Struggling with vanishing point

I am playing with different materials in a ren dering and the vanishing point tool seemed appropriate. The trouble though is that no matter how much fiffdling it doesn't "get" the persepctive I'm working in - when I pull off planes in the perpindicular they never correspond with the unde rlying perpedicular planes in the image, even though i know they're orthogonal. SHould i just ignore this and tweak it do that the perspective looks ok with each plane, or is there  a way to get ortho planes to line up with ortho planes in the image underneath...

Never really seen this. The success of this is all about placing the points accurately. Also things such as wide angle lenses (used to shoot the original) can make vanishing point, which only works on a rigid 3D grid structure not work properly. Any geometric distortions caused by lenses can be 'corrected' with the 'Lens Correction' filter.
A tip - using the Z key will allow a temporary zoom and allow you to place the grid points more accurately.

  • Problem with Vanishing Point

    hello!
I've got a problem using Vanishing Point filter in Photoshop CS4. When I load this filter an error message pops saying "The operation could not be completed"
I attach a screen cap of the error. Somebody can help? thanks.

I run into this problem with Vanishing Point on about a quarter of the files I run the filter on. I can initially create a grid and do one transform, but the next time I try to run the filter I get the error, "The operation could not be completed". Then the error seems to stay attached to the file. I can run the filter on another file, but even if I close and reopen the file, I still can't run the filter. Even doing Save As and renaming the file doesn't rid it of the error.
This has been the case since VP was introduced. I'm now on CS4. MacPro Dual-Core, 8GB Ram.
I've tried changing the memory allocation to 55% with no change.
I see that this has been addressed before in the Forum with no solution, Chris Cox care to wade in?
This is a potentially valuable tool if it were implemented better.

  • No way to preserve Alpha channel with vanishing point?????

Such a great tool to use for making "sets" in After Effects, but My alpha channel disappears when I use the vanishing point filter & export to AE.
    Any way to retain it?

    > Or do I just need to keep using the older versions of AFX.
No. Just use the previous version of Adobe Media Encoder to transcode your master file (e.g., QuickTime with PNG codec) to FLV:
removal of FLV and F4V export features from Adobe Media Encoder, After Effects, and Premiere Pro

  • Re: Vanishing points, anyone?

I'm also at my wit's end with vanishing points.  I've gone through 4-5 cycles over the last 4 months where I call, they tell me the back office will audit my account and get back to me, but no one contacts me.  I've even spoken to supervisors who claim they have no authority to help and the audit procedure is the only way to go.  I have no clue how to proceed.
In case this is happening to others:
The basic issue started when I noticed that points were being incorrectly deducted from my account -- this had been going on for over 2 years without me noticing!  I always keep a stock of Best Buy gift cards (you'd think this plus being Elite Plus and Gamer's Club Unlocked would get me some real help just due to my loyalty).  Naturally when you buy something with a gift card, you get no RZ points (because you would have got them when you bought the gift card).  I get that.  However, when I happened to return something that I had bought using a gift card, the points (that I never received in the first place) were deducted.  My guess is that this occurred when purchasing something online for an in store pickup.
The reps I spoke with early on agreed with me on the issue after lots of patient explaining.  At some point I saw that my account was audited and I was due for 850 points back.  However, they just vanished.  Soon after that I would see points pending, but come time for posting, they would vanish.  The only useful information I got was that my account had a negative balance for some reason so the points were being put towards that.  How could that even happen?  The reps mentioned this nonchalantly without even taking the time to think that the system should never allow a negative balance =)
The other hint I got was that my points might be vanishing for opting for 0% financing.  Well that's impossible because I don't even have a Best Buy credit card and only use gift cards.
The sad thing is that I've racked up a lot of points since this issue started: the 850 I was owed, plus over 1500 for video game purchaes and trade ins, and not to mention 250 each time I had to call CS.
Points have been sticking lately, but my balance is nowhere near what it ought to be.

