Street pilot 2720 gps

I bought a used garmin street pilot 2720 gps.  I updated with the numap version I purchased at best buy. Now it says my maps are locked. I contacted Garmin and they said they could not help me since I was not the original purchaser of the gps. Is there any way to unlock the maps without going thru Garmin.
Thanks,
Jim

Nope - Garmin is the only person who can provide unlock codes for maps.
However, it seems slightly odd - The fact that you are the original purchaser of the map upgrade should have permitted you to do this.  The maps would then be locked to the unit.  There might be some weird interaction between a numap upgrade purchased by the previous user maybe?

  • Third party windows 8.1 driver for VMSpc Version 3.0

I purchased a HP Stream 7 to use as an engine monitor for my motorhome. The tablet will not recognize the driver for the JIB. I have the latest driver and it installs perfectly on my Pavilion x2 with the same operating system. Nothing seems to work with the tablet.  It appears to install manually without the JIB connected. Once I plug it in it states the software cannot load. The software is VMSpc from Silverleaf Electronics. Any help out there? I can use the Pavilion for the project but really want to use the stream 7 due to it's size.
    Thanks,
    Donald Tomlin

Yes, the jib connects by USB and I used a combination OTG cable to connect the power, GPS and USB to the same port. I have the program installed on half the screen and Delorme Street Atlas with GPS on the other side so that both are on the screen at the same time. Works great in all respects except for the driver issues so no engine data at this time but it looks cool. Also ordered a window mount for the PC so I can mount it like a Garmin. May be a problem with the Atom processor used in the PC.?

  • Success with Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 w/GPS

Has anyone had success using this app with their macbook/pro? The gps is usb, and before I make the plunge, I want to know how well this is working with the mac/windows combo. TIA...

    Muskeg,
I've used Streets & Trips without any difficulties. I have not however used the GPS feature of it. Since it loads the necessary drivers with it when you install the application I don't see why it wouldn't recognize the GPS device once you have it plugged in.

  • Is GPS in HP mini compatible with Microsoft streets & trips software?

I installed it on my HP mini 210-2000. It finds the built in GPS and tells me to drive the route, but I get no vehicle on the map
and it goes no further. Just keeps repeating to drive the route. It shows good satellite signals and vehicle speed flashes on & off.

you can format the harddisk first.
complete the installation of any os..
then keep your HP recovery disks and boot in..
now you can be capable of using recovery disks
    Hope this helps

“Error while downloading” message on E71 with updated GPS USA Maps
I’m sure I’m not the only one having this problem but I recently updated my maps on my Straight Talk Nokia E71. The phone says I have map download V 3.03 10wk bo4 Mw Open GL LM MN, Map version 0.1.25.114.and I’m using Nokia Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23. After I installed V3.03, I installed it and download the 1.46GB USA map file and the three turn by turn files. But when I first started the GPS app I started getting the following error “Error while downloading”(This is on phone only)
I have tried to factory reset the phone, re-format the 8GB memory card, remove City data and GF files and even unloaded OVI Suite and reload it. But every time I select GPS app and start to find places or my position, I get "Error while downloading" message. I’m new to this phone and didn’t get a respectable book from Straight Talk. So I don’t know much about this phone or Nokia OS. What is this error and how do I fix it. Also when I try to sync from the phone I get the response "system error". Ovi suite on the PC says I have downloaded all the USA maps and English voice  with street names. Please help I’m at a lost.
    Computer specs
I am running Win-Vista, with a Broadband connection. 3 GB Ram, 2 gig Pentium dual core.
Tran’s flash card has plenty room left on card over 5 gigs left.
If I need to delete a file on the phone please tell me the exact file name because I’m not sure which one to remove from the apps folder.

    Welcome to the forum!
Whilst easy for me to say as keep very little data on device, I would suggest backup essential data then delete E:\cities + ,qf file followed by resetting device to "Out of box" state by keying in #7370# then 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by yourself). At this point you would need to open OVI Maps application on device to re-initialise application and re-define necessary folder structure on memory card for device to be recognised by OVI Suite > Maps to re-download your regional mapping.

