Streams vs standby for HA

We are trying to replace standby technology with Streams in 10.2 on standard edition of DB; first I think we need to upgrade to Enterprise edition, right?
Next is there any goucha's there that we ned to be aware of Streams? and if it is a good idea - has anyone done this and is happy with how it operates?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

You right. It is strange because core Streams component AQ is available in Standard Edition.
From Streams Admin Guide:
A real-time downstream capture configuration means that redo transport services use the log writer process (LGWR) at the source database to send redo data from the online redo log to the downstream database. At the downstream database, a remote file server process (RFS) receives the redo data and stores it in the standby redo log, and the archiver at the downstream database archives the redo data in the standby redo log. The real-time downstream capture process captures changes from the standby redo log whenever possible and from the archived redo log
whenever necessary.
I do not see something like max protection mode.

  • When request is submitted it goes for pending standby for long time

    Hi all,
    Does anyone have any idea about this?
    When im running oracle standard report on production its going to Pending Standby for long time and then it works normally whereas when i run the same report on clone server it directly runs without making any wait. Can anyone advice me what could be the issue related to this. Im unable to get to the root cause, so need your advice.
    Ours is 12.1.2 EBS - RAC (11.1.0.7) - HPux (11.31) env for production

  • How to Create Manual Standby for a Oracle 11g RAC with ASM to Single Instan

    Hi All,
    I have a task to configure a Single Instance Standby Database with ASM for 2-node Primary RAC+ASM database.
    Version using : 11.1.0.6 Oracle 11g --- *" STANDARD EDITION "* Please note datagaurd will not be supported in standard edition.
    Primary database - 2 -Node RAC using ASM storage (All datafiles, redologs, controfile and archive logs)
    Need to setup a single instance standby database manually and than using scripts to transfer the archive logs from primary server to standby server to do recovery time to time.
    Please let me know if there are any configuration document(s) which can help me to set the manual standby? or need your kind help to give your valuable ideas how to go in above situation.
    Thanks in advance

    Well if the archive logs are stored in ASM on the primary nodes, you almost definitely want to be using RMAN to access them. Then to transfer between primary and standby there are many options, this is essentially the step that Data Guard takes care of - so if you (and I) are running Standard Edition, this is the part to "worry" about.
    I'm not really sure what you mean by this:
    As in standard edition the archive destination will be on ASMI don't think the Edition of Oracle (Standard or Enterprise) dictates where and how you store your archive logs, but it's possible I've misunderstood what you mean...SE dictates that database storage for RAC will be ASM, including archive log files. Anything else is not officially supported. I haven't tested but it may be that you can use LOG_ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST to specify a local filesystem for archive log files as well.
    If that doesn't work you'll have to script rman "backup as copy" jobs regularly and then transport the results of that.

    By the way, it seems Robert has been pretty helpful, it's polite to give him some points dude. And since this is your thread, not mine, give him a "helpful" from me too :p
    El DBA
    Incidentally if you are forced down the RMAN backup as copy route then this will likely throw your current backup retention strategy somewhat, you'll need to think carefully about when an archivelog can be deleted following backup, how many times it might be backed up and so on. I do understand, and have argued for, the use of SE RAC. I also understand and have argued for and implemented manually managed standby a number of times. However by the time your primary database is a RAC instance and you need a standby for DR etc then you really have to look very seriously at whether Standard Edition is still the right investment or not. You will be spending a lot of DBA time managing and troubleshooting this, and you will find that it is less reliable than the off the shelf solution. I suspect that you are very close to the point where an EE installation becomes a worthwhile investment here.

  • Mail Stops receiving mail after phone in standby for a while.

    We are currently running Exchange 2003 SP2. We have direct push enabled on our server.
    I have setup an iphone to use one of our exchange account and mail is received straight away on the phone. However once the phone has been on standby for a while (Cant give exact time) mail stops coming through on the phone. As soon as you bring the phone out of standby and do something on the phone the missing mails come through. We know there is nothing wrong with our server as we have a WM6 device that constantly receives the same mail.
    Anyone else had same issues?
    Settings on phone are :
    iPhone 3G
    2.0 (5A347)
    Wifi is disabled
    Push is enabled
    3g is enabled

    We upgraded to Exchange 2007 and upgraded phones to Latest OS and problem seems to have gone.

  • Single-instance manual standby for a three-node RAC database

    Hi all,
    I am wondering how it is possible to create a manual standby database for a rac primary database.
    Oracle versione is standard edition 11.1.
    I have experience creating and managing manual standby for single-instance database; I am wondering if and how I can instruct the single-instance standby database to discover and apply the three redo threads that I will copy from the primary site to the standby site.
    Should I use rman to catalog all the archived log on the standby site ?
    Should I configure many LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameters to point to many different path, one for each primary instance (i.e. one for each redo thread), and let rman automagically discover all the archived logs ?
    Should I configure only LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1 , put archivelogs from all threads in the same folder, and let rman automagically discover all the archived logs ?
    Thanks for every answer!
    Andrea

    Hi,
    indeed i catalog all transfered archive logs in front of the recover process.
    During the tests i believe (iirc) i was unable to recover from transfered archivelogs without catalog them first. But this statement is out of my mind, i am not 100% sure for this, sorry.
    Some more details.
    Because it is a standard edition, i have to use on the RAC side ASM. So our normal scripts to transfer archivelogs from primary to standby are obsolete.
    So i decided to put the whole standby thing into the database. Now the primary database uses external scheduler jobs to do the work. The standby side is not using ASM, so there is no need to handle the logs in any special way.
    The steps are:
    1. Get SCN from primary and standby
    2. Transfer the logs for the gap from ASM to "normal" filesystem.
    3. Transfer (and compress, if not in LAN) to standby archive dest
    4. Catalog on standby side
    5. Recover on standby side
    6. Delete on normal filesystem (on both sides, but on standby with a delay of 2 days just to be sure)
    The steps on the standby side are both using the primary scn from step 1 as a parameter to avoid error messages during the catalog or recover call.