Greetings obot, and welcome to the forum,
I can understand feeling frustrated if you have been experiencing ongoing issues with your My Best Buy™ account where it appears that some points are being removed that shouldn't and some don't look to have posted at all.  To pin point exactly when your account went negative, the best thing to do is audit your account; however, you should not have to wait any additional time or make any additional phone calls into us.  I would say this has gone on long enough.
As you mentioned, points are not awarded when a Best Buy gift card is redeemed.  If points are removed from a member's account following a return/exchange and a Best Buy gift card was the form of payment, then that is an error.  A member should not lose points that they never actually had in the first place.  I looked over your My Best Buy™ account using the email address you registered with the forum, and I do see multiple occasions where points were removed in error because a gift card had been redeemed.
It is possible for a member's points balance to go negative, which may explain why your points balance did not increase as points were posting to your account.  For example, if points were converted into a certificate and the certificate was redeemed, a member's account could go negative if a return/exchange were processed for any of the transactions that the helped earn points that went into generating the certificate.  Also, if a return/exchange were processed before points officially posted, then points might be removed which could result in a negative balance.
I am very sorry for any inconvenience you may have experienced and would like to go over your My Best Buy™ with you to see how I might be able to help.  To do that, I will be sending you a private message.  You can check your private messages by logging into the forum and clicking on the yellow envelope icon located at the top of the page.  I look forward to further speaking with you.
Thank you for reaching out to us.

  • Vanishing point problems?

I am using CS3 on a 8 core Mac Pro with 16gb ram and a 6 drive RAID for scratch. Right now I am running Leopard but I had the same problem with Tiger. I am having issues with vanishing point, 90% of the time after I will get this message "The operation could not be completed". This happens a couple of seconds after I select this plugin. I know that it can be sensitive with large files, but usually my files are only around 500mb. I tried flattening the files and I still got the same message. If I copy this flattened file and paste it into a new document vanishing point will usually work, but if I continue to work on the file I will end up getting that message again. This is with only 5 layers and a file size of roughly 13"x16" @ 240dpi. If I open the same file in CS2 vanishing point works. I also have two other macs, a 2.5 Quad G5 and a dual 2.0 G5. I have this same problem on these computers as well. Of course I tried all of the usual fixes, repair permissions, trash prefs, etc., and still have the same issue.

I had Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 unexpectedly quit on me about an hour ago while working with Vanishing Point on a fairly simple file--2 layers, one layer with the art I was using Vanishing Point on. I had just created one plane and was pulling out a new plane from it and ZAP! This is on a Mac Pro 3 Ghz running Tiger 10.4.11, with 4GBs of RAM. My post from yesterday was from a similar Mac Pro running Leopard 10.5.2, 5 GBs of RAM.

  • Vanishing Point Detection on Images

    Hello
I'm curious if anybody here has done any work with vanishing point detection on images in Labview.  Or i'd like to know of people have recomendations for specific vanishing point detection methods.
I'd like to use this for robot navigation similar to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb0VpSYtJ_Y  It looks like the steps for vanishing point detection would be to detect straight edges in the image, superimpose vectors on top the the edges, then find the intersection of those vectors.

This webpage from Drexel University explains one approach to vanishing point detection that could work with the NI Vision Development Module. The basic approach is to use edge detection to find the lines and then to calculate the intersection of the lines.
I suggest that you start with the Straight Edge Detection example VI that is provided with installation of NI Vision Development Module. In this example, you will see how the software automatically finds the edges of some match sticks. The software could be modified to return the position and angle information about the detected edges. You could use this information to find the projected intersection of the lines in order to estimate the vanishing point.

