Stretching a psd file on timeline

i can stretch any file on the timeline except a psd file. i can stretch them to a duration of infinity, but not a psd. can you tell me why and how i can remedy it?

A Photoshop document is not a clip or image file, it's a sequence. That's why you can't drag a new duration. You need to set the duration, as Nick said, before you import it. If you have to give it a new length, you'll have to double click the PSD sequence to open the nest and extend it there.

  • Double-click On PSD File And Timeline Disappears!?

Have dropped a .psd file on track V2 and want to resize it in Motion window.
So double-click it but timeline seems to vanish and a "negative" clip or something appears in the middle left of where timeline should be.
How do I make .psd behave like a normal clip and prevent the timeline from vanishing?
Incidentally the .psd has a coloured shape with a transparent background.

    Hi Ian,
The PSD opens in its own sequence in the timeline to let you change the values of the various layers that it might be composed of. If you make a PNG, it will not save the layers or let you edit their values in FCE.
If you want to change the motion values of the whole PSD file and not change them individually for the separate layers, select the PSD in your original timeline and click Enter to open it in the viewer.

  • Transparency Issues with PSD files in FCP 7

I'm having some weird file layer transparency issues with FCP 7. I'm working on a project that's made up entirely of graphics drawn in Photoshop CS5. They Photoshop settings were done to match an HDTV 1080i (16:9) sequence in FCP. In FCP, the pixels were set to square, field dominance to none, frame rate to 29.97 and compressor is Apple ProRes 422.
I exported my PSD files out of Photoshop, with each layer being exported to its own file. In general, things were fine, but there were a few files where you could see the outline of the character against the background, but mind you that this is only visible once the video is rendered out in the FCP timeline. Nothing is visible in Photoshop, nor is it visible while viewing from the Browser in FCP. I told this to the artist and he went back and made corrections, making sure everything was on a transparent background, but the result was still the same - once I rendered the graphics out in FCP, these edge lines were visible.
I then went back into Photoshop, opened all the files that were giving me trouble, clicked on the "foreground color" and changed it to a color other than white, then back to white and hit ok. That seemed to work - even when rendered out, I was getting no artifacts, until I tried enlarging the graphics over 100%.
Also, with some of the same graphics, I was trying to layer them so that a guy was in the foreground with other people and a van behind him in the background. Once again, no problem in Photoshop, but once brought into FCP, the background people were actually being displayed over the main foreground character.
I'm pretty baffled - what to do? I'll attach a photo of the weird lines around the characters. It might be hard to see at this size, but if you download and enlarge it to 300% or so, you'll see what I mean.

Just saw that Adam's original post was an older one.  Will keep this here anyway to maybe help the most recent poster.

Adam, did you try what David said about pointing to the root folder?  Did that work?
When I copy the SD card, I name a new folder on my hard drive something specific, like Smith Wedding.  Then I copy everything inside the SD card to that new folder.  The first level inside my new folder now has folders for
    AVF_INFO
    PRIVATE
and on down from there.  When you open Log and Transfer, point it to the Smith Wedding folder (of course whatever you have named yours).
ClipWrap2 also works great to convert the files beforehand if you want.
What camera are you using?  I have the Sony NX30 and it was giving me fits because the .mts files don't ingest if the clips are longer than 11 min. My problem is that I'm still on FCP 6.0.6.  I think 7.0.3 fixed that.  But I did find enough work-arounds to keep the camera.

  • Importing a .psd file - getting weird effects with drop shadows!! HELP!