  • Cascading physical standby from another physical standby for primary rac

    my supplier told me that is possible mount a cascade physical standby from a physical standby for my rac installation.
    but according the note "409013.1" seems not:
    "Cascading a logical or physical standby database from a physical standby database is supported as long as the primary database is not a RAC database and is not part of a Data Guard Broker configuration - the support status of this configuration is unchanged from previous documentation."
    before was possible? do you know why not now?
    has anyone mounted? can I allow my provider to mount?
    oracle version: 10.2.0.2.0

    Is it possible this scenario?YES

    Two days ago I noticed a noise my MBP started to make all by itself, it started basically right after I changed the sync contacts option in iTunes for my iPhone to sync my contacts along with my gmail contacts. I've changed it back since then but it continues to make the noise and log file error entries are still posting. Below is my error log file for this issue from the first instance to the last one. Can someone please tell me how to fix this?

  • ITunes 10.4.1 freeze (hang) when webradio stream drop out for any reason.

    Hello,
    My iTunes freeze (hang) when any webradio stream drop out for any reason; e.g. when ISP renews the IP, the radio station has limited the stream duration (as some do) per connection or wireless is cut off e.g. by closing the lid of the MacBook.
    I've to force Quit then iTunes. If I wait (up to an hour for testing) no hung or crash report get generated, iTunes still stay unresponsive.
    System: MacBook Pro 2011
    OS: OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)
    iTunes version: 10.4.1 (10)
    iTunes 3rd Party add-on's: None
    Any ideas out there?
    Cheers - Lupunus

    I will commiserate. I have this same issue. In some cases, the stream will stop and restart after 15-30 seconds; repeat. In other cases, the stream will stop, and iTunes will switch to the last radio station in that playlist. Then that station will play for a few minutes, and stop, and sometimes restart. But usually iTunes will hang (spinning beach ball) and must be force-quit.

  • Trouble accepting invitation to a photo stream on iCloud for PC

    My father used to have an iPhone so he has a valid Apple ID already. He still wants to be able to be a part of the photo streams my family is creating and showing nowadays. We downloaded iCloud Control Panel for his Windows 8 laptop and all of the photo streams he was previously subscribed to show up. However, when I sent him an invite to the newest photo stream we can't figure out how to join it. When we click the "subscribe" button in the email he receives it pulls up a new page that says "To subscribe to...photo stream on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, open your invitation in the Mail app, and click the Subscribe button in the message.", nothing about how to subscribe on PC. We could really use some help! We need to know how to subscribe to a photo stream on iCloud for a Windows 8 PC.
    Thanks!

    A video cannot be saved from within a shared stream.

  • How to solve this problem, pls help when I try to see remote camera system from home."Dual streaming is required for HTML viewing"

    How to solve this problem, pls help when, I try to see remote camera system(spec dvr) from home. The Error I get is "Dual streaming is required for HTML viewing"

    I had the same probelm and found that the problem lies with 64bit programs such as safari and microsoft internet explorer. I have resolved the issue on my PC based server by using a 32 bit ie and same on my mac by using the same running windows under parallels.
    So far the problem with the 64 bit side of it is still to be resolved.
    Hope this helps and gets you guys up and running until suchtime a 64 bit solution is found.

  • Streams AQ: waiting for messages in the queue

    Hi,
    For some reason, I've to run the owb mapping manually. First I try to run it in this way:
    declare
    n_result number;
    begin
    n_result:=dwrr104.wb_rt_api_exec.run_task('LOC_ZONE2_DW','PLSQL','MAP_RMS_CUSTOMER');
    dbms_output.put_line('result :='||n_result);
    end;
    This script just kept running endlessly. I noticed The wait event in database for this session was: "Streams AQ: waiting for messages in the queue"
    However, if I run the 'main' function of this mapping directly like this:
    declare
    -- Non-scalar parameters require additional processing
    p_env dw.wb_rt_mapaudit.wb_rt_name_values;
    begin
    -- Call the function
    :result := dw.map_rms_web_ptrackcode.main(p_env => p_env);
    end;
    it can work without any problem.
    Any ideas?
    Jeffrey

    Hi Jeffrey,
    need to change them?Yes, you need to increase value for AQ_TM_PROCESSES parameter (set it to at least 1).
    It is a requirements for target database (database where runtime services is run):
    Look at OWB installation guide (it is for OWB 10gR1 but for later OWB versions requirements is the same):

    It seems that you do not understand the problem at hand. I can listen on a m3u list using iTunes, VLC and other players, but I wish to listen on m3u lists as streaming music when I am on sites such as eMusic. For instance, I cannot listen on sample music at eMusic, but must download it first. Thus, it is not possible to listen on streaming music with Firefox. On the other hand, Opera and Safari handle m3u streaming music very well.
    Can you listen streaming music or samples at eMusic using Firefox without downloading m3u-list on your local disk?
