF? ..and it still converts the video to Flash?
My goal is to have an iPad workbook of sorts w/ a video player that is streaming the video vs embedding it.
- PDF seems to be out unless I want to link it and have the video open in a browser.
- I tried creating an epub using InDesign, which allowed me to embed the mp4 and played on the iPad fine in iBooks, but it makes the epub file large and I'd rather stream the video.
- When using the "place a video from url option" in InDesign, the epub will not play the video in iBooks and only shows the poster image.
Do you have any recommendations or even other Adobe tools that will help accomplish my goal?
thanks! -
Is it possible to stream video into a PDF document with HTML 5?
I'm trying to get around using flash to stream videos into my interactive PDF documents, as it's not supported on iOS. I'm wondering if there's a way to use HTML 5 to acomplish something similar. I have access to both InDesign CC and the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Pro.
An alternative is to separate the quiz pages to a separate document and include it in the main PDF as a file attachment. You can create links in the main document to the attachment so that it opens in a new window. When this quiz document is closed, the main document will be open.

Streaming video in interactive pdf
I have read everything I can on this subject, and although it looks like I should be able to do it, I have so far been unable to make it work!
My dilemma: Creating an Interactive PDF from InDesign CS6, and I would like to include links to various streaming video's throughout the pdf. I would like them to run within the pdf (as a floating window), not pop out to the users web browser. I would like people to be able to play them, and then play them again if they need to listen again, aka, loop, I guess.
My attempts: I have created the Play button (to launch the video) in InD and when I exported it to PDF, I tried to set the video up there. I had minimal success with that route. I've also tried to do the whole thing directly in InD, including the link to the video, but had no success.
I have downloaded two different replacement Flash players and tried to make both of them work, but with no real success. However, I fully admit that I am not as technically savy as what they expect, since I really don't get the whole "do this in Java" part. I tried to copy their script stuff in and replace my info where I saw it fit, but apparently there is other things going on that I am not getting.
Help! If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Or even if there is somewhere you can steer me to learn how to do it, I'll go. So far, most of the stuff has been programmatically over my head, even though I'm not a new user to the Creative Suite, unfortunately, it's all been print.First thing to say is that if you want the video to be truly "streaming" it has to be served from an Adobe Media Server platform using the RTMP/RTMPE protocol.
Assuming you have the URL of such a stream, it's easy to create the annotation in Acrobat Pro. If you want a floating window and a 'play' button, this is the simnplest workflow as there's no scripting involved - but you need to create an image that will act as the button.
Use the Add Video tool to draw a region on the page which will be where your 'play' button sits.
In the Insert Video dialog there's a "Select file or insert URL" field at the top - in there, type the full URL of your RTMP stream.
Click "show advanced options" and select "Create poster from file", then open your image of the play button.
Set the playback style to "floating window" and enter the dimensions of the stream.
Click OK.
If you already have the graphic for the play button as part of the PDF page itself, you can use a different workflow:
Use the Add Video tool to draw a very small region on the page which will be where the video poster sits (it has to exist but you want to hide it somewhere...).
Set the video options as before and click OK.
Use the Add Link tool to create a link region around the play button shape on your page.
Set the link to "Custom Action"
On the Actions tab, set the event to "Multimedia Operation (Acrobat 9 and later)", choose your video from the list, then in the lower area choose Play. -
Storing streaming video in OrdVideo
Hi,
I have looked through the documentation and some examples, but am still wondering whether the URL used for a HTTP data source has to have a file name in it or it can be just a URL with no file name (a true video streaming server).
Also, if a streaming URL can be used, how does Oracle know when to stop streaming? i.e I may only want to store streamed video for 5 minutes, or 10 minutes etc.
Any help is appreciated.

THE PROBLEM
============
If you currently use Presenter then you already know that it
has some serious limitations when it comes to using video. Slide
based video must be in SWF format encoded using the old Sorenson
codec. That means your video files must completely load before they
start playing. This leads to long wait times for users; want to
play a 5 minute video? Expect a 2-3 wait time while the movie
loads. Forget longer content like training videos.
The video's dimensions are also limited as quality degrades
quickly at large sizes.
Adobe will tell you to put streaming flash video in the
presenter panel but this area is tiny and still uses the old codec.
You cannot pause, rewind and fast-forward the content and what
about if your show runs without the presenter panel showing?
If you update your presentation frequently, expect long wait
times as the video files are embedded and must be uploaded to the
server each time you make a change.
THE SOLUTION
=============
RefinedVideo is a complete solution to these issues as it
allows you to play high-quality video in fullscreen resolution with
no waiting. Use streaming FLV format using On2 VP6 compression to
provide higher quality at lower bandwidth with almost no wait times
in most cases.