  • Network based and a-gps, data use tests

i was trying to find this kind of info, but only found others asking.
i hope this is useful info for others, especially while roaming.
skip to the bottom for conclusion,
this is the process i took:
    i called nokia tech support,
    their phone support his horrible,
the people on the phone don't actually know anything, and have to look up everything you ask them.
    they were the worst.
    i emailed nokia tech support.
    my message was:
"i would like to know the difference between assisted gps positioning, and network based positioning. these are 2 of the 4 options on my nokia e66 for positioning methods. i would like to know if network based positioning uses internet data from my service provider to obtain my gps position. i am especially concerned with this function while i'm roaming internationally, as i do not want to be charged for roaming data use."
in about half hour they responded w/ an answer, and then 45 min after that someone else responded w/ an answer.
the first response, minus the hello's etc. was:
"In response to your email, Assisted GPS and Network Based positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic so you will be charged for data use. Only "normal" GPS and Bluetooth GPS do not generate additional costs related to data traffic.
Normal GPS is quite slow and does not work indoors. Therefore, it is recommended to enable at least A-GPS to get a faster position outdoors.
Network based and Wi-Fi positioning also allow you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation."
    the 2nd response was:
"In response to your inquiry, the difference between Assisted GPS positioning (A-GPS) and Network based positioning is that,  A-GPS uses satellites while Network based positioning is based on information of your cellular network environment. It allows you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation. Both positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic (unless you have configured the device to use Wi-Fi connection to make the internet connection). The cost may vary while you are on roaming. Kindly contact the service provider for information about data transmission costs."
i can also respond w/ more questions, but instead did some tests, starting with sitting home, indoors, and eventualy moving to a window w/ lots of sky.
    test 1:
    i enabled:
    integrated gps
    network based
    assisted gps
    opened maps,
    set maps to be offline,
set default internet access point to my home wlan network,
    closed maps,
cleared all counters and the log on the phone's communication log.
    opened maps
there is a pink circle around the area i may be in,
the icon that would show gps satellite strength, changes to show the cell phone antenna icon.
but the packet data counter is sending/receiving a total of around 3-8kb immediately, and over the course of time, it keeps adding up, every 1-2 minutes, and it is shown as packet data to/from the access point "at&t internet"
over the course of ten minutes, it's been about 43kb.
and i can tell on the phone's home screen that the packet data connection becomes active when it does.
the maps kb indicator still says 0.0kb, with a line through the double arrow packet data symbol.
    test 2:
    now i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs
    i turned off a-gps.
enabled only integrated gps and network based.
    i open maps,
the same thing is happening as with the assisted gps on, except i connected to my home wlan once, in the middle of connecting to at&t internet 10 or so times.
everything else is happening the same.
    test 3:
    i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs.
    enabled only integrated gps.
i open maps, and there is no evidence of packet data connection, or wlan connection.
nothing is showing up in the logs or packet counters, and there is no pink circle around where i may be.
if i set maps to go online, w/ my wlan as the access point, or at&t internet, their respective icons show up on maps, as well as the phone's home screen.
the phone's log show respective connections are made but w/ 0.0kb, and the phone's packet counter, as well as the maps kb usage, say 0.0kb.
    test 4:
set maps to offline, w/ my wlan as access point.
    exited maps,
turned phone off for a bit to test gps from cold start.
    turned on phone,
    cleared counters/logs,
enabled only assisted gps and integrated gps.
open maps, there's no pink circle around where i may be, just the red dot of where it thought i last was.
there's about 4-5kb of data transfer,
then i bring the phone to the window where there's a lot of clear sky, and my location is found pretty fast.
i know that w/o assisted gps, w/ only integrated gps, it takes a while to get the gps signals.
i went back and forth to/from the window, and there was packet data use again only once more, not continuously like w/ network based positioning.
    so to conclude my tests,
setting the maps to be offline, still uses a-gps and network based positioning.
network based uses a more data, continuously,
which is the opposite of what i thought, i thought a-gps would use more, so i was using network based on and a-gps off while in canada. whoops.
using assisted gps uses about 5-10kb, which, when roaming, according to at&t, they charge 1.95cents/kb.
might be worthwhile for getting a quick gps signal, nothing worse than waiting forever for it to connect.
the only way to be completely clear of data use is disable network based and assisted gps, or set the phone to offline mode.

