Stripping the docs

Stripping the docs in order to have a light system seems to me like going on a morning run and expecting to run faster by omitting to take a handkerchief in your back pocket.
Sneeze, and you're the loneliest person in the world.
Just to say that I had to make a quick check in /usr/src/linux/DOCUMENTATION to setup my Intel High Definition soundcard, and... the docs weren't there. So I'm currently waiting for the whole shitload of linux-2.6.24.tar.bz2 to download from kernel.org on my 512 kbps DSL connection, just to check one line in the docs.
</rant>
Apart from that, I'm quite happy with Arch.

Because it's annoying for a lot of people. If it is a so often raised topic, maybe it's worth to reconsider the decision. Maybe I'm exaggerating here, but I think the absence of proper docs is the main Arch show stopper for many people.
I'd like to see the packages split into "package" and "package-doc", for example, so I could spare disk and bandwith as usual but if I realize I need to read an info page I'd install the docs and voila.
It would be trivial to implement, just a line or two in the build scripts to tar the docs instead of throwing them away. No extra work for the package maintainers. Am I wrong?
No, you are not 'wrong', but it is not a question of right or wrong.
You and Brebs are making your points in a frank and forthright manner, but the the devs have stated that they will not be providing these docs in the foreseeable time frame. If the community would like to change this, Aaron has even agreed to rsync the repos to the documented packages, but the key factor is that this will have to be a community effort.
If the community wants it, the community will have to provide a solution at this point. This is far from impossible.
The AUR, including the [community] repo is completely community-maintained. KDEmod, as was pointed out is 100% community developed. Yaourt, shaman, and pacman-contrib among others are all some of the strongest aspects of Arch.
Let's be pragmatic, proactive  and as solution-oriented as possible. Either:
A) provide the docs in a repo or
B) Ask for the devs to stop stripping docs in a feature request on flyspray- maybe they will agree to simply stop stripping them and the docs will start to appear over time.
If the answer to B) is "no" then see A).

  • Stripped down docs? I think infos are handy

    Yes yes i know arch is a minimalist no-newbie distro, and that's why i
    like it! i by no mean think i'm a linux expert, nor a newbie, though,
    and how did i learn (and keep learning) what i know? reading docs
    of course! i think that info and doc sections are in many cases great
    learning tools, and it'd be easier to rm them if someone does't like
    'em rather than being forced to find 'em on net when needed. would be the
    packages so much larger? i think that the time i save when
    downloading a pac w/out info pages i'll spend later searching infos on
    gnu web site. and when on modem connection this is quite
    frustrating. so in the end i suggest that if packages are to be kept
    stripped down, the relative infos and docs could be made available
    easily on arch site, so one can download them (maybe a pacman option
    could be handy?). i end with a sample from tar manpage: "The  GNU
    folks, in general, abhor man pages, and create info documents instead.
    The maintainer of tar falls into  this  category.   This  man page  is
    neither complete, nor current, and was included in the Debian Linux
    packaging of tar entirely to reduce the frequency with which  the lack
    of  a man page gets reported as a bug in our defect tracking system.
    If you really want to understand tar, then you should run info and
    read the tar info pages, or use the info mode in emacs."
    BTW: Arch is great!

    Dusty wrote:I personally don't think you should blame them. Writing documentation is not fun, and I assume nobody's getting paid to do it.  I'm trying to document some of my problems and solutions as I get Arch set up; that's the best I can personally do for the project.
    why can't i ? i put in many many many long hours in when i was maintaining packages and that is just as thankless a job.
    not to mention i have put in lots of time at this forum and answered or seen answered repeated question. this is every forum regular's bain and is easily solve with current docs.
    if i could spend 8 hours or more a day seven days a week then it is not much to ask a doc developers to at least long in for an hour on the forum and whip together a few faqs.
    because they are not getting paid means nothing to me. they voluteered for the job and if they felt that they could not do it then they should resign and giv ethe job to someone like that is eager to contribute.
    and by no means come back after an absence of months and intentionally try and aggrivate someone working hard to expand the horizons of arch. nope i am sorry but the doc developers are as useless as tits on a bull.
    You let people govern which distro you choose?
    yes i see arch straying away from some of the things that were impressed upon me that would not change. my policies did not change and my approach did not change. so when you are not longer comfortable in what you do and use whether it is your doing or others whyu continue?
    I haven't heard of crux... I'm going to look it up right now. I can't imagine anything better than Arch, but it's always good to search.
    Edit:  Crux looks more "beta" than Arch to me, from their site, but that's just a quick impression.
    why because it has a very simple web page? because it does not have dependency solving?
    crux is as actively developed as arch and their developers are all active in the community. they have a more vibrant community in many ways. and they are keeping their k.i.s.s. philosophy.

