Stretched QT Export

I've imported into FCExpress 2 from a Sony Digital 8 Handycam through Firewire. All looks good in FCExp (regular non-HD, TV-like aspect ratio).
But when I export to QT Movie and play back in QT Player, the image is stretched horizontally (everyone be FAT now!).
Can someone walk me through my problem, or point me to a good reference?
Many thanks,
BJ

Whether I am just doing a QT Movie or using conversion, the resulting image is stretched horizontally (and the QT Player window seems wider than normal... but not as wide as 16:9)... people are fat!
All looks normal in FCExp... the Canvas window and the image within are normal 4:3 aspect ratio... but the QT Player window...and the image, is wider! Never had this problem before.
Thanks!

  • Video stretched when exported even when "letterbox" is checked

Hi, I'm trying to export a lower quality version of one of my HD movies. I've previously been able to do this when I export using Quicktime Conversion at 640x480 with the "letterbox to preserve aspect ratio" option checked. However, I just did exactly that but when it is exported the video looks stretched and distorted and no letterbox bars appear on it. I've tried switching from H.264 to m-peg4 converter to see if that would make a difference but it is still exporting stretched videos. Why has this suddenly changed, and are there any fixes you know about?
    Thanks!
    Andrew

Try creating a new Project with the Sequence settings matching the footage correctly. Then copy/paste the the incorrect Sequence into the new matching Sequence.

  • 16:9 is stretched when exported to 4:3

I have a project filmed and edited in anamorphic 16:9. However I need to export it in two aspect ratios: 16:9 and 4:3 (letterboxed). The 16:9 version exports with no problems, however the 4:3 is streched!
I have made new sequences in both 720x480 and 640x480. I have copy/pasted the 16:9 footage into both timelines. There is no stretching or distortion in the canvas window, just letterboxes. It looks perfect. However, when I export the picture is streched.
    Any ideas?

There two ways that I know of to convert and export a 16:9 project as 4:3
One is getting a special decklink card with a 4:3 export software upgrade or
when you have the sequence in the timeline double click one of the video clips it will then go to viewer window then click on motion tab, in motion go to distort - aspect ratio - type in 33.33
this will make the clip 4:3, then click on the same clip do an apple + C (copy) do an apple + A (to highlight all clips in the timeline) then Option + V to paste attributes. when attributes window comes up check the distort box and enter. This will apply the 4:3 attributes to all the video clips in the timeline.

  • Video getting 'stretched' after export.... help?

    hi guys...
ok, i have a movie i did in FCE, its just an audio file with keynote slides that are synched to it.
The slides are jpgs, and are 1024x768 in size.
I made a movie, it looked great.... went back to FCE to make some edits, then re-exported it... problem is now the new movie looks a bit STRETCHED....
thats like the only way i can describe it.
everytime i save etc it takes forever so i'd like to get this fixed... lol
I just need the thing to look normal like it did before.... i'm really new with FCE, self taught (and thanks to the help of many of you guys
I think it has something to do with the export.... i selected 640x480 to export it at, i thought thats what i did before.... and thats the size i need the movie in.
seems like its getting stretched somehow
    suggestions?

    export.... i selected 640x480
    1024/768=1.33333
    640/480=1.3333
    So why is it stretched?
I think you might be encountering a pixel aspect ratio (PAR) issue.
Standard definition video, the type used on DVDs, uses 640x480 pixels,
but the pixels are not square. They are stretched to make the end result
720x480. Normally this all happens automatically, which is why many
people don't even realize it's happening.
My suggestion: Set your FCE sequence to be the exact size and format you
want. When you export, don't use Quicktime conversion to adjust the size.
Deal with all the issues in FCE before the export.
Assuming you are working with standard def video, choose a preset
like DV-NTSC 48kHz. When you bring your jpg files into that, you may
have to adjust them in the Motion tab.
Of course, if you really want 640x480, then you can modify the
sequence preset (Sequence Menu > Settings) to set the PAR to square.
Then your 1027x768 images should fit the frame exactly.

