Stripes on screen

Hi!My macbookair has started to show stripes in the right half of the screen while starting up. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? The stripes disappear as soon as the homescreen shows. This doesn't happen every time I'm starting. Weird.

hey LTP80,
do you have any devices near it such as a radio player, cellphone, etc that could cause an interference ?
use that unit at a different location and see if the stripes appear. i'm guessing something in the original location is causing the stripe to appear.
that is why when the service center looked into the issue, they didnt find any.

  • IMAC 2" wide white vertical stripe middle screen, what to do?

my older iMAC has 2" wide white vertical stripe middle screen, it started out as single red line, what to do?

I don't know if this will "fix" your problem but:
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Mac Pro - crashed and now won't start up, stripes on screen + kernel panic?

My computer apparently crashed while the screensaver was up (I was away for 10 or so mins, just Firefox and World of Warcraft in windowed mode running), as it was showing a black screen with a fuzzy whitish line along the top and was completely unresponsive. Unusual, but nothing to freak out about.. right?
So I did the on switch turn off/turn on routine and as soon as anything shows on the screen, I've got these black + white horizontal bars/stripes along the top 1/4 of my screen. The Apple Logo and the spinning progress bar have little fuzzy red spots on 'em. That's when it's time to freak out, as we're in "my computer done broke itself" territory. A few seconds of fuzzy progress bar and we get the wonderful "You need to restart your computer" message.
    Fine.. restart.. same thing.
Reset the PRAM and SMC. Same thing.
Can't start up from external disks.. it just gives the same stripes + message.
I'm running a detailed hardware test (the hardware test loads but with the same stripes at the top and annoying blue/red vertical ones in the background to boot), and it's been running for about 80 minutes and is only 60% of the way through.
Anything else I can do, or do I have to drag the heavy thing to an Apple store and leave it there for a month? How in the world does a computer go from "working fine" to "completely broken" in 10 minutes?

    More details:
The regular/non-extended Hardware Test returned no problems, despite taking hours for what was supposed to be a 3-5 minute test. I haven't dared run the extended.
I also tried removing third-party RAM and using the original configuration, then just the third-party and no Apple, etc.. It's not the RAM, as the problem is exactly the same.
I'm going to call up Apple support when I can, but just looking for other things I can check or possibly do until then, or just insight on what the problem could be.
Is it most likely the graphics card? Could it be an issue with the core hardware?

  • Flickering horizontal white stripes on screen

    Full Apple Hardware Test passed.
Power Management Unit PMU is reset.
White horizontal stripes covering the picture appear sporadically.
Sometimes entire screen gets white and returns to normal after a while.
Sometimes entire screen is covered with vertical gray scale stripes.
Stripe flickering is synchronized with hard disk or DVD-ROM drive sound.
    PowerBook G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   400MHz

Try finding someone who can look at it, thats what i did with my ipod and they fixed the screen and its good as new, may be you need a new screen even tough the screens not smashed or is it?

  • MacBook Pro only boots in safe mode with pink vertical stripes across screen.

So on Friday night I was using Chrome on my MacBook Pro, when all of a sudden little squares of light flashed randomly across the whole screen and everything but the mouse froze. I thought that was weird, so after a few minutes I forced my computer to shutdown. I waited a little and then turned it back on, and opened Chrome again. The same thing happened again, so I forced shut down, backed up Time Machine and ran a virus scan. Nothing came up, so I put it to sleep and and went to bed.  Then Saturday morning I went to open my laptop and it was off, which was weird, so I went to turn it on. After the apple logo and spinning gear went away, it booted to a light blue screen and stayed there. Again I waited and nothing happened, so I held the power button down until it turned off. I tried again but the same thing happened, so I booted in Safe Mode.
This time there were inch long vertical bars of horizontal lines, kind of confusing but here are two pictures I took of the screen that hopefully help. http://imgur.com/oj2WbZL and http://imgur.com/O1hwJ1B . When it finally loaded I had another issue, I had 6 pink vertical bars across the screen and a box of pink horizontal stripes around my pointer, http://imgur.com/BJBzu74 . I performed an extended Apple Hardware Test and after 17 minutes it found no issues, and as it performed the test the lines got whiter and made the screen harder to see http://imgur.com/XahBD3s .
I got my laptop June 2011, so it's not that old. I just want to know what this problem could be. I don't know if it's the connection from the screen to the computer, the hard drive, the logic board or something else. I'm really worried that it's something major, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