  • How do you allow multiple users share a common folder that is on the doc?

    I'm coming from many years as an OS 8.6 user. My family expects me to wade though all of the documentation and figure out how to make using the computer easy. One feature they liked was the way I set up the Apple Menu so that only the programs were listed. The categories were Applications, Diversions, Internet, and Utilities. This masked all of the other stuff that may have been associated with a program from them.
    I would like to do the same in OS X (10.4.7). So, in /users/shared I created a folder named of all things "Apple Menu". In this folder I've created new folders for Applications, Diversions, Internet, and Utilities. Into these folders I placed aliases to the various programs. I then took this folder and dragged it to the Doc. On my Doc, with I control click the "Apple Menu" folder, I see my folder names with drop downs listing all of the aliases just like in OS 8.6. Unfortunately, on the other user accounts after dragging the folder /users/shared/apple menu to the Doc, they can only see aliases to files that came with the system. They can not see any of the new files that I've added. How do I set this up so that I maintain one folder of the aliases to various programs and yet every account can see all of these aliases?
    I don't want the Doc cluttered with applications that are not used all of the time. At the same time I don't want to have to navigate to some sub-directory and scan a list of files looking for the application everytime I want to run it. The rest of my family members would go nuts. As a matter of fact, I think I would also. I liked the Apple Menu in OS 8.6. I think this Doc folder thing might just work, if I can get past this security/permissions issue.
    Thanks for the advice.
    Joe
    17" iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   various Mac running OS 8.6

    Thanks for the suggestions offered so far, but they don't get to the root of the issue. I only want to maintain one, and only one, "Apple Menu" folder. I'm not looking to restrict user access. I'm trying to streamline user access for those who are not comfortable navigating down 2 or 3 or more levels of directories looking for the "applications". As Administrator I do this at the time an application is installed and place an alias to the application in the appropriate "Apple Menu" folder so that my family members can quickly and easily access it.
    I built the "Apple Menu" folder and placed it in /user/shared. I also built all of the aliases to the applications and placed them in the appropriate sub folder of "Apple Menu". I've chosen, "Applications", "Diversions", "Internet", and "Utilities" as the sub folders.
    Some of the aliases, while logged into a non-administrator account do not show up in the "Apple Menu" while others do. For example TextEdit appears while TextWrangler, which I installed does not. I thought that only programs that I installed are not showing up, but this is not true. I installed Reunion and this program is visible from the non-administrator accounts. Yet I can navigate to the item not appearing in the "Apple Menu" and launch it.
    The top folder's owner is myself, the group is "wheel" and it has read permission, and everyone has read permission. I've made myself and the other users members of the group wheel. And I've propogated these values down the folder hierarchy starting at "Apple Menu". I would like to know why this isn't working?
    Though Classic Apple Menu and XMenu sound like good alternatives in each case I would be responsible for setting these applications up in each environment. I only want to do this set up once as administrator and know that all of system's users have access to this information from the Dock.
    Is there some kind of installation step missing that is not permitting these aliases from being seen by all of the system's users?
    Again, thanks for the advice,
    Joe

All icons in the format bar at the top cannot be clicked (font, font size etc). I will have to open a text box in order to type it.
    If i open an existing PAGES doc, duplicate and rename it, then i delete all existing text that i have written, only then i can type in at the doc.

    I cannot send a Pages document, Word via email if the doc contains a picture.  If I email a Pages doc without a pic in Word format or pdf with a pic it with go through to sender?  Not sure why Pages won't send Word doc with a picture in it.  I check the security on the email recipient and the email doesn't get blocked or throw in the junk box?
    thanks,

    If you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, Save As… has returned to the File menu when you hold down the Option/alt key. But you don't really "save" as other file types, you translate & export as Word or RTF or text or PDF & that is easily done by going to File > Export or Share > Export.
    Also, please do us all a favor & don't use all capitals in your posts, either the body of the post or the title. All caps is the internet equivalent of shouting & is very hard to read.

  • How can I get the Doc object from any other object?

    Dear colleagues,
    in FrameScript it is dead-simple to get to the document part of any object, just add .Doc to the variable.
    How can I achieve the same with ExtendScript? I amtired of passing the document object next to AFrames or Pgfs along into subroutines, because those objects already contain the information about their document. But how do I access this?
    Thanks for pointers,
    - Michael
    PS: Almost the same is true for the page an object lives on. With FrameScript we use .Page, with ExtendScript you have to move up the object tree until you reach the UnanchoredFrame.PageFramePage…
    PPS: It would be great to see some convenience properties like .Doc and .Page implemented natively.