  • Vanishing Point Orientation

I have spent numerous hours using Adobe resources to help me with 'Vanishing Point.' However, I can't seem to find anything that addresses my issue (probably an oversight on my part). The majority of times that I create an image in VP and import it, it seems to be lost in space (or I am.....). The orientation of the grids doesn't seem to be aligned with the camera, and I can't see the image that I made in PS. Yes, I try moving and rotating the layers, and that works on simpler projects, but not on other ones, I just can't get it to work. Is there an easier, or better way to import my project so that it is orientated correctly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The failure here is, that VP does what in 3D matchmoving is called an uncalibrated track, i.e. it merely calculates some camera that fits the current view and does so by using quite strange values and weird spatial orientation, further complicated by it ignoring lens curvature and thus sometimes realyl producing results, that in the strict sense are completely wrong. The lack of a consistent 3D space is really a fundamental shortcoming in all Adobe apps, including AE and PS. I'm afraid there really is no good solution to your specific problem. As a minor, always make sure the document settings in PS match your later comp settings in AE and try to find the most suitable reference plane in VP. Everything else is indeed a lot of manual fiddling. Of course you can always consider alternatives liek a proper 3D matchmoving tool (SynthEyes, Boujou, PFhoe Pro, PFTrack etc.), but these things then cost extra money...

  • Need help with the Vanishing Point filter in CS4...

While using the vanishing point filter, everytime I paste an image onto the grid and try to move it into place, photoshop blows up and shuts down. I have tried restarting photoshop, restarting my computer, copy/paste layers from file into a new file, deleting old file/starting new, & reset the preferences upon starting Photoshop - none of which solved the issue.  Is anyone familiar with this error? Can you help? Thanks.

  • Vanishing point – Marquee tool – problems with pasting images

For some reason when I paste my selected image into the Vanishing Point tool it comes in with a marquee that is exactly 4 times the size of the image that I originally selected and copied. This completely throws the perspective off as for some reason it thinks my image is 4 times the size it actually is. If anyone could help it would be very appreciated.

You have to be quick...Very quick. Here is a video showing what should happen:

  • How can I find the vanishing point with Labview?

I am using a myRIO for developing a system for helping visually imapaired people in their navigation. I have already done the image processing of what is being aquired by the camera (edge detection and finding of straight lines).
How can I fin the vanishing point from the two edges of a path in an image with LabVIEW? Is there any special function that I can use?

  • Please help me! I am struggling with the mesh tool!

So I want to make this chair look like it does in the picture, but I cant! There is a chapter in my Illustrator CS3 book explaining how to use gradient mesh and mesh tool, but it doesnt help me at all. I am clueless!   The tutorial says that I can create points in the mesh simply by clicking with the mesh tool within an object, but when I try to do that, the pointer is "crossed out". I can only add extra points on lines or edges, but not on empty space within an object. What gives? Why is it that others can do it an I cant? Forgive me if I sound a little too upset, but I've been struggling with this for days and I cannot find an answer.
In this tutorial right here: http://www.layersmagazine.com/illustrator-gradient-mesh-tool.html the guy just clicks in empty spaces creating intersections. In my case it is impossible.
PS: Please look at an attached file and tell me what would be the best way to go about coloring this chair. Maybe I am doing this completely wrong? (I only started learning illustrator about 5 weeks ago)
Sorry for the background template being of poor quality, but this was taken from a book and scanned, so it's the best I could do.

You know something I think there should be a behavioral change in this case. To my way of thinking this option should automatically be disabled if you select the Mesh tool. If for some reason you want the mesh tool not to behave the way there might be a toggle or a double click to get the preferences for the tool 's behavior itself. I can see where this behavior can be useful but there needs to be a toggle.
Selecting the anchors for adding color with out accidentally creating a new mesh division is good thing but you need to be able to work both ways.
What do you think Scott Weichert you use the tool extensively, am i wrong?

