Struggling to understand photo resolution in iCloud

I am finding it difficult to understand how the photos in the cloud works with regard to full- and reduced-resolution photos. Optimise ipad storage is turned on so, in theory, only reduced versions are kept on the iPad. I imported some photos with the camera connection kit, but now, after the iCloud has updated itself, some of the photos are at full resolution and some are reduced. If I edit these reduced resolution photos in an external app (the new Pixelmator or Waterlogue for example) the full resolution photo is not the one that is being edited. I end up with a reduced size image saved from these apps. (You can see the sizes of photos by using a photo info viewer app such as Koredoko or PhotoSync which show these sizes).
Can anyone explain why this is happening, and how to ensure that the full-resolution photo is the one being edited?

I'll close this thread by mentioning the more drastic workaround I'm going with: not using iCloud for sharing when I need a lot of descriptions and other metadata. I'm planning to export from iPhoto, including title and keywords, and then post on Google+, which seems to read the metadata from the JPGs.
If you are going to export from iPhoto anyway, you can send the photos using the  Photo Stream as well.  When you are sharing via PhotoStream, the Photo Stream will transfer the EXIF and IPTC tags embedded in the original file. Only, there are two problems with the embedded EXIF and IPTC tags:
The way you are seeing the photos in the PhotoStream album is misleading.  The Info panel in the Photo Stream view simply is not showing the tags that are embedded in the photo. The only visible metadata are the filename. You will see the embedded metadata however in the Info panel,  when you import the photo from the Photo Stream album to an event.
And the Photo Stream will not add cations and titles to the shared images, that are not yet part of the original image file and only part of the edited version. But any tags embedded in the original file will transfer.
As a simple work-around to share the titles and keywords, export the images and use the titles as filenames. Then reimport and send via Photo Stream.

  • Photo resolution with iCloud photo-library bèta.

You guys probably know about the new iCloud photo-library beta version.
    This is what Apple says:
" iCloud Photo Library helps you make the most of the space available on your iOS device by automatically storing the original high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and leaving behind the lightweight versions that are perfectly sized for each device."
Does this mean that the quality of my photo's is less good then

Yes it will when storage on the phone will become tight.

  • Photo Resolutions and Icloud

Hi folks , writing today to make sure i am not going crazy. When reading the various links and pages everyone states that when a picture i have taken is stored in photostream it is stored in full resolution ..... so when i download that picture with my mac or pc it will be saved in the original resolution it was taken ..... a few months ago i organized my iphoto library and then started sharing various albums to photostream so they would be saved in icloud for free and i could access on any of my devices ( 2 imacs, 2 iphones and one ipad and of course an apple tv ) ....i recently got another mac wanted to have access to all of the cloud photos and redpwnload some again through photostream in iphoto .... to my suprise they would only download in 2048x1536 ..... not the original resolution.
Here is where i am confused i thought when the pics were uploaded they would save in original res .... when downloaded on a pc or mac they would download again in full res .... when on an ios device they would be the optimized res......
The whole reason why i picked icloud for my photo solution was the cloud storage in full res and of course the unlimited size.... what am i doing wrong ?

This is from this Apple document: iCloud: My Photo Stream FAQ
On a Mac or PC, your photos are downloaded and stored in full resolution. On
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV, your Photo Stream photos are delivered in a device-optimized resolution that speeds downloads and saves storage space. Dimensions will vary, but an optimized version of a photo taken by a standard point-and-shoot camera will have a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution when pushed to your devices. Panoramic photos can be up to 5400 pixels wide.
However, photos that are imported into an iPhoto Library from the Photo Stream will be full size.  One should set up the iPhoto Photo Stream preferences as follows:

  • Can not get the high resolution photo from iCloud on the iPhone5s, unless re-share the photo to the iCloud.

after restoring the iPhone, the iPhone can not get the high resolution photo from album of iCloud, unless re-share all the photo to the iCloud.

