Struggling with Wireless Modem

I have this modem with this cellphone company and the speed the router on my computers are more than slow, there is any router, modem that I can use to strength the connection.
Thanks for your help/.

I don't even know how to get to the right place to ask a question.  A couple of weeks ago I bought an hp Photosmart Wireless e-ALL-IN-ONE C310 printer.  I also own an hp TouchSmart300 PC.  I thought I could figure it out but evidently my lack of skills in technology once again rears it's ugly head.  Do you mind if I ask really dumb questions?  Exactly what do I need to get my computer to "talk" to my printer??? Oh, yes.  I bought one of those 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Router's.  I thought I would be all set.  I was given excellent instructions but unfortunately wasn't able to get busy with them right away and now I have forgotten everything. I have a contract with VERIZON.  (Since I didn't know what a megabyte was, I got ripped off.  I was set up for such a tiny amount  I used those up almost as soon as I got home so now I get CHARGED for every megabyte I use!!  Every time the internet is active, I get charged.  My last bill (after doing only a few e-mails and reading facebook once a day to check on my daughter and grandkids) was $250!!! Anyway, I digress. I need to get my printer set up.  I put the CD in the computer and nothing happened.  I got the screen on the printer to light up and give me directions as far as "if I want a wireless hookup...." I was to turn on some switch on my router----I couldn't find any kind of switch on it.  Am I missing some kind of a cord?  Do I take that oblong thing which says VERIZON on it out of the computer and put it in the router?  Could someone please give me kindergarten level directions?  I would be so grateful.  My husband is 80 (I'm just a few years younger, hence the memory problems)  and suffers from Dementia.  The only outlet I have is my computer and my printer.Any help would be appreciated forever.

  • Better to create or extend my existing network? (Time Capsule, Express, AppleTV with wireless modem internet)

We have Optus ADSL broadband (Australia) running wireless via a 'Sagemcom F@ST 3864 Optus' modem. We have an Airport Time Capsule (for backup) and an Airport Express (for music connection) and Apple TV.
I currently have the Time Capsule (Express & TV) set up as their own network, sharing the internet from the Optus wireless network. Is creating a new network like this the best scenario? Or is it better to extend the existing Optus wireless network? Besides extension for range/reception, does either option have particular benefits over the other?
Other than internet, we just stream music/movies from laptops & phones to speakers/TV, so the thinking behind creating a new network rather than extending, was based on the assumption that the Time Capsule may be better at data transfer than the modem?
    Any thoughts would be great!

Is creating a new network like this the best scenario? Or is it better to extend the existing Optus wireless network? Besides extension for range/reception, does either option have particular benefits over the other?
I would say it is about 50-50.. 6 of one .. half a dozen of the other.
Any scenario you dream up has a set of good points and bad points.
    So some factors.
    1. I presume you have the TC plugged by ethernet into the Sagem modem.. bridged and creating its own network.. using two different network names keeps the local connection load contained which is good thing.
Wireless is fundamentally poor. It has limits on being only able to handle a single client at a time.. so time slicing between all the clients. plus it is half duplex.. which is simply it can either transmit or receive not both.
In comparison, Ethernet via modern switches.. can have multiple computers talking to each other at once and can both tx and rx, ie full duplex. So using extend wireless is very bad. It means wireless is much slower as each packet is double handled.
Using multiple APs connected back by ethernet to a main router is definitely the right way to go. They can be in roaming or setup with completely different names.. that is almost irrelevant. It is easier though to manage when you do the naming and setup so you specifically allocate load.
For example.. if the TC is doing backups from TM on the computers and you start having streaming issues with the Apple TV, split the load, by naming the 2.4ghz and 5ghz differently in the TC.. and force backups to 5ghz and streaming to 2.4ghz (or visa versa depending on range issues etc.).
    2. Network wise different AP should all live happily together in one happy family. The reality is that more equipment leads to more issues. I have been hitting a few issues lately with wireless routers exactly in your setup being unavailable to the network, if a computer happens to be connected to the wrong router.
For example a computer connected to the Sagem, whether by wireless or ethernet, may have issues backing up to the TC. It shouldn't but it does. I am seeing Mavericks in particular giving strife this way.
Someone recently posted a very helpful article on why this is happening.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5863043?tstart=0
For most people in a home network you do not want the hassle of running a server. But you can see that sometimes things start getting complicated.
Best principle is hope for the best.. set it up as per what you have done.. if it bombs or is unstable.. work back through the issues.. there are some alternative configurations which are more complicated.. eg running the TC with static IP, that seems to alleviate some of the bugs.
    3. What works is best. Whatever the theory.. try a few setups.. what you setup that works well for you is the best even if the theory says no.. that is bad.
eg One post a person used roaming network with all AP's fixed to the same channel, so the idevices would roam properly. This is wrong.. but works.. normal roaming network laptops seem to be able to roam well but idevices do not. Pick what works.