This is a GPU problem. It's normal that you see that the problem is random, but the fact that your Mac is only starting up in safe mode indicates that your Mac can only start up if the VGA driver is used. Moreover, if you open Console, you should start seeing "GPU Debug Info Start", which indicates a GPU failure.
As you have a backup, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the GPU is soldered onto the logic board, so the whole logic board has to be replaced, being a very expensive repair.

  • Satellite SP6000 - Crash with colored stripes on screen

    Hi!
I have a Satellite Pro 6000 and it worked good for more than two years. But in the last two months the laptop crashed from time to time with a distored screen out of flickering colored stripes. After that it takes some time to get it work again. XP Pro is fresh installed from the recovery CD's . Unfortunately it looks like a hardware problem. An external monitor shows the same distorted screen. I don't think that it gets too hot and the fan is working and blowing out warm air.
It is out of guarantee now and I don't want to spend much money on a repair task.
So, any suggestions for me? I don't fear opening and replacing/repairing some parts of it but it would be great to get some tips about a possible reason for this.
    Thanks in advance and bye,
    superberti

I'll give it a try. Although these two modules worked good for over two years.
Would be better than the motherboard ;-)

  • Restart request and green and gray stripes on screen, impossible to run

    Hi.
My MacBook does not start correctly. I immediately get the "you need to restart your computer message on a screen that is covered by green and grey stripes vertically. One issue I had recently is that I got close to the limit of the harddrive (1 GB space left).
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
1 GB is not enough free space--you are in danger of a crash and losing everything. Here is a link for doing that:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html
It sounds like you are experiencing a kernel panic. Here is an article that might be helpful:

Do you have a good up to date backup? If not, you need to make one before it is too late.
    Good luck!

  • Tab Strip Selection Screen in ALV Report

    Hi All,
I want to create a ALV report with TABStrip selection screen. How to proceede.
Is there any necessary to create dailog program for the screens.
    Please advise.
    Thank You,
    ANu.

    Hi
You can create it using module pool program in an easy way. Have the tab strip in main screen and use the sub-screens for display. By this way you can do it. If you wish, you could refer the following link, where they have given step by step procedure.
    <<Link-farm removed>>
    Hope this helps you.

  • Presario cq60 has stripes on screen when turned on

HI , I have a Presario CQ 60 with Vista.  Two days ago when I turned it on, the screen was whitish with stripes.  I turned it off and started it again a minute later, and it was fine.  This is happening almost every day. I can turn it off during the day and most of the time it starts up fine.  Any thoughts? It did seem to get hot quickly when first turned on; but not during the day.
    Thanks so much.

    HI,
Thanks for your answer; but I am not sure what you said or how do to it..
This is my main computer; and it works most of the time; exccept for the strripes.
What is a flaky video card and is that a big deal?
    Thank you.

  • White stripe on screen

There is a 1 1/4-inch wide white bar/strip/stripe running from top to bottom in the middle of the screen. Is there any way of fixing this?

This same thing happened to mine on June 17th. I took it in for repair and it needs a new LCD display. Total cost, $449. I was told the 4 year old computer isn't worth it. I'm searching these discussions to find out if I could by a used computer for the parts.