    I'll preface this response by admitting this far from an elegant solution, but I did write a function addressing this question, mostly as an exercise.
    If passed an object with an InTextFrame property (Pgf, AFrame, Cell, Fn) that resides in an open document, the function will return the Doc object. Otherwise, it returns undefined.
    function getParentDoc(testObj) {
        //Get object for current page
        try { var curPage = testObj.InTextFrame.FrameParent.PageFramePage; }
        catch(er) {return;}
        //Step backwards to first page in document
        var prevPage = curPage.PagePrev;
        while (prevPage.ObjectValid())
            curPage = prevPage;
            prevPage = prevPage.PagePrev;
        //Compare with first pages of open documents
        var testDoc = app.FirstOpenDoc;
        while (testDoc.ObjectValid())
            if (curPage.id==testDoc.FirstBodyPageInDoc.id) return testDoc;
            testDoc = testDoc.NextOpenDocInSession;
        return;
    To your PPS: Rather than seeing the native framework grow bloated to address additional features, I would love to see Adobe and other developers publish libraries of useful functions and class extensions.

  • Lost document on my new MAC because I accidentally saved on another account that I had no permission to save to..now I don't know where the doc is but I just know its somewhere on the computer..maybe the temp files or something?!sos! please help me!!

    I saved a document, while logged in as a Guest, to another user account [it was set up for some reason to save like that (I guess the person who used computer last did that) and I didn't check before "saving"] on accident. Of course I didn't have permission to save on the other user's account but I was in a rush and so I figured everything was fine but later I found that there was a message warning me saying it did not save because it couldn't save because I had no permission to save on that account and gave me the option to duplicate or cancel.. I wasn't paying attention so I can't remember which button I hit but clearly it wasn't "duplicate"
    I took hours perfecting this document and now I can't find it.. anywhere!
    Where do these types of things go when this happens.. I know it's somewhere on the computer but where?? SOS I need the doc and I'm hoping I can find it
    I guess it's the same as someone who accidnetly hits "don't save"... question still stands.. please anyone help me!!!
    I'm trying to use Disk Drill but I only found things from November and it seems like it only shows files that have been physically/manually deleted..and my TIME MACHINE WAS NOT SET UP..because we recently got this MAC computer and had no clue what it was
    maybe its in some temp files somewhere..where do not saved documents go.. i know that it is probably writable but I know that is probably still exists
    ANYONE WITH INFO PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

    tis true
    I know, I always do that but I was in a rush to get somewhere and I was relying on my thousand dollar Mac to do some kind of recovery or something. I know Microsoft always keeps temporary files (I think Mac does too, part of me asking here in this forum was for someone to tell me where I can find those files) and when you go to open Office Works then it gives you the option of opening the last recent documents, saved or not saved.
    I usually copy paste into my emial just in case something goes wrong with the created document but I just didn't have the time to login and do all that My loss, you live and you learn, BUT still if ANYONE got any info on this, PLEASE DO CHIME IN *keeping the hope alive*

  • ColdFusion 11: allowedextforinclude functionality has changed. But the docs haven't been