A-GPS: This uses information from cell network to get a rough idea of where you are. It then uses this information to figure out which satellites to look for. Result is a faster satellite lock. So A-GPS uses a few kB of data to get an initial position, but navigation is done using GPS satellites, which does not require ANY data connection.
Network based: This uses information from the cell network to plot the current position when GPS satellite signal is not available, ie indoors, in a tunnel, etc. Position info derived from the cell network is not as accurate as that from GPS satellites, but serves as a stopgap until GPS signal can be re-acquired. Network based positioning used your data connection EACH TIME the satellite lock is lost. So the amount of data used is dependent on the quality of access you have to the GPS satellites. If you don't lose the connection to the GPS satellites, then you won't use any data.
The ‘offline’ option within the Nokia Maps app only refers to street, POI, etc searches, NOT to A-GPS, Network based positioning or to connecting with the GPS satellites.
If you want to navigate without using ANY data connection, set A-GPS off AND set Network based positioning off AND set the Internet option in Nokia Maps to Offline. Do this and you will not use any of your data connection allowance when navigating. There is no need to put the phone into flight mode.

  • Questions on handheld GPS systems

Hello!  My sister and I are preparing to go to the Uk in two weeks, I know next to nothing about the GPS handheld system, but the following is what I would like to have, if it’s possible, or at least help in determining what the best product is. (also, which is the best board topic for me to post this under?, I didn't see a GPS option to choose from)
I primarily want something that will when we are walking around London, and other English cities to help us find the places we want to go to specifically. Also, the nearest tube station, or restaurant, or if we could just type in “Westminster Abbey” and have the GPS talk to us on how to get us there and to show us specific street maps. So my question is, does something like this exist? What is the best one to buy? Do I have to buy additional download maps, or can I just buy one thing with everything on it? Other things that would be great to have, but probably not possible are:
Does the GPS have internet access? Can I check email and other websites with it?
The handheld GPS, can I use it in the car here in the US when I’m done with my UK traveling?
Will the GPS actually “talk” to me, or have written directions, or both?
My understanding is that it can use 2AA batteries, so I won’t need to charge it, correct?
The website says that battery life is 16 hours, but other things I’m reading implies it is less?
With the above information, is the Garmin Oregon 450 or the Garmin Oregon 450t better? Is there a cheaper option that will accomplish what I need? I don’t really care about geocaching etc, I just want something to help me not get lost. :-) And ideally use in the car when I get back to the US, but even that’s not a big deal.
    Thanks for the help!

Is street view not available in maps with iOS6?

Street View is only supported with Google Maps, which as replaced with Apple Maps in iOS 6.
Apple is constantly working on improving their new Maps service, but until it reaches the level of finesse necessary to be usable, take a look at some alternatives.
Bing Maps offers a very good maps service with Bird's Eye, a feature similar to Flyover. It's arguably better than Google Maps.

  • If I buy a used iPhone 4 without a data plan will the GPS work?

I live in Canada and am a complete newbie when it comes to cell phones and data plans. I am not interested in having or paying for cellular telephone capability.
I've been using the 64 Gb iPod Touch 4 but detest its 0.7 Mb still camera and bemoan its lack of GPS.
Now that the iPhone 4S has been released, there are many folks selling their older iPhone 4s. I'd love to use one of these older iPhone units with their better camera and GPS capability, but don't want to pay for a data plan, nor am I willing to pay $850 for an unlocked iPhone 4S. I'm happy to continue using wireless internet and don't need a cell phone.
Being a newbie when it comes to data plans and cell phones, if I purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone:
    1. Does it need a SIM card (activated or not) to use the GPS on it? If yes, must a deactivated SIM card be provided by the seller or where can I obtain one?
    2. Does the iPhone 4 need to be on a cellular plan to use the GPS?
    3. I can use a deactivated iPhone 4 on WiFi only as I've been doing with the iPod Touch 4, correct?
    4. If I can use a deactivated, non-contract iPhone 4 on WiFi only, will the GPS work and allow me to use GPS-enabled apps? If yes, does it somehow still "tie"into available local cell networks to achieve a position without me paying for (or being registered for) cellular access?
    5. Can future iOS upgrades (say to iOS5) still be performed on a deactivated iPhone 4 without a cell plan?
    6. Do I need to purchase the iPhone 4 from a Canadian seller given my above questions? What other questions do I need to ask of the seller when looking for a used iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance for any help with my newbie questions!