    Hi all,
I'm trying to import a psd file as my site and then animate each page.
I have each page set up as a different layer and am importing each page as a movie clip so  i can animate each one separately.
The problem is that i have some images on each page that have drop shadows ( i have flattened these in photoshop so there is no longer the blending options layers attached). When flash imports all the layers it obviously has all of them visible at the same time initially.
When i then go through and separate each page to show at different points in the timeline, the images with drop shadows are now showing the image that was underneath it on import, instead of the drop shadow. Difficult to explain, but if you imagine a page with a square in the middle. That square has a drop shadow along two edges which is a slight shading. On a different page (on the layer underneath) there is just a big image of the sea (could be anything). When i import them, the page with the square is sitting directly on top of the page with the image of the sea. I separate these in the timeline so they show at different points, but when it's just the page with the square showing (the page with the sea isn't showing at this point), instead of the nice shading for the drop shadow, in it's place is the thin part of the image of the sea that was initially under the shading for the drop shadow....
Can anyone suggest what is happening and why, and how to quickly fix it in Flash. It took me AGES to import the whole site and all the pages, but now all the movieclips are completely useless because all the drop shadows are messed up with the images that were importing underneath them???!
I'm in a real rush here too, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • Using PSD files . . . HELP

I have a psd file with a transparent background. I have built it video template and pixel correction in photoshop. I need to know how to use it. I place it in the timeline. If i select it I then get a additional tab in the timeling for just that image. . I have figured out that I need to make duration changes in the tab. However, when I place it in the time line again (I need to use it several time) I can't change the duration of the second without changing the first usage, them both instances do not show in the viewer.
I have Tom Wolsky's FCE 2 book but can't find where it explains how to control a psd file. If some one could help me out it would be great. Even just directing me to the correct section of the book would help greatly.
    Thanks

If you need to manipulate the individual layers of the image in FCP, PSD will work fine. But if you don't, then use a TIFF file. Much more convenient to work with. Plus a TIFF file format will maintain it's layer editability in Photoshop and still show any applied layer effects in FCP without having to rasterize the layers.
For PSD, import the file, then double-click it in the Browser to load it into the Viewer. Set the duration (upper left hand TC window) prior to adding it to the Timeline.
Once it's in the Timeline, if you double-click it, it will open in it's own Sequence. To open it in the Viewer instead, right-click on the image and select "Open in Viewer."

  • CS6 to CC; PSD file not updating

Ran into a problem after upgrading from CS6 to CC.
I'm making an animatic for a stop-motion film.
A lot of the media I'm editing in Premiere is in the form of .psd files created in Ps and edited within a video timeline; they are recognized by Pr as video clips.
Before upgrading to CC if I changed the .psd file in Ps and saved it it would automatically update in Pr. No render from Ps necessary.
Now it doesn't, and says media pending, "link Media" is grayed out, and I can't replace the footage.
I like working between the two programs with .psd files but for now I will render out video clips to work with.
If anyone knows how to get back to my original workflow please let me know.
    Thanks,
    ~Scott

I found a quick solution in case someone stumbles upon this post with similar problems. I just deleted the old psd and re-imported the new one. Would have been nice to just re-link the psds so if anyone knows how to do that please post. Thanks.

  • Problem with ghosted lines in PSD files

    Hi,
When I import PSD files into a DVCPRO HD 720p timeline I see a faint gray box around titles. I'm saving out as 8 bit (because 16 bit won't work) over a transparent background. aspect ratio is fine and I turn off maximize compatibility to increase quality. Very strange.
    Chase

Yeah, I don’t think it’s the .psd file format… Try the .tiff Zeb suggested though.
BTW I’m not sure “Maximize Compatibility” has much, if anything, to do with quality. More to do with file size and, well, compatibility…
When saving a file with maximum compatibility, a full-size, full-resolution flattened version is saved along with the actual Photoshop (.psd) file. The flattened version ensures that other programs that can use the Photoshop format show the image properly.
Please post back if you find a solution. I'm curious...
EDIT Oh, could this be a render "thing"? And, are you viewing this on an external NTSC monitor?? It is an RGB file right???