  • HELP!!! Blue/Yellow Strip on screen of 30gb video iPod

I've restored my ipod, started from scratch, installed older versions of itunes,.....but nothing seems to get that blue/yellow strip away.
The weird thing is it only appears on my videos...not on the main menu, photos, even podcasts don't have that strip. The strip is always in the same area of the screen, sometimes only segments of the strip appears and if something is moving in the video, it will flicker as well. Yet the main area is the strip and the colours of the strip fluctuate according to the colour of the video at the time (but it is always either blue and/or yellow)
It started happening (the blue/yellow strip) at the beginning of October. I had updated iTunes to 7.01 and iPod one morning and I remember I dropped my iPod from a height of abt 1m onto the carpet floor. I don't remember what happened first - dropping it or updating it - but that night, the strip was there and it hasn't gone since.
The strip and segments of the strip seem to appear intermittently but most times, it's there whenever i play a video. All my videos are converted using Videora and i tried Xilisoft as well, but the strip was still there.
Like I said before, I've restored it, uninstalled and installed everything but it's still there. An even weirder thing was that I installed iTunes 6.05 thinking it would eliminate the strip. While it did reduce it (segments of the strip popped up from time to time), whenever I connected my iPod to my computer, it would automatically reboot over and over. So I uninstalled it, restored my iPod and currently I have iTunes 7.02 and iPod 1.2. The blue/yellow strip is still there but it's not automatically rebooting anymore.
I'm no good at technology and so i've uploaded a few pictures to illustrate my point

    http://img436.imageshack.us/img436/7464/dsc01544ud4.jpg
I'm sorry for such a long post but this has been bothering me for a while now and I really want to know what I should do. I'm not sure if I damaged the harddisk when i dropped it but everything apart from my videos are fine. I'm really lost about what to do , so please help.
Your help is very much appreciated!
      Windows XP Pro

    Thank you for replying
sigh I was hoping it wouldn't be a harddisk problem but it definitely does seem like the only answer :S
An iPod repair company? Any recommendations? I'm not sure where to find one in Australia...would they fix it if I took it to the Apple shop? lol sorry...I didn't buy this iPod (my uncle got it in US) and I've never had any problems with it before...
    thank you ^_^

  • Vertical Blue Stripes across Screen

I'm not sure what triggered it, but vertical blue stripes will pop up and freeze my screen. It started last night and have happened a couple of times already. I can only 'unfreeze' it by rebooting the Mac.
    http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0185nu0.jpg
Does anyone know what the problem is?
    Thanks

I haven't read anything about the ABC website causing problems. Watching videos may be more processor intensive and the machine may run a bit hotter, which might be enough to trigger a video problem that could have been there all along, but just hadn't manifested itself yet.
If you also get the blue stripes on an external display, that would indicate a problem with the graphics chip. If the video on the external display is fine, then the blue stripes could be a problem with your internal display rather than the chip.
If you get the stripes again, it might be a good time to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test, which is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that originally came with your computer. The AHT will test a lot of stuff, and if you get an error code, it will indicate a specific hardware problem. You can try Googling the error code and maybe find out what it is, but Apple is the keeper of error codes and would have to be the one to give you a definitive answer.
I can appreciate that you need to work on your paper and won't be able to mess with this right away. If your video goes away entirely, here is an article which might help you get it back again:
Troubleshooting: My computer displays no video
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573?viewlocale=en_US
This article will walk you through some resets which might help.
Also, sometimes problems are worse if the computer gets hot. If that seems to be the case, something like a chill mat might help until you have time for some serious troubleshooting. So would quitting any unnecessary applications while you are working on your paper.
    Good luck!

  • Purple white stripes on screen display

IPAD screen has purple, white, and grey horizontal stripes.  Have already reset to factory settings and it won't go away.  Any suggestions?

  • Problem with black vertical strip on screen

I have a problem with a MB (oct2006): A black vertical band or strip is sitting on top of the screen keeping me from seeing about 20% of the screen. Along the left side of the strip there is a smaller strip that sometimes flickers. Also the wide black area sometimes turns to the color of the desktop. I would like to know if anybody have had this problem - am I looking at a software or hardware issue? And what can I do about it? Need help urgently!

    Hi Berit,
There are two ways to tell if the band is software related:
1.) Hook up an external display to the machine, does the problem exist on that screen as well?
2.) When you first start up the computer, at the gray screen, does the band exist?
It more than likely is a hardware/display issue and will need to be serviced by an Authorized Service Center. Do you have an Apple Store near you? I'd recommend having someone trained to identify problems like this take a look at it and advise you on what happened, how it can be fixed, what it might cost, etc.
