Streaming, video playback
I have a problem that seems to be rampant and with few answers but let me try again. Windows media player has stopped playing streams for Comedy Central and other web sites. I can't stream Google video. Radio stations won't stream from their sites. Videos that friends e-mail (in windows media ) have no sound. Can't stream CNN. This seems to be the problem. It has been going on for at least a month now. It might include QT- I don't really understand who and what streaming involves-otherwise QT is OK.
I did the usual - even tried the flip4mac (which caused big problems about 6 months ago, when I installed it the 1st time; with graphics and more. Of coarse they said it wasn't true but I read plenty of other users with the same gripes.I did get it stable again finally.) A couple months ago these latest issues started. Not including the Intel issue and Flip4mac - this problem seems to be common but not quite ubiquitous in the mac world. And I have yet to read on how to fix it. I am an old and faithful apple person but this is really getting personal. Figuring it was worth it I have tried flip4mac again to no avail. I tried many things and of coarse it didn't work and also as usual after uninstalling it the thing still tries to open streams- at least the WEb site interface looks like QT and usually I used to get a codec error that doesn't appear. I still think it is a dangerous program.
But my questions are
1. What programs should I have installed on my computer to stream video and audio?(on the non-QT sites i mean)
2. Is there a way to avoid Flip4mac which seems to be very dissagreeable to my machine?
3. Should I just start trying to give up the simple pleasures or buy a $300 laptop from dell to have for what 92% of the rest of the world already is enjoying? Seriously.
4. Short of that are the answer(s) posted on the Flip4Mac website???
Please don't take offense apple geeks- but somehow you guys are never affected with this melee. Streaming was at the heart of MS's argument with the Justice department and it looks like I am the looser.
Hi, John.
1. Many sites use Real Media streaming format. Download the free RealPlayer for Mac OS X. Click the "RealPlayer - Free" button on that page and follow the prompts.
A number of sites are using Flash-based movies, so having Flash Player installed will help with those streams.
2. WMP is dead. Microsoft (MS) has endorsed Flip4Mac as the replacement for WMP on the Mac. AFAIK, your only other option at this point is to try Popwire WMV-9 Component. I've not used it, but have heard good reviews and feedback. That may also help with WMV files you receive by e-mail.
Both Flip4Mac and Popwire won't play content protected with the Windows DRM (WMA-DRM). MS is determined to restrict content protected with Windows DRM to the Windows platform, DoJ and EU suits notwithstanding.
3. Frankly, if a site isn't distributing streaming media in a platform-independent format that works on the Mac, like Real Media, then I'm disinterested in their content. The few sites in whose streams I'm interested, e.g. C-SPAN, NASA TV, etc. are Mac-friendly.
Unfortunately, the Mac is still just five percent of the personal computer market, so sites tend to design with Windows users in mind. If the sites also use MS development tools, it exacerbates the problem as those tools use proprietary extensions to Web standards that only work in IE on Windows. This is why some sites, e.g. e-banking, often only work with IE or on Windows with IE.
If a site expects their streams to be played on a PC running Windows, and you can't get either Flip4Mac or Popwire to handle it, then you're out of luck. I would not hesitate to complain to the site since they are losing audience by failing to distribute content in a platform-independent format.
4. Beats me. If you're not finding the answers there, you should contact the Flip4Mac folks.
5. You wrote: "Please don't take offense apple geeks- but somehow you guys are never affected with this melee."None taken. I simply don't care that much about streaming media: if it doesn't play in QuickTime, Flash, or RealPlayer, I go elsewhere. There are also a variety of Internet-based radio stations that stream in either Real format or are available in iTunes.
Good luck!

Live Streaming Video Playback on CBC - Flash Jitter Bug
Not sure how many of you are trying to watch the playoffs on CBC on your playbook, but I have a problem with jitter during playback, but only with live streaming video. This is not a connection issue. Apparently it's a b-frame issue where the frames are played out of order, and an adobe flash bug. It appears exactly the same as this example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh_8EPfbpZ
Very hard to watch, and extremely frustrating. Does everyone experience this with the CBC site? Is this a playbook issue, or just something with my unit? Any suggestions for resolution?
Go Canucks Go!The more serious problem is that TSN is carrying tonight's Canucks game... and they seem to be stuck in 1995 and are not streaming the game. Ugh!