  • Hi there. I hoping for help.   I am struggling with both...

hi there. I hoping for help.
I am struggling with both my WRT54G router set-up and i can't seem to use your online chat system. I hope that you can help.
I have just moved from Hong Kong to New Zealand and I'm trying to install my WRT54G, bought in Hong Kong, to connect to a Telstra braodband internet connection, but when I follow the instruction CD-ROM I get to the point (number 6 - although this point is numbered 7 in the instructions?!?) when I have connected the router it then says it is checking my settings and then it asks me to put in a password. It then checks my system again and then asks me for the password again, and this repeatedly. I can't get past this point. Because this was happening I pushed the reset button on the back of the router, but it still asks me for a password (I have tried using admin as the password without success) and then goes through the check and asks me for the password again. Any help would be great.
    Thanks.
    Michael Anthony

What windows OS are you running? It may have not installed correctly.
First go to control panel in start menu, then add/remove programs. it should be in there.
If you do not see it there then go to programs files and see if it is there. if so you can delete the folder it is in, then run disk clean up.
By manually setting up did this work? would like to know the end results.

  • Why is Vanishing Point filter in the latest Photoshop CC creating PNGs that do not match the planes?

    Hi Everyone,
I've scoured the forums, as well as external sites, but not finding a solution.
Tried tech support, their ideas didn't pan out. Would greatly appreciate some guidance.
Every time I try to use VPE, the resulting mesh is fine (the dxf), but the PNGs
do not match the drawn planes at all.
For example, I'll use a file from wikimedia. (all images re-compressed for the forum)
I draw the right wall, make sure it is blue, then pull the floor.
Pull the floor and the left wall.
Pull the back ground (hard to see in the compressed image, but it is there).
    Pull the ceiling.
The completed planes.  Right wall was drawn, remaining were each
pulled out the of the previous plane.  All blue.  Entire image is covered.
Importing the VPE into After Effects CC.  Note the wonky textures.
Here are the actual textures (original PNGs compressed into JPEG for posting).
This is the background piece, note how the section of the image doesn't align at
all with the plane I drew.
Hope this issue is clear to all.  The mesh looks fine to me, just the PNGs are off.
I've successfully used the Vanishing Point filter extensively in previous versions of Photoshop.
I'm currently using Photoshop CC on OSX 10.8.4 running on a 15" PowerBook Retina.
I've tried the following to no avail:
    differing JPEGs
    drawing the floor first
drawing the first surface counter-clockwise and clockwise : )
    ensured all planes are blue
    disabled graphics acceleration under prefererences
completed uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled with clean performance/preference settings (did not import any previous settings).removed the "Adobe Photoshop CC Settings" folder as well.
Tried exporting a DXF, again mesh looks great, textures are wrong.
Ideas are appreciated because right now, I'm stuck : )

    GOT IT!!!!
After we eliminated Adobe settings, and the software, I started wondering what's outside that could be affecting VPE.
It's the resolution of the screen!  I have a MBP Retina.
Using SetResX, I cranked the resolution of my screen from the default retina 1440 x 900 to the hardware's native res of 2880 x 1800.
    THIS FIXED IT.
The resulting PNGs from the export perfectly match the planes (DXF Mesh).
So, I'm asserting that there may be a bug in the current release of PS CC where it is not compatible with the default retina resolution on the MacBook Pro.

  • Can't Move Text Into Vanishing Point Plane

For some reason, when I select text and attempt to paste it into a vanishing point plane, the selection ends up 200% longer than what it should be, and I can't move the text layer into the plane. Screenshot attached.

After you paste the text, (or anything previously copied to the clipboard before entering Vanishing Point) into Vanishing Point, there is no reason why you can't use Free Transform to scale it back to your required size, and aspect ratio.  If the text or object is too big, and the FT handles are outside the VP Plane, just drag it down so you can see the upper handles, scale it down, and drag it back into position.
Note: that when using FT Perspective on any object (I am talking about outside of VP) it tends to exaggerate the 'length' because that's how we would probably see the object in real life.  Perspective I just about the only time I actually right click and chose an option from within FT, because it is so easy and quick to Ctrl (Cmd) drag a corner or center handle.
Unfortunately you only get the basic FT options of size and aspect ratio from within VP, which is a pity because you can't distort your object to apparently wrap onto a curved surface.  I added some FT warp to this text before applying it from within VP.  I suspect I am missing a trick or two with VP as I don't use it very often, so I'd love to hear from someone who really has it under control?