  • How do I set up a Apple TC with a Verizon FIOS wireless modem model  Actiontec 424wi F series.  Does the wifi in the modem have to be shut off and will it effect the FIOS tv?

How do I set up an Apple TC with a Verizon FIOS wireless modem model MI424wr F.  Does the wifi have to be turned off in the modem and then bridge it to the TC?  Will FIOS tv be effected?

Your first call should be to Verizon support to ask them if you turn off the wireless on the Actiontec router....will it affect any of the features/functions of the FIOS system?
If yes, then it would be best to leave the Actiontec router "as is" and connect the Time Capsule using Ethernet in Bridge Mode as a back up device only (wireless is turned off on the Time Capsule).
If you want to use the dual band (and likely much faster) wireless capability of the Time Capsule, then you should turn off the wireless on the Actiontec device to help prevent wireless interference effects that will likely occur when two wireless routers are in close proximity to each other.
Again, the Time Capsule would be connected to the Actiontec router using an Ethernet connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Actiontec router to the WAN port (circle icon) on the Time Capsule. Configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode as well in this type of configuration.
Bottom line....what Verizon says will pretty much dictate how you can set up the TIme Capsule.

  • Do you have to set up AE inBridge mode with existing wireless modem router?

    Hi
I've just bought the AE and Apple TV. My plan was to basically use my existing Netgear wireless modem router for the internet only and set up the AE as the wireless router. I also bought the AE to boost the strength, print wirelessly and I thought it might work better with the Apple TV. The other things I use on my home network are ipad, iphone 4, HP DV6 Notebook, Toshiba Notebook and PS3.
I've plugged the Netgear into the AE with an Ethernet cable. I initially started with the "replace existing access point with AE", as I thought I was replacing the Netgear with the AE. This option left me with internet working and a blinking amber light on the AE.
I then did a hard reset and started again. I diabled the wireless on my old modem/router and chose the "create wireless network" option in airport utility. I think it worked because I have internet and a green light but to be honest I have no idea what I did. I know it's in bridge mode but only because I didn't know how to set up the other options.
Also, I've ended up with three networks out of this process. The default network for the AE (but it has one of those yellow error icons next to it in the available network list), the one I set up and a 5ghz of the one I set up. Neither the default network of the 5ghz network show up in the Internet and Networking control panel, which is where I delete them. I just thought this was odd.
    What I'd like to know:
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
As you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing. I'm basically just clicking stuff and seeing if it works.
    Any help/advice is much appreciated
    Thanks
    Jo

Hello Jo Sugden. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
You don't have to but, most likely, it will be the best configuration choice when you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) connected to your main Internet router by Ethernet. In this configuration, all NAT & DHCP services will continue to be provided by the Netgear router. This will allow all wired or wireless clients connected to the AEBSn to get their IP address (and be on the same subnet) from the Netgear ... and this would allow clients connected to either router to "see" each other.
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If, for some reason, you wanted to create a separate subnet, configuring the AEBSn as a router would allow for this.
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
By default, your AEBSn will create two wireless networks with the same Network Name; one broadcasting in the 5 GHz band, and the other in the 2.4 GHz band. The default name for both of these will be Apple Network NNNNNN. You have the option, within the AirPort Utility, to change the names of each network.
When connected by Ethernet, and in bridge mode, it would be beneficial to name your AEBSn's networks the same as that provided by the Netgear. This would create what is called a "roaming" network ... where you literally can roam with a laptop from one router to the other and still be on the "same" network. This also is a way to extend the wireless range of the Netgear.
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
As a minimum, you will have three wireless networks: one provided by the Netgear and two provided by the AEBSn. By giving them all the same Network Name, they will appear as one to any wireless client. However, they will all show up in a utility like iStumbler or AirRadar.
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
Yes. Operating a wireless network in the 802.11n Radio Mode in the 5 GHz Radio Band offers the best potential bandwidth ... around 300+ Mbps. The only real drawback of the higher frequency band is that the signal strength drops off more rapidly with distance than in the lower frequency band. Also higher frequencies cannot penetrate objects (like walls) as well.
Ideally, you would want to place your Apple TV or other streaming devices in the same room as the 5 GHz network ... or connect them to the router by Ethernet.

