Stripping/silhouette/masking/transparency etc.

Hello,
I'm doing a photo shoot on white with the intention to give the client silos. I know basic masking, but I've never had to delivered stripped images before. To make matters difficult, many of the objects will be neutral colored jewelry against white, selective focus, with a soft shadow included. In other words, low contrast, neutral colored edges against white.
1. Is there a recommended technique or plug in for this brand of challenge?
2. Which format is the best way to deliver the final product to the client? Should they get a flat TIFF with a transparent background? (I never liked the look of that checkerboard background myself.) Or should I give them a white background and convert my mask to a clipping path?
Any and all advice is most appreciated.
Intel Mac OS 10.5.4, CS3

I think a tool which might be of great value (which I seem to pitch a great deal) is Peel Off White. I'm imagining that you want your objects with shadow to be available for placement on other images or backgrounds without any fringing or strange artifacts. I also imagine you want the soft shadow to be placed with the object image. To do that I'd create a hard selection of the object photographed, inverse it and run Peel off White (on a floating layer not the Background). Then I'd take a look at the result on a couple of other backgrounds to see how it looked. Depending how pure your white background might be to start with, you might select the object contract the selection by a pixel or three and run POW to make 'anti-aliased' edges. Anyway, here's Peel Off White...

Oh and you'd send the file as a TIF.

  • How to use the same mask, stencil, etc., for multiple layers? Photoshop equivalent of masked group?

Hi I spent more than half an hour to search manual, forums, and Internet and still can't find the answer. Please help!
For example, in a comp with 5 or more layers I want to use the same mask or stencil or what ever can hide areas of the layers 2,3, and 4 but layer 5 and any other eventual layers below should not be affected.

Pre-compose the layers you want to mask and apply a track matte to the pre-comp using the mask. Think of pre-composing as an equivalent of creating a layer group.
Use Set Matte effect on each of the layers you want to mask. This is easiest to do if you apply set matte once and then create an animation preset to apply to the other layers. Just get set matte to do what you want it to do on the first layer, Select Set matte in the ECW or in the Timeline, then go to Animation>Save animation preset. Then select all of the other layers you want to apply the set matte to and apply the preset.
Put the mask at the bottom of the layers you want to mask and enable the preserve transparency switch, then nest this group in the composition with the other layers.
Here's another tip. You could define a custom color for all of the layers you want to use the matt on, then use the custom color for a group selection. This may make things easier down the line.

  • Layer Mask Transparency not White

When I go to make a selection in Photoshop CS6 and then click on layer mask from the background layer, the inverse selection is trasparent, rahter than white. How do I change this? Thank you!

Sorry for not describing it in better detail. Here is another example. When I go to crop image and expand my canvas beyond the borders and click ok, the background should be white, instead it is transparent.
When I try to convert a selection from my background image into a layer mask by selecting and then clicking on the mask icon, my background is transparent rather than white. I have cleared all my settings and am totally stumped on what I should do. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Exporting a masked transparent  FLV from PSD

A few days ago, i exported a quicktime Animation from
photoshop which had a mask around an object so that the outside of
the object was masked and transparent. encoded to FLV and imported
to Flash and it worked fine. There was something about it I decided
to change the next day, but I haven't been able to repeat the
process and get the transparency in the video.
I am placing it on the stage over a background image fro a
    website.
Please help, it is driving me nuts.

I tried importing the whole PSD document instead of the
animation export and it seems to do the trick.
making video from layers in import, now if I can get the
animation to loop, I'd be in heaven.

  • Quick question about hue / saturation / transparency etc

I'm basically doing a simple photography website for a friend, and an trying out a few mouseover effects for the thumbnails.
Initially I tried reducing the transparency, and now the brightness, but neither seem, quite right.
Looking around online for what works well, I stumbled across Peter Lik's website.
    If you look here :
    http://www.peterlik.com
And click on Collections to bring up a thumbnail gallery, can anyone with an eye for these things advise me as to what changes in hue / saturation / contrast etc look like they'd create the dulled thumbnail image compared with the brighter one when you mouse over.
    Many thanks.

    Thank you!
I originally just did the thumbs as a 60% opacity, but it was a default white background. I hadn't finished off a full gallery, so was showing the guy the Peter Lik page as an example of the effect. Looking at them together, we reckoned the Peter Lik one was more effective, as the reduced opacity on the white background was a bit washed out looking.
So then I was trying different combinations of the brightness, which needed countering with the contrast, and I couldn't quite seem to get it.
But you've hit the mail on the head - reducing the opacity on a black background is the winner!
Many thanks for prepping that example PNG - much appreciated.

    Hi Fincal Cutters,
I'm working on a film that has some scenes based on 18th century China. In my filming locations, there were times where I found small items that I want to delete or mask from the background. I'm running Final Cut Express v3.5. Has anyone done this? How? Please recommend things you know work.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
If your objet do not move, use this trick:
You can make a freeze frame of your clip (showing unwanted objects).
Open it in Photoshop and erase the offended object with clone tool (or others).
Import your PS file in FCE.
Put it over your clip, and use crop tool to adjust the image just to keep your "corrected" part. Using a mask can help too.

