  • Streaming .wmv files not working

When I go to stream .wmv file from the website I use to access school lectures, I get an error message from what looks like Flip4mac saying "QuickTime Player must be installed to run this application". In an attempt to resolve this I reinstalled Flip4mac 2.2.3.7. This still did not work. Does anyone have any ideas?

Here is what I read from Flip-4-Mac web site. You need to install Quicktime 7 from your install disc for this to work. Then reinstall Flip-4-Mac again.
Repair Permissions and restart your computer.
JeffSp8, going to the finder and getting info...then choosing Quicktime won't force the browser to play the video. This only work for videos playing locally from the hard drive.

  • Cannot get audio from streamed .WMV files

Up until a week ago I had no trouble seeing & hearing CNN's streaming video. As of about 3 days ago, the audio is gone. The only changes to the system (15" PB with 10.4.2) have been the Graphics Update and the recent Security Update (which postdates the problem).
Repairing Permissions made no difference, reinstalling Windows Media Player ditto. Is there any way to change the plugin that opens .WMV files? I recently bought and installed (Long before this issue) WMV Player, which allows running .WMV files in Quicktime and wonder whether it would have better luck.
    Help?

Thomas...don't know for sure but check out this link...see if this is the problem

  • The mystery of streaming WMV files

I have downloaded WMV and it works on some sites for video streaming. The operative word here is "some".
Some sites the video opens in the page as intended, some others the file opens in a separate WMV window after a diolog box asking if I want to try it, then there are the other sites that either indicate a missing codec or say "WMV not detected"
The one I'm really interested in cracking is CNN.com. Many of the features there are video only, and I cannot get them to play on my MacBook. Can anybody? If so, mind telling me how?
If you go to cnn.com, you will see many articles with a small camera beside them. Those are the ones.
    Thanks
    Mike

Hi. I have an Intel iMac and I had the same issues with Safari and Camino. Firefox PPC worked on "some" sites as well. Yahoo's world cup videos didnt work....now that *** big time.
Work around? without the need of downloading anything you can see the videos on both safari and Camino, but they have to run under Rosetta.
To do this quit safari, open the finder, right click safari, get info and put a check mark on "open under rosetta."
that would make safari run a little slower (i have 2 gigs of ram so i dont really see a big difference) but you should be able to see wmv on safari.

  • Firefox 5.0 doesn't play Window Media Player (WMV) files.

Not sure when this problem occurred since I don't really play WMV files until recently, but I do remember it working correctly before Firefox 4.0. Whenever I load any type of WMV file in Firefox, it doesn't seem to play the files. The "Play" is there, and it seems that the file is completely loaded, but when I press the play button, it says "Connecting", then it doesn't say anything and nothing appears. Before, I would get a message on the bottom telling me the % of the download/stream was buffered, but not anymore. Any idea what the cause of this might be?

  • Streaming WMVs in Quicktime?

I use both Safari and Camino for web browsing, and something has started happening with both that's driving me insane. Quicktime attempts to play any embedded or streaming WMV files, but it can't do it correctly; sometimes it skips, sometimes it fails, and every time it can only load the first quarter or so of the video. It acts like it's loaded the stream completely, but ALWAYS stops early.
I've had to resort to viewing page sources and downloading the WMV stream that way. Is this a settings issue that can be changed in Preferences somewhere?

    Wow. I didn't know I even had that plugin installed. A more hardcore friend of mine installed some stuff on my machine a while back, so I guess he threw that in and thought he was doing me a favor. ^_^;
    Thanks!

  • Firefox 6.0 w/ win media player plugin 1.0.0.8 enabled ALWAYS asks if I want to open a .wmv file with Win Media Player.

Firefox 6.0 would not open .wmv files, so I downloaded and installed M/S windows media player firefox plugin, ver 1.0.0.8.
I have checked using the plugin mgr that it is installed and enabled, but firefox still will not open .wmv files - It still brings up a window asking if I want to use Win Media Player to open the file.

You have an outdated version of Flash installed.
Uninstall the current copy of Flash then reinstall, instructions here.