Thanks for that, Paulfromwallasey. I live in a rural area without many cell towers and with WiFi only in my home. I do use offline maps (topographical and street maps) on my iPod Touch 4 outdoors (not needing a signal, WiFi or cellular). I also have a hand-held Garmin GPS receiver but would rather use the GPS in the iPhone (its positional accuracy, while likely being lower than that obtained from my Garmin, is likely sufficient for my needs).
I guess that one of the questions that I was asking is if I were to purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone, and the SIM card have been removed, would the device's GPS still work with GPS-enabled apps (albiet without the cellular-assist)?
Can any pay-as-you-go SIM card be purchased for and used in a deactivated iPhone4? Would this even be necessary for the GPS?
    Thanks again.

  • IPod Touch 5th gen - GPS Very Vague / Not Working Well at All

I've been trying to use the NavFree GPS app on my new iPod touch 5th generation.
All I can say is that it sort-of works - in so much as it displays the vague vicinity I'm in within a few streets, however most of the time it just seems to be constantly hunting around for a location and is useless in the car for actual real-time directions - which seem to be randomly thrown out every now and then.
I've tried locating it in numerous places on the windscreen and on the dashboard but it hasn't made any difference whatsoever.  Also when using it out in the open in walking mode, it will locate me for a moment then will wander off again and will start to show me standing in numerous different streets and places nearby.
I'm very disappointed at the moment because I purchased the full version with all the extras thinking that I've solved my sat-nav needs, but it's unusable as it is.
Can anyone help me with fixing this?
    Cheers.

The iPod touch does not have a GPS radio. For location it relies upon the locations of nearby wifi routers that are in Apple database of routers and their locations. Thus, this app/the iPod alone without a real GPS accessory, works very poorly in a car since it really can't see may wifi routers and without a internet connection, can't access the Apple database to try to locate new routers that it finds.

  • Don't know what to do or who to ask??? GPS stopped working after 4.4.2 Kitkat update.

Don't know what to do or who to ask??? GPS stopped working after 4.4.2 Kitkat update.
I have been on the phone multiple times with Verizon, visited multiple stores and still getting different answers with every different person I talk to...
Since the 4.4.2 update, my phone and my wife's phone (14 or 15 month old SIII's) that worked perfect a couple weeks ago no longer know where they are 95% percent of the time... Location cannot be found and GPS satellites cannot be seen (sometimes after searching for 10 - 20 minutes they will lock on).
And it's not just Google maps, it is all apps that need location (ie. gps status and toolbox, weather channel, etc...)
Google maps has us in the right location 50% of the time  but i think that has more to do with 4g and wifi (although i always know the weather and traffic conditions in the next town over now).
Navigation will set up fine in Google maps until you actual move the car. Then it updates location every couple minutes, but usually a couple streets over from where I actually am. Maybe 1 out of every four or five times I try it, it will start working about 15 minutes after I started it (then work flawlessly, so it can actually work sometimes). But if you end the process and start over to see if it really "works", back to square one with it not knowing its location all over again...
I obviously did all the normal trouble shooting fixes with the battery and sim card removals and even did a "recommended factory data reset" on my phone with no luck. After this didn't work I stopped by another verizon store yesterday that has "tech services" that I was told could run some sort of diagnostics on my phone. After I showed the tech all the screen shots i have taken of what was happening while driving, he said it is a software problem and a very common one at that.
I was told I should either buy new phones or switch to the edge program where i can get a new phones. These don't seem like very fair solutions to me considering before the 4.4.2 update our phones worked perfect and they are both in almost perfect condition after 14 or 15 months...
Will there be a fix to this??? Is it a Samsung problem??? Should I be contacting them???

If it is 3GS, you can update it to iOS 5 and it will work.

  • Plotting GPS data in Diadem

I am analyzing some GPS data and I want to visualize the data on google maps. I remember seeing an exmaple on this topic ( google maps and Diadem interface) but cannot seem to find it anywhere.
I am using Diadem 11.1.0 and I doubt the GPS functionality is not available for this version ?
Please suggest alternate ways  to visualize this if possible.
    Thanks
    Vamshi

    Hello Vamshi,
The GPS plotting functionality became available with DIAdem 2010, and is available as part of the Professional version of DIAdem.
It uses Open Street Map (not Google maps) due to Google licensing restrictions. You can see the maps here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/
You can download the DIAdem 2010 evaluation version here by selecting the "Evaluate DIAdem" section: http://www.ni.com/diadem/
DIAdem offers DataPlugins for GPX and NMEA GPS files, so these can be loaded very easily and then added to a map.