  • Photoshop vs Illustrator...keeping it vector

    Hi all,
I use photoshop ALL the time and love every feature. However, I've been forcing myself to use Illustrator (love it, but find it's limited compared to photoshop for many projects I do). I'm hoping you all can help with two questions that I have.....
Question 1: I've often heard people starting a project in illustrator then "bringing it in to photoshop" to do other effects....this might seem like a dumb question, but won't that rasterize the work you did in illustrator? And if that's the case, why not start and end the project in photoshop?
Question 2: I started a project in illustrator that involved a lot of pathfinder work and gradient mesh. I'm sure I could have airbrushed in photoshop to get a similar technique but like i said, I want to stick and learn illustrator than always depending on photoshop. I'm currently at a impasse because now I want to use certain parts of a jpg image to mask into the objects i created in illustrator (see link below for example of my objects in question) at lower opacities (in PS I would create a layer with the image i want to use,  make a layer mask, lower the layer opacity and soften the hard edges and around the areas I don't want). I tried the clipping mask in Illustrator and it SORTA does the job but not quite.
What i create in Illustrator is very similar to this:
    http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/illustration/design-wedding-rings-using-adobe-illustr ator/
What i want to do now is to clip certain parts of other photo images into these rings to make them look part of the ring (in photoshop i would use masking, warping, opacity, layer blending etc). When I created the mask in illustrator, it sorta worked but there's hard edges from the image i made the clipping mask from that i would like to smooth out....among other issues i would normal not encounter in photoshop.
Should I just take it into photoshop and finish it off or is there a way to get my end result in illustrator? And if the answer is to take it into photoshop, then my first question comes into play. I hope this makes sense
any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I've often heard people starting a project in illustrator then "bringing it in to photoshop" to do other effects....won't that rasterize the work you did in illustrator?
    Yes, it will.
And if that's the case, why not start and end the project in photoshop?
First, because just as there is a multitude of things you can do by editing raster images, there is a multitude of things you can do in vector-based drawing that you can't do in raster imaging.
Second, the resolution independence of vector graphics is not a matter of whether your work will be rasterized; it's a matter of when. Everything eventually gets rasterized. When you print vector graphics, they are rasterized by the printer. When you display vector graphics on a monitor, they are rasterized by the monitor. In fact, even while you are editing vector paths, you are viewing what you are doing as a raster image on your screen.
Third, raster imaging is lossy by nature; not just in terms of resolution but also in terms of color conversion and color correction. So it's quite common to create a vector-based graphic and keep it as a master which you then rasterize and/or enhance with effects for specific final uses. In other words, it's quite common to create and keep a vector-based file to maintain lossless editability and then "nail it down" to specific rasterization settings optimized for a particular use.
When I created the mask in illustrator, it sorta worked but there's hard edges...
Crisp, sharp edges  are naturally germane to vector graphics, just as detailed, noisy texture is germane to raster imaging. That's why both exist. When it comes down to it, vector graphics are mathematically-described shapes; therefore, by nature, sharp edged. When Photoshop needs scale-independent sharp edges, what does it do? It resorts to vector-based paths. Inversely, when Illustrator needs soft fuzzy drop shadows and blurs, or highly-textured fills, what does it do? It resorts to raster imaging.
You can do the things you describe in Illustrator. It has features for raster-based masks, transparency, etc., as do other vector drawing programs. Just as with raster imaging, some programs are better at specific things than others in the same category. Xara Designer Pro, for example, is another vector drawing program, but it does live raster-based feathering far better than does Illustrator.
Many things which appear to be raster-based (reflections, transparency, realistic grads, glows) can, in fact, be rendered entirely with vector-based drawing and thereby retain true resolution independence. For example, you mention mesh grads; an entirely vector-based construct. Soft drop shadows were built entirely from vector-based blends long before raster-based effects appeared in programs like Illustrator.
This is a detail taken from an entirely scaleable vector-based drawing. Some of the object-level feathering and noise texture is raster-based, but mathematically rendered on-the-fly; and therefore scaleable when needed for different output purposes:

  • Applying a gradient mask to type to create a reflection

I working with CS4 Windows and am applying a gradient mask to unrasterized type to create a reflection. I've flipped the type, chose gradient tool, have chosen foreground to background, foreground to transparent, etc. The mask layer keeps acting like a "normal" layer and instead of masking out the part I want masked, it darkens that portion. I've even verified my method with tutorials and come up the same problem. I figure there's something I have either checked or unchecked but I can't figure out what. If I use another tool to mask part of the type it works fine. I'm really baffled.

You either want a proper layer mask, or to create a clipping mask. You might try posting a screenshot of your layers panel if you're still stumped.

    Andrew Maola

    Hi.
Thank you for explaining the theory about rendering in Muse but something doesn't work.
I'm running on Win7 - CC2014.2. on 2 different computers. Efe Of course the transparency displays correctly when I preview my page in the browsers (All browsers - also IE11).
Also in preview mode svg is very good but in design mode
In order to render the SVG at design time, Muse hands the SVG to Safari on the Mac and Internet Explorer on Windows and asks it for a bitmap. This bitmap is only used at design time and when viewing the site in a browser that does not support SVG. Unfortunately, the bitmap returned by Internet Explorer strips out partial transparency. Fully transparent pixels should be preserved at design time and all transparency should be preserved when you actually view your site in the browser.
We have not seen or heard of differences in the handling of transparent pixels between copy/pasting and save/import. Hence, I'm wondering if the copy/paste issue is only with partially transparent pixels and if the case that succeeds in a save/import workflow is for fully transparent pixels. To be clear, this transparency issue should only be during design time on Windows. There shouldn't be any issues on the Mac or in the browser.