    G'day:
    I am reposting this from my blog ("ColdFusion 11: allowedextforinclude functionality has changed. But the docs haven't been") at the suggestion of Adobe support:
    @dacCfml@ColdFusionCan you post your queries athttp://t.co/8UF4uCajTCfor all cfclient and mobile queries.— Anit Kumar Panda (@anitkumar85)April 29, 2014
    This particular question is not regarding <cfclient>, hence posting it on the regular forum, not on the mobile-specific one as Anit suggested. I have edited this in places to remove language that will be deemed inappropriate by the censors here. Changes I have made are in [square brackets]. The forums software here has broken some of the styling, but so be it.
    G'day:
    Remember this one: "ColdFusion 11: preventing files from being included? [WTH], Adobe?". I can confirm this verymoderatelyslightly contentious feature has been changed in ColdFusion 11, but the docs have not been updated to reflect the change.
    The issue is summarised thus (from the article linked-to above):
    [...]out of the box ColdFusion 11 will only allow the inclusion of CFML and HTML files. Why? They cite "for security reasons". Here's a quote (posted in the bugtracker, originally from the pre-release forums):
    "Vamseekrishna Manneboina: Yes, this was done as part of a security measure. You can now only include CFM/CFML files by default. You can specify additional extensions via a property called allowedextforinclude in neo-runtime.xml. By default, HTM and HTML file extensions are already added to this list/property, thereby allowing for inclusion of HTM and HTML files too by default."
    OK, I disagree there's merit in this, some others agree, others disagree. But... so be it. I actually thought - if I was in a charitable mood - that the people that were "for" this change made a reasonable case for its inclusion, so - whilst not agreeing with them - I was content to just shrug and go "yeah, oh well".
    Now this feature is still in the docs: "New in ColdFusion 11 - Restrictions", but this is not the way it now works. Initially I thought it had been removed completely (and I am now in the midst of retooling this article from saying that... as I only worked out what was going on 2/3rds of the way through writing it).
    I did a secure install the other day, and one of the first things I tested was this:
    <!---test.cfm---> <cfset message = "before"> <cfoutput> #message#<br> <cfinclude template="code.inc"> <cfset message = "after"> #message#<br> </cfoutput>
    <!--- code.inc ---> <cfset message="within"> <cfoutput> #message#<br> </cfoutput>
    And this all runs fine, as one would expect:
    before
    within
    after
    Next I checked neo-runtime.xml to see if the settings had been augmented to switch this off by default: but I'm buggered if I can see any reference to it anywhere.
    So I then checked ColdFusion Administrator to see if there was any hint of it there, as this was one of the things Adobe said they were going to do in their solution to this. And there it is:
    So by default now, anything is allowed. I figured I must have missed the setting in neo-runtime.xml, so changed the setting to "FOOBAR" so I could easily spot it, and there it is down @ /wddxPacket/data/array/*[16]/var[@name="compileextforinclude"] in neo-runtime.xml:
    <var name="compileextforinclude">    <string>FOOBAR</string> </var>
    And - having changed it back to something sensible: CFM, then the feature now "works":
    before
    #message#
    after
    However this is probably a worse security hole than the one they were trying to fix! It looks OK when looking at the render in the browser, but look at the actual raw mark-up:
    before<br> <cfset message="within"> <cfoutput> #message#<br> </cfoutput> after<br>
    We have unparsed CFML source code sent to the browser. This is awful. What if someone switches this on, and doesn't spot one of their old includes which has less-than-trivial CFML in it? It's now publicly accessible. Adobe have created a feature which has the possibility to leak source code to the outside world. How is that a security feature?
    Also interesting is that with the super-secure profile installed, this is still off by default? I would have thought it'd be on in this case?
    I still don't think this feature has been implemented properly, and it all still points even more to the fact the Adobe ColdFusion bods don't really know what they're doing.
    Anyway, I'll nudge Adobe to at least get the docs sorted out.
    Time for work (3min ago)...
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
    Regarding "What if someone switches this on, and doesn't spot one of their old includes which has less-than-trivial CFML in it?", yeah I agree that'd be a problem.  Hmm, maybe both this.allowedextforinclude *and* this.compileextforinclude should've been supported (instead of replacing the former w/ the latter as was done)?  Example:
    this.compileextforinclude="cfm,cfml,inc";
    this.allowedextforinclude="cfm,cfml,inc,txt";
    That way an exception could be thrown if cf|included file's extension wasn't in the this.allowedextforinclude list.
    Perhaps the above could be shortened to:
    this.compileextforinclude="cfm,cfml,inc";
    this.allowedextforinclude="txt";//implicitly includes * from this.compileextforinclude (since -compile- implies -allowed-)
    Dunno if that'd be confusing.
    Anyhow, just some thoughts..
    Thanks!,
    -Aaron

    Hi need help running 10.3.9 panther i cant get safari to open off the doc. up next to the blu apple on the header bar it says safari so something is happening but the program wont open all hte way. If i try to open directly by opening the hard drive icon then finding safari in the applications folder and double clicking i get the same results. thanks djcappy1

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Sounds like there is file corruption.
    Here are a few suggestions: (each one requires moving a file or folder to the desktop and restarting Safari. If no resolution, move the item back to its original location and try the next suggestion.)
    These items are found in your User Library:
    Preferences folder - .com.apple.safari.plist - this is the Safari preferences file. If Safari becomes functional, then you'll need to reset any customized settings once the program opens.
    Safari Folder - holds your bookmarks, download, history and icons (favicons). Move the entire folder to the desktop. If the program opens, then one of these files is corrupt. On the restart, Safari automatically creates a new folder. So, if Safari works, then move one at a time (restart Safari each time) the various items in this folder into the newly created Safari folder. If Safari crashes you've found your corrupted file.
    If none of the above works, then try Safari from another User Account (you may have to create one in System Preferences). If Safari doesn't work there then your problem is system-wide.
    Post back with results.

    It appears if you write the document with newer version Pages and try to open it older version Pages.

    You can each have your own ID for your own iTunes accounts, but in order for a device to stream via AirPlay to the same Apple TV, everything must use the same homesharing ID. This is not the same as your iTunes account ID (although it can be for one of the devices)