Improving quality of streaming video playback
Here's my system:
PowerMac G4/450 Sawtooth tower, upgraded to dual 450 mhz processor
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128 MB video card (modded version)
OS Tiger 10.4.11
Online video playback from sites like YouTube, Hulu, etc. is choppy. It's not too bad. Probably only a few frames short. But, it is noticeable, and I'd like to improve it. I've played around with some of the settings in the ATI Display Preferences, but haven't been able to get it to look any better. Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking I might have to upgrade the CPU to something faster, but would like to avoid that if possible. Also, if it matters, I only have the G4 connected via S-video to a TV. That's it. (And one more thing - I have a broadband Internet connection, and the other computers that share the connection have no problems with video streaming, so I'm pretty sure it's not a lack-of-bandwidth issue.)Just to clarify, you don't mean because the computer was originally a single 450, do you? 'Cause it was upgraded to a dual 450 at some point in the past. (I picked up the computer used.) I figured I'd probably have to do another upgradeto the processor to fix the problem. But if the fact that the machine was originally a single 450 is always going to hold it back, then there's no reason to upgrade again.

Streaming video playback is choppy
Hello,
I'm own an Aluminum Powerbook, OS 10.3.9. Before I reformatted, the play back via Firefox and Camino was just fine. Now it's choppy and it skips. Is there anyway to fix this problem?
Thank you.
-SDon't use Camino or Firefox on Youtube.
Flashplayer 9 is crap.
I find Safari works on Youtube for me. Also try Mozilla 1.x or Netscape 7.
Flash 9 loves Safari,AOL for Mac,Firefox 1.x, and Netscape 7 not anything else!
Also depending on the video you are viewing it won't matter.
Some videos uploaded are bad quality.
Too bad you can't use Tiger as it has beta 10 of Flash and runsin Camino(choppy still) and Safari 3(great).
Sadly it is beta and most sites won't tell it's installed.

Video Playback Pauses when streaming from iTunes to itunes
Hi,
I have a 2011 iMac running OS X Mavericks Server and I use this as my main iTunes library computer. I also have a 2013 (latest model) MacBook Air running Mavericks. My WiFi network comprises of 2x Airport Express's, both the latest models and configured for both 2.4ghz & 5ghz frequencies.
Using Home Sharing, I like to stream video from my iMac's iTunes library to my MacBook Air. The problem is that playback pauses every few minutes. The only way to resume playback is to close the video window and open the video again. This problem occurs regardless of video quality (SD, 720 or 1080) and on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi settings... On the odd occasion this problem doesn't happen at all.
I experienced this problem before upgrading to mavericks so I don't think its mavericks related. And I don't experience this playback issue when streaming to ipad mini, iphone, or apple tv... It only happens when streaming from imac to macbook air...
Please help if you have a solution.Try:
ffmpeg -i rtsp://localhost:8554/test.sdp -acodec copy -vcodec copy -re -f flv "rtmp://168.187.121.71/livepkgr/mystream&adbe-live-event=liveevent"
I don't strream ffpmeg from my source, but I stream h264 from my source, and this works when transcoding.
Hope this helps! -
Interested to find out whether it's possible to add playback
controls to a Prgressively Streamed Video without using a skin?
If so - Any pointers
ThanksWithout skins you can make your own buttons and use them to
control the movie with acionscript. I am assuming you are using a
FLV Playback Component to display the video. Give it an instance
name like vid. Then use actionscript to control the video.
For play button:
on(release){
vid.play();
Stop button:
on(release){
vid.stop();
And so on... -
Changing subtitle stream during playback of Video track
Hi all,
Can someone please help me out with changing the subtitle stream during playback of a video track? The subtitle button doesn't seem to cycle through the 4 languages we have on the track.
thanks!hey nipponese (great name)
when you press the subtitle button, does it restrict you, or does it not go through all 4 subs, or maybe even, does it go through more than your original 4?
do you have a menu, or is it just the video, audio and subs?