Open a Finder window then select MacintoshHD in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the LIbrary folder then the Application Support folder, the Input Managers folder and the Scripting Additions folder.
Move all the files above in bold print to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari after you have re installed Flash and deleted all those files.

  • .wmv file play like streaming files in Quicktime.

I have downloaded some .wmv files, and tried to play them in both Version 10 and the Quicktime 7 Pro utility. I'm on an iMac using operating system 10.6.5 and I have flip4mac installed. The movies open, but seem to be streaming from the internet, and cannot be fast forwarded or edited. I have looked in the Quicktime and flip4mac preferences, but there doesn't seem to be any settings that address this. Help!
    Peter

The movies open, but seem to be streaming from the internet, and cannot be fast forwarded or edited.
If by this you mean the file opens and the playhead starts moving but the "progress bar" is still cacheing data, then this is normal if the data in in an WMV file container. QT has to partially decompress the data for playback/use. If you want to avoid thios delay, you can save the data in its partially decompressed format to an MOV file but it will take up more hard drive space than the WMV file version. If you allow the file to decompress or load the MOV version and you still can't "scrub" or FF the playhead, then you may have a problem. As to editing/converting the file, as Limnos points out, the free Flip4Mac "Playback" component does not allow you to do any real editing or converting of the content and you would have to purchase one of the decoder, bidirectional or advanced codec packages to do this.

  • Firefox 18.0 hangs on wmv files, plugin IS WORKING

Since 18.0 can't click on wmv link, the entire browser HANGS and have to close ALL TABS. I went to the site at Microsoft and downloaded the XP-Windows7 plugin, and installed it. (by the way, that plugin is 6 years old - can't MIGHTY MICROSOFT write a new one?)
So now the plugin shows installed and working, but every single time I try to access a wmv file, it HANGS FIREFOX. I have my OWN WEBSITE that I can't even open anymore, how embarrassing. HELP!
Windows 7 Home Premium on Intel i7 64 bit with 6gb RAM

Amitshree - Yes, I already updated it, right after I posted the question, and the problem did go away! I just did an update within the last week, but turns out that was on my OLD computer (to run netflix), not this one, which was 3 versions back! I just don't keep up with release numbers, have so much software running on this computer.
So I guess besides learning my memory is failing me, I also learned that the recommended fix of installing that old plugin didn't fix anything, LOL!
By the way, I think NoScript is the '''''most brilliant add-on that has ever been invented''''' (I'm a security expert), and if anybody's plugins can't get a long with it, I'll do without everything else but NoScript!!!

  • I have three .wmv files on my web site that play automatically on firefox at the same time.

All three wmv files auto start one right after the other when you visit the page in Firefox (I'm using 5.0). There are no start/pause buttons beneath the video screen. When using internet explorer everything works as intended in that you have to push the play button. I updated my plugins for firefox and that did not remedy the problem. Can someone please help me out with this?

I performed additional updates of flash player and it resolved this issue.

  • Recently switched to Firefox. WMV files in Outlook Express will not open. Message: NEED CODEX.

"CODEX acquired" appears in lower left of screen, but file does not open. I think it did work before , when I use Internet Explorer.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • I can't open wmv files with Lion.  Windows media player doesn't work.  Any suggestions?

macfriedchikkin's reply would make sense to you if you were trying to open a camera, but if you are trying to view streming media from a web site that is a different story. It helps to be very specific about what you are tyring to do on these forums.
I belive you would go into Firefox Preferences menu and tell it  to use VLC as the application to play WMV files. I'm still running Tiger,  however, so I can't tell you if it the latest version works wel that way. The Tiger version doesn't seem to, but a lot may have changed since then. (I'm only just getting around to installing Leopard next week now that there are too may apps I can't run on Tiger. ) Perhaps someone else on this forum can better help you set  up the player in your browser.
Or you can cut out the middleman and give VLC the direct video URL:
Choose Open File from the File menu and paste in the URL of the video, say,
    http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-1
    or http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-2
Your media should play this way. Dont forget to save the playlist for later.
I'l keep investigating on my end, and yes, I'm also  encouraging certain people who are streaming windows media in to switching to a different format
