Strobing screen and/or frozen system
Hello All,
I have a 17" MacBook Pro that's about 4 years old. About 6 weeks ago the screen started acting like a strobe light usually the whole system locks up. Occasionally the screen will lock up without the strobe, but that is much less often. Doing a safe boot will clear the problem but it seems to be happening more and more frequently. When it's not strobing everything works perfectly. Here are the things that I've done to try and fix it.
Reseated the RAM
Reset pram
Apple geniuses reinstalled leopard
Apple geniuses did a test to see if the NVIDIA chip had failed
Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Elena
Here are the error reports from two failures.

when i use my iphone 4, my iphone get a brown screen and is frozen. Who can help me?
If the iPhone is new and you take it apart, kiss the warranty goodbye.
Are you using a case that may be blocking or partially blocking the iPhone's proximity sensor? If you are using a case, remove the case before the next call to see if the same occurs without the case. If not, get another case. -

Have you looked here:
iPhone and iPod touch: Frozen and unresponsive -
Fixed memory and blue screen and missing config\system error
Very simply, after wasting alot of money swapping ram sticks and hardware, it turns out that one of the bios settings , a very deceptive one, was set wrong. When I setup the system, one of the options was to set the ram at ddr200 or ddr400. Since I had pc3200, I bumped it up to ddr400, which apparently was the wrong setting, and this caused the ram to be overclocked. Once I set it back down to ddr200, it still read as 400mhz frequency, but now the system errors were gone, the system runs faster, and it seems to be a permanent fix.
Does anyone know of a good site or thread that explains the bios setings for athlon 64 boards...I was quite used to athlon xp bios setups, and this is clearly new territory. and the manuals suck.Your in wrong forum chum this is the Nvidia 64 try the forum above this AMD 64 VIA/AMD

Firefox 4 screen and controls frozen during setup screen. can't do anything
I have e-machine netbook with Windows 7 Starter. When I install Firefox 4, a popup screen asks me to set options for social networking (I think). I can check the options but can't close popup screen. Everything freezes and I must shut down computer.
Try a reset by simultaneously pressing the home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears, then release both buttons. It is a good first step in troubleshooting, since it is easy to do, and will not affect any stored data.

i have had my ipod touch 4th gen for 6montha i had to take my first one in becuz of the headphone jack broke off now they handed me a brand new ipod so its still under warrentie but it will shut off on its own with a full charge and home button keeps not responding and got a white screen two days ago i was listeningto aome music earlyer today and the volume rockers would not work im wondering if i should bring it in
Try this to get it working
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If you get it working, then restore to factory settings/new iPod. If you still have the problem then time for the Genius Bar. -
Xorg / catalyst / kernel upgrade - Frozen screen and input [SOLVED]
I knew it, never upgrade xorg/graphic drivers when using ATI cards, just bless your god when it works and never touch it again. But I got tempted and I did a full system upgrade, and now... my xorg is broken.
I'm using ATI proprietary drivers catalyst 8.12-1 with xorg 1.5.3-3. My card is an ATI x1950 pro.
It used to work perfectly, but since the update, when i startx I just get a terminal (because of my .xinitrc) in fullscreen without my window manager getting launched, and my mouse in the middle of the screen; and nothing responds the mouse won't move, even ctrl+alt+backspace won't work. I have to ssh on my machine and 'killall X'.
I tried starting off with a default config (using aticonfig --initial -f), but still the same problem.
I have a dual screen setup.
I disabled AIGLX and Composite, but no success.
If I fail to repair this, since I made a backup of my pacman database, I could revert it right ?
Please help us, us pwned ATI users !

edit: weird thing (or not) but DPMS (or whatever it is, the thing that turns off my monitor after some time) seems to work, altough moving the mouse or pressing the keyboard doesn't wake up the screen. Has this something to do with my mouse and keyboard not being recognized by xorg ?
edit2: omg yes it is ! I added:
urxvtc -e 'screen'
so when I startx an un-window-managered fullscreen terminal launches with a screen session, and if I ssh on it I can type in this terminal from another computer, and the screen actually displays what I'm typing, so that's definitely an input problem !
Final Edit: Well all solved, concerning the "frozen" stuff, it was just that my keyboard and mouse weren't detected because of the new hotpulg thingy (check http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging for more info, or just add 'hal' to your rc.conf), then restored my original xorg.conf, rebooted and it all went back to normal (: ). Hope this helps.

Hmm, I wonder what it would reveal if someone read the news? http://www.archlinux.org/news/424/
Even your Xorg.0.log is telling you the problem.

Flashing question mark on screen. Can I still backup my files and restore my system?
Okay, so yesterday evening, I received a message from my teacher that I had to redo one of my papers because a program she used detected some copy paste information that was about 39% more than what she accepts and asked me to reword some of the information. When I started working on my paper to resubmit it to her, My laptop was freezing a lot in the middle of me working on my school paper. After a while, it completely froze to the point where I could no longer do anything and stayed frozen for hours on end. I couldn't even save my work which was very frustrating considering I wanted to get that done and out of the way. I felt that I had no choice but to force it to turn off and turn it back on. In the process of me doing so, a flashing file with a question mark came on in which I took the time to look up to see what it meant and how can I fix it. However, after many reading, I realized that if I reboot the system I will lose everything I have that's important to me (which technically is my school work, some photos, and licensing application). I never used the Time Machine when my laptop was up and running because I never understood it or knew how to use it. One of the things I read is that I am able to restore my laptop with Time Machine. But I was curious to know if I can still use Time Machine to backup and restore my laptop? I'm hoping I can as I really do not want to lose the information and files I have saved. Below are the basic information of my laptop. Please help!!!!

100 voltsThe fact that you can boot into Recovery Mode, which is a hidden partition on your HD, means your HD is working, at least somewhat. Since your main concern is retaining the files that are important to you, what I'd suggest is creating a clone on a separate, external HD. You can do that by booting into Recovery again, partitioning the external with a GUID partition table and creating at least one partition for a clone (3TB externals are pretty inexpensive these days and you could have plenty of partitions large enough to hold what's on your internal drive) and using "Restore" in DU with the internal as the source and the external partition as the target. With that done, see if you can boot from that external clone. If you can't, go back to Recovery, and, instead of Disk Utility, choose Reinstalling the OS but with the clone you just made as the target. When that's done, see if you can boot from the external, and if you can, you will have a working bootable backup of your internal and all your files. You can then wipe the internal and Restore to the internal by using Restore in Disk Utility in Recovery Mode with the external as the source and the internal as the target. Normally, I'd suggest just reinstalling the OS on the internal, but if there's something wrong with the drive, you may risk making things worse, and first priority is to protect your files.

After upgrading to Mavericks on my MacBook, I'm not able to download third party applications like Dropbox and MyCleanMac 2. After clicking the download button, the screen just turns dark and is frozen. Any idea what is happening?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -

My ipod 4g has a frozen white screen and will not turn off, any advice?
My daughter's ipod 4th gen (only 4 months old, bought direct from Apple) suddenly has a frozen white screen and will not turn off. We cannot reboot it by pushing and holding the two buttons, even when held up to one full minute. When we plug it into the computer, the computer does not recognise it nor does iTunes, so we can't even do a full system restore. Help! Any suggestions of how we can reset to factory settings without using iTunes please?
- Let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try :
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. -