All the Best,
TerryAhh, if only that were entirely true!
While you're correct that you can embed flash in your
Presenter files, it's still not possible to use the latest On2 VP6
codecs which is what you need to do if you want high quality large
size video files. Using the Sorenson codec which is what would be
required by your suggestion, means that the video tends to be quite
pixillated and limited to a small frame size, otherwise you end up
with lots of buffering delays.
Our solution allows you to run fullscreen video of unlimited
length from within Presenter and it works in self-paced
presentations and meeting room environments too.
On the issue of posting information about a product on a
Forum, my understanding of the concept of a forum is that it's a
place for the exchange of ideas and solutions. This forum is
located under the menu item of "Communities" on the Adobe site and
many people come here looking for ways to solve problems and
exchange ideas.
I've had numerous people contact me saying they have been
looking for exactly this type of solution but have been unable to
find it. It's only spam to you because you have no need for the
solution but to those looking for a way to deliver specific types
of training content, it's exactly what they came to the Forum to
find.
It's not my intent to offend, only to raise awareness.

With latest version of Flashplayer - unable to download streaming video with realplayer
The latest version of Adobe flashplayer (11.5) was loaded today (nov 9, 2012). As a result, using either IE9 or Firefox, I was unable to download streaming videos using Realplayer, where it was set up by "Download the Video". I had no trouble with Flashplayer 11.4, although I had the same problem with Flashplayer 11.3.
Good comments by Hicks. While I an not as anti-iMovie '08 as many others appear to be, I really agree with both his assessment of the product and some of his distribution ideas. However, rather than the simple 2-tier product recommendation he presented, I would personally like to see a renamed version of the current iMovie '08 product be distributed as a free application to users and keep all of the DV based editors as a part of the current 3-tier iLife (which can be purchased by users who wish more editing/plug-in compatibility at a moderate price but are not willing to invest the money or time to use of FCE), FCE "prosumer", and FCE/Studio true profession editing packages purchased according to individual user needs.
As we have seen in the past, innovations introduced by FCE frequently filter their way down to lower level software as enhancements over time. In addition, we have also seen a number of the new iMovie '08 developments being adapted to other applications as the means and processes are developed to do so. Frankly, I am curious to see where all these new innovations may lead given the opportunity for further development. -
Embed streaming video from my own Server into InDesign CS5
Hi all,
I try to place a streaming video into my Indesign CS5 Document. InDesing seems to find the File, cause it shwos up the preview image in the Media Window, but the videoslider nor the play-button of the media-window is working.
the link (Red5 Streaming Server):
rtmp://87.230.53.80/oflaDemo/personaltv/bewerbermagazin/wuerzburg/test/video.flv
When I export it as an interactive PDF, and I click on the videoframe, it first shows the security dialog as expected, but after that it is only the empty player and the progressbar looks like it can not connect to the streaming server.
Is there a workaround?
Thanks in Advance for any hint!
P.S.: If I load it from my webserver via http:// ... it works great.I think this isn't really an InDesign issue at all. It sounds like an Acrobat issue.
First, you haven't said what version of Acrobat you're using. I'm assuming Acrobat X Pro?
I've used this with a friend's Flash Media Server so I know it works. What version of Flash server do you have installed?
I the link you provide I see a spaceband after the word "test" in the path. Could that be a problem?
Other than that, it appears that you're following the requirements listed in the Help file for Acrobat X Pro.
If you have further problems, you might post this on the Acrobat User Forum. -
Issue with pdf-based forms (correspondence)
Hello!
Got a problem with our new pdf-based forms.
I'm tryinig to print a new pdf-based dunning form via correspondence (fpcopara), but there is no option where i could say "XFP data stream with context evaluation". There are only the options for Smartforms and SapScript.
Has anyone an idea how to solve this problem?
Thanx 4 helping! Here are the steps (from generating the form up to the point where i want to print it):
1. Transaction Code: SFP (Form Builder)
create a new interface with interface-type: ABAP Dictionary-based Interface
2. Transaction Code: SFP (Form Builder)
create a new form. Layout type = Standard Layout, Interface from step 1, create a small layout and activate both (interface an form).
3. Transaction Code: EFRM (Maintain Application Form)
create a new application form with these options:
Form Class: IS_U_CA_DUNNING
Form Type: PDF-based Form
PDF-based Form: (name from step 2)
After creating this new application form, try to activate it.
4. Transaction Code: FPCOPARA (Correspondence Printing)
For this step you need printable dunnings in your system.
Tab: Print Parameters
Output Device: your XFP-Printer
And there we are... There is no option for PDF-based Forms at this point. Just the options for SapScript and Smartforms.
Thanks