  • Stretching When Exporting

Basically I am trying to make a video with footage from a video game, and when I export shorter videos using only one clip it comes out fine. But the problem arises when I compile multiple clips together, and export them. When I am only using one video it exports fine using the HDV 1080i50 compression to 16:9 with out the bars at the top and bottom. But when I try to export a video that has multiple clips it has bars at the top and bottom, and looks basically stretched. In the canvas it also looks fine as far as the dimensions go and no letterboxing occurs. The original format for the video clips is also HDV 1080i50 compression if that helps. I am running Final Cut Pro 7.
    For reference videos:
This is what I get with a single video clip
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc382-lHEwA
This is the effect with multiple clips
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYirXFfSPjI
As you can see I get the letter boxing and it is really unattractive in comparison to to the actual 16:9 dimensions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same issue-strangely, earlier this week, I exported a video from my Sony NEX-5 (native resolution of the video is 1440X1080)using Export > Quicktime Movie > Current Settings. Less than 24 hrs later, I'm exporting, and now my 16:9 movie looks like it's 4:3. I haven't changed anything in the settings, and my other videos look ok in quicktime player, so the advice from the other thread of changing quicktime player settings doesn't work. Nor is anamorphic checked in the sequence settings--per another thread's advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Adobe Media Encoder Export Settings Window Dimensions Problem

Any help on this would be appreciated: I'm on a macbook pro, osx 10.6, using CS4 Web Premium. I used to have an external monitor hooked up which had much higher resolution, so when using Adobe Media Encoder I'd click the Settings button on a video to get the Export Settings window, then stretched the Export Settings window to be the size of my external monitor. Now, I'm just using my laptop, and the export settings window does not have the resize buttons at top left to adjust it back to the size of my laptop, and the bottom third of the export settings window is getting cut off so I can't see the cancel/ok buttons etc.
I've tried re-installing media encoder (via reinstalling flash using the CDs) to try to 'reset' the window sizes, didn't fix the problem.
If anyone knows of any other preferences or something I could delete to fix this, I'd be one thankful dude.

Yes, I was getting the same response. It means Adobe is not using OS native windows (shame on them!).I just tried something with CS4 that worked, though. Try this:
    Quit Media Encoder
Go to UserHomeDirectory > Library > Preferences > Adobe > Adobe Media Encoder > 4.0 and delete the files called 'AMEPrefs.xml' and 'AppPrefs.xml'.
Then restart Media Encoder. For me, this reset the window size and placement. I tried moving the Export Settings window down so half of it was off the bottom of the screen. Once I deleted these files and restarted, the window was smaller and repositioned.
If that doesn't work, try downloading the demo of this product:
    http://irradiatedsoftware.com/sizeup/
It says that Adobe programs are "trouble" programs, that they probably won't resize, but they should at least move. If nothing else, maybe you can move the window to a negative y value (up) so that the resize handle is visible, then move it back down so the header bar is visible again...

  • Anamorphic export woes

I'm exporting my first anamorphic project.
Would someone be willing to walk me through the correct sequence and export settings?
I'm trying to export to Quicktime Conversion, h.264, size 480x270.  I have tried several sets of sequence settings, but they all come out horizontally stretched in export no matter what I do.  It's quite possible I didn't set up the sequence settings properly also.
The more I read about this, the bigger a headache I get - I know it will be necessary to go through this in more detail, which I will do next - but I need to get this file exported and would be grateful if someone would help me cut through the maze for now.
    Thanks in advance.

If it's letterboxed, it's not anamorphic.
Anamorphic means that the pixels are squished horizontally to fit widescreen content into a non-widescreen image format. Yours are not that. Your material is not squished, it's letterboxed.
I believe what you're trying to produce is a 16:9 aspect final output. The easiest way to do this is to export your timeline as a quicktime movie (not quicktime conversion), then load that quicktime movie into compressor, pick your preset - for instance H.264 800kbps - then go to the geometry pane and change the crop to a 16:9 cropping to remove the top and bottom black letterbox bars from your output. and set your sizing to an appropriate 16:9 size - say 640x360 etc...
That is if you're going to the web with this. If you're going to DVD and you want anamorphic, chose one of the DVD presets and alter your cropping as appropriate. Leave the sizing as 720x480, then when you load your clip into DVDSP, make sure you set the checkbox to let DVDSP know it's 16:9 material.