If you plug up both to computer, open itunes, click "back up to computer" on both (not necessary for the one that's being transferred to) then on the one that's sending data click "back up" in the iTunes menu. It will then back up (if not already done in sync). Now plug up the second one (being transferred to) and on the iTunes menu, click "restore from backup" then choose the device you just backed up, and click "ok" or what it says.
    Hope this helped
P.S. I am referencing to using iTunes <11. Some features I show here might not be available in iTunes 10

  • Is there a difference between photo stream on iCloud and Photos that should be in iCloud drive.

I'm totally trying to wrap my brain around how iCloud drive should function. Perhaps I'm over complicating things. I see photo stream photos on iCloud - at least I think that's what they are. I'm thinking I should also see photos inside of iCloud drive as well as that is paid for and has more storage and photos don't disappear after 30 days.
Problem is I don't see photos in iCloud drive even though I have paid for it. I'm also really lost on how I would upload from iMac to the drive and then see on my device. What am I missing? I have tried to upload from iMac by dragging and dropping into a folder i created on the drive but they don't appear on my other devices.
Also how about other documents such as PDF files. Maybe I'm to used to drop box. I was thinking I could upload pdf files from my iMac and somehow open them on my devices but can't manage that either.
Additionally using Family Plan and have discovered (i think) that family shared photos are low resolution. Are these even printable?
Could someone please explain this to me like I'm a first grader. Not understanding at all.
    Thanks,
    Kristy

Guy would this be of any help:
To start up your computer in Apple Hardware Test:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. If Apple Hardware Test does not start up, see the Additional Information section at the end of this article.
Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.  An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature.
It takes a minute or so for Apple Hardware Test to start up and inspect your hardware configuration. While this is taking place, an icon appears on the screen:
When the process is complete, select your language and click the right arrow. If you aren't using a mouse, you can use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
The Apple Hardware Test console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the "T" key or the Return key.
To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the "Perform extended testing" checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.
To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.

  • How do I remove photos uploaded to iCloud from my iPhone 6 ?

So I'm wondering how I can keep photos I have uploaded to my iCloud account off my iPhone 6 Plus to free up some disk space. After all, one of the benefits of having cloud storage is to store files remotely so you have more space on your hard drive. But, every time I try to delete a photo from my phone it says that "This photo will be deleted from iCloud Photo Library on all your devices."
Which, it seems to me, is kind of beside the point.
    Any ideas, anyone?
I'm running iOS 8.1.2 on an iPhone 6 Plus.

Unfortunately iCloud does not work like  and wasn't meant to. This may change moving forward.
iCloud Photo Library is still in beta and the way it functions may also change.
Currently it does not keep a full resolution version on the device, so your 20GB of photos will not take up 20GB on your device.
How does iCloud Photo Library save space on my device?
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
You can turn on Optimize [device] Storage from Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera > iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.
iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
It defeats your purpose but not everyone's in general. For instance, I too have the 20GB plan and I use mine mostly for my iCloud backups (iPhone & iPad) and the contents of my iCloud Drive.
A service like Dropbox may better suit your needs. It can be configured to automatically upload your photos. Since iCloud storage plans are now based on a monthly commitment, you can just simply cancel before the next auto renew.

  • How do I download photos from my iCloud to my device?

Second time posting this.  I've had multiple calls to Apple and promised call backs and no one has helped.   I'm still not able to access over 2300 photos.
Cloud says I have 2,300 photos but I'm not able to view or download them back to my new device.
    I Received the following email:
There are currently 2364 photos and 15 videos in your iCloud Photo Library
Original format, full resolution versions of your photos and videos are not stored on your devices. You must download your full resolution photos and videos to at least one device before they are deleted from iCloud Photo Library in 30 days.
To download your photos and videos to an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 8:
    1.
Connect to a power source and Wi-Fi.
    2.
Go to Settings and tap iCloud, then select Photos.
    3.
    Tap Download and Keep Originals.
I DO NOT have the option to tap and download originals.
IVe been been on hold with Apple care for 2 hours. Someone help!!!
    iPhone 6, iOS 8

Obviously I do not know as much as they do, especially specifics of your situation but:
Photos with current operating system can be in icloud in two different ways
    1. Photostream - in that case nobody would be able to download videos, only photos and then 30 days period from email would make sense, but you need to get on wifi and turn photos under settings - icloud "ON" ASAP.
    2. Backup - in that case you do not have to wait till Monday, just need to restore from the backup.
Baring some new features that coming on Monday, I would try to get consistent story out of them. If they ask to wait till Monday I would make sure I know why.
Now that all makes sense if you running beta software on your phone.