  • PPro CS6, error reading *.psd files

My old NLE laptop is dying, so I built a new desktop earlier this year and loaded Production Premium CS6 on it as my second copy. Laptop is retired now, more or less, and the desktop is all I use. This installation went on without a hitch, took my serial number, I logged into my Adobe account, etc. The install was perfectly smooth. I copied all the old project files over from the laptop, but them in the same places (same drive letter, same directory names) on the desktop, opened up a project to be sure it would I got everything in the right place, everything looked good, everything seemed to work. Then for reasons that are irrelevant to this, I was unable to actually use the software for months.
Anyway, thinks get back to normal, and I went to edit an older project on the desktop. When the project opened, I got the red screen (media offline) from where I had Photoshop illustrations (stills) in the timeline. All other files opened. All the video, all the music, etc. But none of the Photoshop files.
I opened up my stills folder in the Project panel, and it's showing all the files, but with question marks where the little Photoshop graphic used to be in front of the file name.
I thought this was no biggie, just had to relink PPro to those files. So I left click on the film icon, select Link Media from the drop down, and point it to the correct file. Up pops a box that says "The importer reported a generic error." Yuck. Must be a corrupted file.
So I bring up Photoshop CS6, open the file, and it opens just fine. No error, no problem, no corruption, looks fine. So I made a small change, took it back out, and saved the file, thinking that a re-write of the file might help. But... no. No help, same error.
Hmmm... Created a brand new file from a random photograph. Saved it in the same format (psd). Tried to import that file using the media importer, trying to see if a different pathway through the software will help. Nothing doing. When I try to import through the Media Browser panel, I get the same popup box, giving me the same error message, for this brand new file.
So... What's up with this new instance of PPro CS6 not being able to import *.psd files from it's companion app Photoshop CS6? I did this for years with that old laptop, never had a hickup, and every time I made a change in Photoshop, PPro picked up the change like magic. Which is why we use the Adobe software, yes? So I'm thinking it should work the same way on this new desktop.
Just to test my sanity, I fired up the old laptop, did the same thing (new file, import into PPro project) and it worked just fine. So I'm thinking it's not PPro, but something about my new installation on this new desktop. But everything else works just like it should (only way, way faster).
    New PC information:
    Win8.1 64bit
    Intel i7-4770K processor
    16GB memory
C: drive is an SSD, Samsung 840 EVO, 250GB
    D: and E: are WD 1TB SATA 6GB/S 7200rpm drives
So... what have I done wrong? And how do I correct it?

One final thing. And this is just freaky to me. I can use PPro to create a Photoshop file, via "File...New...Photoshop file". Put this file I called "test_v1" in the same directory as the other *.psd files that I can't import. It shows up in the explorer. When I click on it in explorer, it brings up Photoshop, just like it should. What I get is an empty file with the title and action safe zone guides.
I cancel out of Photoshop without changing or re-writing the file. I try to import this file that PPro just created. I get the same "generic error" that PPro can't read the file.
So... anyone got a clue? I can't be the only person in the history of Adobe that's gotten this error.

  • Creating PSD file menu in photoshop...resolution is really bad!

I am creating a 16:9 menu in DVDspro 4 (PAL), I have created the flat PSD file in photoshop with elements from Illustrator that have been brought into Photoshop... at 72dpi RGB - PAL D1/DV Widescreen 720x576 preset.
Now the graphics look pretty pixelated and when I bring them into DVDSpro they are worse and stretched vertically cnat seem to get them to fit my Letterbox format or even look ok in the Simulator.
Now ive read in the DVDspro 4 Uses guide about square v Rectangular pixels,
but my graphics look so bad, can anyone help me? Should I be setting the resolution differently?