  • VST/Cubase integration

I currently edit in Audition CC (latest build) and use Cubase for time compression (called time stretch, it is far superior).  My workflow is record, edit, save in Audition, launch Cubase 5 import audio file - apply time stretch, save export, re-import into Audition.  I do this many times a day.  I have searched for years for a plug in version of the Cubase time stretch feature, to no avail.  I'm wondering if there is away to speed up my workflow in this area.  Can a "program," or "effect" from another software program be used as a plug in?  OR is there anther way?

I will not allow you to resolve a problem I've been having for 6+ year in less than 1/2 hour.  Hahahaahahaha!  I was very impressed with the second go round (Vocoder off).
Here are my original (metallic settings) and believe me, I've tried SO many - not recently but over the years...
then I changed to your latest configuration:
and it sounds as good as Cubase.  sped up 2 seconds which is pretty impressive.   tell me if I'm crazy...

  • Exported image is always stretched... source clips 1080p, sequence settings 720p.

So I'm trying to export a file from FC7 at 720p, but it always comes out stretched, no matter what resolution I have the export set to. The source clips are mostly 1080p, but I chose to edit 720p because my Mac was just too slow to be able to efficiently edit in 1080p.
    Sequence settings:
    Frame Size: 1280x720 (HD 720p)
Pixel Aspect Ration: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (720x480)
    Anamorphic: Off
The clip settings are mostly 1920x1080, however I'm also working with some still images that vary in resolution. In editing, all of the clips are zoomed in, as I'm trying to cut out some aspects of the image, and focus on specific details within the clip's frame.
In the canvas, the image looks just as it should be, but whenever I export, it is noticeably stretched. I feel like I've run out of options, and I'm thinking of re-editing the entire thing (it's not that long) in 1080p. My gut tells me that it has to do with the clip formats being different from the sequence settings, but I can't figure out anything else that I could try to get it to export properly.
I was hoping if anybody had any ideas, they could shoot them my way. I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately this did not work, but I feel like it should have when I observe the clip settings. Interestingly, when I set the sequence Pixel Aspect Ratio to square, the image on the canvas appears stretched in the same way that it does in all the exported files that I had previously created. The clip settings are as follows:
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    PAR: Square
    Compressor: H.264
    Frame rate: 59.94
Other images that I used are varying resolutions, but also have a square PAR. The sequence settings are as I mentioned in the opening post, but here are some added details that vary from the clip settings:
    Compressor: Apple Proress422
    Frame rate: 29.97
I tried changing all of the PAR of the clip settings to match the sequence settings, but this didn't work either. Honestly, I think I might just resort to working within 1080p where the sequence settings are changed to match the clip settings exactly, because I opened up a test sequence and it works just fine this way. I appreciate the help a lot though, thank you!

  • How do I export a Final Cut Express 4 movie using quick time conversion without stretching the image?

I have created a movie in Final Cut Express 4 using videos and still photos of various aspect ratios and resolutions.  Some of the photos are verticals.  When I try to use File>Export>Using Quick Time Conversion, my images end up being stretched horizontally when the video is finally processed.  I have tried preserving the aspect ratio but the video still ends up stretched horizontally.  What should my settings be in Quick time conversion?  I just want to make a video for YouTube.
    Thanks.  -Bob

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • Rate Stretch audio goes out of sync when exported.

Audio, which is rate stretched using the rate stretch tool to 100.01%, plays fine in Premiere Pro CS6. However, when exported to Encore or to MPEG-2 file, the audio is no longer stretched and becomes out of sync by the end of the video. When I play the preview in Encore, the audio is out of sync. Switch back to Premiere, it is OK. Export a MPEG-2 file and author a DVD, the audio is out of sync. Go back to Premiere, it is OK. I record the audio using a TASCAM portable recorder. I have recorded and synched audio many times and this is the first time that it does not work, on two separate Premiere projects. Any ideas on how to fix this. Even better, is there a way to record audio so that it matches the video (from a Panasonic HD AVCHD camcorder) without requiring rate stretch adjustment?

Try changing the speed with right click, Speed/Duration instead of using the Rate Stretch tool.