I'm experimenting with inserting Streaming Video into Captivate Lessons. I've set up an Adobe Media Server (AMS) to stream the video.
When inserting Multi-Slide Synchronized video, it's not clear whether/how I can insert a Dynamic Streaming Video link in a synchronized Multi-Slide Video.
(The Dynamic videos can switch between videos of varying quality based on the user's available bandwidth.)
I think you're supposed use a URL that points to a manifest file (.F4M), which catalogs the videos of varying bitrates. However, I can't seem to get it to work in Captivate and Adobe is a little vague on how/if one references the manifest file. (i.e. I can't find any examples.)
So, does Captivate support dynamic streaming video?
If not, which is more robust in Captivate? HTTP progressive download or regular (non-Dynamic) RTMP Streaming Video? Thanks Erik.
We did some more tests/checking-around and have convinced ourselves that the URL needs to point to the manifest file in order for Dynamic Media Streaming to work.
When we examined the Adobe Media Server sample web page (below), we found buttons to select different media sources.
The 'Multiple Bitrate' button under RTMP Dynamic Streaming Sample is mapped to the URL of an F4M (manifest) file.
The 'Single Bitrate' button is mapped to an individual mp4 file.
We also found more clues in the FlowPlayer RTMP F4M page.
Also, I'm guessing that Captivate can't handle adaptive bitrate streaming from non-RTMP sources based on the menu options. (See screen capture below)
If the menu above is correct, the first choice is the opposite of streaming media, because it says 'Progressive Download'. (Progressive download caches the video file on the client machine.)
The next one is for private Adobe Media Streaming and the third is for 3rd-party Adobe Media Streaming services.
So, I'm pretty much convinced that it's not supported. -
Software to Stream Video to Apple TV
Does anyone know if there is any software (Mac or PC) that will send the streaming video I am watching to the Apple TV? Airfoil does this with audio content without the need to go through iTunes. I am wondering if there is a comparable application for video.
Actually, I found a Windows based software that will. When I want "wrong" I will know where to look.
Don't take anything said in these forums personally. The lack of civility and bad manners that occur a bit too frequently here can be discouraging otherwise. Some people are just clueless when it comes to manners and decorum in a public discussion.
If you found Windows software that will allow Internet video to be streamed to an ATV, I'd be interested in hearing about it. -
TOC, streaming video and screen size
Hello,
A recent project is shaping up to be a video based course. The purpose of the project is to introduce and explain a sales software package.
Before I start to work I need to ensure Captivate 7 can cover three basic requirements;
1. The end user needs must have access to a table of contents so they can switch between slides/content and have the freedom to move about. I know that Captivate 7 can accommodate this.
2. To be able to embed streaming video. It is important that the video appears to be a part of the content and not open to a new window at anytime. Also, the rewind and pause buttons for the video are controlled by Captivate 7 inbuilt buttons and not those of the video streaming host.
3. Ensure the screen size for the learning package is restricted to a specific size. Reason being, some users will have desktop screens at 1920 x 1080 and this will "blur" the video content if stretched to that size.
Might Captivate 7 fulfill items two and 3?
Your feedback and thoughts are most appreciated!
Sincere thanksHate to answer my own question, but I figured out a way to do what I want.
1. open movie file in QT.
2. Resize it and save.
3. Open file with skin movie (see link in my orig post).
4. then view < normal.
It basically fits it to the screen which is the exact dimensions of the movie. If I do not view<normal then the movie is offset I can not even see it. And resetting the offset does nothing.
If anyone has a better way (less steps) to get a borderless movie to resize and fit to screen, please let me know. This works but it is cumbersome.
Thanks.