Buffering/streaming hesitation on video playback
Please help,
I have tried following and combos thereof to improve video playback;
(Buffering & Streaming)
1) System properties; Advanced Tab; Settings in Performance; Advanced Tab;
(Virtual Memory, increase Paging File Size by 100 and 150.)
2) Display; Properties; Settings; Advanced Tab; Troubleshoot;
(Hardware Acceleration from Full to None.)
3) Media Player; Tools; Options; Performance;
(Change connection speed)
( Network Buffering)
(Video Acceleration, Full to None)
4) FireFox; Tools; Options; Content;
(All combos of Block Pop-ups; Load Images; Enable Java and Advanced Tab)
5) All plug-ins are updated
Used to function properly, but something now interferes…
Fire Fox ?
Add-Ons ?
Plug-Ins ?
What may have happened?
Retired @ 76… [email protected]In Firefox '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information''' > '''Open Containing Folder''', would open the current profile folder. You can copy the individual files or the whole folder to another safe location. This would ensure that personal data files like the bookmarks, website passwords etc. are safely backed up. Please also see [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Backing%20up%20your%20information?s=backup&r=1&e=sph&as=s this].
After creating a new profile and starting Firefox in that new profile, you can '''Open Containing Folder''', exit Firefox and copy and overwrite the history + bookmarks file ('''places.sqlite'''), passwords ('''key3.db''' + '''signons.sqlite''') etc. from the backup to this folder.
You can also try to check the current internet connection speed and ensure that OS network settings are okay: http://pingtest.net/ -
Hi everyone!
It seems that I'm not able to view this streaming video from France by Fazz Music. After clicking on the link for the stream, a Safari window opens with a black background and with what looks like the QuickTime control bar.
Here are my settings for QuickTime...
System Preference > QuickTime > Browser > both selected/checked
1) Play movies automatically
2) Save movies in disk cache
System Preference > QuickTime > Advanced > MIME Settings > all selected/checked
Here are the versions of QuickTime and Safari that I'm using...
QuickTime 7.3.1
Safari 3.0.4
So why won't it play?
Thanks!With regards to Perian, after downloading and installing it I checked Safari's list of 'Installed Plug-ins' and there's nothing there about Perian. Also, I didn't see the application or player anywhere within my HD. Shouldn't there be something, somewhere? Actually, I do see Perian.component under /Library/QuickTime.