  • Exporting .mov file stretching out photos

I exported an h.264 mov file (from FCP06 sequence) of a wedding video that included still photos from the photographers and video from the video camera shot 4:3. The timeline looked fine but after using compressor to make the mov file, the photos appear stretched out. I guess this is a pixel thing. When I burn it to a DVD will it somehow fix itself? How should I import the photos into the timeline so that they will export at 4:3 looking correctly proportioned?

I am able to export one as a mpeg-4, but when I open the 2nd file, the export option is greyed out and I'm not able to export at all.
Not sure if you are outputting file directly from iPhoto or trying to convert an iPhoto shlideshow in QT at this point. If the former, then this would normally happen only when some other action is pending -- e.g., a modal box is already open. If the latter, then I have no idea and would likely need to see the source file causing problems.
The second file is larger than the first, but I'm not aware of any size restrictions. Are there?
Also don't believe current system has any such restrictions. Have personally worked with movies as long as 300 minutes and/or dozens of GBs in source length.
If not, what else should I be doing (I'm currently regenerating the 2nd .mov file to make sure that it wasn't corrupted, but it does play fine in Qtime).
Sounds like a good plan of action. If the same problem crops up, try creating a slide show using a sub-set of the photos. If problem continues and you are using a 2-stage (iPhoto to QT) process, try to post the sub-set to Internet so it can be evaluated.

  • 1280x720 .avi exports stretched Final Cut Pro

    Hi there:
I am working with files that were shot with a Nikon D5000. They are all .avi files, 1280x720. Once opened in Final cut, the program defaults them to fit in NTSC DV 720x480.
I have been struggling with the export for 4 days in a row now and no success...I have tried:
Exporting using Quicktime .mov using "current"
Exporting using Quicktime .mov using "custom" 1280x720 and 720x480
Exporting as mp4 file, using "current", "custom" 1280x720 and 720x480
I also changed the canvas to 1280x720 and the video image fits too small for the canvas.
Attached is an image that shows how it is stretching pretty much with any of the options that I have tried to switch.
I am using Quicktime 7.7 and Final Cut Pro 7.0. Macbook 10.5.8
I am running out of ideas and pulling my hairs out, anyone help please PLEASE ?

    I also did this test:
I exported the file to "Iphone (Cellular)" and the video looks perfect...(see image)
One more thing: The video clip has some JPEGS that are 1280x720, and I am not sure if that might also be affecting the video export...
    Hope you can help!

  • Source video stretched upon import and export

Hello: When I import video in iTunes directly from my videocam (640x480), it stretches the video when I export it. I would like to export it at 640x480 as well, but it stretches it. Is there a preference or something so that my video stays in it's original porportion? I would prefer to Share it as full quality so I can bring it into iDVD to make a DVD. Thanks for your answers.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm going to read your note to mean you are exporting from iMovie HD to a Full Quality movie, not exporting from iTunes or some other program. If I'm wrong about that, please say.
I suspect everything is just as it should be. When you export from a DV iMovie project, a Full Quality export is to a DV stream, which is always 720x480 (NTSC). That's perfect for iDVD; it expects that size.
You can export to other kinds of movies too using the Expert Settings export mode. Those would be exported as 640x480 -- or some other 4:3 aspect ratio -- but DV streams should be 720x480.
(Deep in its subconscious, a 720x480 DV stream thinks it's a 640x480 movie. It has to do with square vs. rectangular pixels. It's all very complicated and it makes your head hurt to think about it The reality is that your 720x480 movie will come out fine on the DVD. Let iDVD worry about it.)

  • Stretched export even when "Match Sequence Settings" is checked

I've been stumped by an export problem I've never faced before. I'm reediting the audio of the Rocky Horror Picture Show movie, so I began this project with a sequence based on the settings of the mp4 file of that movie. I edited it and exported it with "Match Sequence Settings" checked, but the final is horizontally stretched. Here are some screenshots.
    Sequence Settings
Export Settings (the source and output previews match!!)
    Original Movie
    New Export, Weirdly Stretched
Any thoughts? The sequence settings of my edit are based on the original movie, so I can't understand how the final output could be different. What am I missing?
Also this is in CC 2014.

    Hi Ttraversy,
It may have to do with non-square pixels, however, I'm not sure you should be editing with other people's source material. I highly recommend you avoid doing so to avoid legal problems.
    Thanks,
    Kevin