I do it like this (I know you can bring in layered Photoshop files into SP but this was the workflow i adopted when using sp 1.5 and it has always worked). This is for PAL work
For 4:3 screens I have a standard template at 768x576 which has the Action Safe and Title safe indicated on a switchable layer
    For 16:9 screens I have the same only at 1024 x 576
These are at 72dpi (though this is basically irrelevant it's terminology if you are from a print background you'll understand - it also makes the files nice and small)
I then create any elements in Photoshop that I need. IF I am bringing in any logos etc from Illustrator (which appears to be where you are having the problems) I open the Illustrator EPS in Photoshop but at 300dpi. I then drag that 300dpi image into the menu file (which means it will be huge...) and resize from there. This may be why I don't get problems with Illustrator logos.
From there I save out the completed logo as a PICT file and the overlay layer(s) for creating the simple highlights in SP as separate PICT.
Newer versions on SP handle the resizing of your widescreen or 4;3 menus to the appropriate 720x576 sizing (though I have found with motion menus at widescreen it is best to save out as a 720x576 m2v, but that's another story)
I suspwect the main problem you are having is that you are either cutting and pasting your Illustrator file (which is therefore immediately 72dpi) or you are opening the file at 72dpi. By adopting the method I use hopefully this will allleviate the problems
    Let me know

  • PSD file opens in viewer

Maybe simple...how do you get your PSD file to reveal layers in sequence and not in the viewer?

If your file is a layered PSD, it should appear in FCP's Browser as a sequence, and double-clicking it (in the Browser) should open that sequence in the Timeline.
(If you've placed the PSD into another sequence, double-clicking it in that sequence should open up the PSD as a sequence too)
But I sense neither is working for you?

  • PSD file import: always the same layers no matter what psd file

So, another problem has just popped up! Picture is, I imported a psd file into ae and made a cool vid out of it, which is all well and good. However, I decided to do a new one and as I imported the NEW psd file (as in COMPLETELY new, different file name with different drawings, different layer names etc) into ae... surprise surprise! The OLD psd file is displayed in the ae screen (???) It says it has imported my new psd file, but the layers and images displayed are from the old one (which, as I said, has nothing to do with the new one, except in matching canvas size).
    Thanks!

How did you import and what exactly are you viewing? The source view? The comp view? The timeline layer view? Did you use "File --> Replace Footage"? Naturally, unless you actually replaced the elements, the latter two will keep showing your original PSD as they are referenced by the original project. Otherwise the source view should correctly reflect your new document. That aside I seem to vaguely rember an issue with this in some older version of AE (something with AE misinterpreting paths for identically named layers in different files), but since you did not make any mention of your AE version nor platform, operating system or hardware, it will be impossible for anyone to be more specific....

  • PSD files into Premier Elements?

I have used Photohop Elements for years. I am familiar with it, do I need to resize a PSD file before taking it into Premier Elements to add to a video project?

    Lavona
What is the size of your scrapbook page in Photoshop Elements 12 - 12 inches by 12 inches document. If so, we need to know the pixel dimensions for the scrapbook page (width and height in pixels). Inches have no meaning in video. Does your plan include any possibilities for a 4:3 or 16:9 scrapbook page?
What is your intended export for your Timeline content - burn to disc (DVD-VIDEO standard or widescreen on DVD disc, AVCHD on DVD disc, or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc OR file saved to the computer hard drive in a video format?
Video is typically 4:3 or 16:9 in constrast to what you may have, that is, 12 inches x 12 inches at 300 pixels/inch which would be 3600 x 3600 pixels. And, one usually sets the project preset to match the properties of the source media. There is no project preset to match those dimensions.
Is your project going to consist of only these scrapbook pages? If so, the following should be noted.
All Premiere Elements projects have to have a project preset. The default for Premiere Elements 12 is NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 (1920 x 1080 pixels) or its PAL counterpart. If there is no project preset to match the properties of your source, then you could end up with your image with black borders. (The black borders could be filled in by placing a background on Video 1 and your scrapbook page of Video 2 directly above that background on Video 1. In that way, the background would show through the black (transparency) areas in the scrapbook).
    However...
There is a preference which lets you direct the program to import the source (your scrapbook page) and automatically scale it to the frame size of the project preset. This is the case that I described above. But the preferences can also be set to disable this option called "Default Scale to Frame Size". In your case, what you will see with this option disabled, is your image zoomed in the Edit area monitor. Then you can scale it down to fit the space provided for it in the Edit area monitor. This would cut off some of your page. You could decide what you wanted shown. And, if you scale to fit it all into the frame, black borders.
Now if the situation were that you had video sources and wanted to include your scrapbook pages in the presentation, then I would set the project preset to match the video properties and then fit the scrapbook pages to that project preset. Filling in some more details would allow me to fine tune.
But, back to your original question of sizing of those .psd scrapbook pages....which are probably 3600 x 3600. I suspect that the practical answer is going to be import them as is and let the program resize, allowing for black borders to be filled in my a background of some sorts. But, how many of those 3600 x 3600 pixels you can import without stressing out the project will depend on your computer resources and just how many of these scrapbook pages are to be used.
The above is my take on the details that you have described thus far.
Please review and consider and then let me know if you have questions or need clarification.
    Thanks.

