Strong wifi, poor video streaming???

Hi,
My video streaming on apps like FoxNow and SyFy keeps freezing and often quits to the home section.
The WiFi signal is strong and yet it can only play a few minutes before it freezes again.
Streaming is just fine on my MacBook Air from individual TV sites - Hulu, Fox, etc.
The apps for Fox, The CW and SyFy are the worst while NBC and HBO playback just fine.
Can anyone help?
Cheers.

Hello mikeswitzer. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
As you have already figured out poor signal strength equals poor bandwidth performance. This, of course, will be noticeable for both audio and video streaming.
I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MacBook near the Time Capsule (TC), note the readings, and then, go to the location where you currently have the Mac Mini.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MacBook, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
SNR Guideline
o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at the Mac Mini, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your TC. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the TC or the Mac Mini until they are within a 20dB SNR range.
Another option is to utilize a transceiver on the Mac Mini to try to increase the Mini's built-in AirPort antenna ability to pick up the signal from the TC. One vendor that provides these is QuickerTek.

  • Poor Video Streaming.  Any tips?

    Hello everyone,
My MacBook Pro really dosn't like treaming video.  Regardless if it's live feeds such as ESPN3 or preset videos from Yahoo/CSPAN etc.  Straeming HD content from sites such as HBO doesn't work too well either.  The only one that works well is Netflix but not always.
I think I have a fast WiFi connection.  When I do the speed test it's alwasy in the 6-8 Mbps range and sometimes 10Mbps.  I have an Airport Express and for everything else it works well (downloading music, podcast, surfing, updates, etc).  I have the automatic graphic switiching turned off so it's always using the high preformance graphics and my flash player is up-to-date.
Thank you so much for any help.  I really apprecate it.
    best

  • Does anyone else have pixelating poor video streaming on iPad 2?

Hi I was wondering if anyone else has poor pixelating video streaming on iPad 2? Anytime I try to watch a video with much movement like any type of sports, like baseball and basketball the quality is poor with a lot of pixelating and blurry video. This is on the web browsing or in any of the Internet apps. Does this happen to anyone else? Just got it yesterday and have heard some people say that the quality of the MLB videos is near hd like watching tv. I appreciate anyone's help on this. Please let me know. Thanks.

Yes, I would still say it's a slow down due to either a moderate to high volume of internet traffic on the Time/Warner servers (depending of course on the time of day or day of the week) plus, maybe since this is a sports (baseball) website, it could be a slow down because of amount of internet trafiic to that site and, possibly, more people viewingthe same streaming content as you.
Also, if you have other people sharing the WiFi signal in your house and using the internet (via Wifi) this could, also, be another factor in your data connection speeds and slowdowns.
That's usually the cause for either different levels of streaming pixelization or data buffering issues.
    No doubt about it!
Hopefully your streaming experience will be better in the near future.
If you use other video streaming services, (like Netflix, Hulu/Hulu Plus, Amazon, Crackle, etc.) try viewing streaming content from those sites to see if your video streaming quality improves
Good Luck and Have fun with your iPad!

  • Very poor video streaming from youtube

I cannot watch a single video from youtube or any other site. I have OS v6.0.0.522. Is there anything i can do?? It will play a video for a few seconds then just starts to buffer. I have a BB 3G 9300 with Sprint

  • Video streaming issue with WiFi

Video streaming never works for the second time when WiFi is on & connected. Says "Wireless network has been disconnected. Please try again.", though it is connected well and browser works fine.
I need to do battery pull-out everytime. I'm trying to stream youtube video contents.

Yes, it does play all youtube videos but low bandwidth ones (suitable for mobile devices)

  • Why is local video streaming to Apple TV jerky?

Video streaming to Apple TV (v 3) has always been smooth. No matter what the online source -- from YouTube to Netflix -- the video is consistently good. Video streamed from Macs, though, is jerky to the point of unwatchable. Even when I stream it from a a Mac connected by ethernet with wi-fi off, the result is unwatchable.   I cannot think what the problem could be. My wi-fi signal is strong (from two bridged Apple Extreme units) so when I stream wirelessly network shouldn’t be the problem, and I’m just a few feet from both ATV and AE.