Multiple video playback issues
Hi All,
I would dearly appreciaty any light anyone could shed on this issue - I have run into a couple of Flash bugs that have stumped me for quite a while, and my deadline is aproaching fast.
Essentially, I would like to play back 3 reasonably high res videos (On2 VP6-S) simultaneously in one Flash App (using flash.video, netstream and netconnect - code only). Unfortunately, when I do this, the video playback drops a lot of frames, however, CPU usage does not go much above 50% - spread over both cores. I'm using a Core2Duo. If I play the same 3 videos simultaneously in 3 separate flash apps (FP10), they play much better (and use close to 100% CPU). I even tried creating it as an AIR app with 3 separate windows (NativeWindow), but that made little difference. I have lodged this as a bug via the Flash Bug Reporting System (http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-2341).
And yes, I do need to be doing something as crazy as this - it is for a pretty cool kiosk app, so I know what hardware will be used (and it has a good Graphics Card).
One promising workaround appeared to be playing back a single NetStream in multiple Video instances, as it is NetStream that does the decoding, so I could decode once and present it in 3 places. Two of my video objects are actually the same flv (on different monitors), so there would be a 33% saving right there. If necessary, I could encode both flvs into a single 1920x1200 flv (I've checked - it would play back ok) and then use video.mask to show the relevant bits.
However, another bug has been reported at http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-920 saying this does not work - Video in the object that last called attachNetStream(ns) will play, all others will freeze. They do mention a workaround that gets both videos to play - reset the size of freezed videos on ENTER_FRAME event. However, I cannot get this workaround to work - my first video is empty (not even frozen).
So there are a couple of things I would love any feedback on. Firstly, if anyone has insights on how I could get this to work. Secondly, if anyone could try the "multiple videos on one netStream with workaround" code below (simply copy, paste and point to a relevant flv) and let me know if it works and the versions of software they used, I'd be very thankful.
---------------Code Begins-------------
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.media.Video;
import flash.net.NetConnection;
import flash.net.NetStream;
showRedrawRegions(true); // both the placeholders and the entire window redraws every frame.
// When only video1 is attached, only video1's region is redrawing
// When both videos are attached, both video's regions are redrawing, BUT video1 is empty.
trace ("Capabilities.version = " + Capabilities.version); // = WIN 10,0,22,91 // in Flash CS4 10.0.2
//var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection( null ); // Got Eror: 1137: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected no more than 0.
var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
nc.connect(null);
// Connect nc here ...? Unnecessary in this case?
var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
ns.client = new Object(); // Simplest way to deal with cuePoints and metaData by doing nothing. For more, see http://blogs.adobe.com/pdehaan/2006/07/playing_back_flvs_with_actions_1.html
var stream:String = "test.flv";
var video1:Video = new Video(); // Defaults to size of 320x240
var video2:Video = new Video(); // Defaults to size of 320x240
video2.x = 320;
addChild(video1);
addChild(video2);
ns.play(stream);
video1.attachNetStream(ns);
video2.attachNetStream(ns);
// PROBLEM: Video in the object that last called attachNetStream(ns) will play, all others will freeze.
// See WORKAROUND below for solution:
//WORKAROUND to stop the first split stream from freezing:
addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, onEnterFrame);
function onEnterFrame(e:Event){
video1.width = 320;
video1.height = 240;
trace ("video1.videoWidth = " + video1.videoWidth);
trace ("video2.videoWidth = " + video2.videoWidth);
// When only video1 is attached, video1.videoWidth = 1920, video2.videoWidth = 0
// When both videos are attached, video1.videoWidth = 0, video2.videoWidth = 1920
---------------Code Ends-------------
Letting me know what exact versions of the following software was used would help a lot:
- Windows/OS (e.g. XP SP3).
- App code was written in. (e.g. Flash CS4 IDE 10.0.2, Flash Develop 3.0.1).
- App code was compiled in. (e.g. Flash CS4 IDE 10.0.2, Flex SDK 3.4.0.6955).
- Type and Version of Flash Player used (e.g. Standalone Debug Flash Player v10,0,22,91).
The versions I used are listed above.
Lastly, for what it is work, I found three interesting/informative results, but they didn't help me:
- When only video1 is attached, video1.videoWidth = 1920, video2.videoWidth = 0
When both videos are attached, video1.videoWidth = 0, video2.videoWidth = 1920
- When only video1 is attached, only video1's region is redrawing
When both videos are attached, both video's regions are redrawing, BUT video1 is empty.
- var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection( null ); // Got Eror: 1137: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected no more than 0.
So I had to change it to:
var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
nc.connect(null);
Does this mean my NetConnection class is different and maybe incompatible with this workaround?
Many, many thanks,How to view/hear pretty much everything:
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not. -
Judder in flash video playback
I'm having this weird random judder issue when viewing video playback using the flash player (e.g. youtube). The judder is very noticeable on 2d scrolling videos such as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAdHJYUjeVo&feature=g-all-u#t=10m40s. I have gotten the judder to go away only a few times by jumping around video resolutions and using the "show video info" option. It's totally inconsistent in terms of a fix. Video info shows that it's running at 30fps and not dropping frames. I've used current versions of firefox, chrome and IE with the same results. I'm seriously baffled.
This just didn't become an issue with the current version of flash. It's been an issue across many versions of flash.
In the ways of the troubleshooting I've tried with no success:
Uninstalled and reinstalled flash.
Turned off hardware acceleration.
Disabled plugins and extensions.
Uninstalled my antivirus (avira).
Done a clean wipe and install of my video drivers.
Disabled aero.
Any ideas or suggestions would help a lot. Thanks in advance.

Bug report has been submitted.
I'm pretty sure the judder has always been there. Sometimes it's more pronounced and sometimes it's not. As I said it's very inconsistent. But 95% of the time there is judder.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash ver. 10.3.183.43 and unfortunately it did not fix it.
It's so weird. It really looks like it's dropping fps at random and yet flash player video info says it's fluctuating between 29-31 fps and not dropping frames.
I really don't understand how me going back and forth between resolutions and fullscreen and right clicking on the video to bring up video info will make it go away randomly. -

in Adobe Connect.
THE PROBLEM
============
If you currently use Presenter then you already know that it
has some serious limitations when it comes to using video. Slide
based video must be in SWF format encoded using the old Sorenson
codec. That means your video files must completely load before they
start playing. This leads to long wait times for users; want to
play a 5 minute video? Expect a 2-3 wait time while the movie
loads. Forget longer content like training videos.
The video's dimensions are also limited as quality degrades
quickly at large sizes.
Adobe will tell you to put streaming flash video in the
presenter panel but this area is tiny and still uses the old codec.
You cannot pause, rewind and fast-forward the content and what
about if your show runs without the presenter panel showing?
If you update your presentation frequently, expect long wait
times as the video files are embedded and must be uploaded to the
server each time you make a change.
THE SOLUTION
=============
RefinedVideo is a complete solution to these issues as it
allows you to play high-quality video in fullscreen resolution with
no waiting. Use streaming FLV format using On2 VP6 compression to
provide higher quality at lower bandwidth with almost no wait times
in most cases.