How do i see what photos are in icloud?
I have duplicate photos appearing in my photo library and in another folder underneath the photo library on my Iphone5.  This is killing my free space and i cant delete them from the phone because I dont have that option within those folders.  How do i delete them?

    Good day AMELIASARAH,
One resolution to your issue would be to update your iPhone using iTunes on your computer rather than over the air. This requires much less space on the iPhone as most of the work is done by the computer. See this article for how to do it -

  • Question about photo resolution?

Hi. I've been trying to put a book together in iPhoto. I understand the 'resolution alert' and what it means. So I try to remedy it with the various methods. Smaller books, more photos per page, uncrop photos. I have even gone so far as to give up on the book and try a card or post card. All to no avail. Some photo's are vintage, so I understand. But others are digital and quite new. I rarely get a photo that doesn't get the resolution alert. They can't all be bad, what am I doing or not doing? Any help?

    LarryHN wrote:
What is the size of a photo that gets an alert, what is the size of the frame it is placed in and have you zoomed the photo within that frame?
All different sizes. 9 out of 10 photos are getting the 'resolution' alert.
the key is the digital photo size (look in the info window at the lower left - sizes might range from 480x640 to 2448x3264 - or larger) and the size of the frame - and if you have zoomed the photo in the frame
the warning comes at anything below 180 DPI so for a 2" x 3" frame your photo needs to be 360x540 or larger - for a 5" x 7" frame your photo need to be 900x1260 or larger - for a full page print your photo needs to be 1530x1980 or larger.
No. I've done no 'zooming':o) I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be dense. Just new at all of this so don't really know where to look for a lot of this stuff. This sounds possibly helpful to me and I'll look into it further.
With our specific information on the photo's digital dimension and the frame size and zooming, I can only give very general answers like I have

  • My iPhone is nearly full with photos, will the photos stay on iCloud if I delete them off the device?

And if iCloud does store them, how would I be able to view them?

I do not understand the point of icloud.
I too am out of internal space on my device.
1.) If I delete the photos from my device, do they also delete from the icloud? Are they even truly stored there?
2.) How can I view the photos that are on the icloud?
3.) When using icloud to sync to another device (my computer), like syncing my photos using Photo Stream, can I save them on my computer that way??
4.) Can you back up an iphone 4 to a pc without using itunes?

I have yet  to update my iPhone 4 to the latest iOS software. How do I save photos to my iCloud photo stream that were taken before I activated my iCloud account and photo stream ?

You have a couple of options:
    Open the photos one at a time and take a screenshot.  This will add a new low resolution copy of the photo to the camera roll, which will then upload to your photo stream;
    Email the photos a few at a time to yourself, then save the attached photos to your camera roll.  This will add a copy of the photo at full resolution to your camera roll and upload to photo stream;
Use an app like PhotoSync, which will allow you to wirelessly transfer copies of all your old photos to your computer all at once.  Then delete these photos from your camera roll and use PhotoSync to transfer them back from your computer to your camera roll.  These will be the original resolution and will upload to your photo stream.  (You need an app like this because iTunes will not transfer photos back to your camera roll, where they must be in order to add to your photo stream.)

  • How to share the Photos library on iCloud Drive with other family members?

I have uploaded our family photo-library to iCloud drive (136GB+). It works great!
But how can my wife (with her own iCloud-account, but within the family) see and use our library?

Tnx for the reply, though I already feared this was the answer.
Family sharing works well for keeping contact lists separated and we do not need to see all the crap the other half shoots with their iPhone.
But as family-members, we DO want to use our communal photo-library.
It would be great if you could share your entire library with family-members or at least select which albums to share with who.
Also it is silly that you can share a photo only to one other iCloud-album. If I shoot a nice pic of the kids I would want to share it with my wife AND with others.
The same would work for contacts. The family-head should be able to assign which contacts are shared and which are separate.
I hope Apple will update the family-possibilities so that this is fixed.