Seems that if it's network related, this is going to be a hard nut to crack.  I assume you can bring your Airport Extreme in to be checked out, but if you are using another brand of wireless router, you won't get much help there.  I know wireless interference can play havoc with signals and one of the things I'd check out with some sniffer software is that possibility.  Just sitting here in my kitchen I can see signals from 15 different wireless routers in my neighborhood.  Using 2.4 GHz channel selection can make all the difference between good and poor performance.  Granted those 15 access points in many cases aren't close enough to interfere, a couple are and I've seen performance on my Macbook Pro suck sometime because a close by wireless router pops onto or close to the same channel I'm on.  That's a lot why I bought an Airport Extreme and use the 5 GHz side as much as possible.  In the case of my Apple TV and all my Apple devices, I run on the 5GHz side.  Signal strength is good and when I get the slow downs when using Airplay, the reboots of the streaming devices usually resolve the issues.

  • TS1398 Very weak WIFI on my new iPad MD511LL. Tried Apple suggestion, but they didn't work. Signal is variable from zero to two - never shows three 'bars' even on stronger wifi system. Could this unit be defective?

Just bought it last week. Have synced it with my main computer. It gets WIFI most of the time, but the signal never goes above two bars (curves) even when I'm in a strong WIFI area. Rest of the time it varies between zero bars (no service) to two bars - slow, slow, slow.
Already did the recommended shutdown and the WIFI on and off suggestions made by Apple. Already compared to other equipment, which receive a solid, strong three bars at all the same locations. Since this is the WIFI only model, quite alarmed at the problem. I need the WIFI to be able to pick up the signals better.
Could this be an antenna problem?? Behaves this way even when not in any case.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Apple TV video streaming issue with EA4500

I am facing issues with my router EA4500 and my apple TV. When I am watching a video from my itunes library at my PC, sometimes stop palying waiting to receive data. Is that a way to conect my apple tv to my router to prioritize this video streaming from my PC to apple TV? Can someone help me? Do you have the port list for Apple TV?

I'm sorry if I confused you! Regarding the firmware version you currently have (2.0.37.131047) it shows that you are using the Classic firmware in which we would suggest that you upgrade it using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Firmware. This Linksys Smart Wifi uses the latest firmware for your router that might help you fixed your problem. Click this link below where you can download the new firmware for yor
router. http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/EA4500----Can you tell me what version of apple tv you have? If your Apple Tv happens to be dual band then I would suggest that you connect to the 5ghz network because it can give you better video streaming capability. Yes you can choose which device you want to connect to the 2.4 or 5 ghz as long that device/s is dual band.

  • Video Streaming is not working!

    Hello,
since a couple of days, it's not possible to stream videos from iCloud.
e.g. when trying to stream a video (an Episode from a TV Series for example) the video is downloaded on the device, and is using memory space.
Then it's not possible to delete that video from the device, and the used memory is not shown in the video app!
It seems the iPad or iPhone doesn't know that the video is there. Only after clicking the download button at the video again and actually downloading the video, it's possible to delet it!
The problem exists in iOS 7 as well as in iOS 8
Streaming is absolutely useless that way!!!!
Is there anyone with a solution to that problem???
    Thanks
    Patrick

No its happen with any link, or video streaming sites

the thing is when Im connecting the macbook to a TV screen with HDMI cable, then the video streaming is working fine and not get stuck after 5 sec

  • All video streaming has continuous pixelation/macroblocking issues

On youtube, dailymotion, vimeo, etc.  (all internet video streaming sites)  the video becomes pixelated and I get macroblocking.  It appears for a few seconds, then it goes away, then a few seconds later it comes back.  It does this continuously off and on.  This happened before and I couldn't find a solution so I re-installed Windows 7 and then the problem went away.  But only 3 weeks into the new re-boot and the problem has resurfaced.  I have no idea what happened or how to fix it.  Please help!!  I can give you the specs for my PC and let you know whatever else is needed to solve this problem.  My PC skills are not that advanced, but I can follow directions very well.  This problem is starting to really piss me off.  When I download a youtube video, the problem is not there when I watch it on VLC media player.  The problem is only present when I am streaming it from the internet.  This problem just "appeared".  It was not there on a clean re-install.  I  don't know how it re-surfaced again.  I've searched through other forums an I cannot find an answer anywhere!  I need to know the source of the problem and I thought it might be Adobe Flash, but I am not sure.  When the videos become pixelated, it looks like this (I took a screen shot):