Add On....For now, please ignore the mention of 1000 x 750 pixels 4:3 until we define your project to a great extent.

  • "the importer reported a generic error" on a psd file i have been using all day.

have been editing all day on a 3 minute video for a client, then all of a sudden, a PSD file with several layers for my graphics went off line... nothing else.. just the psd file.
tried to ReLink but all I get is this
"the importer reported a generic error"
I have tried resaving the project as something else and still it wont relink.

Resave psd file in Photoshop to another name and re-import.
Replace the psd on the timeline.
    See if that will work.

  • Transitions on psd files

My wife has Adobe Premier, and she can put transitions between her PSD stills with no problem. I have Final Cut, and I can't. Is there's a certain file I can use that will be transparency, and be the same quality as Photoshop files/ with layers, and will allow me to put transitions on them. In other words, what is a quality file, that has transparency, that will allow me to put a transition between stills?
    Can you help me?

The short answer is use PNG (which will not allow layers, but will allow transparency)
There is nothing special about PSDs that prevent you from using transitions. You always need handles in order to do transitions. The problem is that you don't have handles. FCP imports PSD files as sequences. When you initially import the PSD file, a sequence is created based on the length of your Still/Freeze Duration in the User Preferences/Editing panel. By default it is set to 10 seconds. Each layer in the PSD file is translated to a video track in FCP within that sequence. You then have the option to take only the layer(s) you want and copy them from the PSD timeline into your edited sequence or to nest the sequence into your edited sequence. If you nest the sequence, the length of the clip will be limited to the length of the sequence (by default 10 seconds) so if you try to put a transition at the end of the nested sequence, you won't have any handles. The solution is to open the PSD sequence and make all the layers much, much longer. (Be aware that if you have that PSD sequence cut in to your edited sequence already, you will probably ripple everything in that sequence to the right.) Then cut in only the length you need, and you'll have all the handles you could ask for, which will allow transitions.

  • Can't reconnect PSD files.

    Hi
My partner (Final cut Studio 2) send me a project file. We're collagorating on this project. I have FCE 4.5.
I was able to reconnect all the media but he also sent me some layered PSD files. I can see them in the finder, but when I try to reconnect them, I get an error msg "The file does not have enough video tracks to reconnect to stripe at time 00:00:00;00 in sequence "xxxx.psd. Click okay to make this item independent and go to the next clip or Cancel to skip all clips from this file"
I'm still learning this FCE. How can I reconnect these files fo my FCE sees them? All the video clips have been reconnected and rendered and play fine on my MBP except for these PSD files.
There's 3 sets of layered files in the sequence. Should I add more video tracks or shouldn't FCE put in what it needs?
    Allen

It's in the sequence and on the timeline but showing off line. Anyway Mike said if I re-imported them I'd loose the layers. There's 3 sections, 1st is all the layers, then each of the 2 graphics are seperated one at the begining and one at the end. they're title seq.
He said he'd show me what to do when we meet. See, we each have a copy of the video clips. He does his work in Studio 2 and saves his stuff to his raid. Sends me the project file to open in FCE. So I have to reconnect the files and tell MBP they're on my external LaCie. Everything went good except for those PSD files. All of the info was in the CFP project file plus he sent me the graphics seperately. this is a wierd deal for me!
Thanks anyway. I'll let you know what happens.