  • I have a WRT54G Wireless modem with firmware version 1.02...

I have a WRT54G Wireless modem with firmware version 1.02.1 Mar 4 2003. i down loaded the latest firmware for the modem but i can't install it. I get the erroe message"incorrect image file".
    What is wrong?

Which version of the WRT54G do you have?  If it is not clearly stated on the router, go to Wikipedia.org and search for WRT54G, then you can use your router's serial number to determine which version of the router you own.
The version of the router is important.  Each version has a different set of hardware in it, so each version takes a different firmware.
You can only load the firmware that corresponds to your model and version.

  • Is there a wi-fi analyzer app for ios7 that will display the channels on my wireless modem and the strength of these channels.  I would like to select the channel with the least amount of traffic.

I Would like to use my iPad to view traffic and strength on the channels supported by my wireless modem.  Android has apps of this nature.  I cannot find one on the App Store.  I tried all the free apps and read descriptions for the paid apps.  I don't think it is there.  Is there a wi-fi analyzer that will work on my iPad air?  Ios7.

I'm looking for a channel number indication, too.  I had an app that would do that (WiFiFoFum) but it stopped working a year or two ago and I've been borrowing people with Androids.   It's getting to be annoying now!
I looked at appshopper.com but couldn't find a wi-fi analyser there - is there one?
Otherwise, I suppose it's jailbreak the iphone and have a look elsewhere.

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

All you have to do is go to msconfig and disable all start up apps except the touch pad and hit restart. This is immediately after the second in two days 2 hour recovery which fixes the problem. After watching while all the flab gets reinstalled and upon rebooting, I checked the fn key, its working. I went straight to msconfig and did what I described above checking the fn key while the restart choice is waiting.... it's working. After restart fn key and all the F keys at the top of the keyboard are dead and the wireless modem is also dead. Even tho the modem light is on.  I go back to msconfig and enable all startup apps  to no avail. I type in flash and restart the flash cards and it actually worked ONCE. I disable again as above and restart and every thing is dead again like before only now it's another two hours of reloading crap I don't need to get this other crap I don't need to work again. Surely...... there is a better way to turn the coffee shop modem on and off. What is it please? If this is the best toshi can do with a marketing device they are in trouble.

  • Create a network with a wireless modem?

Hi just got a macbook pro not quite new. Am wondering can I set up a network to share files and stuff from my windows xp sp3 computer? I have a wireless modem with a built in router from the phone company. Do I need to buy anything like airport extreme or something to be able to connect my mbp to share files? Am very new at all this and am not understanding alot of what's being discussed on these forums. The mbp connects fine to the internet via wifi have been able to set up mail which I can receive but not send have had no luck with transferring my stuff in itunes to my mbp. If anyone can direct me would be very much appreciated. I would like to put all my iphone stuff on the mbp.

    It's 10.5.4 2.4 Ghz
Says it has Airport Extreme 802.11 a/b/g/n Don't know what those letters mean. Thought maybe I was supposed to buy that little box from apple to network everything together but see others using just a router. So confusing. Unfortunately I have to keep the dell computer with windows and that's where everything is stored for now. Wanted to get some of my pictures and my itunes stuff into my mac so that could be used strictly for syncing my iphone.

  • How to use time capsule with Verizon wireless modem

What is best setup for TC and Verizon's Ultraline wireless modem.  Thanks!

    Bridge the TC..
I am assuming this is cable internet.. not wireless.
Just leave the Verizon doing what it is doing.. with the TC bridged you just plug it into the modem with ethernet.
To bridge the TC go to dhcp and NAT page for v6 utility.. or Internet tab for v5 utility and pick the connection sharing off bridge mode.

  • Configuring a new Airport Extreme with an existing Wireless Modem Router

I have an existing Wireless Modem Router (brand: Riger) and have an existing wireless network. Recently purchased an AirPort.
What is the best way to install a new AirPort Extreme? I know i have to connect the AirPort Extreme to the modem via ethernet cable.
Do i allow the AirPort to use the existing setting from my old wireless modem router?
Or do i create a new network with different name and password?
Anybody can help or show me where i can look up on this?
    Thanks

Hello akramaziz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will be connected to the existing Wireless Modem Router by Ethernet, it should be reconfigured as a bridge.
(ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
As a bridge, the AEBSn will allow the existing router to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients.