My browser is Firefox version 18.0 (it is up-to-date) and I have DownloadHelper version 4.9.13 and Adblock Plus version 2.2.1 as add-ons.  My Adobe flash player version is 11.5.502.146.  My operating system is Windows 7 Professional (64-bit).  The HTML5 video worked perfectly fine.  No problems with that one.  The Non-HTML5 video showed the same problems I keep running into.  Here is a cropped screenshot of it:
Thank you.  I really appreciate the help.  So what is the next step???  The HTML5 video had no problems and worked perfectly fine.  I figured it would just be easier to show my entire system information (motherboard, processor, video card etc.), so here is the output from the DirectX Diagnotic Tool regarding my system information:

  • E Mac too old to watch Video streaming from web?

Hi good folks of Apple world. I am having an 'issue' with my eMac 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 with 1 GB DDR SRAM. Mac OS X Version 10.4.11.
Apart from a problem with the logic board (fixed under extended warranty) this has been an amazingly reliable machine. My problem now is video related, I cannot watch video streaming on the web, The feed is jerky and broken. In the UK my family watch the BBC i Player a lot. Something happened a few months ago after a security update, because before that I could watch the i Player, now we cannot. The same thing happens when trying to watch music video etc. I use Safari and Firefox, for a while we could almost watch video using Firefox, but now it's as bad as Safari.
Is it just that my Mac is too old? I heard that the BBC were not 'supporting' Apple product?
When watching video feed from the web at work, on a PC everything works fine?
Love to hear any informed comment?
    Regards, Alister

There's a variety of reasons for this problem...
Flash - Flash is bad. One possible solution is to downgrade to v9 of Flash, as it seems to run better on these machines.
Speed - yeah, the CPU isn't real current, so it's probably a bit of a factor - but in reality - I can watch any AVI/MOV etc, without a problem. Its only when I try to watch HD content that my eMac struggles. So, I really don't think the CPU/computer as such is to blame.
Websites - YouTube for example, is rotten for making their site full of crap that your eMac is having to deal with as well as play the video you are trying to watch. Stuff like telling you how to buy the song that's playing in the video... or other advertising crap etc. That all doesn't help.
BBC - I'm not familiar with the BBC's iView software/website, but for one thing, I'd be writing back and formally lodging a complaint that they don't support Apple Mac. That's poor.
One option, painful though, is to use Safari to load the video page, then look in the Activity Log to find the video file, double click it, and download it direct to your computer. Then watch it that way using something like "VLC".

  • Playing IP Multicast Video Stream

I want to get an app that allows the iphone to receive and display an encoded video stream. The video stream could be coming over 3G or over WiFi. It will be an UDP/IP Multicast stream with an address in the 235.239.0.1 range. The VLC laptop version will receive and play the stream, but so far I cant find an iPhone app that will do it (VLC for iPHone will not receive a multicast stream over WiFi). Please help.

  • Video Streaming Premiere E11 movie

I would like to video stream a 1 Hr. AVCHD movie completed in Premier Elements 11 to a 50" HD TV.  I would appreciate some help as to the procedure:
(I have not streamed video/TV/etc. before)
    1.  The video will be streamed via WiFi to a Blue-Ray player.
    2. Will the quality be as good as a BD disc?
    3.  What settings do I use to save (share) PREL as?
    4.  What software do I need on my laptop to be able to accomplish the streaming.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Miscellaneous something for you to explore...
The use of Apple TV connected to your TV (I used HDMI connection between these two).
The TV has a Wifi connection to my computer's router.
Import your video file into iTunes, then set Apple TV to "Computer" and, with iTunes opened (File Menu/Home Sharing enabled) on the computer, view your video in iTunes on the TV. iTunes typically accepts H.264.mov files. See Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime.
There is probably lots more written about this online. Above is just starter suggestion.
    More later if interested.

Add On...Another application...I can play iPod movies and songs on the Apple TV TV setup, using the iPod Air Play feature. The iPod has a Wifi connection.