All the Best,
TerryAhh, if only that were entirely true!
While you're correct that you can embed flash in your
Presenter files, it's still not possible to use the latest On2 VP6
codecs which is what you need to do if you want high quality large
size video files. Using the Sorenson codec which is what would be
required by your suggestion, means that the video tends to be quite
pixillated and limited to a small frame size, otherwise you end up
with lots of buffering delays.
Our solution allows you to run fullscreen video of unlimited
length from within Presenter and it works in self-paced
presentations and meeting room environments too.
On the issue of posting information about a product on a
Forum, my understanding of the concept of a forum is that it's a
place for the exchange of ideas and solutions. This forum is
located under the menu item of "Communities" on the Adobe site and
many people come here looking for ways to solve problems and
exchange ideas.
I've had numerous people contact me saying they have been
looking for exactly this type of solution but have been unable to
find it. It's only spam to you because you have no need for the
solution but to those looking for a way to deliver specific types
of training content, it's exactly what they came to the Forum to
find.
It's not my intent to offend, only to raise awareness.
Thanks for listening,

Streaming Video, iTunes rentals are too dark. Help!
Using a 2013 Macbook Air, pretty much fully loaded.
I'm noticing that movies purchased on iTunes, as well as Handbrake rips of my own DVDS, and streaming through both Amazon Prime and Netflix, using MS Silverlight and Quicktime... all videos are too dark. Or rather, the shadows, and blacks are all too dark. I have worked with display calibration and am convinced that calibration is not the real issue here. While using my photo editing software, Lightroom 3, there are no such problems. It is only the video playback.
Is anyone else having the same issue? I had a 2012 MB Air which didn't seem to have this problem as badly as this one.
Looking for solutions.
Thanks!I have gone through calibration. Please note that other applications, such as Lightroom appear as they should. I also have a spyder, and though I haven't calibrated this monitor, the fact that non-video applications are appearing as they should tells me that the problem is probably with the application running the video playback, or something do to with the video processor. Also note that the problem occurs with both Amazon streaming, Netflix, and videos ripped with Handbrake, and that it occurs with MS Silverlight, Quicktime and with VLC player.
I read some discussion streams from 2012 with the same problem, and calibration was not the issue. I have tried every built in display profile, manually gone through calibration in "expert" mode, etc... I just don't think this is the real issue. Nor does it appear to be a hardware issue. At least not the monitor. Other applications are working just fine. -
Video playback controls in full-screen mode???
I just downloaded a TV show and want to watch it full screen. Unfortunately, in full-screen mode I can't seem to figure out how to control the playback (e.g. Rewind a few seconds to hear something I missed).
I tried all sorts of keyboard shortcuts to no avail. Am I missing something?Ba,
It may be of interest to know that streaming video codecs are designed for computers of a specific age (CPU and GPU speeds).
DVD quality streams MPEG-2 compression at about 10 Mbits/sec, and the older MPEG-1 compression, designed for NTSC television, streams at about 2 Mbits/sec. At 10 Mbits/sec, the processor must work faster to decompress & display the image. The latest compressions are based on MPEG-4. Even a G3 iBook could display MPEG-4 full screen; so I don't think you need a faster GPU.
Microsoft codecs & containers, the last time I checked, were ancient: based upon MPEG-2. So, check your speed:
DSL Reports speed tests
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
If you use Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.11n is fastest.
Increase the cache size for your codec, if you can. It needs to be contiguous, so I dare to recommend iDefrag 2 (US$30) to clean your remaining disk space and obtain about 20 GB of contiguous space. Video display uses many operating system files, which are likely not fragmented; but you can also de-fragment the Windows codec if it lies in over 100 fragments. (The Spotlight database usually has over 1000 fragments; but pauses in it don't affect one's pleasure in using it.)
My low-resolution DVD is interpolated by my graphics card, and look beautiful at maximal resolution. Streaming graphics apparently isn't programmed to interpolate low resolution: it demands high resolution and high bandwidth.
If you can't increase the cache in WMP, you can lower the resolution of your monitor. That may be why this System Preference was designed to sit on the desktop's top bar.
